• Pros/Cons of document based database vs relational database

  I've been trying to see if I can accomplish some requirements with a document based database, in this case CouchDB. Two generic requirements: CRUD of entities with some fields which have unique index on it ecommerce web app like eBay (better description here). And I'm begining to think that a Document-based database isn't the best choice to address these requirements. Furthermore, I can´t imagine a use for a Document based database (maybe my imagination is too little). Can you explain me if I am asking pears to an elm when I try to use a Document based database for this requirements?

• iphone tab bar controller and core data.

  Ok bit of a newbie type question. I want to use Core Data, together with Tab and Navigation controllers. In XCode if I create a Navigation Based Application I get the option to choose Core Data. Whereas If I create a Tab Bar Application I don't get the choice. I understand that Tab Bars display view controllers so it kinda makes sense. However given that by default it sticks the basic Core Data code in the Application delegate I don't see why this isn't offered. At the moment I'm creating the two projects and cutting and pasting between them. Does this omission in XCode seem weird to you? Is it some sort of oversight? Thanks, Matt

• Seed data for grails application

  Hello, What is the best way to load seed (initial or test) data into grails application. I'm considering 3 options 1. Putting everything in *BootStrap.groovy files. This is tedious if the domain classes and test data are many. 2. Write custom functionality to load it through xml. May not be too difficult with the excellent xml support by groovy, but lot of switch statements for different domain classes. 3. Use Liquibase LoadData api. I see you can load the data fairly easy from csv files. Choice 3 seems the easiest. But, I'm not familiar with Liquibase. Is it good in this scenario, or only used for migration, db changes etc. If anyone could provide a better sol, or point to an example with Liquibase, it would be great help.. thanks...

• How is Entity Framework 4's POCO support compared to NHibernate?

  Just wondering if anyone has had any experience using Entity Framework 4's POCO support and how it stands up compared to NHibernate. If they're the same, I'd be very interested in making Entity Framework 4 my ORM of choice if only because it would: Support both data first AND object first development Have a robust LINQ provider Be easier to pitch to clients (since it's developed by Microsoft) Come baked into the .NET framework rather than requiring 8 dlls to get up and running In other words, are there any major shortcomings to EF4? Does it support all of the basic functionality NHibernate supports (lazy-loading, eager-loading, 1st level caching, etc.) or is it still rough around the edges? Is the syntax for setting up the mappings as easy as NHibernate and/or Fluent NHibernate? Edit: Please don't bring up the vote of no confidence. That was ages ago and dealt with some serious shortcomings of EF1 that really don't seem to apply anymore to EF4.

  I need some guidance on how to add a validation method to the jquery validate plugin. I've gathered that i need to use the plugin's addMethod() function, but how exactly to have it do what i need... Here i am! My form 's first question is a radio input choice. Each radio input, if selected, shows a sub-question of several checkboxes. What i would like my validation to do is: - make sure one radio input is selected - make sure at least one checkbox pertaining to the radio input is selected. Basically, out of the validate plugin's own logic, i would count the selector's length, and if there isn't any, return the error message. Something like this: var weekSelected = ($('input.seasonSelector:checked input.weekSelector:checked',form).length > 0); if(!weekSelected){ return 'Please select a week inside that season'; } How to turn that into a validate plugin method ?

• Python - Check if numbers in list are factors of a number

  Hey, I have a list of numbers (integers) (say, from 1 to 10). They're not necessarily consecutive, but they are in ascending order. I've prompted the user multiple times to enter a choice of the available numbers. When that number is entered, it is removed from the list along with any of its factors that may be there. I've prevented the user from selecting prime numbers. However, at some point in time, there may be non-prime numbers there, which have no factors remaining. I'm relatively new to Python, so I'm having trouble implementing: Checking if the number selected has no factors remaining (even if it is not prime). Checking if only prime numbers remain, or numbers without factors. I'm thinking of using for statements, but I'm not sure exactly how to implement them. Can anyone offer advice, or code? Thanks in advance... PS. In case anyone's wondering, I'm doing an implementation of the game of Taxman in Python.

• External XMPP component - Anyone know a Tutorial or Open Source Example please?

  Hi All, I want to run an XMPP server (Openfire) and register an external component to handle the messages it will recieve (using the Whack library). The external component will run my game logic and I will be using XMPP to send player moves to the server and status updates in the other direction. The bonus with XMPP is that we get built in chat for free. The trouble is, although Ignite look fairly established, I can't find a tutorial on how to write, register and debug an External XMPP component written with Whack, there are very few in general for that matter. I am not invested in either the server implementation or the External Component library, java is just my language of choice. If I was to move to Erlang or Scala or something it would have to be a very simple in that language. A single tutorial or example would go a long way here, I just need an basic External XMPP component pretty please! Kind regards, Gavin

• Ria Services vs WCF Dataservices

  My Team are evaluation to a bigger Business portal. (Invoicing, Bookkeeping, Salaries.....) We are all used to work with DDD, O/R mappers with NHibernate as our first choice. We have chosen to work with CompositeWPF to keep modularity between all modules and part system in the business portal. Now we have evaluated Ria Services and are kind of disappointed how it works in a Data Oriented way, Data Oriented can be good in a service oriented scenario, but we feel that we can with an Object Oriented approach to, and we feel that we can get an application with less complexity with the OO approach than the DO approach. For example it doesn't allow Value Objects, Many-to-many relations, everything needs to have keys and so on. We haven't looked at WCF Data Services yet so our question is WCF Data Services our answere? Does it integrate good with Silverlight 4? Can we work with it in a OO manor?

I'm developing an application with Hibernate 3.5 and Spring 3.0 Pros: Good documentation Easy configuration and helpful logs Popularity - wide community Some extensions to JPA Some additional Tools - JBoss Tools for Eclipse, hbm2ddl, generating static metamodel etc... Cons: Bugs! (Sequences, collections etc...) Lots of reatures are doubled with "pure" Hibernate. There's a mess in legacy Hibernate and JPA annotations. I'm considering to switch to EclipseLink. What do You think ? Edit: I've tried EclipseLink and have very bad experiences. It seems like EclipseLink needs LoadTimeWeaver and likes to run on OSGi platform rather than simple Jetty or Tomcat environment. I just don't have time for all this configuration stuff.

  I am creating a basic animation for my iPhone app. I have a choice to make between 2 different types of animation. I can use this... • Event Capturing vs Event Bubbling

  I just wanted to get the general consensus on which is a better mode of event delegation in JS between bubbling and capturing. Now I understand that depending on a particular use-case, one might want to use capturing phase over bubbling or vice versa but I want to understand what delegation mode is preferred for most general cases and why (to me it seems bubbling mode). Or to put it in other words, is there a reason behind W3C addEventListener implementation to favor the bubbling mode. [capturing is initiated only when you specify the 3rd parameter and its true. However, you can forget that 3rd param and bubbling mode is kicked in] I looked up the JQuery's bind function to get an answer to my question and it seems it doesn't even support events in capture phase (it seems to me because of IE not support capturing mode). So looks like bubbling mode is the default choice but why?

  I have been asked to research the advantages/disadvantages the two application servers, but am new to the space and am having a terrible time finding an unbiased comparison of the two platforms. I understand that this is a broad question and I hate that I can't give a very specific use case (other than it will be an implementation in an organization with out a full time admin dedicated to management and it will be running in a mixed environment against JD Edwards/Oracle and SQLServer). Does anyone know of any (recently published) content that does a reasonable comparison or can any offer any insight into which might be the better choice and why. • Calling Oracle Function with "complex" return value from C#

  I have an Oracle function returning record defined in the package, so one can do: select a,b,c FROM my_function(...); Calling this oracle function from .NET is as simple as executing normal sql query. Unfortunately the function has to do updates now and when it is called like this Oracle complains that updates are not allowed within selects and that makes sense. So now I am left with the choice to change the function call or to split the function. Basically I have to get rid of the select in the function call and need something like this in C#: EXEC :var:= my_func(...); where the type of var is custom tuple defined in the package. I have already tried using ParameterDirection.ReturnValue without success. Does anyone have an idea?

  I'm new to Watir and I've having a little trouble getting logged in in my tests. I use authlogic as my authentication method of choice. When a User registers, they are sent an email with a confirmation link. Clicking this link confirms their account and they can then login. The issue I'm having is how do I confirm the User when using Watir? • Are document-oriented databases meant to replace relational databases?

  Recently I've been working a little with MongoDB and I have to say I really like it. However it is a completely different type of database then I am used. I've noticed that it is most definitely better for certain types of data, however for heavily normalized databases it might not be the best choice. It appears to me however that it can completely take the place of just about any relational database you may have and in most cases perform better, which is mind boggling. This leads me to ask a few questions: Are document-oriented databases have been developed to be the next generation of databases and basically replace relational databases completely? Is it possible that projects would be better off using both a document-oriented database and a relational database side by side for various data which is better suited for one or the other? If document-oriented databases are not meant to replace relational databases, then does anyone have an example of a database structure which would absolutely be better off in a relational database (or vice-versa)?

• How to find out exact version of iPhone SDK for conditional compilation?

  I'm looking for a macro that specified the exact version of the iPhone SDK used for compilation. This is needed because when compiling with (and only with) SDK 3.0, I need to add some additional code. __IPHONE_OS_VERSION_MIN_REQUIRED is not the right choice here, since it can be set by the user with parameter -mmacosx-version-min. For example, a user can compile with min version -mmacosx-version-min=3.0 in SDK 3.1, so a check for __IPHONE_OS_VERSION_MIN_REQUIRED == 30000 would be true, even if the user is compiling with SDK 3.1.   I think I might be misunderstanding the whole thing and I am looking for some programming wisdom. When faced with a programming challenge, I feel the most important question is "which programming paradigm(s) are better suited to handle it, and how to apply them". A distant second is "which language to use". Yet it seems that most of the programming related content I stumble upon on the Internet has it exactly backwards and focuses mostly on the language choice. An object-oriented solution is fundamentaly the same, whether it's implemented in c++, Java or PHP... So where is the paradigm centered content? Where is the "practical guide to programming paradigms and implementations" and other literature helping bringing real-world and programming concepts together? Note: I already know about "Programming Paradigms for Dummies: What Every Programmer Should Know" from Peter Van Roy.

• Mixing inheritance mapping strategies in NHibernate

  I have a rather large inheritance hierarchy in which some of the subclasses add very little and others add quite a bit. I don't want to map the entire hierarchy using either "table per class hierarchy" or "table per subclass" due to the size and complexity of the hierarchy. Ideally I'd like to mix mapping strategies such that portions of the hierarchy where the subclasses add very little are combined into a common table a la "table per class hierarchy" and subclasses that add a lot are broken out into a separate table. Using this approach, I would expect to have 2 or 3 tables with very little wasted space instead of either 1 table with lots of fields that don't apply to most of the objects, or 20+ tables, several of which would have only a couple of columns. In the NHibernate Reference Documentation version 2.1.0, I found section 8.1.4 "Mixing table per class hierarchy with table per subclass". This approach switches strategies partway down the hierarchy by using: ... <subclass ...> <join ...> <property ...> ... </join> </subclass> ... This is great in theory. In practice, though, I found that the schema was too restrictive in what was allowed inside the "join" element for me to be able to accomplish what I needed. • OS X firewall popup about growlnotify keeps popping up

  I have autotest setup with growlnotify using growl_glue (version 1.0.7): require 'growl_glue' GrowlGlue::Autotest.initialize do |config| config.notification :use_network_notifications => true end growl version is 1.2 each time autotest runs and displays the notification growl popup I also get an OS X firewall popup asking Do you want the application "growlnotify" to accept incoming network connections? I tried answering deny and allow but it still keeps popping up. the deny/allow choice is properly reflected in System Preferences - Security - Firewall - 'application access list', but it still asks every time. update I ended up using autotest-growl gem instead of the growl_glue. it fixed the problem, it was probably related to how growl_glue was calling growlnotify.

• Sparse O(1) array with indices being consecutive products

  Hello, I'd like to pre-calculate an array of values of some unary function f. I know that I'll only need the values for f(x) where x is of the form of a*b, where both a and b are integers in range 0..N. The obvious time-optimized choice is just to make an array of size N*N and just pre-calculate just the elements which I'm going to read later. For f(a*b), I'd just check and set tab[a*b]. This is the fastest method possible - however, this is going to take a lot of space as there are lots of indices in this array (starting with N+1) which will never by touched. Another solution is to make a simple tree map... but this slows down the lookup itself very heavily by introducing lots of branches. No. I wonder - is there any solution to make such an array less sparse and smaller, but still quick branchless O(1) in lookup?

• C or C++ to write a compiler?

  I want to write a compiler for a custom markup language, I want to get optimum performance and I also want to have a good scalable design. Multi-paradigm programming language (C++) is more suitable to implement modern design patterns, but I think that will degrade performance a little bit (think of RTTI for example) which more or less might make C a better choice. I wonder what is the best language (C, C++ or even objective C) if someone wants to create a modern compiler (in the sense of complying to modern software engineering principles as a software) that is fast, efficient, and well designed.

• Hide Address bar for Xpages Mobile Web Application on Ipad (iOS5) and Mobile safari (v5.1)

  With reference to the question I asked couple of days back, it seems to me that address bar cannot be hidden from a xpages mobile web application when it is launched from a href link. Choice is limited to href as "location.assign" or any javascript will not work on mails accessed by lotus traveller. I tried almost 20 different variations published by other experts to hide address bar and none seems to work. Am I wrong in stating that "it is not possible to hide address bar in Xpages mobile web application on ipad when not launched from home screen"?
