  • Google App Engine, parsedatetime and TimeZones

    Hey guys, I'm working on a Google App Engine / Django app and I encountered the following problem: In my html I have an input for time. The input is free text - the user types "in 1 hour" or "tomorrow at 11am". The text is then sent to the server in AJAX, which parses it using this python library: http://code.google.com/p/parsedatetime/. Once parsed, the server returns an epoch timestamp of the time. Here is the problem - Google App Engine always runs on UTC. Therefore, lets say that the local time is now 11am and the UTC time is 2am. When I send "now" to the server it will return "2am", which is good because I want the date to be received in UTC time. When I send "in 1 hour" the server will return "3am" which is good, again. However, when I send "at noon" the server will return "12pm" because it thinks that I'm talking about noon UTC - but really I need it to return 3am, which is noon for the request sender.. I can pass on the TZ of the browser that sends the request, but that wont really help me - the parsedatetime library wont take a timezone argument (correct me if I'm wrong). Is there a walk around this? Maybe setting the environments TZ somehow? Thanks!

  • Its all working so now I can chill

    Most software houses I have been at have this attitude about their work. Get it done quick and move on. For programmers I find that the chill time is time that can be used to either improve infrastructure, refactor some old code or learn a new language. I would like to know what your throughts about 'chill time' if its the right attitude at all, and if so what to do with it. Is this sort of chilling helpful for a programmer, what are things you do with your own chill time if you adopt this approach to work.

  • Upload using python script takes very long on one laptop as compared to another

    I have a python 2.7 code which uses STORBINARY function for uploading files to an ftp server and RETRBINARY for downloading from this server. However, the issue is the upload is taking a very long time on three laptops from different brands as compared to a Dell laptop. The strange part is when I manually upload any file, it takes the same time on all the systems. The manual upload rate and upload rate with the python script is the same on the Dell Laptop. However, on every other brand of laptop (I have tried with IBM, Toshiba, Fujitsu-Siemens) the python script has a very low upload rate than the manual attempt. Also, on all these other laptops, the upload rate using the python script is the same (1Mbit/s) while the manual upload rate is approx. 8 Mbit/s. I have tried to vary the filesize for the upload to no avail. TCP Optimizer improved the download rate on all the systems but had no effect on the upload rate. Download rate using this script on all the systems is fine and same as the manual download rate. I have checked the server and it has more than 90% free space. The network connection is the same for all the laptops, and I try uploading only with one laptop at a time. All the laptops have almost the same system configurations, same operating system and approximately the same free drive space. If anything the Dell laptop is a little less in terms of processing power and RAM than 2 of the others, but I suppose this has no effect as I have checked many times to see how much was the CPU usage and network usage during these uploads and downloads, and I am sure that no other virus or program has been eating up my bandwidth.     Hey, In order to avoid spamming, I would like to add a waiting time to re-submit a form (i.e. the user should wait a few seconds to submit the form, except the first time that this form is submitted). To do that, I added a timestamp to my form (and a security_hash field containing the timestamp plus the settings.SECRET_KEY which ensures that the timestamp is not fiddled with).     I'm looking for a faster way to calculate GC content for DNA strings read in from a FASTA file. This boils down to taking a string and counting the number of times that the letter 'G' or 'C' appears. I also want to specify the range of characters to consider. I have a working function that is fairly slow, and it's causing a bottleneck in my code.   • Preventing Netbeans JAXB generation trashing classes

    I'm developing a SOAP service using JAX-WS and JAXB under Netbeans 6.8, and getting a little frustrated with Netbeans trashing my work every time the XSD schema my JAXB bindings are based upon changes. To elaborate, the IDE automatically generates classes bound to the schema, which can then be (un)marshalled from/to XML using JAXB. To these classes I've added extra methods to (for example) convert to and from separate classes designed to be persisted to database with JPA. The problem is that whenever the schema changes and I rebuild, these classes are regenerated, and all my custom methods are deleted. I can manually replace them by copy-pasting from a backup file, but that is rather time-consuming and tedious. As I'm using an iterative design approach, the schema is changing rather frequently and I'm wasting an awful lot of time whenever it does, simply to reinstate my previous code. While the IDE automatically regenerating the JAXB-bound classes is entirely reasonable and I don't mean to imply otherwise, I was wondering if anyone had any bright ideas as to how to prevent my extra work having to be manually reinstated every time my schema changes?

  • Initializing PHP class property declarations with simple expressions yields syntax error

    According to the PHP docs, one can initialize properties in classes with the following restriction: "This declaration may include an initialization, but this initialization must be a constant value--that is, it must be able to be evaluated at compile time and must not depend on run-time information in order to be evaluated." I'm trying to initialize an array and having some issues. While this works fine: public $var = array( 1 => 4, 2 => 5, ); This creates a syntax error: public $var = array( 1 => 4, 2 => (4+1), ); Even this isn't accepted: public $var = 4+1; which suggests it's not a limitation of the array() language construct. Now, the last time I checked, "4+1" equated to a constant value that not only should be accepted, but should in fact be optimized away. In any case, it's certainly able to be evaluated at compile-time. So what's going on here? Is the limitation really along the lines of "cannot be any calculated expression at all", versus any expression "able to be evaluated at compile time"? The use of "evaluated" in the doc's language suggests that simple calculations are permitted, but alas.... If this is a bug in PHP, does anyone have a bug ID? I tried to find one but didn't have any luck.

    I have an "add" button that's represented by a UIBarButtonItem. Hitting the "add" button adds an object into a list that represents a moment in time. By default, that time is "now"...but I'd like to be able to use dragging behavior to let the user specify earlier times for the object. Here's the behavior I want to implement: If the user touches on the UIBarButtonItem and lets go quickly, an object is added to the list that represents "now." If the user touches on the UIBarButtonItem and drags, a little UI pops up that shows the time that the distance of their drag represents. The further they drag, the further back in time their touch will represent. When they let go, the object representing an earlier time will get added to the list. (Though the description of the behavior is complicated, I'm convinced this will be pretty intuitive for users of the app.) I haven't implemented code for anything but the most simple touches in the past, and I'm at a loss as to the best way to try this. Does anyone have any suggestions, or could point me towards some sample code that implements something like this? Thanks very much.

    I have a database server in "Europe/London" time zone and my web server in "Europe/Brussels". Since it is summer time now my application server has a 2 hour difference. I would expect the jdbc driver to just set the "unix time" value it gets from the server in the Date object. (a proper solution should work with any timezone combination, not only for db in GMT)

Is there a method that is called when a user clicks back to that tab, since the viewDidLoad won't be called that second time? PushRegistry.registerAlarm("ClassName", alarm.getTime()); this is working perfect and it starts app on that time. But this is asking me for permissions two times. 1) when I am registering alarm using PushRegistry.registerAlarm("ClassName", alarm.getTime()); 2) when app start on that defined time. in this and this link I found that if my application is signed then it will not ask for permission when app autostart. but I am not sure about the time when my code will register alarm. Will it ask for permission or not?

    So I know that clock() measures clock cycles, and thus isn't very good for measuring time, and I know there are functions like omp_get_wtime() for getting the wall time, but it is frustrating for me that the wall time varies so much, and was wondering if there was some way to measure distinct clock cycles (only one cycle even if more than one thread executed in it). It has to be something relatively simple/native. Thanks

  • What is the best way to make a schedule in MFC

    I have a list of items that are each associated with a start and end time and date. What I want to do is, given a time and date range, display only the items that fall within that window, even partially. What I'm doing is creating a CListCtrl with all the items in it and the CListCtrl is sorted by start time by default. But given a time range, I don't know how to search for the first item that is within the range. Another problem with the list control is it displays as a list, whereas it would be nice if there was a control that could also show things that are concurrent side by side. I'm doing this within a dialog application.

    I want to count the time elapsed between two events in nanoseconds. To do that, I can use System.nanoTime() as mentioned here. The problem is that the two events are happening in different threads. Since nanoTime() doesn't return an absolute timestamp but instead can only be used to calculate time differences, I'd like to know if the values I get on the two different threads are consistent with the physical time elapsed between the two events.

    For example, i have a column named EmployeeName. Every time a user changes/fix his name, i need to keep a count. If he changes his name twice, then count is 2. Also, i need to store the time of every change employee makes on EmployeeName e.g. if the name essentially is James and time created is 9:00 AM and then employee changes to John on 11:00 AM, i need to preserve this new time and new value as well as the previous one which is James at 9:00 AM. I hope its clear! Thank you guys...Best Answer will be chosen... If this requires a trigger, giving a sketchy pseudo-code will be very much appreciated.
