  • Three's mobile broadband

    I've recently downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 and it seems great I just can't get my three ireland mifi dongle to work at all. When I plug it in, it only recognizes it as a storage devise. Any idea's of how establish a permanent connection to this mifi dongle? I'm in Ireland and running a Dell Inspiron 1520 with 3gb of ram and using the huawei E586 mifi device. Really want to continue using this os but is everything this complicated to get up and running on it?

  • Synaptics Touchpad cannot move while pressing a key? V 8.1

    my Synaptics touchpad refuses to move anytime I am pressing a key on the keyboard. I've looked everywhere on the internet telling me to go to Device Pointer Properties, then Settings, then Pointing, then Sensitivity then mess with Palm Check, but Palm Check isn't there and it isn't anywhere else. Please respond to this as this is pretty frustrating. My touchpad is Synaptics ClickPad V8.1 Would installing an older driver give me a palm check option? If so, where do I install an older one

  • Dual booting windows 8/ubuntu 12.04. Grub doesn't appear and machine never boot in ubuntu

    i got a new ACER predator AG3620-UR308 which came with windows 8, so i wanted to run ubuntu 12.04.2 on it as a dual booting. To be honest, i've been doing dual booting for a while now so, i did the right thing. the box came with 2TB HDD. so i made 4 partitions with a raw partition just after the windows installation partition I always do manual installation so even if ubuntu didn't detect windows 8, it was ok for me. So i created swap area and finished the installation etc....Grub was install on the only drive there which is sda. After reboot, grub doesn't even come up.So it always boot in windows 8. I did repeat the installation process twice and yield same result. which is weird because this method always works for me so far.Even the laptop am using to write this post is a dual booting windows 7/ mint nadia installed the same way. Is there anything new in windows 8 that i didn't make provision for? Before starting the installation, all i read about was that , windows 8 should be installed first and ubuntu after. I went ahead and disable secure boot from the BIOS and enabled CSM (don't even know what it means) according to Acer custhelp site . I boot from USB and did fdisk -l bellow is the result: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.     Hello, I'd like to use my cell phone (Nokia E71) as a handset for incoming calls in Skype/Empathy. I know this basically means that I have to configure it as a PulseAudio device, but I wasn't able to do that. Following a guide (in Italian, sorry), I installed pulseaudio-module-bluetooth and BlueMan, but the latter sees the phone as a "Smartphone", not allowing me choose other profiles. Can you help me?     I am running a media center setup with the display through HDMI, powered by a NVIDIA card. I am using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers availabler through the additional drivers utility, on Xubuntu 11.10. In the mixer, I have all the volumes unmuted and turned up to 100%, but no sound through the HDMI. If I plug in speakers the nd comes through just fine. What can I do to make the sound go through the HDMI and to the TV?

In my dorm there is a bit strange connection way for internet, I have to configure given "IP address, Subnetmask, Default gateway, Preferred DNS server, and Alternate DNS server" to have an internet connection, otherwise it is imposible.     I've been using ndiswrapper to make work some wireless cards using its Windows drivers, because they are not yet supported by free Linux drivers. Until Ubuntu 12.04. Now, I can install Windows Wireless Network Drivers (ndisgtk) from Ubuntu Software Center but when I try to load the driver, I get an error message saying FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found. I get the same error if I type on a terminal sudo modprobe ndiswrapper. How can I workaround this bug until it's fixed?

    I use CyanogenMod and ClockWork Recovery on my Nexus 7. How can my existing full nandroid backup be used to restore my device after installing Ubuntu? The instructions assume "recovery" would mean re-flashing the vanilla image, at factory, data-wiped condition. It would be useful to provide a .zip that can be flash via Clockwork (or other) recovery and back to whatever Nandroid backup there is - much as any other ROM is provided/used.

  • JavaOne 2013: (Key) Notes of a conference – State of the Java platform and all the roadmaps by Amis

    Last week’s JavaOne conference provided insights in the roadmap of the Java platform as well as in the current state of things in the Java community. The close relationship between Oracle and IBM concerning Java, the (continuing) lack of such a relationship with Google, the support from Microsoft for Java applications on its Azure cloud and the vibrant developer community – with over 200 different Java User Groups in many countries of the world. There were no major surprises or stunning announcements. Java EE 7 (release in June) was celebrated, the progress of Java 8 SE explained as well as the progress on Java Embedded and ME. The availability of NetBeans 7.4 RC1 and JDK 8 Early Adopters release as well as the open sourcing of project Avatar probably were the only real news stories. The convergence of JavaFX and Java SE is almost complete; the upcoming alignment of Java SE Embedded and Java ME is the next big consolidation step that will lead to a unified platform where developers can use the same skills, development tools and APIs on EE, SE, SE Embedded and ME development. This means that anything that runs on ME will run on SE (Embedded) and EE – not necessarily the reverse because not all SE APIs are part of the compact profile or the ME environment. However, the trimming down of the SE libraries and the increased capabilities of devices mean that a pretty rich JVM runs on many devices – such as JavaFX 8 on the Raspberry PI. The major theme of the conference was Internet of Things. A world of things that are smart and connected, devices like sensors, cameras and equipment from cars, fridges and television sets to printers, security gates and kiosks that all run Java and are all capable of sending data over local network connections or directly over the internet. The number of devices that has these capabilities is rapidly growing. This means that the number of places where Java programs can help program the behavior of devices is growing too. It also means that the volume of data generated is expanding and that we have to find ways to harvest that data, possibly do a local pre-processing (filter, aggregate) and channel the data to back end systems. Terms typically used are edge devices (small, simple, publishing data), gateways (receiving data from many devices, collecting and consolidating, pre-processing, sending onwards to back end – typically using real time event processing) and enterprise services – receiving the data-turned-information from the gateways to further consolidate, distribute and act upon. A cheap device like the Raspberry PI is a perfect way to get started as a Java developer with what embedded (device) programming means and how interaction with physical input and output takes place.   • Android - Force Close - Null Pointer on Canvas?

    Please bear with me. I have a very odd problem. Basically, my app so far, has 3 activities (a main splash screen, an 'options/menu' screen and the main app). If I follow the very specific steps oulined below, I get a 'null pointer exception' in the 2nd activity) and the app force closes...... Here are the steps: Start the app (a game based on Surfaceview), tap through to the third activity so the game is running, then hit the home key so the game is paused and put to the background, the activity/app is ended through DDMS in the SDK then restarted on the device (all OK so far), now if I hit the back key on the device twice in quick succession, it happens. All other sequence of events is fine, even to the point of pressing the back key, waiting for the previous activity to show, then hitting back again - all OK. Only when the back key is pressed twice in quick succession following all the above steps does the problem occur. I'm assuming that the canvas isn't ready as it's showing as 'null' when this happens, but I'm not sure why this is happening as surely it's happening when I'm trying to go back to activity 1, but the logcat shows the error in activity 2. if I stop the activity running my 'doDraw' method (which referenced the canvas), then all is OK - so I can safely assume it is the canvas causing the problem.     I need a version later than the one shipped with lucid because I want to make use of the new hide_hid_files and hide_dot_files mount options, which are not present before version 2010.8.8. Ever since I compiled and installed the latest version of NTFS-3G via checkinstall, whenever I plugin a NTFS mass storage device, Ubuntu chooses the ntfs kernel module upon the ntfs-3g fuse driver to mount it. I don't know how to tell my system to use the 3g driver. mount -t ntfs-3g and fstab entries work just fine.
