• SQL SERVER – TechEd India 2012 – Content, Speakers and a Lots of Fun

  TechEd is one event which every developers and IT professionals are looking forward to attend. It is opportunity of life time and no matter how many time one gets chance to engage with it, it is never enough. I still remember every single moment of every TechEd I have attended so far. We are less than 100 hours away from TechEd India 2012 event.This event is the one must attend event for every Technology Enthusiast. Fourth time in the row I am going to attend this event and I am equally excited as the first time of the event. There are going to be two very solid SQL Server track this time and I will be attending end of the end both the tracks. Here is my view on each of the 10 sessions. Day 1, March 21, 2012 T-SQL Rediscovered with SQL Server 2012 – This session is going to bring some of the lesser known enhancements that were brought with SQL Server 2012. When I learned that Jacob Sebastian is going to do this session my reaction to this is DEMO, DEMO and DEMO! Jacob spends hours and hours of his time preparing his session and this will be one of those session that I am confident will be delivered over and over through out the next many events. Catapult your data with SQL Server 2012 Integration Services – Praveen is expert story teller and one of the wizard when it is about SQL Server and business intelligence. He is surely going to mesmerize you with some interesting insights on SSIS performance too. Processing Big Data with SQL Server 2012 and Hadoop – There are three sessions on Big Data at TechEd India 2012. Stephen is going to deliver one of the session. Watching Stephen present is always joy and quite entertaining. He shares knowledge with his typical humor which captures ones attention. I wrote about what is BIG DATA in a blog post. SQL Server Misconceptions and Resolutions – I will be presenting this Session along with Vinod Kumar. READ MORE HERE. Securing with ContainedDB in SQL Server 2012 – Pranab is expert when it is about SQL Server and Security. I have seen him presenting and he is indeed very pleasant to watch. A dry subject like security, he makes it much lively. A Contained Database is a database which contains all the necessary settings and metadata, making database easily portable to another server. This database will contain all the necessary details and will not have to depend on any server where it is installed for anything. You can take this database and move it to another server without having any worries. Day 3, March 23, 2012 Peeling SQL Server like an Onion: Internals Demystified – Vinod Kumar has been writing about this extensively on his other blog post. In recent conversation he suggested that he will be creating very exclusive content for this presentation. I know Vinod for long time and have worked with him along many community activities. I am going to pay special attention to the details. I know Vinod has few give-away planned now for attending the session now only if he shares with us. Speed Up – Parallel Processes and unparalleled Performance – Performance tuning is my favorite subject. I will be discussing effect of parallelism on performance in this session. Keep your database available – AlwaysOn – Balmukund is like an army man. He is always ready to show and prove that he has coolest toys in terms of SQL Server and he knows how to keep them running AlwaysON. Availability groups, Listener, Clustering, Failover, Read-Only replica etc all will be demo’ed in this session. This is really heavy but very interesting content not to be missed. Lesser known facts about SQL Server Backup and Restore – Amit Banerjee – this name is known internationally for solving SQL Server problems in 140 characters. He has already blogged about this and this topic is going to be interesting. A successful restore strategy for applications is as good as their last good known backup. I have few difficult questions to ask to Amit and I am very sure that his unique style will entertain people. By the way, his one of the slide may give few in audience a funny heart attack. Top 5 reasons why you want SQL Server 2012 BI – Praveen plans to take a tour of some of the BI enhancements introduced in the new version. Business Insights with SQL Server is a critical building block and this version of SQL Server is no exception. For the matter of the fact, when I saw the demos he was going to show during this session, I felt like that I wish I can set up all of this on my machine. • Reflections on GiveCamp

  I participated in the Seattle GiveCamp over the weekend, and am entirely impressed.  GiveCamp is a great event – I especially like how rewarding it is for everybody involved.  I strongly encourage any and all developers to watch for future GiveCamp events, and consider participating, for many reasons… GiveCamp provides real value to organizations that truly need help.  The Seattle event alone succeeded in helping sixteen non-profit organizations in many different ways.  The projects involved varied dramatically, including website redesigns, SEO, reworking data management workflows, and even game development.  Many non-profits have a strong need for good, quality technical help.  However, nearly every non-profit organization has an incredibly limited budget.  GiveCamp is a way to really give back, and provide incredibly valuable help to organizations that truly benefit. My experience has shown many developers to be incredibly generous – this is a chance to dedicate your energy to helping others in a way that really takes advantage of your expertise.  Your time as a developer is incredibly valuable, and this puts something of incredible value directly into the hands of places its needed. First, and foremost, GiveCamp is about providing technical help to non-profit organizations in need. GiveCamp can make you a better developer.  This is a fantastic opportunity for us, as developers, to work with new people, in a new setting.  The incredibly short time frame (one weekend for a deliverable project) and intense motivation to succeed provides a huge opportunity for learning from peers.  I’d personally like to thank off the developers with whom I worked – I learned something from each and every one of you.  I hope to see and work with all of you again someday. GiveCamp provides an opportunity for you to work outside of your comfort zone. While it’s always nice to be an expert, it’s also valuable to work on a project where you have little or no direct experience.  My team focused on a complete reworking of our organizations message and a complete new website redesign and deployment using WordPress.  While I’d used WordPress for my blog, and had some experience, this is completely unrelated to my professional work.  In fact, nobody on our team normally worked directly with the technologies involved – yet together we managed to succeed in delivering our goals.  As developers, it’s easy to want to stay abreast of new technology surrounding our expertise, but its rare that we get a chance to sit down and work on something practical that is completely outside of our normal realm of work.  I’m a desktop developer by trade, and spent much of the weekend working with CSS and Photoshop.  Many of the projects organizations need don’t match perfectly with the skill set in the room – yet all of the software professionals rose to the occasion and delivered practical, usable applications. GiveCamp is a short term, known commitment. While this seems obvious, I think it’s an important aspect to remember.  This is a huge part of what makes it successful – you can work, completely focused, on a project, then walk away completely when you’re done.  There is no expectation of continued involvement.  While many of the professionals I’ve talked to are willing to contribute some amount of their time beyond the camp, this is not expected. The freedom this provides is immense.  In addition, the motivation this brings is incredibly valuable.  Every developer in the room was very focused on delivering in time – you have one shot to get it as good as possible, and leave it with the organization in a way that can be maintained by them.  This is a rare experience – and excellent practice at time management for everyone involved. GiveCamp provides a great way to meet and network with your peers. Not only do you get to network with other software professionals in your area – you get to network with amazing people.  Every single person in the room is there to try to help people.  The balance of altruism, intelligence, and expertise in the room is something I’ve never before experienced. During the presentations of what was accomplished, I felt blessed to participate.  I know many people in the room were incredibly touched by the level of dedication and accomplishment over the weekend. GiveCamp is fun. At the end of the experience, I would have signed up again, even if it was a painful, tedious weekend – merely due to the amazing accomplishments achieved throughout the event.  However, the event is fun.  Everybody I talked to, the entire weekend, was having a good time.  While there were many faces focused into a near grimace at times (including mine, I’ll admit), this was always in response to a particularly challenging problem or task.  The challenges just added to the overall enjoyment of the weekend – part of why I became a developer in the first place is my love for challenge and puzzles, and a short deadline using unfamiliar technology provided plenty of opportunity for puzzles.  As soon as people would stand up, it was another smile.   If you’re a developer, I’d recommend looking at GiveCamp more closely.  Watch for an event in your area.  If there isn’t one, consider building a team and organizing an event.  The experience is worth the commitment.

• Wine 1.2 crash after I start Mega 5.0

  I installed Mega 5.0 by running "sudo sh MEGA5_Setup_deb_v2.sh" The application downloaded wine 1.2 as mega requires in order to work under Ubuntu. However every time I start the application through the icon provided, wine crashes asking me to send/save bug report, the problem is that if I choose to do so, megas starting window pops up covering the bug report window leaving me unable to do anything (as it won't move) The only solution I have come up with is to log out and log back in, as I cancels wine. I beg you following: Please post detailed step by step instructions how to deal with said problem Tell me if forceful log out, can damage computer of any of my data Please forgive me my weak English as it is not my native language. Also forgive me my weak skills concerning Ubuntu usage as I have me forced to switch to Ubuntu this very day. Thank you.

• MySQL fails to start after upgrade to 12.04?

  I'm a newbie on MySQL ground so bear with me. I've just finished upgrading 11.10 to 12.04. Everything seemed to work without any hiccups and all my software and settings are working fine. Apart from MySQL. When I try: sudo start mysql I receive an error: start: Job failed to start Where can I possibly diagnose what the problem is? And (hopefully) - how to sort it out? (I disabled automatic start following advice here if that is of some importance) Update 1: Both outputs of: cat /var/log/mysql.err cat /var/log/mysql.log are empty. Output of dmesg | grep mysql: [ 1401.785141] type=1400 audit(1335619832.181:25): apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_replace" name="/usr/sbin/mysqld" pid=16165 comm="apparmor_parser" [ 1401.791089] init: Failed to spawn mysql main process: unable to execute: No such file or directory Update 2: As indicated by AWinter below - it seemed that MySQL disappeared automagically after upgrade and had to be reinstalled.

• Lubuntu 12.04 PPC slow startup and shutdown

  I've installed Lubuntu 12.04 on a Powerbook G4 (PowerPC 1GHz, 1 gb ram, Geforce MX 440). Everything works perfectly except the startup and shutdown. To startup my system I have to wait about 3 minutes (and similar time to shutdown) Giving a look @ /var/log/dmesg I noticed the following [drm] nouveau 0000:00:10.0: Detected an NV10 generation card (0x017900a5) checking generic (b8004000 151800) vs hw (b8000000 80000000) fb: conflicting fb hw usage nouveaufb vs 0Ffb NVDA,Displ - removing generic driver The only issue concerns Nouveau ... inside my /var/log/kern.log says what follows BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! I've booted passing the "nouveau.modeset=0" parameter and the system boot in 15 seconds but with 4 bit graphics -- Any idea how to fix? Thanks in advance for any help

• Implementing a "state-machine" logic for methods required by an object in C++

  What I have: 1 hypothetical object/class + other classes and related methods that gives me functionality. What I want: linking this object to 0 to N methods in realtime on request when an event is triggered Each event is related to a single method or a class, so a single event does not necessarily mean "connect this 1 method only" but can also mean "connect all the methods from that class or a group of methods" Avoiding linked lists because I have to browse the entire list to know what methods are linked, because this does not ensure me that the linked methods are kept in a particular order (let's say an alphabetic order by their names or classes), and also because this involve a massive amount of pointers usage. Example: I have an object Employee Jon, Jon acquires knowledge and forgets things pretty easily, so his skills may vary during a period of time, I'm responsible for what Jon can add or remove from his CV, how can I implement this logic?

• Unsatisfied Link Error and missing .so files when starting Eclipse

  I upgraded to the 12.04 beta yesterday. Now, when I try to start Eclipse, I get the splash screen and then this error message: An error has occurred. See the log file /home/gabriel/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.7.0_155965261/configuration/1335382319394.log . The log file says something like this: java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Could not load SWT library. Reasons: no swt-gtk-3740 in java.library.path no swt-gtk in java.library.path Can't load library: /home/gabriel/.swt/lib/linux/x86_64/libswt-gtk-3740.so Can't load library: /home/gabriel/.swt/lib/linux/x86_64/libswt-gtk.so followed by many more error messages. The /home/gabriel/.swt/lib/linux/x86_64/ directory exists, but is empty. I also tried reinstalling eclipse with no success. Any ideas?

• Gnome Keyring keeps asking for a password that doesn't exist

  When ever I long into Ubuntu, I'm immediately presented with a dialogue that asks me to enter the password that will unlock Gnome Keyring, however I was never prompted to set this in the first place, and none of the passwords I've tried are effective. How can I disable these popups and just have Gnome Keyring unlocked when I log in in the same way that encrypted home directories are automatically mounted upon log in. FWIW, I'm set to auto log in, which may or may not be useful information. Btw, I've seen this question, and the accepted answer didn't work. I'd rather not uninstall Keyring Update 1: I've disabled automatic login but it still appears.

  I'm making a game where I need events to happen in a precise amount of time. Explanation : I want that event A happens at 12000ms, and event B happens every 10000ms. So "if"s should looks like this. //event A if(Ticks == 12000) //do things //even B if(Ticks % 10000 == 0) //do stuff But now how can I have this "Ticks" value ? I tried to declare an int and then increasing it in the update method, I tried 2 ways of increasing it : Ticks++; It doesn't works because the update method is not always called every microseconds. Ticks += delta; It's kinda good but the delta is not always equals to 1, so I can miss the precise values I need in the if statements So if you know how can I do events in a precise amount of time please tell me how can I do this

• Having a hard time having consecutive animations for an attack

  So I've been trying to figure this out for about 8 hours now...It's driving me nuts because I am pretty sure that it is something dead simple that I am just not understanding. I had everything working fine when I was just cycling through the animation: Idle - Attack - Attack 1 - Attack 2. Just in an infinite loop. The problem now is that I want it to go Attack - check if x time passes if ctrl pressed before x passes move to Attack 1, if not move back to Idle - Then either Attack 1 or Idle depending on how long has passed. I've almost gotten it a few time, but something always happens where it falls apart if I press ctrl too fast or after multiple cycles of the animation. Any help would be appreciated, I'm just at my wits end on this one. I've been looking at this so long that I just don't know where to go anymore. • SQL, moving million records from a database to other database [migrated]

  I am a C# developer, I am not really good with SQL. I have a simple questions here. I need to move more than 50 millions records from a database to other database. I tried to use the import function in ms SQL, however it got stuck because the log was full (I got an error message The transaction log for database 'mydatabase' is full due to 'LOG_BACKUP'). The database recovery model was set to simple. My friend said that importing millions records using task-import data will cause the log to be massive and told me to use loop instead to transfer the data, does anyone know how and why? thanks in advance

Keith Larson: What where your thoughts when you heard that Oracle was going to provide the community the MySQL Conference ?Ronald Bradford: Oracle has already been providing various different local community events including OTN Tech Days and  MySQL community days. These are great for local regions both in the US and abroad.  In previous years there has been an increase of content at Oracle Open World, however that benefits the Oracle community far more then the MySQL community.  It is good to see that Oracle is realizing the benefit in providing a large scale dedicated event for the MySQL community that includes speakers from the MySQL development teams, invested companies in the ecosystem and other community evangelists.I fully expect a successful event and look forward to hopefully seeing MySQL Connect at the upcoming Brazil and Japan OOW conferences and perhaps an event on the East Coast.Keith Larson: Since you are part of the content committee, what did you think of the submissions that were received during call for papers?Ronald Bradford: There was a large number of quality submissions to the number of available presentation sessions. As with the previous years as a committee member for the annual MySQL conference, there is always a large variety of common cornerstone MySQL features as well as new products and upcoming companies sharing their MySQL experiences. All of the usual major players in the ecosystem will in presenting at MySQL Connect including Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Continuent, Percona, Tokutek, Sphinx and Amazon to name a few.  This is ensuring the event will have a large number of quality speakers and a difficult time in choosing what to attend. Keith Larson: What sessions do you look forwarding to attending? Ronald Bradford: As with most quality conferences you can only be in one place at one time, so with multiple tracks per session it is always difficult to decide. The continued work and success with MySQL Cluster, and with a number of sessions I am sure will be popular. The features that interest me the most are around the optimizer, where there are several sessions on new features, and on the importance of backups. There are three presentations in this area to choose from.Keith Larson: Are you going to cover any of the content in your books at your MySQL Connect sessions?Ronald Bradford: I will be giving two presentations at MySQL Connect. The first will include the techniques available for creating better indexes where I will be touching on some aspects of the first Effective MySQL book on Optimizing SQL Statements.  In my second presentation from experiences of managing 500+ AWS MySQL instances, I will be touching on areas including SQL tuning, backup and recovery and scale out with replication.   These are the key topics of the initial books in the Effective MySQL series that focus on performance, scalability and business continuity.  The books however cover a far greater amount of detail then can be presented in a 1 hour session. Keith Larson: What features of MySQL 5.6 do you look forward to the most ?Ronald Bradford: I am very impressed with the optimizer trace feature. The ability to see exposed information is invaluable not just for MySQL 5.6, but to also apply information discerned for optimizing SQL statements in earlier versions of MySQL.  Not everybody understands that it is easy to deploy a MySQL 5.6 slave into an existing topology running an older version if MySQL for evaluation of many new features.  You can use the new mysqlbinlog streaming feature for duplicating master binary logs on an older version with a MySQL 5.6 slave.  The improvements in instrumentation in the Performance Schema are exciting.   However, as with my upcoming Replication Techniques in Depth title, that will be available for sale at MySQL Connect, there are numerous replication features, some long overdue with provide significant management benefits. Crash Save Slaves, Global transaction Identifiers (GTID)  and checksums just to mention a few.Keith Larson: You have been to numerous conferences, what would you recommend for people at the conference? Ronald Bradford: Make the time to meet and introduce yourself to the speakers that cover the topics that most interest you. The MySQL ecosystem has a very strong community.  The relationships you build with presenters, developers and architects in MySQL can be invaluable, however they are created over time. Get to know these people, interact with them over time.  This is the opportunity to learn more then just the content from a 1 hour session. Keith Larson: Any additional tips to handling the long hours ? Ronald Bradford: Conferences can be hard, especially with all the post event drinking.  This is a two day event and I am sure will include additional events on Friday and Saturday night so come well prepared, and leave work behind. Take the time to learn something new.   You can always catchup on sleep later. • Suspend after delay via SSH

  I know how to suspend after a delay by using: echo 'pmi action suspend' | at now + 1 minutes However, that only seems to work as long as I keep the console window open. Am I correct in assuming that the at commands are cleared when I close the console? This is an issue as I want to be able to log in to my computer via SSH, send the suspend command, then log out before it happens. Suspending immediately tends to freeze my local console window, which is inconvenient. Is there a way to send a delayed suspend command without it being cleared when I log out?

• combining ruby and C++

  Hello /* programmers */ (I usually hang in SO) I've been discussing a conceptual project with a friend of mine and the the most effective way we've seen of doing it is writing the engine in C++ while the logic would be done in Ruby. However, we would need data to be passed around often, for example: Engine reports that A happened, that gets triggered in a proc array (event "A" is passed but proc doesnt use it) Ruby decides that we need to wait for B to happen Ruby adds a proc to an array. The array of procs is iterated during each cycle in the C++ engine C++ engine reports that B happened and passes "event B (should be a ruby object) Ruby receives event B and decides what to do next I don't work with multiple languages often, and was wondering if it's possible to implement things in this way. I know that there's the ruby VALUE in C++, but would like to know the standard way of combining the two. (of course I know ruby follows the perl "more than 1 way to do it", but there's often a standardized way)

• Whoosh: PASS Board Year 1, Q4

  "Whoosh". That's the sound the last quarter of 2012 made as it rushed by. My first year on the PASS Board is complete, and the last three months of it were probably the busiest. PASS Summit 2012 Much of October was devoted to preparing for Summit. Every Board  member, HQ staffer and dozens of volunteers were busy in the run-up to our flagship event. It takes a lot of work to put on the Summit. The community meetings,  first-timers program, keynotes, sessions and that fabulous Community Appreciation party are the result of many hours of preparation. Virtual Chapters at the Summit With a lot of help from Karla Landrum, Michelle Nalliah, Lana Montgomery and others at HQ the VCs had a good presence at Summit. We started the week with a VC leaders meeting. I shared some information about the activities and growth during the first part of the year.   From January - September 2012: The number of VCs increased from 14 to 20 VC membership  grew from 55,200 to 80,100 Total attendance at VC meetings increased from 1,480 to 2,198 Been part of PASS Global Growth with language-based VC- including Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese. We also heard from some VC leaders and volunteers. Ryan Adams (Performance VC) shared his tips for successful marketing of VC events. Amy Lewis (Business Intelligence VC) described how the BI chapter has expanded to support PASS' global growth by finding volunteers to organize events at times that are convenient for people in Europe and Australia. Felipe Ferreira (Portuguese language VC) described the experience of building a user group first in Brazil, then expanding to work with Portuguese-speaking data professionals around the world. Virtual Chapter leaders and volunteers were in evidence throughout Summit, beginning with the Welcome Reception. For the past several years VCs have had an organized presence at this event, signing up new members and advertising their meetings. Many VC leaders also spent time at the Community Zone. This new addition to the Summit proved to be a vibrant spot were new members and volunteers could network with others and find out how to start a chapter or host a SQL Saturday. Women In Technology 2012 was the 10th WIT Luncheon to be held at Summit. I was honored to be asked to be on the panel to discuss the topic "Where Have We Been and Where are We Going?" The PASS community has come a long way in our understanding of issues facing women in tech and our support of women in the organization. It was great to hear from panelists Stefanie Higgins and Kevin Kline who were there at the beginning as well as Kendra Little and Jen Stirrup who are part of the progress being made by women in our community today. Bylaw Changes The Board spent a good deal of time in 2012 discussing how to move our global growth initiatives forward. An important component of this is a proposed change to how the Board is elected with some seats representing geographic regions. At the end of December we voted on these proposed bylaw changes which have been published for review. The member review and feedback is open until February 8. I encourage all members to review these changes and send any feedback to [email protected]  In addition to reading the bylaws, I recommend reading Bill Graziano's blog post on the subject. Business Analytics Conference At Summit we announced a new event: the PASS Business Analytics Conference. The inaugural event will be April 10-12, 2013 in Chicago. The world of data is changing rapidly. More and more businesses want to extract value and insight from their data. Data professionals who provide these insights or enable others to do so are in demand. The BA Conference offers expert content on predictive analytics, data exploration and visualization, content delivery strategies and more. By holding this new event PASS is participating in important discussions happening in our industry, offering our members more educational value and reaching out to data professionals who are not currently part of our organization. New Year, New Portfolio In addition to my work with the Virtual Chapters I am also now responsible for the 24 Hours of PASS portfolio. Since the first 24HOP of 2013 is scheduled for January 30 we started the transition of the portfolio work from Rob Farley to me right after Summit. Work immediately started to secure speakers for the January event. We have also been evaluating webinar platforms that can be used for 24HOP as well as the Virtual Chapters. Next Up 24 Hours of PASS: Business Analytics Edition will be held on January 30. I'll be there and will moderate one or two sessions. The 24HOP topics are a sneak peek into the type of content that will be offered at the Business Analytics Conference. I hope to see some of you there. The Virtual Chapters have hit the ground running in 2013; many of them have events scheduled. The Application Development VC is getting restarted  and a new Business Analytics VC will be starting soon. Check out the lineup and join the VCs that interest you. And watch the Events page and Connector for announcements of upcoming meetings. At the end of January I will be attending a Board meeting in Seattle, and February 23 I will be at SQL Saturday #177 in Silicon Valley.

• VMWare Kernel Modules will not compile or update on Ubuntu 12.04

  Kernel Module Update was required when opening VMWare client (vmplayer) then following error occurs. Any idea would be appreciated. Unable to start services. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-NNN.log for details (Note: NNN looks like random numbers) On GUI that show progress of updating, "Virtual Netowork Device" show red flag appears. DETAIL – Unspecified error Solution: Option 1 – Log on locally with the service account once to create a local profile for it. Option 2 - Modify the application pool by going into IIS > Application Pools > Right-Click offending app pool > Advanced Settings > Set “Load User Profile” to False. Give it try!! Good luck!!

  I'm trying to install pygame using pip in a virtualenv. I'm following this tutorial on using Kivy. • After re-installing ubuntu 13.10, stuck at GRUB Rescue, Boot-Repair didn't work!

  Because i could not get the WiFi login work, i thought i will reinstall ubuntu, with internet connection to have updated drivers for wireless & graphics etc. I have deleted earlier linux partitions usings gparted and re-installed ubuntu 13.10, exactly following the same steps as i did earlier, making a 100GB /home on dev/sda and pointing root to /dev/sdb (SSD) and swap on dev/sda/ . Installing boot on /dev/sdb. But, somehow i think the grub is either corrupted or removed because i am unable to boot the laptop to any OS now. I get the following message: "no such device" xxxxx followed by huge HEX number GRUB rescue when i type ls on Grub rescue prompt, i can see hd0 & hd1, but thats about it. i tried Boot-repair but it is unable to fix the problem. The following log is generated via boot-repair create log: Boot-repair log I am unable to boot into windows or linux at the moment and need help to fix the grub so i can boot !!

• What's the format of Real World Performance Day?

  A question that has cropped a lot of late is "what's the format of Real World Performance Day?" Not an unreasonable question you might think. Sure enough, a quick check of the Independent Oracle User Group's website tells us a bit about the Real World Performance Day event, but no formal agenda? This was one of the questions I posed to Tom Kyte (one of the main presenters) in our recent podcast. Tom tells us that this isn't your traditional event where one speaker follows another with loads of slides. In fact, the Real World Performance Day features Tom and fellow Oracle performance experts - Andrew Holdsworth and Graham Wood - continuously on stage throughout the day. All three will be discussing database performance challenges and solutions from development, architectural design and management perspectives. There's going to be multi-terabyte demos on show, less of the traditional slides, and more interactive debate and discussion going on. • Corona SDK: Animation takes a long time to play after "prepare" step

  First off, I'm using the current publicly available build, version 2011.704 I'm building a platformer, and have a character that runs along and jumps when the screen is tapped. While jumping, the animation code has him assume a svelte jumping pose, and upon the detection of a collision with the ground, he returns to running. All of this happens. The problem is that there is this strange gap of time, about 1/2 a second by the feel of it, where my character sits on the first frame of the run animation after landing, before it actually starts playing. This leads me to believe that the problem is somewhere between the "prepare" step of loading up a sprite set's animation sequence and the "play" step. Thanks in advance for any help :). • Adding new events to be handled by script part without recompilation of c++ source code

  As in title I want to write an Event system with handling methods written in external script language, that is Angelscript. The AS methods would have acess to game's world modifing API ( which has to be regsitered for Angelscript Machine as the game starts) . I have come to this problem : if we use the Angelsript for rapid prototyping of the game's world behavior , we would like to be able to define new Event Types, without recompiling the main binary. Is that ever possible , don't stick to Angelscript, I think about any possible scripting language. The main thought is this : If there's some really new Event possible to be constructed , we must monitor some information coming from the binary, for example some variable value changing and the Events are just triggered on some conditions on those changes , wer might be monitoring the Creatures HP, by having a function call on each change, there we could define new Events such as Creature hurt, creature killed, creature healed , creature killed and tormented to pieces ( like geting HP very much below 0 ) . Are there any other ideas of constructing new Events at the scripting side ?

• Rebooting problem

  After restarting my ubuntu PC, I am getting a dialog window showing "Your system is running in low graphics mode" and after clicking on 'OK', I was prompted with three options 1. Run in low graphics mode for just one session 2. Reconfigure graphics 3. Troubleshoot the error 4. Exit to console login When I troubleshoot the error, its showing the black screen with following lines which I remember: we do not own /var/log/pm-powersave.log ....................................... couldn't write bytes: Broken pipe ....................................... ....................................... Starting System V runlevel compatibility got strucked at this point. Actually before restarting, I have changed the owner for all the files under the directory "/var/log" and "/var/lib". Is there any relation with the above issue. Please help me out to resolve the issue. Its urgent.
