  Given A, on the order of 10^20, I'd like to quickly obtain a list of the first few prime numbers greater than A. OK, my needs aren't quite that exact - it's alright if occasionally a composite number ends up on the list. What's the fastest way to enumerate the (probable) primes greater than A? Is there a quicker way than stepping through all of the integers greater than A (other than obvious multiples of say, 2 and 3) and performing a primality test for each of them? If not, and the only method is to test each integer, what primality test should I be using?

  If I have a SQL statement such as: SELECT TOP 5 * FROM Person WHERE Name LIKE 'Sm%' ORDER BY ID DESC PRINT @@ROWCOUNT -- shows '5' Is there anyway to get a value like @@ROWCOUNT that is the actual count of all of the rows that match the query without re-issuing the query again sans the TOP 5? The actual problem is a much more complex and intensive query that performs beautifully since we can use TOP n or SET ROWCOUNT n but then we cannot get a total count which is required to display paging information in the UI correctly. Presently we have to re-issue the query with a @Count = COUNT(ID) instead of *.

  I have a situation where I need to extract dates from the file names whose general pattern is [filename_]YYYYMMDD[.fileExtension] e.g. "xxx_20100326.xls" or x2v_20100326.csv The below program does the work //Number of charecter in the substring is set to 8 //since the length of YYYYMMDD is 8 public static string ExtractDatesFromFileNames(string fileName) { return fileName.Substring(fileName.IndexOf("_") + 1, 8); } Is there any better option of achieving the same? • What is the reason not to use select * ?

  I've seen a number of people claim that you should specifically name each column you want in your select query. Assuming I'm going to use all of the columns anyway, why would I not use SELECT *? Even considering the question from 9/24, I don't think this is an exact duplicate as I'm approaching the issue from a slightly different perspective. One of our principles is to not optimize before it's time. With that in mind, it seems like using SELECT * should be the preferred method until it is proven to be a resource issue or the schema is pretty much set in stone. Which, as we know, won't occur until development is completely done. That said, is there an overriding issue to not use SELECT *?

I dread having to deal with HTML, JavaScript etc. to build a high quality browser based user interface. I've got the full suite of Telerik controls. Is it possible to build a polished, somewhat feature rich browser UI while being sheltered from the archaic environment of HTML and JavaScript? • Java replace all capturing groups

  Hi, If I have a regex with a capturing group, e.g. foo(g.*f). If I match this against a string and want to replace the first capturing group in all matches with baz so that foog___f blah foog________f is converted to: foobaz blah foobaz There doesn't appear to be any easy way to do this using the standard libraries, because the Matcher.replaceAll() method will only replace all matches of the entire pattern, am I missing something? Obviously I can just iterate through the matches, store the start and end index of each capturing group, then go back and replace them, but is there an easier way? Thanks, Don

  Hey guys, I'd like to simulate a flag in an xslt script. The idea is for template foo to set a flag (or a counter variable, or anything), so that it can be accessed from template bar. Bar isn't called from foo, but from a common parent template (otherwise I would pass a parameter to it).   I'm trying to scrape some content off another site and I'm not sure why BeautifulSoup is producing this output. It is only finding a blank space inside the match, but the real HTML contains a large amount of markup. I apologize if this is something stupid on my part. I'm new to python.   Hi folks, If i have a request for a resource in my ASP.NET MVC1 (or 2) web app for a static resource, say ... an image or a javascript file or a css file ... does the .NET framework try and see if the request matches the route list ... and eventually can't find a controller for it? eg. Resource: /Content/Images/Foo.png Does this request go through my route list .. fails to match any controllers / actions to this request and then .. i donno ... attempt that path directly?

If the code executes without any problem then i will commit the changes otherwise i will rollback the database back to its original state.   How do you escape a double quote character inside a MS SQL 'contains' function? SELECT decision FROM table WHERE CONTAINS(decision, '34" AND wide') Normally contains() expects double quotes to surround an exact phrase to match, but I want to search for an actual double quote character. I've tried escaping it with \, `, and even another double quote, but none of that has worked. P.S. I realize a simple example like this could also be done using the LIKE statement, but I need to use the fulltext search function. The query I provided here has been simplified from my actual query for example purposes.

• java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError when the file is there

  I've tried to look around for postings that might help me, cant find any. I am deploying an ear to JBoss4 server, and I started having this problem since I added a new project. this new project is defined as Java project in eclipse, and the EAR project has an EJB project that has the new Java project as one of the projects as its dependent upon - if deployed on JBoss locally through eclipse, there's no problem and everything goes smoothly But when being deployed to JBoss in test environment (outside eclipse), kept getting java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError on one of the classes that are defined in the new Java project. I looked inside the EAR file to get to the jar (EJB project), and then inside the jar, I can see the directory structure and all the class files from the new Java project - ie. The class that it complains about is right there inside the EAR-JAR and matching the exact structure that it's looking for. I am at lost to what else I can look at. Any pointers are greatly appreciated! Thanks

• How do you render a rails partial that is outside of a namespace in a view that is inside of a namespace?

  I've got a 'static' controller and static views that are pages that don't utilize ruby in their views. For these pages, I have a sitemap partial that is generated programatically and used in the application layout file. Namespaced routes still use the application layout file but are taking the static routes and trying to namespace them too. Here's the relevant portion of the route file: namespace :admin do resources :verse_categories resources :verses resources :songs resources :flowers resources :visits, :except => [:new, :create] end match ':action' => 'static' root :to => 'static#home' Here's the error I'm getting: No route matches {:controller=>"admin/static", :action=>"about"} Note that about is one of the static pages that the sitemap partial uses. So, how can I resolve this routing issue so that it's not trying to find my static sites inside of the admin namespace? Any help would be appreciated!
