• Offline productivity

  On some days I'm commuting 2hs (oneway) in the train. I don't have any mobile internet nor is there always WiFi service in the train. Because of security reasons I can't do any work in the train so I'm trying to work on my geek time. I'm looking for general solutions on how to do this (I'm on FireFox/Windows but I don't think it matters) Email works perfectly with gmail offline. It syncs directly when online and remembers complicated stuff. So far I used the ScrapBook plugin to store an website. It works good, but I have to download my favorite news page every day again - I want it to sync as soon as possible. It would even be more awesome if I could click a page on my desktop and my laptop would sync as soon as it has the chance. (edit: maybe the autosave plugin for scrapbook can do this) Similarily, I use the Downloadhelper plugin to download youtube vids, but I'd like something that automatically downloads videos from a given channel. Any tips are welcome. So far my early morning schedule is: wake up, power on laptop, make coffee, power off laptop and leave within 10 minutes (enough time for GMail to sync) but I can imagine a system where my laptop stays on during the night (or boots before I wake (and makes me coffee :])).

  For some legal reasons I haven't worked for anybody for the last 12 years. I am a java web developer or at least I am thinking so. For this period I have been working on my project- some sort of business network - and I did few small jobs, so right now I feel I am far behind in terms of my skills and the skills needed today. I lingered too long on Struts and Hibernate and thought that could the job for my project. I need to get a job, right now, so I am spending most of my time brushing my skills. • Yet another GlassFish 3.1.1 promoted build

  Promoted build #9 for GlassFish 3.1.1 is available from the usual location. This is the "soft code freeze" build with only the "hard code freeze" build left before the release candidate. So if you have bugs you'd like to see fixed, voice your opinion *now*. As a quick reminder, GlassFish offers Web Profile or Full Platform distributions in ZIP or installer flavors (some more details in this blog post from last year but still relevant). If you've installed previous promoted builds or simply have the "dev" repository defined, then the Update Center will simply update the existing installed bits. In addition to the earlier update on 3.1.1 it's probably safe to say that this version was carefully designed to be highly compatible with the previous 3.x versions, thus leaving you with little reasons not to upgrade as soon as it comes out this summer.

• Ubuntu can't identify correct resolution

  I had a Dell monitor and now I have an AOC monitor. The last time these worked without any Xrandr tweaking were with Ubuntu 10.10. Since 11.04, the max resolution that I can use on these is 1024x768. I know for a fact that the correct resolution on this monitor should be 1360x768. Even with Precise beta 2, this problem persists. I know I can fix it using Xrandr, but I want to understand how to get Ubuntu to identify the correct possible resolutions the way it did two years ago. Can someone help me? What I have to check for last time until I went online? (Yeah, Facebook Facebook. Facebook don't have that community sense. You cannot find all your department mates on Facebook. You cannot see all foreign students on Facebook. • Possible disk IO issue

  I've been trying to really figure out what my IOPS are on my DB server array and see if it's just too much. The array is four 72.6gb 15k rpm drives in RAID 5. To calculate IOPS for RAID 5 the following formula is used: (reads + (4 * Writes)) / Number of disks = total IOPS. The formula is from MSDN. I also want to calculate the Avg Queue Length but I'm not sure where they are getting the formula from, but i think it reads on that page as avg que length/number of disks = actual queue. To populate that formula I used the perfmon to gather the needed information. I came up with this, under normal production load: (873.982 + (4 * 28.999)) / 4 = 247.495. Also the disk queue lengh of 14.454/4 = 3.614. So to the question, am I wrong in thinking this array has a very high disk IO? Edit I got the chance to review it again this morning under normal/high load. This time with even bigger numbers and IOPS in excess of 600 for about 5 minutes then it died down again. But I also took a look at the Avg sec/Transfer, %Disk Time, and %Idle Time. These number were taken when the reads/writes per sec were only 332.997/17.999 respectively. %Disk Time: 219.436 %Idle Time: 0.300 Avg Disk Queue Length: 2.194 Avg Disk sec/Transfer: 0.006 Pages/sec: 2927.802 % Processor Time: 21.877 Edit (again) Looks like I have that issue solved. • 12.04 server on home network

  I need advice to help me with a server install, I'm new to ubuntu and linux in general. I have 6 systems in my house, 5 being windows 7 and this laptop that I am typing on is Linux mint 13 Maya. Question is, my wife will not transition to anything. She is stuck in Gates-land. so, can I make a server with ubuntu 12.04 (burnt disc image last night) so that all systems in my home can access and my mother-in-law in another state can also access with a username? That would be awesome and it may convince the war dept (my wife) to change all the systems in my house to ubuntu/linux. Sorry this is so long winded, but all the questions I have seen on this forum don't answer it completely.

• Can not Load Type - Starting the ASP.NET Web Site Admin Tool

• How should I handle search engines auto-correcting the spelling of a site's name?

  A client's site and company is called 'Tranin Communications' (Tranin is her last name). It ranks well in searches for her name but rather poorly in searches for the name of her site/company. I realized that this is largely due to* search engines (Google especially) assuming that the query was misspelled and automatically including results for both 'train communications' and 'communications training'. Both of those queries yield many high-ranking sites that completely drown out hers. Sometimes Google even shows results for 'communications training' instead of 'tranin communications', hiding her site altogether. Is there a way to report an incorrect auto-correction to Google or something I can do to discourage this behavior (e.g. a meta tag)? My searches have come up cold, any suggestions would be appreciated. *I've come to this conclusion because her site ranks very highly when the same queries are put in quotes.

• How can I know if programming is right for me?

  I have an IT background and was pretty confident until an opportunity came up at work to go into programming(C#). I have never programmed before this, and the software I am programming for is a program I have never used before (a 3D modeling software). It has been 6 months since then and I feel like giving up. I didn't get much training... about 3 weeks of training spread out over the last 6 months. I think I would be good at programming but this experience is kinda making me rethink my decision. I'm not sure if it's just me, or if this frustration is normal. How can I tell if programming is right for me?

• Shutdown, Restart, Halt issues, not powering off system

  Before any one says search around, I have, to no avail. I can't seem to get it working after trying every fix out there. So basically, when I turn off my laptop it shuts down fine but the last line is "System will now halt" but power never gets cut, I've tried shutdown -P and shutdown -h same result. Then when I try restart it goes through the same process but hangs on "System will now restart" But I can't figure it out, I am running full Ubuntu with no other Operating Systems. Any tips?

• What are some good, simple examples for queues?

  I'm teaching CS2 (Java and data structures), and am having some difficulty coming up with good examples to use when teaching queues. The two major applications I use them for are multithreaded message passing (but MT programming is out of scope for the course), and BFS-style algorithms (and I won't be covering graphs until later in the term). I also want to avoid contrived examples. Most things that I think of, if I were actually going to solve them in a single-threaded fashion I would just use a list rather than a queue. I tend to only use queues when processing and discovery are interleaved (e.g. search), or in other special cases like length-limited buffers (e.g. maintaining last N items). To the extent practical, I am trying to teach my students good ways to actually do things in real programs, not just toys to show off a feature. Any suggestions of good, simple algorithms or applications of queues that I can use as examples but that require a minimum of other prior knowledge?

• How to remove Recent Item boorkmark from Gnome shell standard "save windows"

  I search all around the internet till the 6th page of result on google with very precise search, but I can't figure how I can do that. I'm working with last updated ubuntu 12.04 and gnome shell, and I wonder how I can REMOVE and I say remove not clear or avoid feeding but remove completly the "recent item" bookmark you can see in the standard save windows of gnome shell here's a picture (in french it's "Récemment utilisés"): Sorry not enought point to post image to see what I talk about, just do that: -open gedit -type anything -save your file -Now that windows got a "recent item" and I want it DOWN I cannot reward point, but I would if I could for the guy finding a solution, and a bonus point if you find a way to remove it every where it appears in gnome shell. • My first Windows Phone 7 application is live &ndash; from zero to submitted in 5 hours

  Tuesday evening I found myself minus family. I decided to use the time to “have a crack at this Silverlight Phone 7 stuff”. From zero (no experience, no tools installed, no membership on the AppHub) to submitted for approval took me from 8pm to 1am – with the last hour messing around with png files in Paint to complete the submission process! Two days later on Thursday it was approved and is now in the marketplace for you to install - or not :-) The application is very simple but it works and looks “finished” – and importantly I learnt a lot about what is involved and the power of our tooling to make this pretty easy to get going. Go on, give it a go by popping over to the App Hub. You do need to pay $99 to join the App Hub to publish but you can start by downloading the free tools and just work with the included emulator. • What are the pros and cons of a non-fixed-interval update loop?

  I am studying various approaches to implementing a game loop and I have found this article. In the article the author implements a loop which, if the processing falls behind in time, skips frame renderings and just updates the game in a loop (the last variant called "Constant Game Speed independent of Variable FPS"). I do not understand why it is acceptable to call update_game() in a loop without making sure the update function is called at a particular interval. I do not see any value in doing this. I would think that in my game I want to be sure the game is updated periodically with a known period. So maybe it is worthwhile to have two threads, one would call update periodically, and the other one would redraw the game, also periodically? Would this be a good and practical approach? Of course I would need to synchronise the threads.

• Looking for a non-cryptographic hash function that returns a single character

  Suppose I have a dictionary of ASCII words stored in uppercase. I also want to save those words into separate files so that the total word count of each file is approximately the same. By simply looking at the word I need to know which file it should be in (if it's there at all). Duplicate words should go into the same file and overwrite the last one. My first attempt at solving this problem is to use .NET's object.GetHashCode() function and .Trim() to get one of the "random" characters that pop up. I asked a similar question here If I only use one character of object.GetHashCode() I would get a hash code character of A..Z or 0..9. However saving the result of GetHashCode to disk is a no-no so I need a substitute. Question: What algorithm (or subset of an algorithm) is appropriate for pigeonholing strings into a single character or range of characters (Like hex 0..F offers 16 chars)? Real world usage: I'll use this answer to modify the Partition key used in Azure Table storage as described here
