  • Is it possible to use DLR in a .NET 3.5 website project?

    I'm trying to evaluate an expression stored in a database i.e. "if (Q1 ==2) {result = 3.1;} elseif (Q1 ==3){result=4.1;} else result = 5.9;" Rather than parsing it myself I'm trying to use the DLR. I'm using version .92 from the Codeplex repository and my solution is a .NET 3.5 website; and I'm having conflicts between the System.Core and Microsoft.Scripting.ExtenstionAttribute .dll's. Error = { Description: "'ExtensionAttribute' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Runtime.CompilerServices'.", File: "InternalXmlHelper.vb" } At this time I cannot upgrade to .NET 4.0 and make significant use of the .net 3.5 features (so downgrading is not an option). Any help greatly appreciated.

  • How to deploy a number of disparate project types?

    This question is similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1900269/whats-the-best-way-to-deploy-an-executable-process-on-a-web-server. The situation is this: I'm developing a product that needs to be deployed to a web server. It consists of 4 website projects, a background service, a couple of command-line tools, and two assemblies shared by all of these components. Now, I also happen to administer the server that this product will be deployed on. So I'm familiar with everything that may need to be done to perform an update: Copy website files Replace the service binary Install updated components in the GAC Configure IIS Update database schema After some research it seems that, to reduce deployment time and to be able to let the other sysadmins handle deployment, I want to deploy all of these as an MSI, except that I don't know a thing about installers. I know VS can generate web deployment projects, but where do I go from there? Being able to simply click Next a few times on an installer is my goal for deploying updates. It would also be nice to modularize it, so for example, I could distribute the four websites among multiple servers and have everything appear as individual components in the installer, and as one entity in Add/Remove Programs. Is all of this too much to ask in a single package?

  • What's the smartest way to organize SVN for translated versions of the same project?

    I apologize because I know this has been covered over and over again, but I'm trying to understand the smartest way to cleverly use subversion to our benefit. (*Note: I know our method is not the BEST way to handle localized versions, but external factors are forcing us to work this way on current projects) We have a fairly static website in English...html, css, js, etc. After the site comes back from the translator we will have 5 variations of the same code (this week...then potentially 25 more in the future!). So we'll soon have a folder for EN, FR, SP, DE, etc. Most files (css, js, img) will remain exactly the same; and html files (structure, id's, classes) will only vary based on the localized text inside the elements. Is there any way to use clever SVN folder structuring that would help us out in the event that if a small change is needed, we don't have to manually change the files in each and every translated version of the site?   • How much detail should be in a project plan or spec?

    I have an issue that I feel many programmers can relate to... I have worked on many small scale projects. After my initial paper brain storm I tend to start coding. What I come up with is usually a rough working model of the actual application. I design in a disconnected fashion so I am talking about underlying code libraries, user interfaces are the last thing as the library usually dictates what is needed in the UI. As my projects get bigger I worry that so should my "spec" or design document. The above paragraph, from my investigations, is echoed all across the internet in one fashion or another. When a UI is concerned there is a bit more information but it is UI specific and does not relate to code libraries. What I am beginning to realise is that maybe code is code is code. It seems from my extensive research that there is no 1:1 mapping between a design document and the code. When I need to research a topic I dump information into OneNote and from there I prioritise features into versions and then into related chunks so that development runs in a fairly linear fashion, my tasks tend to look like so: Implement Binary File Reader Implement Binary File Writer Create Object to encapsulate Data for expression to the caller Now any programmer worth his salt is aware that between those three to do items could be a potential wall of code that could expand out to multiple files. I have tried to map the complete code process for each task but I simply don't think it can be done effectively. By the time one mangles pseudo code it is essentially code anyway so the time investment is negated. So my question is this: Am I right in assuming that the best documentation is the code itself. We are all in agreement that a high level overview is needed. How high should this be? Do you design to statement, class or concept level? What works for you?

  • Windows Build System: How to build a project (from its source code) which doesn't have *.sln or Visu

    I'm facing this problem. So, I need to build the support libraries (zlib, libtiff, libpng, libxml2, libiconv) with "Multithreaded DLL" (/MD) & "Multithreaded DLL Debug" (/MDd) run-time options. But the problem is there is no direct way . I mean there is no *.sln / *.vcproj file which I can open in Visual C++ and build it. I'm aware with the GNU build system: $./configure --with-all-sorts-of-required-switches $./make $./make install During my search I've encountered with something called CMake which generates *.vcproj & *.sln file but for that CMakeLists.txt is required. Not all projects provide CMakeLists.txt. I've never compiled anything from Visual C++ Command Line. Generally most projects provide makefile. Now how do I generate *.vcproj / *.sln from this? Can I compile with mingw-make of MinGW? If I can, how do I set different options ("Multi-Threaded"(/MT), "Multi-Threaded Debug"(/MTd), "Multi-Threaded DLL"(/MD), "Multi-Threaded DLL Debug"(/MDd)) for run-time libraries? I don't know what other ways are available. Please throw some light on this.

  • Should client-server code be written in one "project" or two?

    I've been beginning a client-server application. At first I naturally created two projects in Eclipse, two source control repositories, etc. But I'm quickly seeing that there is a bit of shared code between the two that would probably benefit to sharing instead of copying. In addition, I've been learning and trying test-driven development, and it seems to me that it would be easier to test based on real client components rather than having to set up a huge amount of code just to mock something, when the code is probably mostly in the client. My biggest concern in merging the client and server is of security; how do I ensure that the server pieces of the code do not reach an user's computer? So especially if you are writing client-server applications yourself (and especially in Java, though this can turn into a language-agnostic question if you'd like to share your experience with this in other languages), what sort of separation do you keep between your client and server code? Are they just in different packages/namespaces or completely different binaries using shared libraries, or something else entirely? How do you test the code together and yet ship separately?

    I have implemented the Ajax Autocomplete feature in my application using a web service file that querys my database and it works great. One problem I am having is allowing the user to see the item's name, as that's what they are typing in the textbox, but when they select it, it saves the item's ID number instead of the actual name. I want it to behave much like a dropdown list, where I can specify what is seen and entered vs. what is actually saved in the database (in this case, the product ID instead of it's name.)     I want to create a .NET CF application for Windows Mobile 5. In this application, I want to load a COM object based on the ProgID (or CLSID). How do I load this COM object in such a way that I can access its methods as if it were just another .NET object? In addition: how can I configure the projects / solutions in Visual Studio in such a way, that when I debug the application, I am sure that the COM object that is loaded is the one that is installed on the device, not one that may be accessible through the debugger? I have tried adding the .ocx file as a Reference, but I get an error, and I am not sure about 'question 2'. I have also tried loading the COM object using Type type = Type.GetTypeFromProgID("my.prog.id") MyObject myObject = (MyObject)Activator.CreateInstance(type) ...but this results in an InvalidCastException on the second line.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 backup includes volume with MSSQL data

    I'm using wbadmin to schedule image backup every night on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard server. Ever since installing MS-SQL 2008 Express R2, wbadmin wants to also backup the volume where the MS-SQL data files are located (L:). I'm using -allCritical to make sure bare metal restore will work. command-line: wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\myserver\backup$\myserver\%DATE% -include:C: -allCritical -quiet I don't want to do this, because I'm backing up MS-SQL manually elsewhere. It worked just fine only taking C: before I installed MS-SQL.

  • eclipse show errors but compiles when external makefile

    I have some c++ code using CImg and Eigen libraries. At the c++ code I define a plugin like this #define cimg_plugin1 "my_plugin.h" #include "CImg.h" The plugin contains many method definitions that are used at the c++ code. I also have a makefile that when called from the command line (./make), allows me to compile everything, and generates an executable. I want to import this code into a new Eclipse project, and I do it so: NewProjectC++ projectmakefile projectempty project unmark "Use default location", and select the folder containing my code at the filesystem ProjectpropertiesC/C++ Buildunmark "Use default build command" and set it to use my makefile Also in project propertiesC/C++ GeneralPaths and SymbolsAdd paths to folders containing Eigen and CImg Rebuild index Clean project Restart eclipse When I build the project, eclipse tells me I have more than 1000 errors in "my_plugin.h", but it is capable to generate the executable. Even though, I would like to get rid of this errors, because they are annoying. Also, if I want to open the declaration of CImg methods used at the plugin, I can't. I know it has been asked before, but any of the solutions I found were satisfactory for me (most of them enumerated at the previous list). The sources I visited are the following, and I would be really happy if you find and tell me others I didn't see. Some of my class is management class like UINavigationController, but they're not one of them, subclasses from NSObject. Of course, I can place a NSObject instance on IB, but it cannot have a child node. Is there a way to enable adding child node to subclass of NSObject?

  • How do I relocate assemblies from a deployment project without breaking application references?

    Hi, I have recently refactored a lot of my applications existing code and I am now looking at tidying up the deployment side of things. The existing installer application installs everything in the application folder (with the exclusion of a couple of config files which are located in a sub folder). However, I have multiple applications which all use some common assemblies and my goal is to relocate a these particular assemblies to the "Common Files" folder in the program files directory. NB: I have read a lot about the GAC but I have no experience with it and also read a few horror stories, so trying to get a simple solution for the time being. I managed to get the assemblies installed into the Common Files folder, however, as a result (typical I.T.) I have broken my app! If I copy the assemblies back into the application folder it works fine so the problem is obviously to do with how my app is referencing the assemblies. To get the installer to install the assemblies into the Common Files folder I just updated the Folder property of each assembly in the Detected Dependencies list. My thoughts were when I did that the installer would somehow update my application to tell it to look in that folder for them but that doens't appear to be the case. What exactly am I doing wrong here?

    So I've started to dig into storage fundamentals and found that in order to calculate the IOPS of a HDD you need to know the internal transfer rate of the drive (time it takes data to move from the platters to internal disk's cache). I went on newegg and even a few vendor sites and could not find this info published for any HDDs. Is it sometimes called something else? Take this link to a seagate HDD for instance. Nowhere do I see "internal transfer rate", but I do see something called "Sustained Data Rate OD"- is that the same thing? Just so you know where I'm getting this info (Book: "Information Storage and Management Storing, Managing..."): Consider an example with the following specifications provided for a disk: The average seek time is 5 ms in a random I/O environment; therefore, T = 5 ms. Disk rotation speed of 15,000 revolutions per minute or 250 revolutions per second — from which rotational latency (L) can be determined, which is one-half of the time taken for a full rotation or L = (0.5/250 rps expressed in ms). 40 MB/s internal data transfer rate, from which the internal transfer time (X) is derived based on the block size of the I/O — for example, an I/O with a block size of 32 KB; therefore X = 32 KB/40 MB. Consequently, the time taken by the I/O controller to serve an I/O of block size 32 KB is (TS) = 5 ms + (0.5/250) + 32 KB/40 MB = 7.8 ms. Therefore, the maximum number of I/Os serviced per second or IOPS is (1/TS) = 1/(7.8 × 10^-3) = 128 IOPS.
