• how to combine changes tracked from several documents

  I tried to search the solution in internet, but found nothing, is there anyone who can help me? For my application, there is one document (Microsoft word), and this document is reviewed by several people in the "Track changes" mode, so the input to my application is the original document and the reviewed documents with changes (like insert/delete/comments). By this link , I know how to extract all the changes from the reviewed documents. what i want is to combine all the changes from all the reviewed documents into ONE document, and make all the changes "accepted", so the output of my application is one modified Microsoft document with all the changes (delete/insert/comment) accepted. My problem is that I don't know how to combine the changes from several documents into one single document. Anyone has an idea how to do this? Thank you very much in advance.

• Is it possible to make this Flex/Flash application safe?

  I'm back with another Flex/Flash security question. I've already received some help from the community on this topic, but I'm still not quite sure this is the best way to do. Here's the thing. A flex web app, a lot of users (1000+), custom configuration of the application depending of the user group. Can I make this thing safe... or safer. For the moment, when a user comes to the application, there is only one configuration possible, but for the next version we've implented a multi-configuration protocol, this way : 1. The user connect to Default.aspx, server code process the windows credentials (whe are on intranet) and give the correct xml configuration file. 2. The flex app loads with the xml conf file as a flashvar and then the app 'builds' itself with the content of the xml file. As we know, since this is a flex application the swf is downloaded on the client computer and the xml file too. If more than one user connects to the app, from the same computer, the can possibly see the other xml file in the windows temp folder. The current directory of the application looks that way : Web site |-> default.aspx |-> index.swf |-> configAdmin.xml |-> configUserType1.xml |-> configUserType2.xml |-> com |-> a lot of swf and xml files I was first thinking making another directory (without read access for the client) containing all the configurations xml files, picking the right one, copying it to the client and deleting it afterwards. But it seems like I must let know the user know when downloading/deleting content on it's computer... I'm running out of ideas, so I hope you have some great ones. It's there are some design flaws (in the way the app is build, not in Flash :p) please share. I'm always looking forward to improve. Thanks Update : In browser Flash/Flex (without AIR that is) doesn't allow deleting file localy silently (on the client computer, where the application is). It's also not yet possible to get session data.

• Save information from MS crash reporter?

  On Windows XP when a process crashes, we get a dialog box with a link: "To view technical information about the error report, click here." The "click here" link brings up a whole lot of information in a window, but no obvious way to save it to a file. Is there a way? It would be very nice to be able to send that data to several different external vendors we're working with. The only other option I see in the dialog box is to send it to Microsoft, but this crash is likely not Microsoft's fault and there is no reason to send it to them.

• Is there a unique computer identifier that can be used reliably even in a virtual machine?

  I'm writing a small client program to be run on a terminal server. I'm looking for a way to make sure that it will only run on this server and in case it is removed from the server it will not function. I understand that there is no perfect way of securing it to make it impossible to ran on other platforms, but I want to make it hard enough to prevent 95% of people to try anything. The other 5% who can hack it is not my concern. I was looking at different Unique Identifiers like Processor ID, Windows Product ID, Computer GUID and other UIs. Because the terminal server is a virtual machine, I cannot locate anything that is completely unique to this machine. Any ideas on what I should look into to make this 95% secure. I do not have time or the need to make it as secure as possible because it will defeat the purpose of the application itself. I do not want to user MAC address. Even though it is unique to each machine it can be easily spoofed. As far as Microsoft Product ID, because our system team clones VM servers and we use corporate volume key, I found already two servers that I have access to that have same Product ID Number. I have no Idea how many others out there that have same Product ID By 95% and 5% I just simply wanted to illustrate how far i want to go with securing this software. I do not have precise statistics on how many people can do what. I believe I might need to change my approach and instead of trying to identify the machine, I will be better off by identifying the user and create group based permission for access to this software.

• How to generate a random unique string with more than 2^30 combination. I also wanted to reverse the process. Is this possible?

  I have a string which contains 3 elements: a 3 digit code (example: SIN, ABD, SMS, etc) a 1 digit code type (example: 1, 2, 3, etc) a 3 digit number (example: 500, 123, 345) Example string: SIN1500, ABD2123, SMS3345, etc.. I wanted to generate a UNIQUE 10 digit alphanumeric and case sensitive string (only 0-9/a-z/A-Z is allowed), with more than 2^30 (about 1 billion) unique combination per string supplied. The generated code must have a particular algorithm so that I can reverse the process. He started with a brief introduction to the new MSDN subscriptions, the different versions of Visual Studio, and the full circle of application and solution integration for the new Team Foundation Server. I like the new structure of the MSDN subscriptions and the new options the Team Foundation Server offers! Quent continued his presentation with excellent information and demos of the Architecture Tools, focusing on Architecture Explorer and UML.   If you're like me, you have a hard time keeping up with all the technologies out there. The reality is there's too many new technologies (languages, methodologies,  tools, etc). One of the ways I try to keep up with everything is by using good ol' RSS feeds in conjunction with Google Reader. Google Reader is both an online aggregator of RSS feeds, and it also has a good companion app on Google Android. The nicest part of Google Reader for me is the "All Listings" view which gives me a reverse chronological view of ALL articles (mixed together) regardless of the actual RSS feed.  This way, I get to see the newest articles first.   Still working on getting a TeamCity build working (see my last post).  Latest exception is: C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v9.0\TeamData\Microsoft.Data.Schema.SqlTasks.targets(120, 5): error MSB4018: The "SqlDeployTask" task failed unexpectedly. If youre certain the account has the necessary permissions, but youre still getting the error, the problem may be that the account has never logged into the build server.  In this case, there wont be any entry in the HKCU hive in the registry, which the system is checking for permissions (see this thread).  The solution in this case is quite simple: log into the machine (once is enough) with the build server account.  Then, open Visual Studio (thanks Brendan for the answer in this thread). Summary Make sure the build service account has the necessary database permissions Make sure the account has logged into the server so it has the necessary registry hive info Make sure the account has run Visual Studio at least once so its settings are established In my case I went through all 3 of these steps before I resolved the problem. I've since run Update-Manager, run sudo apt-get updates, rebooted, tried the above script line manually, and still no change. I've just run sudo apt-get install -f and nothing seemed to change. It did mention that some packages were no longer needed and could be removed by apt-get autoremove, so I ran that. It removed a number of packages, so I reran the install command above. Still same problem of held broken packages. I just ran sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade Part of the response was; The following packages have been kept back: gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg I'm not sure what that means. I do know that it shows up in my Update-Manager and cannot be checked I then ran sudo dpkg --configure -a and then reran sudo apt-get -f install and the package was still not upgraded, though there was this very interesting comment; Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. "These machines are now on Domain where in we have no rights/control on the domain level GPO", we have local admi rights on these machines We have a requirement do set the "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" to "NOT Configured" or "OFF "on these machines In gpedit.msc if we manually go to "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" after enabling Windows Firewall Services then can Clear the settings Do do the same manually on all machines is extra effort Changing values in registry will get reverted on machine restart as its getting applied from local GPO Also using GPMC can connect to remote computer and can manually or using wfw file we can make it not configured but we are looking for a script or a less effort method to accomplish this Please suggest NB: CIA has already reported similar issue//How do I turn off Windows 7 Firewall via script or through automation?// , but doing netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state off on already deployed machines did not make change (FW service on all machine is disabled in GOLd image)// Thanks and Regards Jose

  I'm using Windows 7 on my HP ProBook 4250s. The problem I face is that my system halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds. These jerks are not letting me concentrate or work properly.   The example used in the question pass bare minimum data to a function touches on the best way to determine whether the user is an administrator or not. One common answer was: user.isAdmin() This prompted a comment which was repeated several times and up-voted many times: A user shouldn't decide whether it is an Admin or not. The Privileges or Security system should. Something being tightly coupled to a class doesn't mean it is a good idea to make it part of that class. I replied, The user isn't deciding anything. The User object/table stores data about each user. Actual users don't get to change everything about themselves. But this was not productive. Clearly there is an underlying difference of perspective which is making communication difficult. Can someone explain to me why user.isAdmin() is bad, and paint a brief sketch of what it looks like done "right"? Really, I fail to see the advantage of separating security from the system that it protects. Any security text will say that security needs to be designed into a system from the beginning and considered at every stage of development, deployment, maintenance, and even end-of-life. It is not something that can be bolted on the side. But 17 up-votes so far on this comment says that I'm missing something important.

  I am attempting to compile/run a sample WCF application from Juval Lowy's website (author of Programming WCF Services & founder of IDesign). The application is an example of a publish/subscribe 'traffic-light' application that requires using VS 2010/.Net 4. This is my first attempt at using anything other than VS 2008/Net 3.5.
