• Mouse button and keypress counter for Linux?

  I would like to have some kind of statistic of my daily mouse/keyboard usage to help me make my keyboard layout a little bit more efficient. There is already an question about how to do this on windows, but I would like to know I anyone is aware if this is possible under linux. Another thing I already found is key-mon, a little program for screencasts that displays your mouse and keyboard presses on the screen, which would help me achieve what I want with a little bit of python coding by myself. • WinXP keyboard input repeat rate problem

  I have problem similar to http://superuser.com/questions/33981/problems-with-kvm-switch-and-keyboard-repeat-rate-on-windows-xp: When I press and hold some key it's repeated random number of times, after that repeat stops and I need to release key and press it again to make repeat continue. If there's simultaneous sound playback and repeat is stopped, sound's stuck while I hold key with unpleasant drumming as if there's some audio problem. This issue is reproducible in WinXP Safe Mode. On the same config under Linux there's no issue. My config: List item PS/2 Logitech Keyboard USB Mouse MB M3A/H-HDMI WinXP Pro English SP2 with added Russian layout (WinXP loads via GRUB2) Realtek audio drivers for AC97 Thanks for your suggestions J

• A Year of Upheaval for Procurement Professionals-New Report & Webinar

  2013 will see significant changes in priorities and initiatives among procurement professionals as they balance the needs of their enterprises with efforts to add capabilities for long-term procurement success. In response, procurement managers will expand their organization’s spend influence via supplier relationship management, sourcing, and category management. These findings are part of the new report, “2013 Procurement Key Issues: Going Deeper and Broader to Deliver Borderless Procurement Services,” by the Hackett Group. The authors say that compared to similar studies over the last five years, 2013 is registering the greatest year-over-year changes in priorities for both procurement performance and capability issues. Three Important PrioritiesThe survey found that procurement professionals are focusing their attention in three key areas. Cost reduction. Controlling expenses is always a high priority, but with 90 percent of the respondents now placing this at the top of their performance concerns, the Hackett analysts say this “clearly shows that, for better or worse, cost reduction is king” in 2013. Technology innovation. Innovation has shot up significantly in the priority rankings and is now tied with spend influence for second among procurement professionals. Sixty-five percent of the survey participants said pursuing game-changing innovation and technology is a top procurement initiative. Managing supply risk. This area registered a sharp rise in importance because of its role in protecting profits, Hackett says. • Vim Stuck In Insert Mode

  I've been using Vim for several months now via my web host (they allow putty access). All of a sudden, the escape key has become unresponsive. I cannot exist insert or any other mode by simply hitting escape. I have to hit F1 which brings up the help in vim and kicks me into command mode. I'm most certain that my escape key on my keyboard is functioning fine since all of my windows shortcuts that use the escape key operate normally. I know this is a ridiculous question and I'm certain there's a lot more to look into regarding a solution. What I really need is a solid lead as to where to start looking. Things that might help: I'm using vim via putty I'm logging in using jailshell I'm not root

• Velocity control of the player, why doesn't this work?

  I have the following code inside a while True loop: if abs(playerx) < MAXSPEED: if moveLeft: playerx -= 1 if moveRight: playerx += 1 if abs(playery) < MAXSPEED: if moveDown: playery += 1 if moveUp: playery -= 1 if moveLeft == False and abs(playerx) > 0: playerx += 1 if moveRight == False and abs(playerx) > 0: playerx -= 1 if moveUp == False and abs(playery) > 0: playery += 1 if moveDown == False and abs(playery) > 0: playery -= 1 player.x += playerx player.y += playery if player.left < 0 or player.right > 1000: player.x -= playerx if player.top < 0 or player.bottom > 600: player.y -= playery The intended result is that while an arrow key is pressed, playerx or playery increments by one at every iteration until it reaches MAXSPEED and stays at MAXSPEED. And that when the player stops pressing that arrow key, his speed decreases until it reaches 0. To me, this code explicitly says that... But what actually happens is that playerx or playery keeps incrementing regardless of MAXSPEED and continues moving even after the player stops pressing the arrow key. I keep rereading but I'm completely baffled by this weird behavior. Any insights? Thanks.

• Alt+Tab doesn't work when Citrix is in full screen

  I am using 12.04 and in my work we connect to a Citrix XenDesktop. I've installed Citrix Receiver, using this link and it all works perfectly. But, I have a problem. Alt+Tab doesn't work in full screen mode. There are several adjustments you can choose when login in, with the Settings "button" up in the right corner. (Sorry, I couldn't post an image because I'm new.) I like to work with 95% full screen, with the windows key combination in "full screen mode only". This allows me to use the windows combinations when a work in full screen, inside the remote computer (inside Citrix). I can Alt+Tab past the "Citrix computer" when I put it down to 95%. It also allows me to use the "Ubuntu menu" on the left side. But I really can't make this work in Ubuntu. I've tried to put the windows key combination to "remote server only" and yes, it works inside the server, but also only there and the Ubuntu menu stops working. (in example print Screen. I am using this for documentation.) When I try to Tab from one place to another, even when Citrix isn't in full mode, if I stop there and the continue "tabbing" it continues inside Citrix. I want to use windows key combination, but only in full screen mode. Does anyone have a solution to fix in another way?

• Windows Azure Recipe: Consumer Portal

  Nearly every company on the internet has a web presence. Many are merely using theirs for informational purposes. More sophisticated portals allow customers to register their contact information and provide some level of interaction or customer support. But as our understanding of how consumers use the web increases, the more progressive companies are taking advantage of social web and rich media delivery to connect at a deeper level with the consumers of their goods and services. Drivers Cost reduction Scalability Global distribution Time to market Solution Here’s a sketch of how a Windows Azure Consumer Portal might be built out: Ingredients Web Role – this will host the core of the solution. Each web role is a virtual machine hosting an application written in ASP.NET (or optionally php, or node.js). The number of web roles can be scaled up or down as needed to handle peak and non-peak traffic loads. Database – every modern web application needs to store data. SQL Azure databases look and act exactly like their on-premise siblings but are fault tolerant and have data redundancy built in. Access Control (optional) – if identity needs to be tracked within the solution, the access control service combined with the Windows Identity Foundation framework provides out-of-the-box support for several social media platforms including Windows LiveID, Google, Yahoo!, Facebook. It also has a provider model to allow integration with other platforms as well. Caching (optional) – for sites with high traffic with lots of read-only data and lists, the distributed in-memory caching service can be used to cache and serve up static data at higher scale and speed than direct database requests. It can also be used to manage user session state. Blob Storage (optional) – for sites that serve up unstructured data such as documents, video, audio, device drivers, and more. The data is highly available and stored redundantly across data centers. Each entry in blob storage is provided with it’s own unique URL for direct access by the browser. Content Delivery Network (CDN) (optional) – for sites that service users around the globe, the CDN is an extension to blob storage that, when enabled, will automatically cache frequently accessed blobs and static site content at edge data centers around the world. The data can be delivered statically or streamed in the case of rich media content. • SSH broken after homedir permissions and hostname change on EC2-hosted Ubuntu

  I changed my instance's hostname using the hostname utility and then set it in /etc/hostname so that the new name survives reboot. My main motivation was for differentiating between instances at the prompt using the \h format in PS1. EDIT I also changed permissions on my home directory. I made my home directory group writeable. Now I can no longer SSH into the machine. The short of it is the error Permission denied (publickey). Running ssh -v, the more verbose output is: debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering RSA public key: /Users/dmitry/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /Users/dmitry/.ssh/ec2key.pem debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: No more authentication methods to try. Permission denied (publickey). Should I have done something after changing the hostname? Now I can't get into the instance! :(

• sshd running but no PID file

  I'm recently started using monit to monitor the status of sshd on my CentOS 5.4 server. This works fine, but every so often monit reports that sshd is no longer running. This isn't true - I am still able to login to the server via ssh, however I note the following: There is no longer any PID file at /var/run/sshd.pid - after a reboot this file exists. Once it is gone, restarting sshd via service sshd restart does not create the PID file. sudo service sshd status reports openssh-daemon is stopped - again, restarting sshd does not change this, but a reboot does. sudo service sshd stop reports failed, presumably because of the missing PID file. Any idea what is going on? Update sudo netstat -lptun gives the following output relating to port 22 tcp 0 0 :::22 :::* LISTEN 20735/sshd Killing the process with this PID as suggested by @Henry and then starting sshd via service results in service sshd status recognising the process by PID again. Would still like to understand this better. RPM verify suggested by a couple of answerers shows this: sudo rpm -vV openssh openssh-server openssh-clients | grep 'S\.5' S.5....T c /etc/pam.d/sshd S.5....T c /etc/ssh/sshd_config /etc/pam.d/sshd has the following contents: #%PAM-1.0 auth include system-auth account required pam_nologin.so account include system-auth password include system-auth session optional pam_keyinit.so force revoke session include system-auth #session required pam_loginuid.so Should that last line be commented out? • Weird behaviour with OpenVPN: can not connect to a few websites

  My OpenVPN server is Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS and openvpn version is 2.x My client is on Win 7. He can access most sites but not Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, groups.google.com, etc My server.conf is: local x.x.x.x port 1194 proto udp dev tun ca /etc/openvpn/keys/ca.crt cert /etc/openvpn/keys/server.crt key /etc/openvpn/keys/server.key dh /etc/openvpn/keys/dh1024.pem server 10.8.0.0 255.255.255.0 push "redirect-gateway def1" push "dhcp-option DNS 8.8.8.8" client-to-client keepalive 10 120 comp-lzo persist-key persist-tun status /etc/openvpn/keys/openvpn-status.log verb 4 I can access Youtube etc using SSH Tunnel + SOCKS Proxy, and the Ubuntu server can access all sites. so nothing is wrong with the Ubuntu server. With little information I can provide, I am not looking for a quck solution. How can I debug?

• Android&ndash;Finding your SDK debug certificate MD5 fingerprint using Keytool

  I recently upgraded to a new development machine, which means the certificate used to sign my applications during debug changed. Under most circumstances you’ll never notice a difference, but if you’re developing apps using Google’s Maps API you’ll find that your old API key no longer works with the new certificate fingerprint. Google's instructions walk you through retrieving the MD5 fingerprint of your SDK debug certificate - the certificate that you’re probably signing your apps with before publishing, but it doesn't talk much about the Keytool command. The thing to remember is that Keytool is part of Java, not the Android SDK, so you'll never find it searching through your Android and Eclipse directories. Mine is located in C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_02\bin so you should find yours somewhere similar. From a command prompt, navigate to this directory and type: keytool -v -list -keystore "C:/Documents and Settings/<user name>/.android/debug.keystore" That’s assuming the path to your debug certificate is in the typical location. If this doesn’t work, you can find out where it’s located in Eclipse by clicking Window –> Preferences –> Android –> Build. There's no need to use the additional commands shown on Google's page. You'll be prompted for a password, just hit enter. The last line shown, Certificate fingerprint, is the key you'll give Google to generate your new Maps API key. Technorati Tags: Android Mapping

• Shibboleth + IIS and Pound Reverse Proxy

  Having a bit of a problem getting Shibboleth (SSO) working with ADFS and Pound. The main problem seems to be that: The website address will be https://website.domain.com Pound will then terminate the SSL and forward the traffic to the webserver on a different port (http://server.domain.com:8888) I have set up Shibboleth to protect the address http://server.domain.com:8888, which allows me to retrieve metadata and it all seems to be working fine. However the problem seems to be that ADFS is configured to protect the https website, so when Shibboleth attempts to recieve information from ADFS I get nothing except the following error: A token request was received for a relying party identified by the key 'https://msstagrevproxy.cwpintranet.com/shibboleth', but the request could not be fulfilled because the key does not identify any known relying party trust. Key: https://msstagrevproxy.cwpintranet.com/shibboleth I am not really sure how I can work around this as to retrieve the metadata from Shibboleth I have to use the https address but this does not actually exist in Shibboleth or IIS. Has anyone had any experience with this before or using any other SSO with a reverse proxy that works?

• Exadata X3, 11.2.3.2 and Oracle Platinum Services

  Oracle recently announced an Exadata Hardware Update. The overall architecture will remain the same, however some interesting hardware refreshes are done especially for the storage server (X3-2L). Each cell will now have 1600GB of flash, this means an X3-2 full rack will have 20.3 TB of total flash ! For all the details I would like to refer to the Oracle Exadata product page: www.oracle.com/exadata Together with the announcement of the X3 generation. A new Exadata release, 11.2.3.2 is made available. New Exadata systems will be shipped with this release and existing installations can be updated to that release. As always there is a storage cell patch and a patch for the compute node, which again needs to be applied using YUM. Instructions and requirements for patching existing Exadata compute nodes to 11.2.3.2 using YUM can be found in the patch README. Depending on the release you have installed on your compute nodes the README will direct you to a particular section in MOS note 1473002.1. MOS 1473002.1 should only be followed with the instructions from the 11.2.3.2 patch README. Like with 11.2.3.1.0 and 11.2.3.1.1 instructions are added to prepare your systems to use YUM for the first time in case you are still on release 11.2.2.4.2 and earlier. You will also find these One Time Setup instructions in MOS note 1473002.1 By default compute nodes that will be updated to 11.2.3.2.0 will have the UEK kernel. Before 11.2.3.2.0 the 'compatible kernel' was used for the compute nodes. For 11.2.3.2.0 customer will have the choice to replace the UEK kernel with the Exadata standard 'compatible kernel' which is also in the ULN 11.2.3.2 channel. Recommended is to use the kernel that is installed by default. One of the other great new things 11.2.3.2 brings is Writeback Flashcache (wbfc). By default wbfc is disabled after the upgrade to 11.2.3.2. Enable wbfc after patching on the storage servers of your test environment and see the improvements this brings for your applications. Writeback FlashCache can be enabled  by dropping the existing FlashCache, stopping the cellsrv process and changing the FlashCacheMode attribute of the cell. Of course stopping cellsrv can only be done in a controlled manner.   I realize arrow key remapping is an old problem, however I cannot seem to find a good solution that lets me select text with SHIFT + remapped keys as I would do with the vanilla arrow keys. For instance, if I remap Caps Lock to ISO_Level3_Shift and set xkb_symbols to read either key <AC08> { [ k, K , Down, Down] }; or key <AC08> { type="THREE_LEVEL", [ k, K , Down ] }; Pressing Shift+CapsLock+K will behave exactly as CapsLock+K (while Shift+Down behaves differently from Down alone). I had somewhat more success using higher level macro utilities and generating keyboard events (i.e. generate both the shift and the arrow keypresses); hoever that approach has a whole set of different problems - often the UI response to a simulated keypress is different from the "real" keypress, and there are performance problems as well - I can type faster than the thing can handle. Tl;dr; how can you shift-select using remapped arrow keys under X?

• Unity - Invert Movement Direction

  I am currently developing a 2,5D Sidescroller in Unity (just starting to get to know it). Right now I added a turn-script to have my character face the appropriate direction of movement, though something with the movement itself is behaving oddly now. When I press the right arrow key, the character moves and faces towards the right. If I press the left arrow key, the character faces towards the left, but "moon-walks" to the right. I allready had enough trouble getting the turning to work, so what I am trying is to find a simple solution, if possible without too much reworking of the rest of my project. I was thinking of just inverting the movement direction for a specific input-key/facing-direction. So if anyone knows how to do something like that, I'd be thankful for the help. • How do I add color syntax highlighting to GNU emacs?

  I have two versions of emacs available to me on a locked workstation: $ /usr/local/bin/emacs --version GNU Emacs 22.3.1 $ /usr/bin/emacs --version GNU Emacs 21.4.1 In both cases, my terminal type is xterm when I run either version of emacs. When I run the v21 version of emacs, I get syntax coloring for Perl, HTML, and other modes. When I run the v22 version, I do not get syntax coloring. I would like to migrate from the v21 version because the combination of v21 emacs, GNOME Terminal and GNU Screen is eating Ctrl-arrow key chords, which prevents me from moving quickly between words. (OS X Terminal and GNU Screen do not have this issue.) The v22 version allows use of Ctrl-arrow key combinations with GNOME Terminal and GNU Screen. How do I fix the v22 version (or ask my sys admin to fix) so that it once again highlights syntax and allows me to use Ctrl-arrow key combinations?

• OEM Office 2010 without media - how to reinstall?

  I have recently purchased a new office desktop PC from Dell with OEM version of Windows 7 Pro and Office 2010 Pro. One of the reasons I always use Dell is that they always supply installation media CDs or DVDs, unlike some other companies that just give you ISO images on the hard disk that you have to burn yourself. This is the first PC I have purchased with Office 2010 Pro (OEM), and I was disappointed to see that Dell don't ship out any installation media for office 2010, they just supply a piece of card with the office pro product key printed on it. If the HDD fails completely and I have to perform a clean installation, how can I re-install office? Can I download the trial version of Office 2010 and install that, then offer it my product key? Bearing in mind that the product key is an OEM product, not a retail product, would this work?

• Representing heightmaps, on disk and when drawing

  This is a conglomeration question when answering please specify which part you are addressing. I am looking at creating a maze type game that utilizes elevation. I have a few features I would like to have, but am unsure as to some of the implementation. I have done work doing fileIO maze generation (using a key to read the file, and then generate the level based on that file), but I am unsure how to think about this with elevation in the mix. I think height maps might be a good approach, but don't know how to represent them effectively. for a height map which is more beneficial XML(containing h[u,v] data and key definition), CSV (item1 is key reference, item2 is elevation), or another approach that I have not thought of yet? When it comes to placing the elevation values themselves what kind of deltah values are appropriate to have it noticeable at about a 60degree angle while not really effecting gravity driven physics (assuming some effect while moving up/down hill)? I am thinking of maybe going to procedural generation at some point, but am wondering if it is practical to have a procedurally generated grid (wall squares possibly same dimensions as the open space squares), or if designing to a thin wall open spaces is better? this decision will effect the amount of work need on the graphics end for uniform vs. irregular walls. EDIT: Game will be a elevation maze shooter. Levels/maps will be mazes with elevation the player has to negotiate. Elevations will have effects on "combat" vision, and movement.

• Slight delay when switching modes in vim using tmux or screen

  Switching to and from insert mode in Vim is no longer instantaneous since I use tmux. After pressing Esc in insert mode, it takes a noticeable amount of time to actually get out of insert mode. After pressing Esc and any other key afterwards the switch is immediate, and the command for the key pressed after Esc is executed. Any idea what might cause this? The Vim configuration is not the problem as the delay does not occur when I run Vim outside tmux, so this is probably related to tmux somehow. I use gnome-terminal btw. Also worth noting, it seems I can not define key bindings in tmux for Esc, my plan was to bind Esc to: bind Escape send-keys ^[ Alas, it seems binding anything to Esc for tmux does not work. The same problem occurs in screen as well.

  Hi All, I'm trying to setup SSL on fedora with apache. In my vhost... SSLCertificateFile /your/path/to/crt.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /your/path/to/key.key SSLCertificateChainFile /your/path/to/DigiCertCA.crt I had it working fine with a self signed key, but can't get it to work with the DigiCertCA crt. When I run service httpd restart It fails to start. This is what I get in the logs...   How do you enable ssh login on OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) for a user with an empty password? I've seen others asking this question, and like me it's for the same reason: a parent who can't deal with passwords. So "set a password" is not an option. I found references to adding "nullok" to various PAM config files. Didn't work. Found sshd config "PermitEmptyPasswords yes". Didn't work. • Simulate analogue steering wheel input from third party software like xPadder

  So. I currently have a steering wheel connected to my htpc. Since it wont work / get recognized by all games i play. I use xpadder to play for example Grid 3. As far as i have understood, it simply presses the associated arrow key when i turn the wheel. What i would like, is a software to simulate more and more frequent key presses of the arrow keys the more i turn the wheel. Example: Tilting a little - 100 presses / second Tilting more - 200 presses / second Tilting max - Hold down key Because what i currently do with the wheel is constantly shaking it a bit right, when i just want to turn a little bit right and so on.
