• On REST: WADL or not IDL, is the following approach right ?

  This question is a bit long, please bear with me. In REST, i think we should not need WADL or any IDL. But rather something that would implicitly cover its concept. The way I think about it is when we (humans) surf the Web, when we go to a web site for the first time, we don't know what services it provides. You discover those on the html home page (or a sitemap page in a help section) or maybe just the main menu on the home page. If you make an analogy, the homepage or site map to us humans is what WSDL is to WS-* or what WADL could be to a REST service. Only that its just like any other html content. I think that in REST the following is a good way to do things, respecting the HATEOS paradigm. Have a top level (or default) resource that lists links to your other resources. For a library example, say RestLibrary.com/ it could be something like: <root xmlns:lib="http://librarystandards.com/libraryml"> <resource class="lib:book"> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" template="mylib.com/book/{isbn}" /> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" rel="add" href="mylib.com/book" method="POST" /> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" rel="update" template="mylib.com/book/{isbn}" method="PUT" /> </resource> <resource class="lib:bookList"> <link template="mylib.com/book?keywords={keywords}" type="application/vnd.openlibrary+xml" rel="search" /> </resource> </root> Note that it is assumed that the media type "application/vnd.libraryml+xml" is a defined standard or (may be just proprietary vocabulary) named libraryml. Also, the client should be able to understand this "homepage" resource (elements root, resource and link). This is the part that could be used instead of WADL : an Abstract vocabulary that should be understandable by any client. You could use an existing standard like Atom for example. But the main idea is to have an abstract vocabulary understandable by any client. Why not WADL then ? well wadl is only for service discovery. The idea here is to have an light abstract vocabulary that would serve as a base for hypermedia. A "root" vocabulary. Like in owl we have owl:thing...etc Now if the client knows the "libraryml" standard it can follow the links to the things it understands (after parsing the media type properties and xmlns). If not, it just won't. When i can't understand how to deal with something in REST architecture i tend to see how we Humans do it in the Web. In the Web, we have the Generic language that is HTML that enables site builders to deliver any specific content, regardless of its meaning to the client (the user), Browsers understand HTML but not the "meaning" of its content. It is the user that understands the (domain specific) content. If i go to say QuantumPhysics.org, my browser can render the home page (it is just html after all) and i can read the home page. If i understand quantum then fine i can continue browsing. If i don't i just get out (unless i want to learn the hardway :) ) In the RetsLibrary.com example the client app is just like me+my browser on QuantumPhysics.org. the media type "application/vnd.libraryml+xml" is quantum physics (knowledge). http is http in both examples. Now HTML of QuantumPhysics.org is in RestLibrary.com is XML + that tiny little abstract vocabulary (root resource and link, that you could replace with something like Atom). So does this approach have any value ? don't we need a root tiny hyper-vocabulary so we can succeed with hypermedia and the "initial URI" concept ? edit Yeah why not RDF as the root vocabulary !

  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.sqlclient.sqlparametercollection.addwithvalue.aspx I'm used to adding sql parameters to a sqlCommand using the add() function. This allows me to specify the type of the sqlParameter, but it requires another line to set the value. It's nice to use the AddWithValue function, but it skips the "specify the parameter type" step. I'm guessing this causes the parameters to be sent over as strings contained within single quotes (''), but I'm not sure. Is this the case, and does this cause significantly slower performance of the stored procedures? Note: I understand that it is nice to validate user data on the .NET side of things by specifying the data type for params -- I'm only concerned about reflection-type overhead of AddWithValue either on the .NET or SQL side.

• Getting TypeConverter error that makes no sense

  I have a TypeConverter for a TopMostNode class. It extends ExpandableObjectConverter. The TopMostNode has two properties. Setting those in the property grid results in correctly serialized code to the designer. However, if I type in text for the property, I get a "Property value is not valid" error and the details say: Object of type 'TopMostNode' cannot be converted to type 'TopMostNode'. I'm baffled. When I step through the type converter ConvertFrom code, it runs as expected. I don't even know were to start looking for an issue like this.

  Hello, I am having an incredibly difficult time to decorate a Zend form the way I need to. This is the HTML structure I am in need of: <table> <thead><tr><th>one</th><th>two</th><th>three</th><th>four</th></thead> <tbody> <tr> <td><input type='checkbox' id='something'/></td> <td><img src='src'/></td> <td><input type='text' id='something'/></td> <td><input type='radio' group='justonegroup'/></td> </tr> <tr> <td><input type='checkbox' id='something'/></td> <td><img src='src'/></td> <td><input type='text' id='something'/></td> <td><input type='radio' group='justonegroup'/></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> The number of rows in the body is determined by my looping structure inside my form class. All ids will be unique of course. All radio buttons in the form belongs to one group. My issue really is that I am unsure how to create and then style the object Zend_Form_Element_MultiCheckbox and Zend_Form_Element_Radio inside my table. Where/how would I apply the appropriate decoraters to the checkboxes and radio buttons to have a form structure like above?   I am currently trying to pass a generated JSON string to dojo for parsing and am having some issues. The servlet simply writes it as a string as so: response.getWriter().append("{ \"data\": {"); response.getWriter().append("\"type\": \"facing\","); response.getWriter().append("\"score\": " + "\"" + score + "\","); response.getWriter().append("\"count\":" + "\"" + count + "\"" ); response.getWriter().append("}}"); which prints as: {"data":{"type":"facing","score":"10","count":"24"}} And the parsing on the dojo end looks as so: dojo.xhrPost({ url: url, handleAs: "json", load: function(data) { alert(data); /* Parse Not working */ alert(data.data[0].type); }, error: function(error) { alert("No dice") } }); The main issue is the data.data[0].type is returning nothing but when i print this out as text the json seems to be correctly formatted. Any help with this would be appreciated.

  Alright, so as you probably know, static inheritance is impossible in C#. I understand that, however I'm stuck with the development of my program. I will try to make it as simple as possible. Lets say our code needs to manage objects that are presenting aircrafts in some airport. The requirements are as follows: There are members and methods that are shared for all aircrafts There are many types of aircrafts, each type may have its own extra methods and members. There can be many instances for each aircraft type. Every aircraft type must have a friendly name for this type, and more details about this type. For example a class named F16 will have a static member FriendlyName with the value of "Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon". Other programmers should be able to add more aircrafts, although they must be enforced to create the same static details about the types of the aircrafts. In some GUI, there should be a way to let the user see the list of available types (with the details such as FriendlyName) and add or remove instances of the aircrafts, saved, lets say, to some XML file. So, basically, if I could enforce inherited classes to implement static members and methods, I would enforce the aircraft types to have static members such as FriendlyName. Sadly I cannot do that. So, what would be the best design for this scenario?

  The application has many different windows. One is a single 'row' window, which relates to a single row of data in a table, say 'Order'. Another is a 'multiple row' datawindow, where each row in the datawindow relates to a row in 'Order', used for spreadsheet-like data entry Functionality extentions have create a detail table, say 'Suppliers', where an order may require multiple suppliers to fill the order. Normally, suppliers are not required, because they are already in the warehouse (0), or there may need to be an order to a supplier to complete an order (1), or multiple suppliers may need to be contacted (more than one). As a single order is entered, once the items are entered, a User Object is populated depending on the status of the items in the warehouse. If required, this creates a 1-to-many relationship between the order and the "backorder". In the PB side, there is a single object uo_backorder which is created on the window, and is referenced by the window depending on the command (button popup, save, etc) I have been tasked to create the 'backorder' functionality on the spreadsheet-line window. Previously the default options for backorders were used when orders were created from the multiple-row window. A workaround already exists where unconfirmed orders could be opened in the single-row window, and the backorder information manipulated there. However, the userbase wants this functionality on the one window. Since the functionality of uo_backorder already exists, I assumed I could just copy the code from the single-order window, but create an array of uo_backorder objects to cope with multiple rows. It is associating the visual object placed on the face of the main window to each array cell, so anytime I reference the array cell object it's actually referencing the one original object, not the new instances that I (thought) I was creating. If I change the code iuo_backorders[ll_count+1] = create uo_backorder the code doesn't run, saying that it failed to initalize the popup window. I think this is related to the class being called the same thing as the instance. What I want to end up with is an array of uo_backorder objects that I can associate to each row of my datawindow (first row = first cell, etc). I think the issue lays in the fact it's a visual object, and I can't seem to get the window to run without adding a dummy object on the face of the window (functionality from the original single-row window). Since it's a VISUAL object, does the object indeed need to be embedded on the windowface for the window to know what object I'm talking about? If so, how does one create multiple windowface objects (one to many, depending on when a row is added)? Don't hesitate to inquire regarding any more information this issue may require from myself. I have no idea what is 'standard' or 'default' in PB, or what is custom and needs more explaining.

  With the code below i get a CA2104 (DoNotDeclareReadOnlyMutableReferenceTypes) warning public readonly ReadOnlyCollection<char> IllegalChars; with part of the error message change the field to one that is an immutable reference type. If the reference type 'ReadOnlyCollection' is, in fact, immutable, exclude this message. I am sure ReadOnlyCollection is immutable but my question is is there a type can i use to not have this message appear?

• Vim is spellchecking in XML files where I don't want it to, and only there

  I'm trying to use Vim's builtin spellchecking in some XML documents. This happens merely by having the XML syntax loaded, as seen in the following minimalistic example (which reproduces what I also see in large XML documents): Note that given two buffers with exactly the same content, when Filetype is text, the spellchecking works; when it is xml, it does not. spell is set in both buffers. However, given this view of the top three lines of a large XML document, you can see that the spellchecking is certainly on: but it is only checking attributes. The nuisance is that none of the things it is actually finding are mispelled, and it isn't finding any of the numerous misspellings in the document. I would like it at a minimum to find the spelling errors in the body of the document, and being able to turn off the checking on attributes would be a nice option. I've searched for @NoSpell in the xml.vim file, but that returns no hits.

• firefox, jQuery ajax calls firing twice and never triggering success or error functions

  Hi, I am developing with the .NET framework, using jQuery 1.4.2 client side. When developing in Firefox version 3.6, every so often an one of the many ajax calls I make on the page will fire twice, the second will return successfully but will not trigger the success handler of the ajax call and the first never returns anything. So basically the data is all sent to the server and response is sent down but nothing happens with the response. Here is an example of the call I am making.   Hi, I have registered an enumeration type "ClefType" within my header file - this enum is registered with the MetaObject system using the Q_DECLARE_METATYPE and Q_ENUMS macros. qRegisterMetaType is also called in the class constructor. This allows me to use this type in a Q_PROPERTY, this all works fine. However, later on, I need to be able to get hold of the Q_PROPERTY of this enum type, given the object - in a form that is suitable for serialization.   Hello, We are currently programming a game (its a pretty unknown language: modula 2), And the problem we encountered is the following: we have a maze (not a perfect maze) in a 17 x 12 grid. The computer has to generate a way from the starting point (9, 12) to the end point (9, 1). I found some algorithms but they dont work when the robot has to go back: xxxxx x => x x xxx or: xxxxx x xxxxxx x x x x x xxxxxx x => x xxxxxxxxx I found a solution for the first example type but then the second type couldn't be solved and the solution I made up for the second type would cause the robot to get stuck in the first type of situation. It's a lot of code so i'll give the idea: WHILE (end destination not reached) DO { try to go right, if nothing blocks you: go right if you encounter a block, try up until you can go right, if you cant go up anymore try going down until you can go right, (starting from the place you first were blocked), if you cant go down anymore, try one step left and fill the spaces you tested with blocks. } This works for the first type of problem ... not for the second one. Now it could be that i started wrong so i am open for better algorithms or solutions specificaly to how i could improve my algorithm. Thanks a lot!!

• sIFR displays only the first line of text in Opera when on transparent background

  I have implemented sIFR for the first time, on a test page. The code I have is below. It works fine in IE7, Firefox, Safari and Chrome, but in Opera only the first line of sIFR-ed text appears when the page first loads and after refreshing the page. But, if I scroll the page, all the text appears! It seems to have to do with transparency, because if I turn transparency off, it works fine. Please can someone help me to make this work?
