  I know there are problems (and have been for quite some time) with the diNovo Edge keyboard. The solution could be found easily and often you can use the on-screen keyboard to fix it. Now I'm installing Ubuntu from scratch and the only keyboard I have is my diNovo, am I screwed? You are able to get to System Config during the install process and from there to Accessibility menu where you usually can start the on-screen keyboard. This doesn't work, no keyboard in sight... What if I can do some ninja copy-paste with the mouse?? Nope, no pasting allowed in the feilds: username, password, etc. Is there a chance I can fix this somehow within the .iso file before I create the bootable USB drive I use to install from? Or do I have to buy a keyboard to be able to install Ubuntu?

• Cannot set a credential for principal 'sa'

  I was trying to change the SA password on my development server this morning and got an error. Msg 15535, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot set a credential for principal 'sa'. It was a little frustrating to get an error for a seemingly simple task but then agian maybe I screwed something up.  After doing a couple of searches i found a Microsoft KB (support.microsoft.com/kb/956177) "You receive an exception in SQL Server 2008 when you try to modify the properties of the SQL Server Administrator account by using SQL Server Management Studio".  It was for SQL 2008 but it worked for my SQL 2005 sp3 server just fine.  You have to click the Map to Credential check box but you don't have to add any credetials just click the OK button to complete and that's it.

• Registrar with good security, DNS hosting, and DNSSEC and IPv6 resolvers?

  I'm looking to move my domains away from GoDaddy, but I'm having a tough time finding anyone with comparable features at a (even remotely) similar price. I've looked at the usual suggestions (NameCheap, Gandi.net, etc.), but they all seem to lack many of the GoDaddy feature base. I'm looking for: DNSSEC IPv6 Resolvers (dig pdns01.domaincontrol.com AAAA; etc. ) SSL-Logins by default HTTP-only login cookies No stupid password restrictions Two-factor authentications No DNS record limits Rough DNS statistics (queries/day, etc.) Audit trails GoDaddy has all of these, except two-factor, for $3/month. See http://www.godaddy.com/domains/dns-hosting.aspx I can't seem to find any other registrar that supports even a few of these. Is there a registrar that offers comparable features? Or, barring that, a DNS hosting service that offers similar features? (AWS Route53 doesn't offer DNSSEC or IPv6)

• NX/SSH remote access with Remmina

  After many days and a lot of frustration, I managed to get freenx to work on my home server. I can connect to it with nomachine's linux client, but I want to use Remmina for this purpose. The problem is that I don't exactly know how to connect to a NX-server with the program. In the connection dialog, I've chosen SSH as the protocol, and I've correctly added the IP and port. Under "SSH Authentication" I've added my user name on the server, and I choose "identity file" and selected the ssh-key I generated (which works with nxclient). (When am I supposed to provide my password for the user on the server?) When I try to connect I get the message: SSH public key authentication failed: Public key file doesn't exist Why do I get this message? How shall I proceed correctly to get the authentication working? Thank you for your time!

• 2 Birds, 1 Stone: Enabling M2M and Mobility in Healthcare

  Jim Connors has created a video showcase of a comprehensive healthcare solution, connecting a mobile application directly to an embedded patient monitoring system. In the demo, Jim illustrates how you can easily build solutions on top of the Java embedded platform, using Oracle products like Berkeley DB and Database Mobile Server. Jim is running Apache Tomcat on an embedded device, using Berkeley DB as the data store. BDB is transparently linked to an Oracle Database backend using  Database Mobile Server. Information protection is important in healthcare, so it is worth pointing out that these products offer strong data encryption, for storage as well as transit. In his video, Jim does a great job of demystifying M2M. What's compelling about this demo is that uses a solution architecture that enterprise developers are already comfortable and familiar with: a Java apps server with a database backend. The additional pieces used to embed this solution are Oracle Berkeley DB and Database Mobile Server. It functions transparently, from the perspective of Java apps developers. This means that organizations who understand Java apps (basically everyone) can use this technology to develop embedded M2M products. The potential uses for this technology in healthcare alone are immense; any device that measures and records some aspect of the patient could be linked, securely and directly, to the medical records database. Breathing, circulation, other vitals, sensory perception, blood tests, x-rats or CAT scans. The list goes on and on. In this demo case, it's a testament to the power of the Java embedded platform that they are able to easily interface the device, called a Pulse Oximeter, with the web application. If Jim had stopped there, it would've been a cool demo. But he didn't; he actually saved the most awesome part for the end! At 9:52 Jim drops a bombshell: He's also created an Android app, something a doctor would use to view patient health data from his mobile device. The mobile app is seamlessly integrated into the rest of the system, using the device agent from Oracle's Database Mobile Server. In doing so, Jim has really showcased the full power of this solution: the ability to build M2M solutions that integrate seamlessly with mobile applications. In closing, I want to point out that this is not a hypothetical demo using beta or even v1.0 products. Everything in Jim's demo is available today. What's more, every product shown is mature, and already in production at many customer sites, albeit not in the innovative combination Jim has come up with. If your customers are in the market for these type of solutions (and they almost certainly are) I encourage you to download the components and try it out yourself! This is what I get from clicking on SHOW MORE DETAILS: "Error removing file: Read-only file system" This is what I've tried so far: delete from the downloads directory from my user. deleting permanently, but it does not work. • Wifi won't enter working net after hard reboot

  I rebooted the hard way after my system jammed again because FF eats all the ram. (that's a different problem) I've always gotten away with it, but not this time. The system came up ok BUT it absolutely refuses to log onto the local house wifi net. I know the net is ok as the Windows box I'm writing this on is on it right now. I deleted the connection and rentered the password but it will not go on. /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state says everything is turned on. I know this is my fault but I'd really like to get back on the net. The machine is a Toshiba Satellite. Any suggestions?

• What must be done to allow a development team to minimize difficulties as new team members are added?

  I work at a small Web Dev firm, and have been handling all the PHP/MySQL/etc. for a while. I'm looking at improving our practices to allow for easier collaboration as we grow. Some things I have in mind are: Implementing a versioning system (source control) Coding standards for the team (unless mandated by a certain framework, etc.) Enforcing a common directory structure for our Desktops (for backup purposes, etc.) Web-based task/project/time/file/password/contact management and collaboration app(we've tried a bunch; I may just create one) What do more experienced developers view as necessary first steps in this area? Do you recommend any books? One thing to consider is that the bulk of our daily tasks involve maintenance and adding minor functionality rather than new projects, and the team size will be between 3 and 5. I just found a related question about teams that will be expanding from a solo developer.

  I'm developing web site on self made MVC engine. I have actionController that handles operations like register, login, post submit and etc. actionController receives operation name and parameters. Of course it mast handle errors such user with same nick already exists or password is to short about which action handler have to notify user. The question is which is the best way to organize errors, such that View could easily get localized user notification message. I see two ways First one: define error constants like ERR_NICK_BUSY = '1' ERR_NICK_INVALID = '2' ... and localization map local[ERR_NICK_BUSY] = 'User with the same nick already registered' local[ERR_NICK_INVALID ] = 'Nick, you entered is invalid' ... And second one: define abstract constants like ERR_FIELD_BUSY = '1' ERR_FIELD_INVALID = '2' ... and pass them with field name. In this case localization looks like local['nick_'+ERR_FIELD_BUSY] = 'User with the same nick already registered' ... I don't like both this methods. Can you advise something else?

• Evolution - exchange-connector, Rackspace global catalog server

  I'm (trying to) switch to Ubuntu from Windows XP on my work laptop. Unfortunately, one of the dealbreakers is that I need full Exchange contact/calendar syncing. Our email is hosted by Rackspace (owa.mailseat.com). We login using the usernames of the format [email protected]. I'm trying to set up Evolution to use this account, using exchange-connector-setup-2.32. The first step, entering the OWA URL, usename and password works, and progresses to step 2, where I need to enter a Global Catalog server. I have no idea what to enter here. Everything fails. My questions are - What is the "Global Catalog server" - can I enter/run some dummy server here? - If its necessary, where can I get the information from this? I have a Windows XP machine synced up using Outlook 2007, so if I need to gather any information from that setup I can.

• Corrupted 7z file

  I recently wanted to try out Fedora. So I transfered all my files to it via USB. Then I got frustrated with it, placed all my files in a 7z archive and then copied them back to the drive. • Windows 8 Live Accounts and the actual Windows Account

  As if Windows Security wasn't confusing enough, in Windows 8 we get thrown yet another curve ball with Windows Live accounts to logon. When I set up my Windows 8 machine I originally set it up with a 'real', non-live account that I always use on my Windows machines. I did this mainly so I have a matching account for resources around my home and intranet network so I could log on to network resources properly. At some point later I decided to set up Windows Live security just to see how changes things. Windows wants you to use Windows Live Windows 8 logins are required in order for the Windows RT account info to work. Not that I care - since installing Windows 8 I've maybe spent 10 minutes with Windows RT because - well it's pretty freaking sucky on the desktop. From shitty apps to mis-managed screen real estate I can't say that there's anything compelling there to date, but then I haven't looked that hard either. Anyway… I set up the Windows Live account to see if that changes things. It does - I do get all my live logins to work from Live Account so that Twitter and Facebook posts and pictures and calendars all show up on live tiles on the start screen and in the actual apps. That's nice-ish, but hardly that exciting given that all of the apps tied to those live tiles are average at best. And it would have been nice if all of this could be done without being forced into running with a Windows Live User Account - this all feels like strong-arming you into moving into Microsofts walled garden… and that's probably what it's meant to do. Who am I? The real problem to me though is that these Windows Live and raw Windows User accounts are a bit unpredictable especially when it comes to developer information about the account and which credentials to use. So for example Windows reports folder security like this: Notice it's showing my Windows Live account. Now if I go to Edit and try to add my Windows user account (rstrahl) it'll just automatically show up as the live account. On the other hand though the underlying system sees everything as my real Windows account. After I switched to a Windows Live login account and I have to login to Windows with my Live account, what do you suppose this returns?Console.WriteLine(Environment.UserName); It returns my raw Windows user account (rstrahl). All my permissions, all my actual settings and the desktop console altogether run under that account. If I look in TaskManager (or Process Explorer for me) I see: Everything running on the desktop shell with my login running under my Windows user account. I suppose it makes sense, but where is that association happening? When I switched to a Windows Live account, nowhere did I associate my real account with the Live account - it just happened. And looking through the account configuration dialogs I can't find any reference to the raw Windows account. Other than switching back I see no mention anywhere of the raw Windows account - everything refers to the Live account. Right then, clear as potato soup! So this is who you really are! The problem is that in some situations this schizophrenic account behavior gets a bit weird. Today I was running a local Web application in IIS that uses Windows Authentication - I tried to log-in with my real Windows account login because that's what I'm used to using with WINDOWS freaking Authentication through IIS. But… it failed. I checked my IIS settings, my apps login settings and I just could not for the life of me get into the site with my Windows username. That is until I finally realized that I should try using my Windows Live credentials instead. And that worked. So now in this Windows Authentication dialog I had to type in my Live ID and password, which is - just weird. Then in IIS if I look at a Trace page (or in my case my app's Status page) I see that the logged on account is - my Windows user account. What's really annoying about this is that in some places it uses the live account in other places it uses my Windows account. If I remote desktop into my Web server online - I have to use the local authentication dialog but I have to put in my real Windows credentials not the Live account. Oh yes, it's all so terribly intuitive and logical… So in summary, when you log on with a Live account you are actually mapped to an underlying Windows user. In any application if you check the user name it'll be the underlying user account (not sure what happens in a Windows RT app or even what mechanism is used there to get the user name info).  When logging on to local machine resource with user name and password you have to use your Live IDs even if the permissions on the resources are mapped to your underlying Windows account. • su: Authentication failure

  I have downloaded the Eset Nod32 Antivirus from its website, and I got a eset_nod32av_64bit_en.linux file. I have right-clicked on it, Properties - Permissions, and checked the Allow executing file as program option. Then I was able to run the program. The Installer starts and it asks for my root password. I enter it correctly, but then I get the following error message: "su: Authentication failure". What can I do with this to install the Nod32? Thanks!

• Mythbuntu initial setup cannt connect to server

  I'm really new to linux, and I just installed mythbuntu to a standalone pc, it's all installed ok and I've logged on, and started the setup but I'm having issues. I select language ok, the next screen is database setup, select next but it says can't connect to server and I just loop back. I've done some googling and checked the mysql database password and that is correct, I've also checked that my username belongs to myth tv and it does. Can anyone help? I've tried reinstalling but it doesn't change. Many thanks.

  I'm following the Nagios Ubuntu quickstart instructions. I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 and installing Nagios 3.2.3. At the bottom of the docs it says I need to install the mailx and postfix packages. (Postfix is already installed.) But when I try to install mailx, I get asked which of 3 packages to install: $ sudo apt-get install mailx [sudo] password for nagios: Reading package lists... • How do I handle a user story that I complete, but with compromise and need to revisit?

  I have just fulfilled (is that a good term?) two user stories out of a new project backlog I have just built. These are user registration and password reset, both requiring mail. I need to implement a substitute mail component because my initial choice, and a normally reliable one, wasn't working. Because I was focused on delivering the user stories, not debugging the mail component, I swapped it out to deliver working code at sprint end. Do I now log a new support issue for the mailer, or 're-insert' these stories into the backlog? If I do the latter, am I not introducing too much tech detail into user stories?

  I am totally new in linux/ubuntu I am trying to setup lamp on my OS, however I've installed apache , php , mysql by following commands: sudo apt-get install apache2 sudo apt-get install php5 sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5 sudo apt-get install mysql-server libapache2-mod-auth-mysql php5-mysql sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin everything works fine except that i totally cannot log into MySQL(which leads to phpmyadmin failure login) getting the errors : #1045 Cannot log in to the MySQL server Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) I googled the problem and also I have tried to reinstall all installed components, but the same result came up! in windows i usually modified the content of mysql configure file but in ubuntu nothing is as same as windows!:) can anybody help me on this, really need to setup lampp :-S thanks in advanced

• Installing/configuring mysql server nightmare

  I've never had problems installing and configuring mysql server in kubuntu but now it's just being stubborn, here's my issue: I installed the packages mysql-server, mysql-client (both 5.1), the server package asked me to put a root password, which I did, it then started saying "access denied", on anything Later on, I decided to purge the packages and re-install and gave a tweak to the my.cnf and not it says ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) Please, is there a way to do a fresh start on this and do it right this time? I don't know if I'm missing something but the /var/lib/mysql is not empty but there is no .pid, now the mysql service won't start, there is no mysql.sock either Any help appreciated
