• How can I enable readline for PHP 5.4 on Ubuntu 11.10?

  I installed PHP 5.4 on my Ubuntu 11.10 PC like this: $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ondrej/php5 $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install php5 It's working fine but I don't have the readline function anymore that I need for my PHP CLI scripts. libreadline-dev is installed and readline was working perfectly in 5.3. I also tried to compile 5.4 with readline: $ wget http://de2.php.net/get/php-5.4.0.tar.gz/from/de.php.net/mirror $ tar xzvf mirror $ cd php-5.4.0/ $ ./configure --with-readline $ make test But the last command echoed this error after compiling for some minutes: FAILED TEST SUMMARY Test 7: DTD tests [ext/dom/tests/dom007.phpt] You may have found a problem in PHP. I appreciate any help on how to get readline working!

• Cloud based backup solutions based on open standards?

  I am looking for a solution to backup and consolidate important media from a couple Windows laptops and Mac laptop. I would like a solutions that based on open standards, so my data isn't trapped by proprietary formats and proprietary protocols. I would like the ability to switch clients or change providers in the future. For example, something like Jungle Disk plus S3 sounds like a great option. However, I am having trouble confirming how or if this can be setup meeting this criteria. Are there any real or de-facto standards for treating S3 as a filesystem? If so, what Windows and Mac clients support these standards?

• Feedback on available mid-to-enterprise level desktop backup solutions [closed]

  I am involved in the creation of a new backup solution to replace our current Retrospect setup, which has become a significant time sink to administer. We have almost 200 desktop and some laptop clients, both Windows and OS X. We're only interested in products oriented around disk-to-disk, and would be integrate well with our current set of nine NAS devices as target storage. I'd just like some feedback from anyone out there, as it's sometimes difficult otherwise to find objective reviews of software at this level. Both data and time are important enough that we need a reliable solution which won't be prone to self-destruction as often as Retrospect. Bonus points for de-duplication, which might help squeeze more service time out of our NAS setup in terms of capacity. Currently considering Commvault and Netbackup. Many other products I've seen don't have an OSX client. Any thoughts?

  Captured on the nameserver: 21:54:35.391126 IP resolver.7538 > server.domain: 57385% [1au] A? www.domain.de. (42) What das the percent sign in 57385% mean? As far as I can see 57385 is the clients sequence number, a plus would mean RD bit set. Second question: what does the ARCOUNT do in the query? As I understand the tcpdump man page the [1au] means tcpdump treats this as a protocol anomalie - as would I. I see this in a lot of queries.

• Lightweight tool for viewing raw HTTP messages?

  Hi, I'm investigating differences in behaviour between a couple of Web servers. I need to see raw response data from the servers (i.e. before the response is de-chunked if it has "Transfer-Encoding:chunked" and before it is decompressed if it has "Content-Encoding:gzip"). I can find plenty of simple HTTP client that nearly do what I need (e.g. Poster, RESTClient), but they tend to decode the response one step too far. Network analysers like Wireshark give me what I need but are a bit heavyweight. Telnet is my best bet so far, but is a bit too simplistic (actions like capturing data or entering requests are a bit laborious). Can anyone recommend a good, lightweight tool for sending / viewing the raw data that constitute HTTP messages? Edit: I should add that I'm on Windows. Also, the tool would need to work both with remote and local servers.

• FTP Error 550 when trying to access a folder via symbolic link

  I'm configuring svftp on a linux machine. At the moment local users can login via ftp and they will see listened their home dir. They have write acces to it. No I want the users to write in de /var/www/ dir. Therefore I created an new group apache. Added users to the group and gave the group write access to /var/www. Via the terminal all users can write .var/www/. I created a link in the home directory to /var/www via ln -s /var/www/ /home/user/www ls gives: drwxr-xr-x 2 orangetux orangetux 4096 Jun 23 15:06 ftp lrwxrwxrwx 1 orangetux orangetux 21 Jun 23 15:00 www -> /var/www/ But when I use FTP I see the link but I cannot follow it. Error 550 which means file not found or bad access. How can I solve this, so that the users have access to /var/www via their home dir?

• Ubuntu 12.04 3.2 Kernel showing incorrect "cache size" in cpuinfo?

  2x Xeon E5620 . 16 Cores altogether. /proc/cpuinfo shows cache is only @ 4096kb According to intel this should have 12MB of "smart cache". Doing searched for E5620 and CPUinfo shows the correct number: cache size : 12288 KB However mine shows this: processor : 15 v endor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 44 model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz stepping : 2 microcode : 0x1 cpu MHz : 2400.104 cache size : 4096 KB fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 11 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx bogomips : 4800.20 clflush size : 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 40 bits physical, 48 bits virtual Any idea on why it shows like it's missing 8MB in CPU cache? .

• How can I search for Gmail conversations that have more than one e-mail? [closed]

  I previously used a service that sent me Slashdot articles as individual e-mails. All I had to do was give them the RSS url, and they handled the rest. On the Gmail side, I simply made a filter, labeling these e-mails as "News". Once I stopped using the service, I realized that I had more than 20,000 such e-mails stockpiled. While I could delete all "News" e-mails, there are some that I've forwarded to friends, sometimes receiving multiple replies. These conversations are valuable - I would like to keep them. As far as I can tell, there's no way to search for conversations that have more than one e-mail in the thread. Up until now, I've been deleting them page by page, carefully de-selecting the conversations that have more than one e-mail; however, it will take far too much time to complete. Is there an easier way that I'm missing? Thanks.

Comment ça fonctionne sachant que ma nouvelle ip (200.0.0.10) ne se trouve pas sur le meme réseau que mon interface de destination (10.0.0.2)? English: I have 2 routers A and B, interconnected with a serial connection, with the ip's 10.0.0.1/30 for A and 10.0.0.2/30 for B. On router A NAT was activated with the pool 200.0.0.1 - 200.0.0.15/28. When connection to this router, I get an ip from the pool, for example 200.0.0.10. Knowing my new ip is 200.0.0.10, which is not on the same network as my destination interface (10.0.0.2), how can this work?

  I've recently found a referrer in the apache log on my site. Now, I opened it out of curiosity, since my site is live, but I just started development so I didn't expect it. Anyway, the site was a pure copy of mine, and after investigation I saw that it resolves to my IP. I'm on Ubuntu 12.04, Apache 2, drupal 7, don't know what other info can I provide. My question is: how can I tell apache that it should not serve this site? Thanks Edit: forgot to say that I had some bots register to my fresh drupal installation. Also, my domain is a tld, this fake domain is a third level (ie. sub.domain.de)

  Are there some ways field-tested ways to keep a kind of logbook for a server? Including: software installations (and de-installations) custom configurations (e.g. of a webserver, ssh daemon, etc.) personal notes The big picture. I am preparing a server and would like to extensively document the state and how it was established over time, so that a new person can easily see, what's going on and why. The setup is not too complicated, but I would like to do it anyway. I once used something like Maintain /etc with mercurial on Debian and it was nice, but I am looking for a little more flexible solution. Addendum: So I am interested in logging and documentation first. In an ideal world however, I would like to have a command, which in a few steps would take me from a bare newly installed unix system to a functional environment with all the components setup and in place by the means of, say an 'executable' log. But that would be very ideal, I imagine.

• Wyse Simple Imager. Unable to Create Product Directory

  I am trying to submit a post on www.technicalhelp.de, but I receive an error: Invalid Session. Please resubmit the form. This happens if I delete temporary internet files and log out and back in, and if I use a different browser, and if I use a proxy browser. Perhaps someone on this forum can help I am trying to push a Wyse device image to a USB thumb drive. The image is on a remote server, and the thumb drive is connected to my desktop PC. I am using Wyse Simple Imager to do this. When I select the following: Product: V90 Image Version: 5.010627.512 Image File: \servername\folder\OLD_Rapport\V90-withusb\9V90.i2d Almost instantly, without attempting any action, I receive the message: WyseImager Unable to Create Product Directory. Add Image Failed I have completely formatted the USB drive with FAT32. It is new out of the fox, and I can create folders in it. How do I fix this?

• How does Windows 7 determine that a system was not shut doen correctly (Kernel-Pwer Event ID 41)

  I have a strange situation that Windows 7 thinks it was not shut down correctly, and gives me a warning in the system event log like this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504/de What the KB-article does not tell is how Windows actually determines that situation. Does it parse its own system event log after reboot? Or where does it get that information from? I am currently investigating an issue where I believe the system fails to write the system event log correctly (it stops having entries, although other logs like the application event log still have entries), and after a reboot, Windows thinks it has not been shut doen correctly. Does anybody have any experience with this? ANd can you confrim that Windows determines the previous correct system shutdown by parsing its own system event log on startup?

• Cannot delete folder - Content seems to be nested recursively

  I cannot delete a folder located on my hard disk by any means. I don't quite know how it was created, all I know is, that it is a pretty deep structure of folders (too deep to delete it at once, since Windows restriction path name too long), but the problem in the end is, that I can't "pull out" the inner folders, because they don't seem to be folders anymore (Context menu lacks things like "Properties", "Cut", "Copy", "Delete" etc.) Here a picture of how a right click looks like on one of these "folders": As you can see, the current folder is in very deep, but that is not the problem, rather the one I left-clicked on. Has anyone any advice on how to get rid of these? I tried a chkdsk, said no errors. I also tried deleting those folder via a VMWare Ubuntu, to no success. I also tried a batch file from a volunteer at MS boards, that should automatically de-nest such folders, but I guess mine is a special case, since the tool only created more such folders.

• UFW blocking webrick on port 3000

  On a ubuntu 10.0.4 server runs redmine. starting webrick with: ./server webrick -e production -b lvps46-173-79-113.dedicated.hosteurope.de -d makes redmine available in browser. as soon as we enable ufw, webrick can´t be accessed anymore. of course we allowed Port 3000 from anywhere ufw allow 3000/tcp ufw allow 3000/udp also a grep for iptables doesn´t show a deny rule iptables -nL | grep 3000 find the whole iptables output here http://pastebin.com/k6WNqdPU checking lsof -ni tcp:2222 tells me ruby is listening on port 3000 ruby 3457 root 5u IPv4 864846667 0t0 TCP 46.173.79.113:3000 (LISTEN) What else can we check? what´s wrong with the ufw rules for port 3000?

  Hi, I'm looking for a way to make Google Chrome always open PDFs with its internal viewer when I click a link, as opposed to downloading it to the default location. It works with most URLs, but some servers set a special header to force the file to be downloaded ("Content-Disposition: attachment;", e.g. http://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/46260.html). What I want is the opposite of this question: Stop PDFs from displaying inside Google Chrome, or what is asked for here, but applied to Chrome: How to ignore “Content-Disposition: attachment” in Firefox Btw., I'm running Chrome 8.0.552.0 dev on Ubuntu 10.4.

• Find visually similar images automatically?

  I have a collection of images which is updated regularly that I'd like to group. Rather than reviewing every single image in the collection, I'd like to run an automated tool that pre-groups the images. Adobe PhotoShop Elements has a "Find Visually Similar photos" feature which works well, but it requires manually importing the images first, then I have to select an image each time I need Photoshop to search for images that are visually similar. I do not need a de-duping program since the images are never identical. Is there anything out there that can provide what I'm looking for?

I want Webserver & Sql server on one box. I'm trying to choose between two machines (on hetzner.de): A) intel i7-2600 3.4 GHz 16 GB DDR3 RAM B) intel i7-920 2.6 GHz 24 GB DDR3 RAM B has 50% more RAM but 30% slower clock speed. Q is: is it obvious where the bottleneck will be? Would I ever need 24GB of RAM, even with lots of concurrent users?

During the interview Jon and Herbert made the following remarks: Jon: [some people] really had this vision of a web of servers, the notion that every node on the internet, every connected entity, is potentially a server and a client…we can see where we’re getting to a point where these endpoint devices we have in our pockets are going to be massively capable and it may be in the not too distant future that significant chunks of the web archive will be cached all over the place including on your own machine… Herbert: wasn’t it Opera who at one point turned your browser into a server? That really got my brain ticking. We all carry a mobile phone with us and therefore we all potentially carry a mobile web server with us as well and to my mind the only thing really stopping that from happening is the capabilities of the phone hardware, the capabilities of the network infrastructure and the will to just bloody do it. Certainly all the standards required for addressing a web server on a phone already exist (to this uninitiated observer DNS and IPv6 seem to solve that problem) so why not? I tweeted about the idea and Rory Street answered back with “why would you want a phone to be a web server?”: Its a fair question and one that I would like to try and answer. Mobile phones are increasingly becoming our window onto the world as we use them to upload messages to Twitter, record our location on FourSquare or interact with our friends on Facebook but in each of these cases some other service is acting as our intermediary; to see what I’m thinking you have to go via Twitter, to see where I am you have to go to FourSquare (I’m using ‘I’ liberally, I don’t actually use FourSquare before you ask). Why should this have to be the case? Why can’t that data be decentralised? Why can’t we be masters of our own data universe? If my phone acted as a web server then I could expose all of that information without needing those intermediary services. I see a time when we can pass around URLs such as the following: http://jamiesphone.net/location/current - Where is Jamie right now? http://jamiesphone.net/location/2010-04-21 – Where was Jamie on 21st April 2010? http://jamiesphone.net/thoughts/current – What’s on Jamie’s mind right now? http://jamiesphone.net/blog – What documents is Jamie sharing with me? http://jamiesphone.net/calendar/next7days – Where is Jamie planning to be over the next 7 days? and those URLs get served off of the phone in our pockets. If we govern that data then we can control who has access to it and (crucially) how long its available for. Want to wipe yourself off the face of the web? its pretty easy if you’re in control of all the data – just turn your phone off. None of this exists today but I look forward to a time when it does. Opera really were onto something last June when they announced Opera Unite (admittedly Unite only works because Opera provide an intermediary DNS-alike system – it isn’t totally decentralised). Opening up Twitter annotations Last week Twitter held their first developer conference called Chirp where they announced an upcoming new feature called ‘Twitter Annotations’; in short this will allow us to attach metadata to a Tweet thus enhancing the tweet itself. Think of it as a richer version of hashtags. To think of it another way Twitter are turning their data into a humongous Entity-Attribute-Value or triple-tuple store. That alone has huge implications both for the web and Twitter as a whole – the ability to enrich that 140 characters data and thus make it more useful is indeed compelling however today I stumbled upon a blog post from Eugene Mandel entitled Tweet Annotations – a Way to a Metadata Marketplace? where he proposed the idea of allowing tweets to have metadata added by people other than the person who tweeted the original tweet. This idea really fascinated me especially when I read some of the potential uses that Eugene and his commenters suggested. They included: Amazon could attach an ISBN to a tweet that mentions a book. Specialist clients apps for book lovers could be built up around this metadata. Advertisers could pay to place adverts in metadata. The revenue generated from those adverts could be shared with the tweeter or people who add the metadata. Granted, allowing anyone to add metadata to a tweet has the potential to create a spam problem the like of which we haven’t even envisaged but spam hasn’t halted the growth of the web and neither should it halt the growth of data annotations either. The original tweeter should of course be able to determine who can add metadata and whether it should be moderated. As Eugene says himself: Opening publishing tweet annotations to anyone will open the way to a marketplace of metadata where client developers, data mining companies and advertisers can add new meaning to Twitter and build innovative businesses. What Eugene and his followers did not mention is what I think is potentially the most fascinating use of opening up annotations. Google’s success today is built on their page rank algorithm that measures the validity of a web page by the number of incoming links to it and the page rank of the sites containing those links – its a system built on reputation. Twitter annotations could open up a new paradigm however – let’s call it People rank- where reputation can be measured by the metadata that people choose to apply to links and the websites containing those links. Its not hard to see why Google and Microsoft have paid big bucks to get access to the Twitter firehose! Neither of these features, phones as a web server or the ability to add annotations to other people’s tweets, exist today but I strongly believe that they could dramatically enhance the web as we know it today. • Wireless doesn't work on a Lenovo V570

  I've had Ubuntu installed on my HD for about 3 months but ever since I ran into this wireless issue I kinda lost my lust of Ubuntu. I have zero experience getting around with/ using the console command. I have a Lenovo V570. I got the driver update for the broadcom networking card via the Additional Drivers application but that did nothing. I love the look and feel of using Ubuntu but I have no technological experience for the matter. Any help would be awesome. When I scan for wireless connections while in Ubuntu, my computer picks up nothing, while on Win7 it will pick up the handful of wireless networks around my area. My wired connection is fine, but the use of not having wireless on a laptop is rather contradictory to it as a feature. Cheers! Also, I just installed 11.10, if that helps any.
