• Textarea to paragraphs

  When I have to render textarea content to the front end I usually pass it thru a function that converts newlines to <br/> tags and double newlines signal paragraph tags so blocks of text get surrounded by <p> and </p> tags. To save time I usually use a ready made PHP function from the wordpress codebase. You can get the link from the man himself: http://ma.tt/scripts/autop/ If you check it out you'll see it does some heavy lifting with about 20 regular expressions. I know I could use a wysiwyg editor (like TinyMCE or CKEditor) that can format the data on the client and then send it to the server (most of them add <p>..</p> tags by default) but I want to know the experience of others in handling raw textarea input and then displaying it on the front end.

  I need to store large amount of small data objects (millions of rows per month). Once they're saved they wont change. I need to : store them securely use them to analysis (mostly time-oriented) retrieve some raw data occasionally It would be nice if it could be used with JasperReports or BIRT My first shot was Infobright Community - just a column-oriented, read-only storing mechanism for MySQL On the other hand, people says that NoSQL approach could be better. Hadoop+Hive looks promissing, but the documentation looks poor and the version number is less than 1.0 . I heard about Hypertable, Pentaho, MongoDB .... Do you have any recommendations ? (Yes, I found some topics here, but it was year or two ago)

• Round prices up to nearest 5 after conversion in oscommerce

  Hi there, A conversion question relating to prices in oscommerce: I am needing for a custom currency conversion to round the USD prices up to the nearest 5$ to avoid prices being displayed at silly prices such as $263. I am trying to convert to an int and round the following line : $curr-display_price($listing['products_price'], tep_get_tax_rate($listing['products_tax_class_id'])); ( as for some reason the price is displayed as a string, im guessing to include the currency sign) However not having much luck. Does anybody know where the root conversion takes place as it might be easier for me to round() or ceil() from there when it is a raw integer Or any other ideas of how I can round the conversion? • Rackspace Cloud Sites: Compute Cycles exploding. Very expensive.

  Hi All, Since last week my compute cycles (CC) went through the roof (Rackspace Cloud Sites). Normally I stay under the 10,000 cycles per month . Now this month I already have more than 75,000 compute cycles. I don't have more visitors and I did not change anything in the code. I looked in the raw log files, that didn't help either... This explosion of CC already costs me more than 750 USD right now. And still counting. Anyone know what to do? I have contacted Rackspace last week. But still no solution/answer.... Looks like Rackspace is liking the money! Help! Thanks.

• Any Win32 APIs to get the screenshots?

  Hi all, I am writing an app, which needs to take the screen shots automatically (just like pressing PrintScreen button). So please suggest me how to get this done. A raw 24 bit BMP image would suffice. PLEASE NOTE: My app is in C, so any win32 APIs that can be called from my code is what I am looking for. (Sometimes back I had got an example code from codeproject which used to get the screen shots but the mouse pointer user to blink when the screen shot is taken. As multiple shots are taken this looks irritating to the user, so I don't want the mouse pointer to blink!) Regards, Chethan KR

  Hello, I was wondering if there are any free / open source solutions that will start and stop a windows service based on load? I have some pubsub subscriber services that do background work which is not critical. Ideally i would like tot be able to automate things so that these services could start if memory/cpu/disk i/o was under a certain threshold and stop gracefully if that threshold was met. • How can I play compressed sound files in C# in a portable way?

  Is there a portable, not patent-restricted way to play compressed sound files in C# / .Net? I want to play short "jingle" sounds on various events occuring in the program. System.Media.SoundPlayer can handle only WAV, but those are typically to big to embed in a downloadable apllication. MP3 is protected with patents, so even if there was a fully managed decoder/player it wouldn't be free to redistribute. The best format available would seem to be OGG Vorbis, but I had no luck getting any C# Vorbis libraries to work (I managed to extract a raw PCM with csvorbis but I don't know how to play it afterwards). I neither want to distribute any binaries with my application nor depend on P/Invoke, as the project should run at least on Windows and Linux. I'm fine with bundling .Net assemblies as long as they are license-compatible with GPL. [this question is a follow up to a mailing list discussion on mono-dev mailing list a year ago]

• Exclude a URL from rewrite in .htaccess with "last" flag

  WordPress has been installed as a blog into osCommerce. I'm trying to get the WordPress RSS feed to work. All WP core files exist, but I get all kinds of errors accessing the feed at mydomain.com/wordpress/feed/, like 404s, "the feed can't be updated because the source file is no longer available," or even raw php code in the browser from the osCommerce feed file. I think the problem is the rewrite rules for osCommerce, and I'm thinking if I can exclude the WP feed URL from rewrite, it will fix the feed or help find the real issue. Looking around SO, I found a solution to use the "last" flag on a URL to prevent it from being rewritten. Problem is, the existing .htaccess already has a rule with a "last" flag on it: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ http://www.mydomain.com/index.php?cPath=$1 [L] Is there a way to not rewrite the WP feed URL? Can another "last" rule be added? I'd like to have some definite things to try before messing with .htaccess to avoid disrupting the site.

• Can you find a pattern to sync files knowing only dates and filenames?

  Imagine if you will a operating system that had the following methods for files Create File: Creates (writes) a new file to disk. Calling this if a file exists causes a fault. Update File: Updates an existing file. Call this if a file doesn't exist causes a fault. Read File: Reads data from a file. Enumerate files: Gets all files in a folder. Files themselves in this operating system only have the following meta data: Created Time: The original date and time the file was created, by the Create File method. Modified Time: The date and time the file was last modified by the Update File method. If the file has never been modified, this will equal the Create Time. You have been given the task of writing an application which will sync the files between two directories (lets call them bill and ted) on a machine. However it is not that simple, the client has required that The application never faults (see methods above). That while the application is running the users can add and update files and those will be sync'd next time the application runs. Files can be added to either the ted or bill directories. File names cannot be altered. The application will perform one sync per time it is run. The application must be almost entirely in memory, in other words you cannot create a log of filenames and write that to disk and then check that the next time. The exception to point 6 is that you can store date and times between runs. Each date/time is associated with a key labeled A through J (so you have 10 to use) so you can compare keys between runs. There is no way to catch exceptions in the application. Answer will be accepted based on the following conditions: First answer to meet all requirements will be accepted. If there is no way to meet all requirements, the answer which ensures the smallest amount of missed changes per sync will be accepted. A bounty will be created (100 points) as soon as possible for the prize. The winner will be selected one day before the bounty ends. • IE6 not rendering the page

  I have a web page which consists of a few component pages. When a user requests the page, the server assembles its component pages into the main page and sends it back to the browser. When there is an update on the component page, IE6 browser cannot see the updated content. However, IE7 and Firefox are fine. Checking with Fiddler, the http response returns 200, If-Modified-Since header is the same as the last modified date of the main page, the response raw html also has the updated content. It seems that IE6 browser abandons the rendering of the page because If-Modified-Since is the same as the last modified date of the main page. Does anyone know how to overcome this issue in IE6?

• Screenshot of the Nexus One from adb?

  My goal is to be able to type a one word command and get a screenshot from a rooted Nexus One attached by USB. So far, I can get the framebuffer which I believe is a 32bit xRGB888 raw image by pulling it like this: adb pull /dev/graphics/fb0 fb0 From there though, I'm having a hard time getting it converted to a png. I'm trying with ffmpeg like this: ffmpeg -vframes 1 -vcodec rawvideo -f rawvideo -pix_fmt rgb8888 -s 480x800 -i fb0 -f image2 -vcodec png image.png That creates a lovely purple image that has parts that vaguely resemble the screen, but it's by no means a clean screenshot.

• Django QuerySet filter + order_by + limit

  So I have a Django app that processes test results, and I'm trying to find the median score for a certain assessment. I would think that this would work: e = Exam.objects.all() total = e.count() median = int(round(total / 2)) median_exam = Exam.objects.filter(assessment=assessment.id).order_by('score')[median:1] median_score = median_exam.score But it always returns an empty list. I can get the result I want with this: e = Exam.objects.all() total = e.count() median = int(round(total / 2)) exams = Exam.objects.filter(assessment=assessment.id).order_by('score') median_score = median_exam[median].score I would just prefer not to have to query the entire set of exams. I thought about just writing a raw MySQL query that looks something like: SELECT score FROM assess_exam WHERE assessment_id = 5 ORDER BY score LIMIT 690,1 But if possible, I'd like to stay within Django's ORM. Mostly, it's just bothering me that I can't seem to use order_by with a filter and a limit. Any ideas?

• How do I delete a foreign key in SQLAlchemy?

  I'm using SQLAlchemy Migrate to keep track of database changes and I'm running into an issue with removing a foreign key. I have two tables, t_new is a new table, and t_exists is an existing table. I need to add t_new, then add a foreign key to t_exists. Then I need to be able to reverse the operation (which is where I'm having trouble). t_new = sa.Table("new", meta.metadata, sa.Column("new_id", sa.types.Integer, primary_key=True) ) t_exists = sa.Table("exists", meta.metadata, sa.Column("exists_id", sa.types.Integer, primary_key=True), sa.Column( "new_id", sa.types.Integer, sa.ForeignKey("new.new_id", onupdate="CASCADE", ondelete="CASCADE"), nullable=False ) ) This works fine: t_new.create() t_exists.c.new_id.create() But this does not: t_exists.c.new_id.drop() t_new.drop() Trying to drop the foreign key column gives an error: 1025, "Error on rename of '.\my_db_name\#sql-1b0_2e6' to '.\my_db_name\exists' (errno: 150)" If I do this with raw SQL, i can remove the foreign key manually then remove the column, but I haven't been able to figure out how to remove the foreign key with SQLAlchemy? How can I remove the foreign key, and then the column?

• Automating WebTrends analysis

  Every week I access server logs processed by WebTrends (for about 7 profiles) and copy ad clickthrough and visitor information into Excel spreadsheets. A lot of it is just accessing certain sections and finding the right title and then copying the unique visitor information. I tried using WebTrends' built-in query tool but that is really poorly done (only uses a drag-and-drop system instead of text-based) and it has a maximum number of parameters and maximum length of queries to query with. As far as I know, the tools in WebTrends are not suitable to my purpose of automating the entire web metrics gathering process. I've gotten access to the raw server logs, but it seems redundant to parse that given that they are already being processed by WebTrends. To me it seems very scriptable, but how would I go about doing that? Is screen-scraping an option?

  Hi All I have been using spring for a while as my IOC. It has also a very nice way of injecting properties in your beans. Now I am participating in a new project where the IOC is Guice. I dont understand fully the concept how should I inject properties in to my beans using Guice. The question : Is it actually possible to inject raw properties ( strings , ints ) into my guice beans. If the answer is no , than maybe you know some nice Properties Framework for java. Because right now I wanted to use the ResourceBundle class for simple properties management in my app. But after using spring for a while this just dont seem seriously enought for me.

• iPhone SDK: How to record voices with ambient noise supression?

  Can anyone point me in the right direction on how I would minimize ambient noise while recording someone speaking using the iPhone SDK Core Audio? I'm guessing a band-pass filter that eliminates any frequencies above and below the human vocal range might work. I have no idea how I would implement band filters on audio in the SDK though. The optimum solution would be one that eliminates the noise from the stream before it is written to memory/disk. Some sample code would be appreciated.

  Seriously, machines refusing to save data because files THEY HAVE OPEN are locked BY THEMSELVES. Getting 200+ connections simultaneously takes it out despite a plethora of available disk and network bandwidth. You can't turn off CUPS you have to COMPILE WITHOUT IT. DFS support is completely broken and pretty much useless in the current state (as in DFS for load balancing, not replication). We should just move to NFS and find a DFS like namespace aggregator.

• Types of PNG image in iPhone app

  I have an iPhone app that picks images from my internet server. It picks images with png extension but only PNG-24 is workings. The problem is that PNG-24 need some disk space and internet bandwith in iphone. I tried using PNG-8 but the iphone does not recognize it. Someone knows if I have a way to use PNG-8 into my app?
