  • Router stopping my python server

    This was originally posted in stackoverflow.com but it was suggested I move it here after it was realized it wasn't my code that was wrong. So my problem, very simply, is that I cannot get my computers that are connected to my router to communicate. example: If I ping a wireless computer I get no responce and the Request times out If I ping a computer wired to the modem directly it works fine.   • Hard Disk:S.M.A.R.T. Stas BAD, Back up and replace

    I have an laptop top hard drive I was trying to use to my new media computer. The case is small and can accommodate for 2 2.5" drives, no 3.5" drives. I had been using the hard drive as storage hard drive until now. When I go to install Windows on the hard drive first I'm prompted at the bios of: Hard Disk:S.M.A.R.T. Stas BAD, Back up and replace. And then again in the Windows Setup, informing me that the hard drive is bad. So I did a full format of the drive and tried again. Same error. So I took it out and hooked it back up to my other computer via an Sata usb adapter kit (maybe the cause?). The hard drive is recognized fine and when I scanned it for errors by going: right click -> properties -> tools -> error checking It returns that the hard drive is fine. I have tried 3 different SATA cables and multiple jumpers. When I plugged in my 1.5 tb 3.5" drive the computer that gives me the S.M.A.R.T. error on the 2.5" drive, recognizes it with no problems. Any ideas on why this is happening and how I can fix it?

    MBP 6,2 :: Google Chrome 13.0.782.32 beta :: Adobe Flash Player 10,3,181,26 UPDATE: only Youtube is affected. Vimeo, other flash, etc. all works great. Hello. I recently had to hard reboot my MBP. After that, I could not watch Youtube videos or (I believe) other flash enabled content. The videos appear transparent, as if there were a "hole" in my browser (Chrome) such that I could see through the hole and see my desktop.   • local cache for NAS or network folder

    I am planning to build a network attached storage (NAS) server. Is there a way to cache frequently acccessed files from the remote storage automatically on the local PC? (I am not looking for a way to sync whole folders like rsync, but rather something that automatically and transparently caches the last accessed 50 gb of files.) Ideally I am searching for something that caches writes as well as reads, since only one pc will be accessing the server (and one day of lost changes if the local cache is damaged would be acceptable) I looked into windows offline files, but as far as I could tell this requires manual interaction to disconnect the server or go into offline mode in order to use the cache. The server would probably be running Linux or freeNAS, the pc runs Windows xp, but could be upgraded to 7 if required.

  • Can NetMeeting run on Windows 7?

    Microsoft discontinued NetMeeting a while ago and it is no longer included in Vista or Windows 7. I have read that there is a hotfix to get it working on Vista, but is there such a thing for Windows 7? I know there are alternatives available, but I was wondering if anyone has managed to it working on Windows 7? I am just interested in running the client component of NetMeeting, to connect to a meeting hosted on an XP machine.

  • Convert a Linksys WAG54GP2 ADSL router into Access point only to extend my Wifi range

    I have a wireless lan running on my ASDL2 connection. The router (Seimens Gigaset sx763) is provided by the ISP and is generally good. However I have couple of dead spots at the far end of the house and since I have my old router sitting in the drawer I thought that I'd try to convert it into simple WAP. However downloading the manual from linksys it seems to be that the manual is from an earlier firmware, but the very first option on the very first page seems promising: Wan Mode: Router or ADSL However after this I'm a bit lost. I know that the wireless card on this box will need a mac address and it must get its address from the master router (I thought static might be best). However the again the manual is out of date I have the option of DHCP: ON or OFF or RELAY I've not even got to the more complex options yet. Question is can this device even work this way (seems like it but I cannot find any docs on it), and if so how? Edit: Having now fiddled around I'm of the opinion that this cannot be done.

  • Printing to a Windows 7 incompatible printer shared on supported Windows XP machine

    I have an HP Laserjet 1500 that is supported by Windows XP, but not supported by Windows-7. I want to print from my 7 machine(s) to my XP machine on this printer. Is there some sort of way to send a generic job (like sending raw postscript or something) to the XP machine, which will then print it with the proper drivers? Is there a virtual printer that has drivers for both XP and 7 that will just re-print it on the XP machine using the real printer?

  • Several "SideBySide" errors in the event viewer (Windows XP SP3)

    Hi all, For some reason, my netbook continuously comes up with SideBySide errors in the event viewer under Computer Management. Is there some way to get rid of these errors? My netbook occasionally BSODs and looking back into the event viewer after, at least 8 SideBySide errors were logged prior to BSOD. Please help! Thanks in advance. Netbook is a Samsung N120 with upgraded RAM to 2 GB. EDIT: So, SideBySide errors have been resolved and apparently the BSOD isn't related. But I remember specifically, that last time I had a BSOD, it was due to an "unknown hard error." What causes that?

    I'm now using three monitors with resolution capability of 1920x1080. The one monitor connected to Active Display Port is (from some reason) limited to 1440x900. I have a dedicated video card connnected, so it can't be stealing RAM to use for the GPU (the S5000XVN does not have any onboard video). I am running Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 as the primary OS - so there should not be a memory limitation imposed on me from the OS. Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas on how I can actually use all 16GB of RAM? I plan on using this machine to use for a Hyper-V server and have x2 Quad Core Xeon CPUs on the way as I write this post.

    I love the Chrome browser but I use XML quite a lot in my development work and when I view it in Chrome I just get the rendered text. I know that the source view is slightly better but I'd really like to see the layout and functionality that IE adds to XML namely: Highlighting Open/close nodes Any ideas how I can get this on Chrome?     I have 5 hard drives in a machine sitting in a cupboard. /dev/sda is a 500GB Seagate drive, and is the boot disk. /dev/sd{b,c,d,e} are 2TB drives in a raid6 configuration. smartctl is showing significantly higher temperatures (like ~140 degrees celsius) on the raid drives than the boot drive.     I've simply been amazed by the quality and speed of Onlive, as this technology has the potential of making hardware requirements irrelevant to the average user. However, at the moment Onlive is only for remotely controlling video games, and not desktops or other devices in general. I'm in pursuit of software or services that can accomplish this as well as Onlive does. I need: viewer (client) program portability (able to run on a USB stick) DirectX, OpenGL / full-screen game compatibility on the server side.** Gaming-acceptable color/scaling quality and responsiveness. I have a very powerful desktop at home and I want to be able to access this raw power from any other computer that I stick my USB into (in the same way Onlive gives gamers use of their powerful servers) What software/services has most of the above?   • Can't enable apache mod on emerge

    I want to add mod_proxy and mod_proxy_http to Apache server on my Gentoo, but apparently some file with high priority on the system is disabling the mods and preventing me to install. I am currently editing /usr/portage/profiles/base/make.defaults file, but it gets updated (and changes lost) every time I update the system. I have to edit it every time I update the system/reinstall Apache. Besides that, I have already added dependencies to the /etc/portage/package.use file: www-servers/apache proxy proxy_http What other files do I have do change or should check flags so I can enable proxy and do not have to edit files again every time?

  • Can't Get Mac Mini to turn on - no screen, no beep, only the fan, power light, and optical drive noi

    I have an Intel-based Mac mini mid-2007 (Model A1176). This is the computer my kids use so I don't use it regularly. The computer had been working fine until one day my kids told me that it no longer works. The computer will not boot up. When I turn it on the fan turns, the white power light in the front turns on, and there is a sound that appears to be from the optical drive (rather than hard drive). I don't get anything to the monitor, nor do I get any dings or other start up sounds from the computer. Here is what I've tried thus far to no avail: 1) Swapped out the monitors early on since I figured that was my weak link - no change 2) Reset the PMU - no change 3) Tried to boot up from the System Disk - The mini loaded the dvd into the drive, but nothing else (I can't eject the disk so I can put it back) 3) Start up the computer in target mode connected to another mac - I tried this too, but I never received a chime or the disk show up on the other mac. I'm about out of ideas apart from scraping the computer. Does anyone have any ideas that I can try? Again, nothing has been done to the computer in at least 6 months when I upgraded the RAM. I'm also still on Leopard. Thanks.

  • Windows xp mapped drives disconnect from Windows 7 on Peer to Peer network

    I have a 5 user peer to peer network. 2-XP machines, 3- Windows 7 machines and a Windows 7 machine acting as the file server. I have NO issues with the Windows 7 machines staying connected via the mapped drives to the "server". However, once a day the 2 XP machines will not connect to the Windows 7 machine "server" via the mapped drives. I must restart the "server" in order to see the server and access the files via the mapped drives or Explorer. I have tried the persistent : yes command in NET USE, on the XP machines and also setting a static IP address on the "server". I've turned the firewall off on the "server:, no difference so I turned the firewall back on. No interruption occurs with the internet when this happens, just can't see the server. Again, the Windows 7 users are unaffected. I have gone into the advanced network settings on the "server" and added read/write permissions for Everyone as well as the users of the XP machines. I have double checked that we are all on the same WORKGROUP. I'm at a loss. It seems to happen around mid-day and I've not been able to find any activity that is happening at this time (Like someone plugging in a thumbdrive). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as my client is running old XP software he no longer has the disks for and needs for his engineering firm.

    I have a mercurial repository on a secure server, to which I want to grant secure access to an external user. I added for him a user account and publickey ssh authentication so that now he could push/pull changesets via ssh. My question is: how can I make this new user account completely disabled from doing anything or accessing any data on the server other than accessing the repository? E.g. he shouldn't even have the possibility to enter an interactive shell session. Thanks

  • Automatically save/download e-mail body to disk

    Is there a program that will allow me to connect to my mail server (IMAP) and automatically save certain new e-mails to disk? Multiple times a day I receive automated e-mail updates about pending jobs from a system that processes some information for us. The data in these e-mails is written as plain-text within the body of the message. I would like to download the newest message, parse it, and display it on my desktop. The last two parts I can manage ok - it's just the automatic downloading that is posing a challenge. I don't use Outlook (I do use Thunderbird), but would prefer not to have the client open to make this happen. I'm currently running Win7.

  • Prevent gnome from automatically mounting partition when clicked in nautilus

    Hi, I have two partitions on a hard drive in my machine that are formatted as ntfs, but must under no circumstance be mounted by my Ubuntu installation (unless I do some preparation first). However nautilus happily displays the partitions, and a single click will mount them automatically. This is very dangerous behaviour, how can I hide the partitions from nautilus and prevent accidentally mounting them by a single stray mouse click? Thanks

Ideally the speech should be indistinguishable from a native American or English speaker. I'm looking for products with SDK or API that I can easily hook into. Just to clarify and iterate on my question - I'm not looking for things like Microsoft's free text-to-speech synthesis program, I'm looking for a high quality professional product.
