• What is wrong with my XSLT for the XML File?

  Actually my XML file has SVG info, and my Project lead wants me to develop an XSLT for the XMl file to convert it in to a PDF file. But when I try to do so I am failing to convert the XML file to PDF, can anyone help me out in this....... • Apache & SVN on Ubuntu - Post-commit hook fails silently, pre-commit hook "Permission Denied"

  I've been struggling for the past couple days to get post-commit email notifications working on my SVN server (running via HTTP with Apache2 on Ubuntu 9.10). SVN commits work fine, but for some reason the hooks are not being properly executed. Here are the configuration settings: - Users access the repo via HTTP with the apache dav_svn module (I created users/passwords via htpasswd in a dav_svn.passwd file). dav_svn.conf: <Location /svn/repos> DAV svn SVNPath /home/svn/repos AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion Repository" AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/dav_svn.passwd Require valid-user </Location> I created a post-commit hook file that writes a simple message to a file in the repository root: /home/svn/repos/hooks/post-commit: #!/bin/sh REPOS="$1" REV="$2" /bin/echo 'worked' > ${REPOS}/postcommit.log I set the entire repository to be owned by www-data (the apache user), and assigned 755 permissions to the post-commit script when I test the post-commit script using the www-data user in an empty environment, it works: sudo -u www-data env - /home/svn/repos/hooks/post-commit /home/svn/repos 7 But when I commit on a client machine, the commit is successful, but the post-commit script does not seem to be executed. I also tried running a simple script for the pre-commit hook, and I get an error, even with an empty pre-commit script: "Commit failed (details follow): Can't create null stdout for hook '/home/svn/repos/hooks/pre-commit': Permission denied" I did a few searches on Google for this error and I presume that this is an issue with the apache user (www-data) not having adequate permissions, specifically to execute /dev/null. I also read that the reason post-commit fails silently is because that it doesn't report with stdout. Anyway, I've also tried giving the apache user (www-data) ownership of the entire repository, and edited the apache virtualhost to allow operations on the server root, and I'm still getting permission denied /etc/apache2/sites-available/primarydomain.conf <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! • package issue with ubuntu 10.10 and passenger requirements

  I'm trying to get Passenger working with Ubuntu 10.10 and I'm running into a problem. It seems that the passenger installer is not recognizing the virtual package. I'm getting this error: Code: passenger-install-apache2-module ... * OpenSSL support for Ruby... not found ... And then it says, run this: * To install OpenSSL support for Ruby: Please run apt-get install libopenssl-ruby as root. When I run the above command, it refers to the libruby package: sudo apt-get install libopenssl-ruby Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Note, selecting 'libruby' instead of 'libopenssl-ruby' libruby is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 43 not upgraded. • Using open2300 with Ubuntu

  Hello, I am currently running Ubuntu 8.10 and have been trying to use Open2300 to read data from a Lacrosse WS-2310 weather station and report it to the WUnderground server. The program compiles fine but when I try to run it, it does one of two things: usually it pauses for about 4 minutes, then prints "could not reset" to the screen. But sometimes it just hangs forever. It seems like my computer is unable to communicate with the weather station. I have set the serial port as /dev/ttyS0 in the open2300.conf file and i have also tried /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, etc with the same result. As far as I can tell, there are no other settings regarding how Open2300 communicates with the device. Is my serial port locked somehow? It could be something as simple as an incorrect configuration for my serial port or something, but I would have no idea how to check that or change the configuration. • Can't Install libcurl PHP on Ubuntu Linux

  I am trying to use the new facebook api and it requires libcurl PHP. I used sudo apt-get install php5-curl sudo apachectl -k restart And it didn't work. I get the same error and the phpinfo() page says nothing about libcurl. The source of this problem is probably that I built some of the tools from source (apache2, php), but then I got bored so installed a lot of the extensions with the package manager. But I'm not exactly how to go about diagnosing the point of failure. The apt-get install for curl definitely worked, and can be found in /usr/lib/php5/20060613/curl.so I think a lot of my confusion stems from not knowing which files go where, and what purpose they have.   I have this code where I have a made a character using 20 paths and put it into a set. Now when I animate the set, the first transformation runs smoothly, the second animation stutters, the third animation doesn't happen as it should and the 4th animation kills my pc, the browser hangs and in the task manager I can see that it consumes up to 70% of CPU. How can I avoid this and free the resources so all the animations run smoothly. *I have to execute 10 simple y-axis transformation animations on that character.   I've picked up Programming Challenges and found a Yahtzee! problem which I will simplify: There are 13 scoring categories There are 13 rolls by a player (comprising a play) Each roll must fit in a distinct category The goal is to find the maximum score for a play (the optimal placement of rolls in categories); score(play) returns the score for a play Brute-forcing to find the maximum play score requires 13! (= 6,227,020,800) score() calls. I choose simulated annealing to find something close to the highest score, faster. Though not deterministic, it's good enough. I have a list of 13 rolls of 5 die, like: ((1,2,3,4,5) #1 (1,2,6,3,4),#2 ... (1,4,3,2,2) #13 ) And a play (1,5,6,7,2,3,4,8,9,10,13,12,11) passed into score() returns a score for that play's permutation. How do I choose a good "neighboring state"? For random-restart, I can simply choose a random permutation of nos. 1-13, put them in a vector, and score them. In the traveling salesman problem, here's an example of a good neighboring state: "The neighbours of some particular permutation are the permutations that are produced for example by interchanging a pair of adjacent cities." I have a bad feeling about simply swapping two random vector positions, like so: (1,5,6,7, 2 , 3,4,8,9,10, 13, 12,11) # switch 2 and 13 (1,5,6,7, 13, 3,4,8,9,10, 2 , 12,11) # now score this one But I have no evidence and don't know how to select a good neighboring state. • Opening port 80 with Java application on Ubuntu

  What I need to do is running a Java application which is a RESTful service server side writtern by Restlet. And this service will be called by another app running on Google App Engine. Because of the restriction of GAE, every http call is limited to port 80 and 443 (http and https) with HttpUrlConnection class. As a result, I have to deploy my server side application on port 80 or 443. However, because the app is running on Ubuntu, and those ports under 1024 cannot be accessed by non-root user, then a Access Denied exception will be thrown when I run my app. The solutions that have come into my mind includs: Changing the security policy of JRE, which is the files resides in /lib/security/java.policy, to grantjava.net.SocketPermission "*.80" "listen, connect, accept, resolve" permission?However, neither using command line to include this file or overrides the content in JRE's java.policy file, the same exception keeps coming out. try to login as a root user, however because my unfamiliarity with Unix, I don't know how to do it. another solution I haven't try is to map all calls to 80 to a higher port like 1234, then I can deploy my app on 1234 without problem, and GAE call send request to port 80. But how to connect the missing gap is still a problem. Currently I am using a "hacking" method, which is to package the application into a jar file, and sudo running the jar file with root privilege. It works now, but definitely not appropriate in the real deployment environment. So if anyone have any idea about the solution, thanks very much!

  When running a bash script on ubuntu 9.10, I get different behavior from bash echo's "-e" option depending on whether or not I'm running as root. Consider this script: $ cat echo-test if [ "`whoami`" = "root" ]; then echo "Running as root" fi echo Testing /bin/echo -e /bin/echo -e "foo\nbar" echo Testing bash echo -e echo -e "foo\nbar" When run as non-root user, I see this output: $ ./echo-test Testing /bin/echo -e foo bar Testing bash echo -e foo bar When run as root, I see this output: $ sudo ./echo-test Running as root Testing /bin/echo -e foo bar Testing bash echo -e -e foo bar Notice the "-e" being echoed in the last case ("-e foo" instead of "foo" on the second-to-last line). When running a script as root, the echo command runs as if "-e" was given and, if -e is given, the option itself is echoed. I can understand some subtle differences in behavior between /bin/echo and bash echo, but I would expect bash echo to behave the same no matter which user invokes it. Anyone know why this is the case? Is this a bug in bash echo? FYI -- I'm running GNU bash, version 4.0.33(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu)

• Deploying a Rails app on an Ubuntu server using Git

  I'm completely new to Linux, but today I find myself setting up a server (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS lucid) from scratch to host a Rails application. Anyway, I managed to get a Rails app up and running on the server itself, but I had to scrap that because I want to use Git. So I setup a git repository on the server, then pushed all the code from my local machine to the repository. Buuuut, of course Git doesn't actually store the files themselves in the repository -- all the code for my Rails app is now only on my local machine. How am I supposed to tell the server to host that? Right now my solution is to have the server use git to pull the code from its own repository. That's the code I'll host for all the world to see. In order to update the code, I guess I'll have to do something like this: Update the code on my local machine. Do some git adds, git commits, and a git push. On the server, do a git pull to update the code. So my question is, am I doing this the right way? enter code here

• Hosting a website on Heroku.... I know how to, but im running into problems!

  I'm starting to learn more on the back-end scale of programing. Recently I started up Heroku for the second or third time. This time I actually installed the Git update to my Mac and installed Heroku in the terminal. I wanted to upload a static html site with the sinatra gem. Everything worked out fine inside the terminal, though I added sinatra after I got everything working and the file with the site hooked up to Heroku. In my logs I did see that I was missing the sinatra gem, so I installed it. My site contains both the proper app.rb and config.ru files. I have nothing showing up online. Just a blank screen! Contacting Heroku on this problem has been very difficult. • Hosting a website on Heroku.... I know how to, but im running into problems!

  I'm starting to learn more on the back-end scale of programing. Recently I started up Heroku for the second or third time. This time I actually installed the Git update to my Mac and installed Heroku in the terminal. I wanted to upload a static html site with the Sinatra gem. Everything worked out fine inside the terminal, though I added Sinatra after I got everything working and the file with the site hooked up to Heroku. In my logs I did see that I was missing the Sinatra gem, so I installed it. My site contains both the proper app.rb and config.ru files. I have nothing showing up online. Just a blank screen! Contacting Heroku on this problem has been very difficult. • What are some internet trends that you've noticed over the past ~10 years? [closed]

  I'll give an example of one that I've noticed: the number of web sites that ask for your email address (GOOG ID, YAHOO! ID, etc.) has skyrocketed. I can come up with no legitimate reason for this other than (1) password reset [other ways to do this], or (2) to remind you that you have an account there, based upon the time of your last visit. Why does a web site need to know your email address (Google ID, etc.) if all you want to do is... download a file (no legit reason whatsoever) play a game (no legit reason whatsoever) take an IQ test or search a database (no legit reason whatsoever) watch a video or view a picture (no legit reason whatsoever) read a forum (no legit reason whatsoever) post on a forum (mildly legit reason: password reset) newsletter (only difference between a newsletter and a blog is that you're more likely to forget about the web site than you are to forget about your email address -- the majority of web sites do not send out newsletters, however, so this can't be the justification) post twitter messages or other instant messaging (mildly legit reason: password reset) buy something (mildly legit reasons: password reset + giving you a copy of a receipt that they can't delete, as receipts stored on their server can be deleted) On the other hand, I can think of plenty of very shady reasons for asking for this information: so the NSA, CIA, FBI, etc. can very easily track what you do by reading your email or asking GOOG, etc. what sites you used your GOOG ID at to use the password that you provide for your account in order to get into your email account (most people use the same password for all of their accounts), find all of your other accounts in your inbox, and then get into all of those accounts sell your email address to spammers These reasons, I believe, are why you are constantly asked to provide your email address. I can come up with no other explanations whatsoever. Question 1: Can anyone think of any legitimate or illegitimate reasons for asking for someone's email address? Question 2: What are some other interesting internet trends of the past ~10 years?
