• Remote sessions limited to two of many monitors?

  I have 3 monitors attached to my local PC arranged in a triangle. My goal is to have the top monitor display local content, while displaying a remote session across the bottom two. I have gotten this to work with span and RDP, but I am looking for a software that would allow the remote sessions to be restricted to a number of monitors of my choosing, rather than spanning. Does this software exist? I've looked extensively. If there is a hack or something that might do it, I'm totally down for getting my hands dirty.

• Avoid Windows Explorer to load complete executable file

  On Windows Vista, when browsing to a network folder containing executables, Windows Explorer seems to load all the files completely just to be able to show the executable icon (the resource monitor indicates loads of traffic during the loading of the directory) On XP only a part of the file is loaded. Is there a way to avoid the complete loading of these files? Note that disabling my anti virus does not help. Update: This only happens with for executable linked with /SWAPRUN:NET. Microsoft confirmed this as a bug in Vista, but they seem not very eager to fix this.

• My webcam just came on "out of the blue"

  I have a Microsoft LifeCam HD sitting atop my monitor. Today, completely out of the blue, its light came on -- I was simply browsing the web (in Chrome) when it happened. After about 5 minutes the webcam turned off. Naturally, I immediately suspected my ex-wife (when in doubt, I always suspect her), but she isn't computer savvy enough. I looked over the process list and didn't see anything suspicious. I am running a couple of open source projects and free apps (e.g., greenshot, powermenu, supertray), but I've had them for years. Autoruns reports nothing suspicious in the startup and neither does Windows Defender. Anyways, what could it be? What should I look at next?

• Monitoring File I/O on file Server.

  Is there a way to monitoring the file I/O on my file server. I want to gather some metrics on my current file system. I am running an old windows 2003 file server and I am planning on moving to a new file server running either windows server 2008 or 2012. I want to use these metrics and get a new file server that improve file I/O and access. Can some please advise me to what is the best way to monitor file access and get file I/O information so I can upgrade to a better file server.

• Can you resize all mac windows at once? (e.g. when docking)

  I've recently bought a Henge Dock, and like the ability to plug my MacBook in and instantly reconnect to all my peripherals (external monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.). The only problem is that when I dock or undock, all of my windows are left at the wrong size (either too big or too small) and I have to manually resize them, one by one. Not the end of the world, but ... isn't there an easier way? I've seen Cinch and Sizeup, but they seem to only work on one window (the current app). I looked at the Automator as a possible way to do this, but it didn't seem to have any window operations. I also tried the AppleScript listed here, but it put the windows in wacky places.

• Web map services displaying poorly

  Web map services no longer display correctly in ArcGIS and Google Earth - no one else on network is experiencing these. Using windows 7 OS. These problem began abruptly (1 day they were working, the next they were not). Specific problems include not displaying at all; correct display on 10% of the monitor and repeating lines of coloured squiggles and text on the remaining 90%; and small, widely spaced, pixels in place of colour fill. • Nagios service active only when other service is failing

  Is is possible to define service to be active only the times while other service is failing? Consider following example: 2 hosts available: HostA (primary) and HostB (backup). Nagios service, which monitors amount of active connections to the host: gives OK when amount of connections to host 0 gives FAILURE when amount of connections to host = 0 If setup nagios service to monitor both hosts: HostA and HostB - it will give me OK for HostA (while it is primary and all connections normally goes to it) and FAIL for HostB (while it is backup and will receive no connections while HostA is alive). Can I make the nagios service for HostB somehow depend on sevice of HostA and give no failures (or maybe be inactive) up to the moment the service of HostA starts failing?

• Started an application through SSH, command line now gone, what happens next?

  Context: This is a very basic question Using Putty and SSH for the first time to do some serious server setup and run into the situation where I have started a process that I do not want to stop. The process is the gunicorn WSGI HTTP Server (running on Centos 6.3). The command I used to start the process is (as per their Quick Start): gunicorn -w 4 myapp:app At this point in the work session, I have lost the command prompt. This must be such a non-issue that it doesn't even enter into an experienced user's consciousness. But unfortunately at my level of experience, I am left with several fundamental questions: Does the fact that I have lost the command prompt mean that the process is still running? How do I get back to the command prompt without killing the process? How do I come back and monitor the process later? How do I eventually kill the process? Any help is appreciated, thanks so much!

It's an open source network gateway (their term). Essentially, it can run a plethora of things that you may otherwise end up buying another appliance for: Web filtering logging mail spam filtering phishing monitor spyware blocking VPN You name it, it's all there. Best of all, it's mostly free. A few appliances have annual costs due to inherent licensing or subscription costs. If you are looking for a new network perimeter device, definitely check it out. The underlying OS doesn't matter, because it's the application we want to praise, not the OS beneath it.

• What can cause a black or blank screen when pressing logout or switch user in windows 7

  The situation I have here is related to a brand new dell machine with a GTX260 video card. Put simply after one user logs in when that user either 'switch users' or 'logs out' windows goes to a black/blank screen. The TV screen that is used with this computer previously functioned fine with fast user switching on an XP machine. The new computer is windows 7. The TV is not outputting any error messages like 'no signal' or anything else that would be displayed if the computer was off. You can fix the problem by cycling the input on television, after cycling the input the welcome screen appears as normal. What I want to know is what on earth is windows doing that would cause the video card to stop sending the same signal to the monitor when the user logs off or switches users. I mean as far as I can tell the resolution is identical between windows and the welcome screen. Or perhaps if somebody has experienced this before a fix would be great too.

• Parallelism on two duo-core processor system

  I wrote a Java program that draw the Mandelbrot image. To make it interesting, I divided the for loop that calculates the color of each pixel into 2 halves; each half will be executed as a thread thus parallelizing the task. On a two core one cpu system, the performance of using two thread approach vs just one main thread is nearly two fold. My question is on a two dual-core processor system, will the parallelized task be split among different processor instead of just utilize the two core on one processor? I suppose the former scenario will be slower than the latter one simply because the latency of communicating between 2 CPU over the motherboard wires. Any ideas? Thanks

• Limiting memory usage and mimimizing swap thrashing on Unix / Linux

  I have a few machines that I machine that I use for running large numbers of jobs where I try to limit the number of jobs so as not to exceed the available RAM of the machine. Occasionally I mis-estimate how much memory some of the jobs will take, and the machine starts thrashing the swap file. I resolve this by sending the kill -s STOP to one of the jobs so that it can get swapped out. Does anyone know of a utility that will monitor a server for processes by a specific name, and then pause the one with the smallest memory footprint is the total memory consumption reaches a desired threshold so that the larger ones can run and complete with a minimum of swap file thrashing? Paused processes then need to be resumed once some existing processes have completed.

• Can Remote Desktop connect only 2 monitors when the client has 3 or 4 monitors connected?

  I have three monitors (all 1920x1200) connected to my desktop and I would like to RDP into another computer (running Windows Server 2003) and use only two of my three monitors. The main monitor is used for notification from the LAN like email, build status, etc. I've tried modifying the .rdp file to have a higher resolution (i.e. 3840x1200 ) which sort of works but the bits per pixel goes down to 8 and you have to manually resize the window which means that you need to change it to around 3840x1150. If I supply /span to the commandline it gives me a bit more than 3840 spanned across the three monitors (is there perhaps a limitation of say 4096 for the maximum resolution?). WORKAROUND: Connect twice to the same computer.   I'm building a dml file that first deletes records that may be in the table, then inserts records. Example: DELETE from foo where field1='bar'; DELETE from foo where fields1='bazz'; INSERT ALL INTO foo(field1, field2) values ('bar', 'x') INTO foo(field1, field2) values ('bazz', 'y') SELECT * from DUAL; When I run the insert statement by itself, it runs fine. When I run the deletes, only the last delete runs. Also, it seems to be necessary to end the multiple insert with the select, is that so? If so, why is that necessary? In the past, when using MySQL, I could just list multiple delete and insert statements, all individually ending with a semicolon, and it would run fine.

  Do anyone knows any kind of apps or services for "taking care of servers"? (besides managed servers) There are hundreds of ways your server or application can stop working properly. Small things are easy to miss but usually easy to fix. Log overgrouth, configuration issues, etc. Of course there are best practice checklists, but its not a human task to check configuration best practices. Im sure it can be automated: some kind of agent can monitor all system settings, say what is right and wrong and give suggestions on how to make it right. I have to admin several servers and I need some kind of overview of overall situation. As well as a tool, that will fix problems automatically. Can you people suggest something?   I have a desktop background image (a picture) in a half-dozen different resolutions, that I'd like to deploy to a disparate collection of computers with different monitors and video cards and whatnot. Laptops, netbooks, desktops, widescreen, and even a couple of "tall" screens. I have images to cover most of the cases. I would like Windows 7 to correctly pick the correct desktop background image via group policy. Now, the logon screen is already done. The OEMBackground method is rather clever, and lets you copy files of different resolutions to the machine, and the logon app will calculate the aspect ratio of the monitor and match it to a file as closely as possible. Is there any way to have that functionality on the desktop background as well?

My local machine is an Intel core 2 duo laptop. Can I execute binaries compiled from source code on my machine directly on the above mentioned server? I am a newbie in this area. • Auto restart server if virtual memory is too low

  There are quite number of software running on my server: httpd, varnish, mysql, memcache, java.. Each of them is using a part of the virtual memory and varnish was configured to be allocated 3GB of memory to run. Due to high traffic load which is 100K, our server ran out of memory and oom-killer is invoked. We've to reboot the server. We have 8GB of Virtual Memory and due to some reason we cannot extend to larger memory. My question is - Is there any automated script, which will monitor how much virtual memory left and based upon certain criteria, lets say if 500MB left than restart the server automatically? I do know this is not the proper solution but we have to do it, otherwise we don't know when server will get OOM and by the time we know and restart the server, we lost our visiting users.

• Nvidia driver on Windows 7 causing black screen

  I have just installed Windows 7 on a desktop machine and for the first time ever have had a really tough time doing so, its normally a nice smooth install. This time I found that the monitor would simply go black after completing the installation. I tried reinstalling about 3 times and this did not help. After much searching I discovered that it was the nvidia drivers that were playing up with win 7, so i booted into safe mode, disabled the device, then rebooted to complete the installation. Windows 7 now works fine as long as the nvidia 9600 gt video card is disabled. The moment I enable it, the system requires a reboot and the screen will go black before even getting to the log in screen. I have tried downloading the latest driver and installing it manually, I have also tried uninstalling the device and allowing windows 7 to install it itself. Nothing seems to work. any clues?

• Ubuntu Wired network(ethernet does not work)

  It was working just fine, until the other day I yanked it out. The wireless works just fine on the same router. If I login to a windows 7 instance on this dual boot laptop then the ehternet works just fine. So it's not a hardware, cable or router issue. The card even gets an ip, but I can't connect to the internet. Here are the details from route, iptables, ifconfig, ping etc. Any ideas? • Why exactly is server side HTML rendering faster than client side?

  I am working on a large web site, and we're moving a lot of functionality to the client side (Require.js, Backbone and Handlebars stack). There are even discussions about possibly moving all rendering to the client side. But reading some articles, especially ones about Twitter moving away from client side rendering, which mention that server side is faster / more reliable, I begin to have questions. I don't understand how rendering fairly simple HTML widgets in JS from JSON and templates is a contemporary browser on a dual core CPU with 4-8 GB RAM is any slower than making dozens of includes in your server side app. Are there any actual real life benchmarking figures regarding this? Also, it seems like parsing HTML templates by server side templating engines can't be any faster than rendering same HTML code from a Handlebars template, especially if this is a precomp JS function?
