  I've found recently that for some types of financial calculations that the following pattern is much easier to follow and test especially in situations where we may need to get numbers from various stages of the computation. public class nonsensical_calculator { ... double _rate; int _term; int _days; double monthlyRate { get { return _rate / 12; }} public double days { get { return (1 - i); }} double ar { get { return (1+ days) /(monthlyRate * days) double bleh { get { return Math.Pow(ar - days, _term) public double raar { get { return bleh * ar/2 * ar / days; }} .... } Obviously this often results in multiple calls to the same accessor within a given formula. I was curious as to whether or not the compiler is smart enough to optimize away these repeated calls with no intervening change in state, or whether this style is causing a decent performance hit.   Okay, I have been looking into MVVM pattern, and each time I have previously tried looking into it, I gave up for a number of reasons: Unnecessary Extra Long Winded Coding No apparent advantages for coders (no designers in my office. Currently only myself soon to be another coder) Not a lot of resources/documentation of good practices! (Or at least hard to find) Cannot think of a single scenario where this is advantageous. I'm about to give up on it yet again, and thought I'd ask to see if someone answer the reasons above. I honestly can't see an advantage of using this for a single/partner coding. Even in complex projects with 10's of windows. To me the DataSet is a good enough view and binding like in the answer by Brent following question

• How reusable should ViewModel classes be?

  I'm working on a WPF application, and I'm structuring it using the MVVM pattern. Initially I had an idea that the ViewModels should be reusable, but now I'm not too sure anymore. Should I be able to reuse my ViewModels if I need similar functionality for a WinForms application? Silverlight doesn't support all things WPF does - should I be able to reuse for Silverlight applications? What if I want to make a Linux GUI for my application. Then I need the ViewModel to build in Mono - is this something I should strive for? And so on.. So; should one write ViewModel classes with one specific View in mind, or think of reusability?

• How do I remove those rotation artefacts from my CATiledLayer?

  Hello all, I have a CATiledLayer into which I render content in the following method - (void)drawLayer:(CALayer *)layer inContext:(CGContextRef)ctx I used the QuartzDemo code to draw a pattern. This works very well until I apply a rotation transform to the layer's parentLayer (a UIView): rotated: These zigzag artefacts become worse when I start drawing lines and texts into the CATiledLayer. I applied the transform as follows (I also tried using an affine transform on the view itself): self.containerView.layer.transform = CATransform3DMakeRotation(angleRadians, 0.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f); I transform the containerView rather than the layer itself, as I have several layers in that view that I would like to rotate at the same time without changing the relative positions. I did not have problems when rotating UIImageViews in the past. Is there a way that I can rotate the CATiledLayer without these problems? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Yours, Felix

• emacs23 pops up debugger way too frequently

  Since I've upgraded to Ubuntu lucid and emacs23, Emacs pops up the debugger in situations, where emacs22 does not. For example, when hitting C-c C-c in org-mode, emacs22 simply states can do nothing useful at this location, whereas in emacs23 the debugger shows up. Debugger entered--Lisp error: (error "C-c C-c can do nothing useful at this location") signal(error ("C-c C-c can do nothing useful at this location")) error("C-c C-c can do nothing useful at this location") org-ctrl-c-ctrl-c(nil) call-interactively(org-ctrl-c-ctrl-c nil nil) That only illustrates the pattern -- the behavior is not limited to org-mode. Occurring every 3 minutes, it really annoys me. How can I prevent it? I've already tried to stop this using debug-on-error and stack-trace-on-error: it didn't work.

• Javascript regex only matching entire url as typing

  I'm trying to use javascript to find all URLs in a textarea as the person is typing (onkeyup). The problem that I'm having is in finding a regex to match the entire URL, I need it only to match all the URL's in the text area that are complete URLs. All of the existing regex expressions that I find through Google and through my own experiementing seem to match as soon as the user has typed the first part of the pattern. So, for example, if I'm typing and then start to type http://w, all of a sudden, it will match. I need to find a regex that will match and return an array of all the urls that are in the textarea, while also not matching unless the person has completed typing the full URL. • Easiest way to retrofit retry logic on LINQ to SQL migration to SQL Azure

  I have a couple of existing ASP .NET web forms and MVC applications that currently use LINQ to SQL with a SQL Server 2008 Express database on a Windows VPS: one VPS for both IIS and SQL. I am starting to outgrow the VPS's ability to effectively host both SQL and IIS and am getting ready to split them up. I am considering migrating the database to SQL Azure and keeping IIS on the VPS. After doing initial research it sounds like implementing retry logic in the data access layer is a must-do when adopting SQL Azure. I suspect this is even more critical to implement in my situation where IIS will be on a VPS outside of the Azure infrastructure. I am looking for pointers on how to do this with the least effort and impact on my existing code base. Is there a good retry pattern that can be applied once at the LINQ to SQL data access layer, as opposed to having to wrap all of my LINQ to SQL operations in try/catch/wait/retry logic?

But as there pointed out The current design of EntLib’s Validation Application Block uses the Composite pattern; that is, when we ask for validation for an object, it returns back a single validator object that contains a list of all the validation work to be done. While this is very convenient from a normal usage scenario, the unfortunate side-effect is that we can’t “peek inside” to see what the individual validations are that it’s doing, and therefore can’t generate the appropriate client-side validation hints. So how is it possible to implement client side validation for EntLib? Is there work around?

  Where can I find some good pointers on best practices for running ASP.NET MVC on IIS6? I haven't seen any realistic options for web-hosts who provide IIS7-hosting yet. Mostly because I don't live in the U.S. So I was wondering on how you best build applications in ASP.NET MVC and make it easily available to deploy on both IIS6 and IIS7. Keep in mind that this is for standard web-hosts, so there is no access to ISAPI-filters or special settings inside IIS6. Are there anything else one should think about when developing ASP.NET MVC-applications to target IIS6? Any functions that doesn't work? UPDATE: One of the bigger issues is the thing with routes. The pattern {controller}/{action} will work on IIS7, but not IIS6 which needs {controller}.mvc/{action}. So how do I make this transparent? Again, no ISAPI and no IIS-settings, please.

  Hi I have an XML column in my table which contains this xsd snippet: <xsd:element name="Postcode" minOccurs="0"> <xsd:simpleType> <xsd:restriction base="xsd:string"> <xsd:pattern value="^[0-9]{4}$" /> </xsd:restriction> </xsd:simpleType> </xsd:element> The regular expression should require a string containing 4 numerical digits. It validates perfectly in Visual Studio and is a correct regular expression. SQL Server, on the other hand, won't accept it. The error message I receive is: XML Validation: Invalid simple type value: '1234'. Location: / * : Donor[1]/*:Postcode[1]. I have an email address regex working fine, but can't get this simple numerical regex to work.

  With .NET, I have "Thursday, April 10, 2008 1:30:00 PM" and I want "dddd, dd MMMM, yyyy h:m:s t", "6:09:01 PM" and want ""hh:mm:ss tt", "Fri 29 Aug" and want "ddd d MMM", and so on. It seems I should be able to use DateTimeFormatInfo in some way. I figured I can format the date with each pattern returned by GetAllDateTimePatterns, and when the original date string and the formated date string match then I have the format. Yet, I want to generate custom formats, not the standard formats. I want the format string. I do not want the date. I have both the DateTime value and the formatted string value for the date. I need <formatString> as in ToString(<formatString>).

  I am familiar with MVC/MVP though my question is simple, I'm about to program a simple Instant Messaging software when the engine and communication part is an open API. so my software will have about 3 forms, a splash screen with login details, the options form and a main form with all the functionality like: Friends List, Send message, Received messages (tabbed), search user, etc. In UI perspective, its important for the GUI to be in 1 form in my application. So my question is, for the only complicated form that I'm going to have, is it necessary to implement an MVP design pattern or in this case its better to just go straight forward and put all the logic in 1 place? And as a read/write test, to me it looks a bit pointless to read the same integer over and over (if I understand well what's going on in the Stream Read/Write) Wouldn't it be better to read int's from the previously written file and just read and write ints on the same place? Is there a better way to illustrate it? I've been breaking my head about a lot of these things for a while and I just can't get the whole picture..

  Hi all, I am creating a Recurrence pattern in calendar items. But there is a issue as before clicking "Save and Send Invitations" button of Lotus notes 8.5, i am able to view the "RepeatForUnit" field from document property and based on its value i am identifying the Recurrence type like (D: for daily, W: for Weekly, M: for monthly etc). But, After clicking on the "Save and Send Invitations" button, the Recurrence is getting saved but after that, i am unable to get the "RepeatForUnit" field in Document Properties. Kindly help me, how to identify the Recurrence type and the related fields. Note: I am using Domino.dll using C#.

My director has recommended a design pattern where I include the calculations directly in the flash object, but that doesn't seem like it's very good OOP.   I have defined an Event class: Event and all the following classes inherit from Event: AEvent BEvent CEvent DEvent Now, with the info I gather from all these Event classes, I will make a chart. With AEvent and BEvent, I will generate points for that chart, while with CEvent and DEvent I will paint certain regions of the chart. Now, how should I signal this in my class hierarchy? Should I make AEvent and BEvent inherit from PointEvent while CEvent and DEvent inherit from RegionEvent, being that both RegionEvent and PointEvent inherit from Event? Should I add a field with an Enum to Event with 2 values, Point and Region, and each of the child classes set their value to it? Should I use some kind of pattern here? Which one? Thanks.

  How do I view directories that begin with dot and how do I browse application directories in Netbeans? I can't seem to view directories that begin with a "dot" through the open file dialog in Netbeans. Similarly, I can't browse any application directory e.g. File-Open File-"someapp.app". Attempting to browse "someapp.app" gives the error "someapp.app is a directory". Altering or removing the regex under Preferences-Miscellaneous-File-Ignored Files Pattern has no effect; directories that begin with dot stay invisible. I'm on OSX 10.5.8 and I've tried to get this working on netbeans 6.5-6.8 to no avail. I posted this to the on the netbeans irc and mailing list but haven't heard anything back. Any help would be appreciated!

  I am evaluating SubSonic for use in Phase 2 of a large project. This is an ASP.NET project, with 700 tables in a SQL Server database. We are planning for our domain model to consist of POCO classes to assist with an offline access requirements we have. I believe that the SimpleRepository pattern would be among my best options. Since I have a database already, however, the migration assistance doesn't help me. Are there T4 templates for SimpleRepository that I just overlooked? How do I 'turn off' migration? If I missed something in the Wiki, point me there, otherwise get me started and I'll write up a Wiki entry for y'all when we get there.

  I have two customers that have the same workflow (Create file -transport file - wait for response - send response to internal team); however the implementation of each step is different for each customer. For example, one customer requires a flat file to be sent via SFTP, while the other customer requires an XML file to be sent via FTP. I'd like to create a sequential workflow, using Microsoft Workflow Foundation (WF) and reuse this workflow for multiple vendors. Each action's call to an external module can use the same interface, but a different concrete implementation. However, I'm unfamiliar with WF and I'm not sure how to implement this. Can someone point me to the proper way to use this pattern? Will it make a difference whether I choose WF 3.5 or WF 4.0? Thank you.

I have been building an application (VB/WPF) following Josh Smith's example of an MVVM pattern: Click here to view My Views have Controls which trigger a Command upon an event, such as a button click and these are bound to properties in the ViewModel. My ViewModel exposes properties of type ICommand which invoke the appropriate methods. This has worked well, until now! I now want to use a Thumb Control to allow a user to move an object within a Canvas. I don't believe that the Thumb has a Command capability 'out of the box'. A Thumb raises a 'DragDelta' event when being moved. So my question is as follows: How do I extend a Control's capability to issue a Command upon an event please? I wish to issue a new Command, let's say 'onDragDelta' so that I can bind it to a property in my ViewModel just like my Buttons. Thank you very much

• Routing classic asp through an MVC application

  We are starting to convert a large classic asp application into MVC (using C#). An additional requirement is, that all classic routes get "translated" to MVC ones ('mydomain.com/productdetail.asp?id=13' should become 'mydomain.com/products/13') even before we start writing the first controller or view. So basically, we want to use the routing from MVC but have the classic asp handle the response. An these are my questions: How to use the new nice urls but have the classic asp handle the construction of the html result? Within the classic asp page, the new MVC url pattern should be used for links. What is the best way of translating the old urls to the new ones and make the accessible within the classic asp site (using COM I guess). When an old/classic url is requested, how would I correctly handle that request so that browsers/searchengines would understand that the page has moved to the new url? Thanks in advance!

• Separation of concerns and authentication

  I'm trying to be a Good Developer and separate my concerns out. I've got an ASP.NET MVC project with all my web code, and a DAL project with all the model code. Sometimes code in the DAL needs to check if the current user is authorized to perform some actions, by checking something like CurrentUser.IsAdmin. For the web site, the current is derived from the Windows username (from HttpContext.Current.User.Identity), but this is clearly a web concern and shouldn't be coupled to the DAL. What's the best pattern to loosely couple the authentication? Should the DAL be asking the MVC code for a username, or the MVC be telling the DAL? Are there advantages or disadvantages to one or the other? Thank you!
