  • How do I use the information about exceptions a method throws in .NET in my code?

    For many methods in .NET, the exceptions they can potentially throw can be as many as 7-8 (one or two methods in XmlDocument, Load() being one I think, can throw this many exceptions). Does this mean I have to write 8 catch blocks to catch all of these exceptions (it is best practise to catch an exception with a specific exception block and not just a general catch block of type Exception). How do I use this information? Thanks

    In my reading on dynamic and static typing, I keep coming up against the assumption that statically typed languages are compiled, while dynamically typed languages are interpreted. I know that in general this is true, but I'm interested in the exceptions. I'd really like someone to not only give some examples of these exceptions, but try to explain why it was decided that these languages should work in this way.

    How many significant digits should I use when defining a double literal in Java? This is assuming that I am trying to represent a number with more significant figures than a double can hold. In Math.java I see 20 and 21: public static final double E = 2.7182818284590452354; public static final double PI = 3.14159265358979323846; This is more than the 15-17 significant digits provided by IEEE 754. So what's the general rule-of-thumb?

    [I'm working in Ruby, but my question is valid for other languages as well.] I have a Mechanize-driven application. The server I'm talking to sets a cookie using javascript (rather than standard set-cookie), so Mechanize doesn't catch the cookie. I need to pass that cookie back on the next GET request. The good news is that I already know the value of the cookie, but I don't know how to tell Mechanize to include it in my next GET request. Pointers or suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance. -ff

I want a short pseudocode to find an appropriate crawling frequency -- i do not want to crawl too often because the website may not have changed, and do not want to crawl too infrequently because index would then be out of date.     I am doing a PDO::exec command on multiple updates: $MyPdo->setAttribute(PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_USE_BUFFERED_QUERY,true); $MyPdo->exec("update t1 set f1=1;update t2 set f1=2"); I am doing it inside a transaction, and I keep getting: SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 2014 Cannot execute queries while other unbuffered queries are active. Consider using PDOStatement::fetchAll(). Alternatively, if your code is only ever going to run against mysql, you may enable query buffering by setting the PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_USE_BUFFERED_QUERY attribute. those are the only query/ies

  • How to safely use VSS when using a working directory on a thumb drive?

    I know putting code into VSS in general is as safe as putting money into a mutual fund run by Bernard Madoff, but I don't have the luxury of ditching it for subversion. That said, I need to be able to write code on two machines, I'm considering checking out code to a flash thumb drive. Anyone know in advance what I should/shouldn't do to avoid loss of work?   • WPF Application - Role Management Recommendations

    I have a WPF application with a WCF service layer and a SQL database. I now want to restrict elements of the application so that certain functions are only available to those users with a particular role. For example, you will only be able to navigate to the settings screen if you are an administrator. I would like a user to be a member of 1 or more authorisation groups and each authorisation group to have 1 or more roles associated. A long time ago I used AzMan (Authorisation Manager) to do a similar thing. Does anyone think that there are better approaches? Is AzMan "old news"? Alternatives? Thanks.

    How can I compile my python module into an executable, and distribute it in a way that doesn't require the user to download all the external Python packages that the module I wrote uses?   • List of valid characters for the fragment identifier in an URL?

    I'm using the fragment identifier to create a permalink for AJAX events in my web app similar to this guy. Something like: http://www.myapp.com/calendar#filter:year/2010/month/5 I've done quite a bit of searching but can't find a list of valid characters for the fragment idenitifer. The W3C spec doesn't offer anything. Do I need to encode the characters the same as the URL in has in general? There doesn't seem to be any good information on this anywhere.

  • Will HTML 5 kill Flash? Is it even worth my time to learn Flash?

    Apple is always in the news these days with "i" this and "i" that. One of the biggest beefs people have with Apple is the lack of Flash support. Last year I held the same belief, Apple's choice to exclude Flash support just seemed senseless. HTML 5 seems to have changed this though. One of the most popular users of Flash is YouTube, and they are already getting on the HTML 5 bandwagon (http://www.youtube.com/html5). Still, I am torn between the two technologies. What is your take? Is it better for a budding developer to learn Flash or should their efforts be devoted to HTML5?

  • PHP: Facebook stream.publish and outdated template bundles?

    Ok So I haven't tried messing with the facebook PHP API for months.. it's gross. Since template bundles are apparently now defunct, how can I publish a story into my users news feed for their friends? I've also already requested permissions. Edit: The issue seems to arise from requested permissions not being set for the user when They are granted. I can't tell what's actually deprecated or not. They link to tutorials 2-3 years old! if you have a problem with your iframe application reloading over and over and over try using $facebook-require_frame()
