Needs... a) easy way to add one more server to array b) we don't have single backup server c) we need to have one backup for each "web" part of each server Group #1 : is cross-server-backuping scheme; the main disadvantage that we can't add one more server, we should add 2 servers in one time.   Quick background: We have 40 workstations running Linux. NFS is used extensively for bulk data storage and home directories. This allows users to roam freely will relatively transparent file systems. This is an educational environment where postdocs and students have successfully pulled off a coup of sorts. All have gained root on their individual workstations by grooming a technophobic PI who thinks IT people are evil. If I so much as suggest chroot or sudo restrictions, I'll find myself working out of a broom closet.   I am making an educational social software silverlight application. I would like users to be able to point the application to a URL with text, images, and audio files which they have created. Many users will not have their own website to do this, so we are looking for a free service they can use to upload, and manage their own text/image/audio content. What is the best free service for non-technical users to upload and make available text, images and audio? For instance, sites.google.com allows you to upload pictures and access them via http so that would work, but that is more about making a website. I want to tell the exact differences (in terms of file sizes and last-changed dates) between the source and the backup.   I have an external HDD (1TB) and I'd like to use it on OSX and Windows. I had another external HDD using NTFS and I used NTFS-3G on osx to write files, but I found the reading/writing very slow. Googling a bit I see many people recommend HFS+ in conjuction with HFS Explorer for Windows. Is this the best way ? Is it possible to have two partitions, one HFS+ and one NTFS ? Is it a good option or is it better to use one partition ? I've seen this thread on using UDF for USB flash drive. Would that be suited for an USB external HDD ?

  I'm going to purchase Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E7500 (3M Cache, 2.93 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) and for motherboard my local vendor suggesting me to purchase Intel DG41RQ MB motherboard and he is also saying if i'm purchasing Intel CPU then purchasing Intel's Own motherboard with intel chipset will give best performance. Is it true? To get good inbuilt graphic I'm thinking to purchase nvidia chipset based motherboard of any other company like Asus, Gigabyte, MSi etc. is it ok?   I am running a couple of Debian 6 (2.6.32) and 7 (3.2) Linux servers and all of them have energy saving settings enabled in their BIOS. Furthermore Linux shows that the CPUs are throttled if the servers are idling. I wonder if this could cause any harm - could there be e.g. performance impacts because Linux would not be able to handle throttling correctly? Is there a best practice for Linux servers and power/CPU throttling? Do you guys switch your energy profiles to "performance" or do you leave both the BIOS and the OS with their default settings? The reason I am asking is that I encountered several performance issues on physical Dell servers although all values (CPU/load, memory, I/O, network etc.) seemed to be normal. After changing the BIOS power settings to "performance" in those specific cases, I was able to get rid of the performance issues.

  I have been using IIS7.5 Since its release. I am also using commerce server 2007sp2. Due to Commerce Servers Need for memory and processor I have the app pool the website is assigned to recycling at midnight every night. My Question is what is the best time table to recycle heavy web app pools? I am looking to keep speed and not bump potential customers while recycling multiple times a day if possible. Another issue is that every few days the same app pool will hang and I have to force a reset of IIS to get it working again.

  So I have a LAN connected via a ADSL/PPPoA, this is using a bog-standard DLink router supplied by my ISP (talktalk UK). I have a NAS within the LAN that is running FreeNAS and I want to be able to connect to it when I'm out and about. It's running an atom so it's quite low on juice consumption but I don't want to have it on all day and night so I've been waking it via a magic packet and booting it down from the web admin when I need it. So I want to connect to the LAN, I presume via a VPN, to be able to send a magic packet. But what is the best method to accomplish this, or is there an easier way? I've been looking at the cisco 857 integrated router and the Netgear prosafe 318(behind modem) but not sure If I'm on the right track with what I want to achieve as I've not much experience or knowledge with VPN's or networking (software engineering student). I have tried port forwarding but to no avail, either with magic packets or even connecting outside the LAN via DYNDNS. Thanks,

  What filesystem best suits my needs? Thousands or even millions of files in one directory. Good (ext4 & ntfs level or close) reliability (incl. fault tolerance) and access speed. No directories actually needed, as well as descriptive names, just a dictionary-like structure of id-blob pairs is all I need. No links, attributes, and access control features needed. The purpose is a file storage where all the metadata (data describing all the facts about what the file actually contains and who can access it) is stored in a MySQL database. As far as I know common filesystems like NTFS and ext3/4 can go dead-slow if there are too many files placed in one directory - that's why I ask.

  I have a copy of Windows 7 Professional that I have downloaded from the MSDN e-academy (thanks to my school). Now, the problem is that these license keys are one-use only. If I need to reformat or do a factory reset, what is the best way for me to do so, without invalidating my license and screwing me out of an operating system? Edit: I would also like to know some information on the "restore to factory settings" option in Windows 7 recovery center. Does it do exactly as the name implies and starts you off as if you had just done a fresh install? If I had some kind of nasty trojan or virus, would it be able to survive through the factory reset? The recovery center also has an option for reformatting, though I don't think that it's an actual format - it just backs up your stuff into a Windows.old folder or something like that. Does that require a valid license key?

I am dual booting for legacy reasons, and I have a 2nd internal drive that I would like to use from both XP and 7. Should I go with the standard NTFS? (will the secuirty features be an issue, with different SIDs from the different users) Should I go with FAT32? Should I try out the new exFAT? Also, I curently have two of my 3 drives as "dynamic disks" and 1 spaned volume created on them. (i did this from XP) Win7 can see them/it fine. Is this an ok thing to do?

Then I run cron scripts on the same server to do importing of data for my app. When these cron errors out, the default is it sends emails to the user that runs the cron job. There are just too many places that I need to check the logs and mails for stuff that might have potentially went wrong.   I have a VPS running Ubuntu 10.04, and I'd like to give someone SFTP access to a single directory, but prevent them from seeing anything else on the system. What's the best way to pull this off? I considered removing "everyone" permissions from everything on the system, but that seems like a really blunt tool for this problem (and one that'll cause other issues) - I'm hoping there's a better option here.   I have a series of virtual servers. I'm running a command to login to each one and take a look at the load averages using uptime. What's the best way to work out if load values represent overloading? I'm running on rackspace cloud, so the servers have burst capability and can be all different sizes. I'm a little stumped on how to come up with a consistent way of figuring out when I need to spin up new servers. I can do things like estimate the jobs running on each one, but I'd like a system that runs a little closer to the real resource use available on each instance, as it obviously varies quite a bit!   Right Now I'm using hdparm command in unix to shut down the hard disk but there are few issues with it. when it wakes back up it consumes lots power. Is there any other way to do it? Many times when I put my hard disk to sleep, I can see few bursts at the beginning and then after a while it goes to sleep. I think its because of the journaling system in ubuntu (which I use) Have anybody encountered that?   The setup I have is this: [client01] <-A-> [server01] <-B-> [server02] client01 can access port 9300 on server01 (connection A). server01 can access port 9300 on server02 (connection B). What's the best way to make all traffic on port 9300 to server01 go to port 9300 on server02? I can successfully do this with an ssh tunnel from client01 to server01 to server02, but I don't want to have to run ssh on client01. When I ssh from server01 to server02 forwarding port 9300 (ssh -g -L9300:localhost:9300 server02 on server01), it doesn't work -- am I using the wrong command?
