• Looking for a specific featured content slider script - PHP (and jQuery, I think)

  I was looking around a few days ago for a new script to replace the featured content area on my website's current implementation. Randomly, I can across a gorgeous one that I have not been able to find again because, like an idiot, I didn't bookmark the page. It's difficult to explain what the slider looked like, so I'll try to make a crude ASCII image of it: When you would hover your mouse over one of the "title" areas that were visible, the rest of the tags would slide to the right and show the one you were hovering on. You could also hover the mouse over a tab on the right and the tabs would collapse left for the same effect. I don't know if this particular effect has a specific name to it, but for the life of me I cannot find this script again, or anything even like it. It was gorgeous. I've resorted to combing through my browser history, but there is sooooo much of it, and I cannot remember what day I saw it. So, if any of you know either what the name of this effect is, or even BETTER, what script I'm talking about, I would REAAAAALLLLYYY appreciate a link! Thanks as always! -Sootah

• IE7 is clipping my text. How do I adjust its attitude?

  Hi All, A few days ago I re-skinned my website, http://emle.nl. Development of this skin was primarily done using safari, and as expected, it all renders fine using firefox and opera. I've had to make a few small tweaks for IE7, but nothing much, except for one problem... The date indicators for a post are cut off in IE. This problem seems to occur only on nested span tags inside a left floating div. I think I need the floating div's in order to layout text on the left and the right side of the screen. Anyhow, I've summarized it into a small test case, located at http://emle.nl/test.html. In the different browsers, it looks like this. Of course safari and firefox get this right: Do any of you know how to stop IE7 from clipping my text? Edit: I have sort of given up on this problem. My scripts now check for IE7 and feed it somewhat simplified HTML that its limited engine can handle. It works in IE8, so, for now, just the special case for IE7 will have to do...

• IE bug with TD's tables and whitespace?

  Hi there, I have a page that is using tables, in FF etc it works perfect, but in IE7 it causes issues, its basically where the four corners have a td and and img (its a rounded corner form) .. if i remove the whitespace from the document it fixes the issue.. What actually happens is that it messes up the tables.. it puts a thin white line between the upper tr that holds the 2 corners and the next tr I need to remove the the whitespace between the img and the TD, is there a better work around, as i have lots and not only that if i reformat the document the problem returns.. here is a simple example.. <table width="100%" height="418" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" bgcolor="#F04A23" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px"> <tr> <td width="12" align="left" valign="top"> <img src="content/images/corner_left.gif" width="12" height="12" /> </td> as you can see there is white space between img and td... and i remove it so it looks like this <img src="content/images/corner_left.gif" width="12" height="12" /></td> the problem is gone, (notice the td and image are right next to each other) Any ideas, i tried setting all sorts of css, padding 0px, margins 0px etc ... Any ideas really appreciated

• Vertical Image Border Changes Alignment when Screen is not maximized

  I have some pretty straightforward HTML code with a few tables to organize various items of text or images. All works fine except that I need to place a vertical border on both the left and right sides of the screen. I am able to do this with a 2x2 pixel image that I stretch out. When the user has their screen maximized, everything looks great. But when the user hits "Restore Down", then the borders stay in place, but the tables get shoved down so that they start below where the borders end, which is off screen. in other words, the relational alignment between the borders and the tables gets all screwed up. Does anybody know how to make this alignment stay consistent on a restore down? I'm pretty much a newbie with html and asp, so speak slowly. If there is a better method to accomplish this, I'm all ears. Thanks. • Implementing a normal website inside ASP.NET MVC 2

  I have a website consisting of an index.html, a number of style sheet files as well as some javascript files. Then I needed a way for this site to communicate efficiently with a Microsoft SQL Server, so I was recommended to use the MVC framework to facilitate that kind of communication. I created the C#.net controller code needed to output the necessary information from the database using URL parameters, so now I am trying to put the whole web-site together inside the MVC framework. I started an empty project-template in MVC 2 framework. I'm sure there must be a good way to implement the current code into this framework, but I am very uncertain as to what the best approach to this would be. Could anyone point me in the right direction here? I'm not sure whether I need to change any of the current HTML, or exactly what to add to it. I'd love to see some kind of guide or tutorial, or just any advice I can get as I try to learn this. Any help is very much appreciated!

• Flash Without a SWF File?

  Is there any way to embed Flash completely in HTML, without reference to an external SWF file? I ask because I would like to send an HTML file as an email attachment that the recipient will open in a browser and fill out as a form. The last step is that they will copy the result to their clipboard, paste it into a new message, and email it back. I cannot reliably copy to the clipboard with JavaScript because of the security issues, but there are simple Flash apps to add that capability. I know I could just display the response text (which will be Base64 encoded) to the recipient and have them copy/paste, but it would be nice to provide this small convenience to them. Also, so you are aware, the text is often too large to include in an email using mailto. Yes. This needs to be done via email. The users have slow, occasional satellite email access and no other data connection to the interwebs. To make things worse, I cannot make them install anything. It is a difficult situation.

• Jquery class changing works, but doesn't effect another function like it should

  So I have content boxes that close and expand when you click an arrow. The content box has two classes for telling whether it is open or closed (.box_open, .box_closed). A hover function is assigned to box_open so when it is open and you hover over the header, the arrow appears. However, I don't want this to happen when the box is closed, as I want to arrow to remain visible when the box is closed. When the box closes, the box_open class is removed, but the function assigned to that class still works. Here's the jquery code for the two functions. • Play framework does not return page and static content

  I'm using play framework in production for one of my web projects. From time to time Play does not render main page or does not return some of the static content files. I have attached few screenshots below. First screenshot displays firebug console, loading of the site is stucked at the beginning, when serving home page. Second screenshot display fiddler console, when 2 static resources are not loading. This issue is hard to reproduce, it happens 1 of 15 time, I have to delete cache data and reload page. (pressing CRTL-F5 in FF). Issue can be reproduced in most of the browsers. Initially, I was thinging that there is something wrong with hosting provider. But I have changed hosting provided and issue has not gone. Version of the play is 1.2.2. Play is running as standalone server. Not sure, but probably deploying Play to Jetty/Tomcat/Resin would help. Also I'm thinging about rewriting application to another stack (well-known for me - j2ee, spring, whatever) I have no idea how to debug and resolve this issue. Any clue ? Has anyone faced same issue with Play before ?

  MVC newbie question re binders. Supposing I have two strongly typed partial actions that happen to have a model attributes with the same name, and are rendered in the same containing page i.e.: Class Friend {string Name {get; set ;} DateTime DOB {get; set ;}} Class Foe {string Name {get; set ;} string ReasonForDislike {get; set ;}} Both partials will have a line: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.Name) %> And associated controller actions: public ActionResult SaveFriend(Friend friend) public ActionResult SaveFoe(Foe foe) My problem is that both will render on my containing page with the same id (of course, bad for lots of reasons). I’m aware of the [Bind] attribute that allows me add a prefix, resulting in code: public ActionResult SaveFriend([Bind(Prefix = “friend”)] Friend friend) <%= Html.TextBox("friend.Name", Model. Name) %> //Boo, no TextBoxFor :( But this still doesn’t cut it. I can just about tolerate the loss of the strongly typed TextBoxFor helpers but I’ve yet to get clientside validation to work with prefixes: I’ve tried: <%= Html.ValidationMessage("friend.Name") %> ...and every other variant I can think of. I seem to need the model to be aware of the prefix in both directions but bind only applies when mapping the inbound request. It seems (to me) a common scenario but I’m struggling to find examples out there. What am I missing! Thanks in advance.

• Changing character encoding in MySQL, PHP scripts, HTML

  So, I have built on this system for quite some time, and it is currently outputting Latin1 (ISO-8859-1) to the web browser, and this is the components: MySQL - all data is stored with the Latin1 character set PHP - All PHP text files are stored on disk with Latin1 encoding HTML - The output has the http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" meta tag So, I'm trying to understand how the encoding of the different parts come into play in my workflow. If I open a PHP script and change its encoding within the text editor to UTF-8 and save it back to disk and reload the web browser, the text is all messed up - unless the text comes from the DB. If I change the encoding of the DB to UTF-8 and keep the PHP files in latin1 I have to use utf8_decode() for the data to display correctly. And if I change the HTML code the browser will read it incorrectly. So yeah, I realise that if I want to "upgrade" to UTF8, I have to update all three parts of this setup for it to work correctly, but since it's a huge system with some 180k lines of PHP code and millions of posts in a lot of databases/tables, I don't want to start something like this without understanding everything correctly. What haven't I thought about? What could mess this up beyond fixing? What are the procedures for changing the encoding of an entire MySQL installation and what's the easiest way to change the encoding of hundreds or thousands of PHP files on disk? The META tag is luckily added dynamically, so I'll change that in one place only :) Let me hear about your experiences with this.

One of the buttons is for submit, and the other one have a function in JS, that add's another textbox, and a drop down list. In the post controller action method, how do I get all the parameters? • Using jQuery tools from within GWT -- is there a way to allow exchanges?

  I have a GWT web-app with a nearly full page Google map window. Inside the the map, I have infowindows which include links. What I want to do is use jquery tools overlays (http://flowplayer.org/tools/overlay/apple.html) to open the overlay and display it on top of the map once the link inside the info window is clicked. Now, the link source is generated dynamically, and it is hosted on a different server, so i have to open it in an iframe and set the source of the iframe before it opens. this seems simple enough since i only have 1 iframe on the page: function changeSource(url){ $("#menuIFrame").attr("src",url); } To call this before opening the overlay (which is done on mouse release), i create the following element in the google maps infowindow via GWT: <a href="http://whatever.com/menu/" onClick="changeSource('http://whatever.com/menu/');" rel=#menu"> View menu </a> Jquery tools works by opening whatever div has the id assigned to the value of 'rel', but because i have my javascript/jquery on my LandingPage.html in GWT, there appears to be some sort of disconnect between the two because the changeSource function is never called AND the overlay is never added to the window. Here's my app: http://truxmapper.appspot.com/ As you can see, the other overlays will work fine, but once you click an infowindow and try to view the menu, it will simply use the href to open the url in that window.   I've previously asked a question regarding passing files to the browser so a user receives a download prompt. However these files were really just strings creatd at the end of a function and it was simple to pass them to an iframe's src attribute for the desired effect. Now I have a more ambitious requirement, I need to pass pre existing files of any format to the browser. I have attempted this using the following code: def return_file(request): try: bob=open(urllib.unquote(request.POST["file"]),"rb") response=HttpResponse(content=bob,mimetype="application/x-unknown") response["Content-Disposition"] = "attachment; filename=nothing.xls" return HttpResponse(response) except: return HttpResponse(sys.exc_info()) With my original setup the following jQuery was sufficient to give the desired download prompt: jQuery('#download').attr("src","/return_file/"); However this won't work anymore as I need to pass POST values to the function. my attempt to rectify that is below, but instead of a download prompt I get the file displayed as text. jQuery.get("/return_file/",{"file":"c:/filename.xls"},function(data) { jQuery(thisButton).children("iframe").attr("src",data); }); Any ideas as to where I'm going wrong? • CSS Multiple multi-column divs

  I have a bunch of items (text, image, mixed content, etc) that I want to display. The user can define what row and what column that item appears in. For example, in row 1, there could be two items/columns, both images. In row two, there could be three items / columns, one with an image, two others as pure text. Oh, and the user may specify the width of any particular column/image/item. I have a solution that uses multiple tables that works. In essence, each row is a new table. This works for the most part. I'm wondering if I can use just divs? Now my CSS foo is lacking, and I tried to copy examples from the web, and I haven't been able to get it working. Right now I have something like this: `[for each row] [for each column] [content] ` But everything is overlapping each other. I've also tried using "position: relative", but things look even more borked. So can divs actually be used for multiple rows and different number of columns?

• What options exist to get text/ list items to appear in columns?

  I have a bunch of HTML markup coming from an external source, and it is mainly h3 elements and ul elements. I want to have the content flow in 3 columns. I know there is something coming in CSS3, but what options do I have to get this content to flow nicely into the 3 columns at the time being? I'm not that concerned about IE6 (as long as it degrades gracefully). Am I stuck using jQuery to parse the markup and chop it up into 3 divs which float? • iPad width in viewport settings overflowing past device width

  I am at my wit's end here, and I beseech the fine folks here at stackoverflow for help. I am working on a design for a blog for a friend of mine, and I'm working in HTML5. I am trying to get the width of the page to span the width of an iPad. So, in my document head, I have the following: <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0, maximum-scale=1.0"> Now, if you go to the index page, on an iPad, it looks just fine. The width of the page spans the width of the iPad in portrait mode, as I expect it to: http://www.alanreuterart.com/femmegamers/index.html It also looks fine on any individual blog posts as well. However, on the "about" and "join" pages, the width does not do this. It's actually overflowing past the length of the iPad to the right. View the following page on an iPad to see what I mean: http://www.alanreuterart.com/femmegamers/about.html I've tried everything. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to get it those two pages to correctly span the device width of the iPad. One important note, though: before anyone tells me to set my viewport width to 960, I cannot do that because the pages have media queries in them to convert to a mobile layout for the iPhone and other mobile phones. • Downloading javascript Without Blocking

  The context: My question relates to improving web-page loading performance, and in particular the effect that javascript has on page-loading (resources/elements below the script are blocked from downloading/rendering). This problem is usually avoided/mitigated by placing the scripts at the bottom (eg, just before the tag). The code i am looking at is for web analytics. Placing it at the bottom reduces its accuracy; and because this script has no effect on the page's content, ie, it's not re-writing any part of the page--i want to move it inside the head. Just how to do that without ruining page-loading performance is the crux. From my research, i've found six techniques (w/ support among all or most of the major browsers) for downloading scripts so that they don't block down-page content from loading/rendering: (i) XHR + eval(); (ii) XHR + 'inject'; (iii) download the HTML-wrapped script as in iFrame; (iv) setting the script tag's 'async' flag to 'TRUE' (HTML 5 only); (v) setting the script tag's 'defer' attribute; and (vi) 'Script DOM Element'. It's the last of these i don't understand. The javascript to implement the pattern (vi) is: (function() { var q1 = document.createElement('script'); q1.src = 'http://www.my_site.com/q1.js' document.documentElement.firstChild.appendChild(q1) })(); Seems simple enough: inside this anonymous function, a script element is created, its 'src' element is set to it's location, then the script element is added to the DOM. But while each line is clear, it's still not clear to me how exactly this pattern allows script loading without blocking down-page elements/resources from rendering/loading?

  I need to add "annotations" to existing HTML documents - best in the form of string property values I can read & write by name. Apparently (to me), meta elements in the header seem to be the common way - i.e. adding/modifying elements like <head> <meta name="unique-id_property-name" content="property-value"/> ... </head> Question 1: Ist that "acceptable" / ok, or is there a better way to add meta data? I have a little previous experience with getting/mut(il)ating HTML contents through the document in an web browser control. For this task, I've already loaded the HTML document into a HTMLDocument object, but I'm not sure how to go on: // what I have IHTMLDocument2Ptr doc; doc.CreateInstance(__uuidof(HTMLDocument)); IPersistFile pf = doc; pf->Load(fileName, STGM_READ); // everything ok until here Questions 2: Should I be using anything else than HTMLDocument? Questions 3..N: How do I get the head element? How do I get the value of a meta element with a given name? How do I set the value of a meta element (adding the item if and only if it doesn't exist yet)? doc->all returns a collection of all tags, which I can enumerate even though count returns 0. I could scan that for head, then scan that for all meta where the name starts with a certain string, etc. - but this feels very clumsy.

• ASP.net site looks completely different on IE, Firefox, and Chrome; why?

  I'm doing css for a website. I send the html and css to a guy, he puts it into ASP.net. The problem is that the transfer didn't end well for my code and it needs some fixing. The problem is that when I look at it in Chrome, or Firefox, or IE8, I get three completely different renderings. I spent a good amount of time trying to fix a drop-down menu that is supposed to appear while hovering over a link. The one he had in place from ASP.net worked in IE, kinda worked in Firefox, and was completely broken in Chrome (I haven't tested Safari or Opera.) Just getting it to look basically the same in firefox and chrome was a struggle. The html source is showing me two completely different pages as well. Does anyone have experience with this? I know nothing of ASP.net, and it seems like the guy is modifying my layout with a wsyiwyg (I found tables used in random places, which I did not put there.) Faced with this, what is my best option? Is this fixable, or am I in over my head?

• jQuery cycle floats on top of other content

  I tried to replace my Flash video with a jQuery cycle. The cycle works, but the images will not stay in the editable region I placed them in. Instead they are floating on top of other content. Any ideas? This is happening on the home page of massageeducator.com There are 2 cycles on the page. “Slideshow1” and “slideshow2”. “slideshow1” works perfectly. The only thing I did differently was set up “slideshow2” as a library item since it will appear on every page, but added function code manually. I tried adding code and images via the template and had the same issue. I also tried adding both the function code and slideshow to each page instead of library item - same problem. I have both slide shows pointing to the same jquery.cycle.lite.1.0.js. Should I rename this .js file and have each cycle point to a different file? I am new to jQuery so any help is appreciated. I can't seem to post my code due to the spam filters in here!

So my code goes like this: <h3><a href="#">Test </a></h3> <div class="accordion" style="background-color:yellow;"> <div class="test_1"> my first dynamic content div </div> <div class="test_2"> my second dynamic content div </div> </div> So you see the H3 that's the 'accordian', if i click on that the div accordion opens with inside 2 seperate divs. That all works but the positioning of my 2 divs inside the accordion div fails. I should like to get them UNDER eachother, but both divs got generated dynamically what means that i don't know the size of the first div (test_1) so i can't position on pixels. I already tried with some br tags etc but nothing seems to work. Is there a way to do this in css maybe with float or something or should it be done inside the html ? ANy other ideas? Regards, T
