• ASP.NET MVC 3 (C#) Software Architecture

  I am starting on a relatively large and ambitious ASP.NET MVC 3 project and just thinking about the best way to organize my code. The project is basically going to be a general management system that will be capable of supporting any type management system whether it be a blogging system, cms, reservation system, wikis, forums, project management system, etc…, each of them being just a separate 'module'. You can read more about it on my blog posted here : http://www.ryanzec.com/index.php/blog/details/8 (forgive me, the style of the site kinda sucks). For those who don't want to read the long blog post the basic idea is that the core system itself is nothing more than a users system with an admin interface to manage the users system. Then you just add on module as you need them and the module I will be creating is a simple blog post to test it out before I move on to the big module which is a project management system. Now I am just trying to think of the best way to structure this so that it is easy for users to add in there own modules but easy for me to update to core system without worrying about the user modifying the core code. I think the ideal way would be to have a number of core projects that user is specifically told not to modify otherwise the system may become unstable and future updates would not work. When the user wants to add in there own modules, they would just add in a new project (or multiple projects). The thing is I am not sure that it is even possible to use multiple projects all with their own controllers, razor view template, css, javascript, etc... in one web application. Ideally each module would have some of it own razor view templates, css, javascript, image files and also need access to some of the core razor view templates, css, javascript, image files which would is in a separate project. It is possible to have 1 web application run off of controllers, razor view templates, css, javascript, image files that are store in multiple projects? Is there a better was to structure this to allow the user to easily add in module with having to modify the core code?

• Tip: Keeping the ADF Mobile PDF Guide up to date

  This is a little tip for customers using Oracle's ADF Mobile. If you're like me, it's possible you don't rely on the online HTML version of the Mobile Developer's Guide for ADF, but rather download a PDF version of the file to use locally (look to the "PDF" link to the top right of the guide).  For me the convenience of the PDF is it's faster, I can search the whole document easily, I can split read the document across two pages on my home monitor, if I lose my internet connection the document is still available, and it's easy to read on my iPad (especially on long haul flights to the US across the Pacific where there is no internet connection!). The trigger point for me to download the Oracle PDF documentation has always been on a new point release of JDeveloper.  However in the case of ADF Mobile, as an extension to JDeveloper it is releasing at a much faster and independent schedule to JDeveloper and this includes updates to the documentation. As such the 11.1.2.4.0 ADF Mobile PDF guide you have locally might be out of date and you should take the opportunity to download the latest version.  This is also particularly important for ADF Mobile as not only are many new features being added for each release and included in the new documentation, but the guide is under rapid improvement to clarify much of what has been written to date.  Our documentation teams are super responsive to suggestions on how to improve the guides and this often shows per point release. How do you tell you've the latest guide? Look to the document part number which right now is "E24475-03".  This is a unique ID per release for the document, the first part being the document number, and the part after the dash the revision number.  If the website document number has a higher revision number, time to download a new up to date PDF. • Which Ubuntu linux kernel tree matches my installed kernel?

  Answering a recent question, and before that, trying to see if a patch which is fundamental for my machine had been included in a kernel release, I have found the following problem: How can I match the kernel version I have for my kernel, which is [:~] % uname -a Linux samsung-romano 3.13.0-29-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 4 21:00:20 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux with the exact kernel source, which I suppose should be stored in http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/linux.git;a=summary? In that page there are quite a lot of tags, for example: But none of them correspond to 3.13.0-29 which is my running kernel right now. The mapping should be in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Dev/ExtendedStable, where it is said that the 3.13 Ubuntu kernel is based on 3.13.11 --- I think. But from there to finding the tree I have installed is not straightforward. Notice: I know I can install the kernel source corresponding with my installed kernel. But I do not want to install them; I would like ti have a pointer to the git tree to be able to browse it online (and check for commits, patches, etc.). The best options seems to go to linux3.13-y.review or linux3.13-y.queue, but I am unable to find where this tree are marked for the release - if I understand well the policy, in -review the patches are accumulated for testing, and in -queue accumulated for the next minor release/update --- but I am unable to find the exact release tree. I mean, a tag equivalent to 3.13.0-29 was cut here.

• Server Setups for Agencies [closed]

  We are considering consolidating our server administration by cutting down on the number of systems we currently use to manage all our websites(~65 websites). Currently we have a testing server and 3 production servers. (2 - cherokee(linode), 1 - apache (mt)) We don't have a dedicated server admin, so I am stuck with managing all these servers, and as a developer, I don't want to deal with all the server hassle. So my main goal is to cut down on the time spent messing with the servers. We have looked at Pagoda Box and AppFog as possibilities. I am not sure if Pagoda Box would be cost effective. With 65+ websites we may end up paying anywhere from 0 to $50+ per website per month. Right now we page about $250 per month for the 4 VPS servers mentioned above. We already use Capistrano for deployment. I have the opportunity to completely overhaul the entire setup and I would like some feedback on where you found your information for large scale server management or how you currently do it. Articles are welcome. In summary: What is new (past 2 years) in simple server management arena? If you work at an agency or have had agency experience, how do/did you manage your sites? a. What is the level of effort for SSL, new site setup, database management, and extension management. b. How did you handle datacenter outages. Anyone with Pagoda Box experience, do you like it and did you have problems with Wordpress, Cakephp, Drupal, Expression Engine or Magento? a. Is it expensive for you? b. How has server uptime been? • iphone Dev - activity indicator with NSThread not working on Nav controller table view

  I really can't get this to work, basically when my JSON feeds loads I want the indicator to show, then hide when it's stopped. It loads top level menu items 1st "Publishing, Broadcasting, Marketing Services", then when Broadcasting is selected it loads a feed using the JSON framework hosted on Google. Round this load I call startIndicator and stopIndicator using the NSThread. • How to capture live camera frames in RGB with DirectShow

  I'm implementing live video capture through DirectShow for live processing and display. (Augmented Reality app). I can access the pixels easily enough, but it seems I can't get the SampleGrabber to provide RGB data. The device (an iSight -- running VC++ Express in VMWare) only reports MEDIASUBTYPE_YUY2. After extensive Googling, I still can't figure out whether DirectShow is supposed to provide built-in color space conversion for this sort of thing. Some sites report that there is no YUV<-RGB conversion built in, others report that you just have to call SetMediaType on your ISampleGrabber with an RGB subtype. Any advice is greatly appreciated, I'm going nuts on this one. Code provided below. • SPARC T3-1 Record Results Running JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Day in the Life Benchmark with Added Batch Component

  Using Oracle's SPARC T3-1 server for the application tier and Oracle's SPARC Enterprise M3000 server for the database tier, a world record result was produced running the Oracle's JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications Day in the Life benchmark run concurrently with a batch workload. The SPARC T3-1 server based result has 25% better performance than the IBM Power 750 POWER7 server even though the IBM result did not include running a batch component. The SPARC T3-1 server based result has 25% better space/performance than the IBM Power 750 POWER7 server as measured by the online component. The SPARC T3-1 server based result is 5x faster than the x86-based IBM x3650 M2 server system when executing the online component of the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0.1 Day in the Life benchmark. The IBM result did not include a batch component. The SPARC T3-1 server based result has 2.5x better space/performance than the x86-based IBM x3650 M2 server as measured by the online component. The combination of SPARC T3-1 and SPARC Enterprise M3000 servers delivered a Day in the Life benchmark result of 5000 online users with 0.875 seconds of average transaction response time running concurrently with 19 Universal Batch Engine (UBE) processes at 10 UBEs/minute. The solution exercises various JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications while running Oracle WebLogic Server 11g Release 1 and Oracle Web Tier Utilities 11g HTTP server in Oracle Solaris Containers, together with the Oracle Database 11g Release 2. The SPARC T3-1 server showed that it could handle the additional workload of batch processing while maintaining the same number of online users for the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Day in the Life benchmark. This was accomplished with minimal loss in response time. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0.1 takes advantage of the large number of compute threads available in the SPARC T3-1 server at the application tier and achieves excellent response times. The SPARC T3-1 server consolidates the application/web tier of the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0.1 application using Oracle Solaris Containers. Containers provide flexibility, easier maintenance and better CPU utilization of the server leaving processing capacity for additional growth. A number of Oracle advanced technology and features were used to obtain this result: Oracle Solaris 10, Oracle Solaris Containers, Oracle Java Hotspot Server VM, Oracle WebLogic Server 11g Release 1, Oracle Web Tier Utilities 11g, Oracle Database 11g Release 2, the SPARC T3 and SPARC64 VII+ based servers. This is the first published result running both online and batch workload concurrently on the JD Enterprise Application server. No published results are available from IBM running the online component together with a batch workload. The 9.0.1 version of the benchmark saw some minor performance improvements relative to 9.0. When comparing between 9.0.1 and 9.0 results, the reader should take this into account when the difference between results is small. The UBE Queues are categorized as the QBATCHD, a single threaded queue for large UBEs, and the QPROCESS queue for short UBEs run concurrently. One of the Oracle Solaris Containers ran 4 Long UBEs, while another Container ran 15 short UBEs concurrently. The mixed size UBEs ran concurrently from the SPARC T3-1 server with the 5000 online users driven by the LoadRunner.   The latest Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0_65 (a.k.a. JRE 6u65-b14) and later updates on the JRE 6 codeline are now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12 for Windows-based desktop clients. Effects of new support dates on Java upgrades for EBS environments Support dates for the E-Business Suite and Java have changed.  Please review the sections below for more details: What does this mean for Oracle E-Business Suite users? Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JRE 7 for Windows desktop clients? Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JDK 7 for EBS application tier servers? All JRE 6 and 7 releases are certified with EBS upon release Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and later updates on the 1.6 codeline, and from JRE 7u10 and later updates on the JRE 7 codeline.  We test all new JRE 1.6 and JRE 7 releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all new JRE 1.6 and 7 releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team.  You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE 1.6 or JRE 7 releases to your EBS users' desktops. Worried about the 'mismanaged session cookie' issue? No need to worry -- it's fixed.  To recap: JRE releases 1.6.0_18 through 1.6.0_22 had issues with mismanaging session cookies that affected some users in some circumstances. The fix for those issues was first included in JRE 1.6.0_23. These fixes will carry forward and continue to be fixed in all future JRE releases.  In other words, if you wish to avoid the mismanaged session cookie issue, you should apply any release after JRE 1.6.0_22.
