  • Change AccountName/LoginName for a SharePoint User (SPUser)

    - by Rohit Gupta
Consider the following: We have an account named MYDOMAIN\eholz. This accounts Active Directory Login Name changes to MYDOMAIN\eburrell Now this user was a active user in a Sharepoint 2010 team Site, and had a userProfile using the Account name MYDOMAIN\eholz. Since the AD LoginName changed to eburrell hence we need to update the Sharepoint User (SPUser object) as well update the userprofile to reflect the new account name. To update the Sharepoint User LoginName we can run the following stsadm command on the Server: STSADM –o migrateuser –oldlogin MYDOMAIN\eholz –newlogin MYDOMAIN\eburrell –ignoresidhistory However to update the Sharepoint 2010 UserProfile, i first tried running a Incremental/Full Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service… this did not work. To enable me to update the AccountName field (which is a read only field) of the UserProfile, I had to first delete the User Profile for MYDOMAIN\eholz and then run a FULL Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service which synchronizes the Sharepoint User Profiles with the AD profiles.

  • Ubuntu Server 11.10 AMD64: Installation of graphical desktop changes kernel!?

    - by MindGap
I've a Ubuntu Server 11.10 amd64 installation that needed a graphical desktop to execute some visual apps. While searching for the correct way to achive this, I noticed that there was a lot of people saying that invoquing the gnome desktop installation (apt-get install ubuntu-desktop) would switch from server to desktop kernel. Is this true!? I've checked and the kernel seems to remain unchanged after the install. I need to be sure of this because the desktop flavoured kernel doesn't seem to support the ServeRaid 8K controller sitting on my IBM server and I have no ideia on how to enable support for it. (I'll be grateful if someone could point me a good guide on how to install ubuntu when the storage controller is not detected) Any comment on this matter will be greatly appreciated! Good linuxing!

  • When I have 6 GB of RAM installed, why is just 3 GB available on Ubuntu?

    - by user842225
I'm using a laptop with 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I used to have only 2 GB of RAM. Today, our IT-support upgraded my laptop to a total of 6 GB of RAM. They told me "Though you do now have 6 GB, when you use your current Ubuntu, you'll only have 3 GB available. You have to install the latest version of 64-bit Ubuntu to enable all of the 6 GB." He was in a hurry to leave without explaining more. I turned on my laptop, used gnome-system-monitor to check, and as he said, it shows I only have 3 GB of RAM. Could someone explain me why? Why do I have just 3 GB available, and why installing a 64-bit version makes all of the 6 GB available?

  • How To Sideload Modern Apps on Windows 8

    - by Chris Hoffman
The average Windows 8 user can only download apps that Microsoft has approved from the Windows Store. Windows 8 offers two ways to sideload unapproved apps, which are intended for developers and businesses with internal apps. These methods cannot be used by the average geek to install unapproved apps from the web. Windows 8’s new interface takes the Apple iOS approach of forbidding unapproved software, not the Android approach of allowing all users to enable sideloading. Note: This only applies to Modern apps in the new Windows 8 interface, not on the desktop. Windows desktop applications can be installed normally. However, you can’t install any desktop applications on devices running Windows RT. Why Does 64-Bit Windows Need a Separate “Program Files (x86)” Folder? Why Your Android Phone Isn’t Getting Operating System Updates and What You Can Do About It How To Delete, Move, or Rename Locked Files in Windows

  • Writing the tests for FluentPath

Writing the tests for FluentPath is a challenge. The library is a wrapper around a legacy API (System.IO) that wasnt designed to be easily testable. If it were more testable, the sensible testing methodology would be to tell System.IO to act against a mock file system, which would enable me to verify that my code is doing the expected file system operations without having to manipulate the actual, physical file system: what we are testing here is FluentPath, not System.IO. Unfortunately, that...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. • Digitally Signing a XAP Silverlight

Ive been referring a lot of people lately to the steps to sign a XAP. So I decided to post an excerpt I wrote about signing Silverlight XAP files in the Silverlight 4 Whitepaper on Channel 9 here to help spread the word. The signing process is important if you are creating an elevated trust out of browser application because it helps: Reassure your users that the application is authentic Allow updates to elevated trust applications Elevated trust out-of-browser applications enable developers...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Move from JSON to Protobuf. Is it worth it?

    - by katit
We have REST webservices that can serve XML or JSON (WCF). I'm toying with idea of implementing Protobufs. Why? PROS Less load on servers. Smaller message size - less traffic. It is easier to switch now than later. CONS Need to be implemented Going to be harder to troubleshoot/sniff messages for debugging. I can enable GZip on server and JSON will consume as much traffic What is your suggestion and/or experience on this?

  • Silverlight 4 + RIA Services - Ready for Business: Validating Data

To continue our series lets look at data validation our business applications. • Web API Presentation at DC DNUG

    - by Steve Michelotti
This Tuesday (July 19), I’ll be presenting the ASP.NET Web API at the DC DotNet Users Group. Abstract: Modern web applications have seen an explosion in Web API creation. Twitter, Facebook, Google, Azure, you name it – it is becoming essential to provide a Web API so that consumers can build applications and mashups on top of your services. Web 2.0 has shown a trend away from SOAP towards a REST architecture style. With the new ASP.NET Web API, Microsoft is now providing first-class support for HTTP services including tools to apply the richness of a REST architectural style. This demo heavy presentation will show how the new ASP.NET Web API will enable you to build rich HTTP services in a REST architectural style while leveraging custom media types, custom HTTP handlers, jQuery and more! The presentation will also cover new features of MVC 4 including Razor enhancements, Web Optimizations, and more.

  • Do I own copyright of program I made in own time?

    - by Dave Mess
I created a software package that aids electrical engineers with common calculations used on site (substations to be specific). I created the package in my own time, without being asked and without guidance. The package is now widely used within my company and I intend to distribute it nationally. Do I own the copyright? My contract does state that all work produced is theirs, but this was outside of work and outside of my 'scope of work'. My company is mainly a civil and construction company and had no influence in the creation of the program. From comments: This is the paragraph "During the course of your service, you will disclose to the company all information, formulae, processes, inventions or improvements which you have learned, discovered or evolved during the course of your service or in connection with the business of the company and will sign any necessary documents to enable the company to obtain patent protection whether still in the company service or not. " They are taking it seriously and have got their lawyers.

  • Mount Bluetooth USB in VirtualBox

    - by GoBrewers14
I originally asked this question here Python Module PyBluez Error and have narrowed it down to basically I can't get VBox to recognize my bluetooth USB. I'm on a MAC OS X 10.9.2. I've installed VirtualBox as well as the Extension Pack and I've installed Ubuntu Desktop 10.04.4 on the VirtualBox. I've searched several Mac forums and this seems to be a common problem w/o a clear solution. Anyways, the question is how can I get VirtualBox to let Ubuntu recognize my bluetooth USB? I've checked 'Enable USB 2.0 EHCI Controller' and added my two bluetooth devices to the filters list. and when I click here to mount the USB I get this error message... Any ideas? Thanks, John

  • IE9 Preview disables CLR DEVPATH feature

(This is not related to IKVM.NET, but since I spent several hours tracking this down, I thought I'd write it up here in the hope anyone else struggling with this will find it.) One of the lesser known (development) features of the CLR is the ability to override the regular Fusion assembly loading rules by setting the DEVPATH environment variable (and adding an entry to the machine.config to enable this). It turns out that this feature can be disabled...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Ubuntu move fullscreen window to other monitor?

    - by dusz
I have been using Cinnamon with Ubuntu for quite some time now and here with full screen applications (games and the like) I could press META to bring up the "start menu/tray" then right-click that application and "move to monitor - monitor 1" - I see no such button when right-clicking applications from tray on Ubuntu with Unity. I'd prefer being able to do it that way since I am more used to it, is there some way to enable it for Unity? For reference this is how it is on Cinnamon: http://i.stack.imgur.com/PC1rA.png Edit: I have been looking around with Ubuntu Tweak Tool, dconf-editor and CCSM - though I can't seem to find anything there.

  • @OnStart & @OnStop

    - by Geertjan
In applications based on NetBeans Platform 7.2, you'll be able to replace all your ModuleInstall classes with this code: import org.openide.modules.OnStart; import org.openide.modules.OnStop; @OnStart public final class Installer implements Runnable { @Override public void run() { System.out.println("enable something..."); } @OnStop public static final class Down implements Runnable { @Override public void run() { System.out.println("disable something..."); } } } Build the module and the annotations result in named services, thanks to @NamedServiceDefinition: Aside from no longer needing to register the ModuleInstall class in the manifest, performance of startup will be enhanced, if you use the above approach: https://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=200636

  • How to debug wifi connection?

    - by mmb
I am using Ubuntu's Network Manager to connect to a local wifi router. My problem is, that it often disconnects without any visible reason (router is on, internet connection seems to be working, wifi diodes are blinking). I mostly have to disable wifi from Network Manager, enable it again to get wifi connecting again. Plus I am often experiencing Network Manager trying to connect to my wifi, trying several times but then giving up. I even tried an external usb-wifi card, but with the very same results. My question is: How can I debug this? Which logs should I read to see what is really happening when all of these errors occur - so I can post them here and see how to proceed?

  • Microsoft Releases Windows Server 2012

Windows Server 2012 offers expanded virtualization capabilities and works with Windows Azure, the software company's cloud platform. It can deliver more than 200 public, private and hybrid cloud services. The goal seems to be to deliver any application on any cloud. Rand Morimoto, president of Microsoft partner Convergent Computing, sees a number of major selling points for Windows Server 2012. For instance, its deduplication features can save a company 40 to 50 percent in storage space. Its automated IT management capabilities enable it to manage a large number of virtual machines. • nVidia GT 220 not working properly with Ubuntu 12.10

    - by Glaedr
I used to enable proprietary nVidia drivers on every previous Ubuntu release to get it working properly (elseway I was forced to a very low resolution and no graphic acceleration), and everything worked fine then. In particular, I noticed - still I don't know why - that the GPU fan on every OS gets noisy until the video drivers are loaded (runlevel 5, it seems, in Linux), and then slows down to a normal speed. Today I installed 12.10. Running the Live CD, surprisingly, everything was working fine: full resolution, acceleration, silent fan, and so on. The running driver was nvidia-current (GT 216). After installing and booting I found that the fan was overrunning. The installed driver is nouveau. I tried installing nvidia-current, or any other proprietary driver, even installing the kernel headers & source and then the drivers (as suggested here), but all I'm getting with proprietary drivers is, the irony, low resolution, noisy fan and no acceleration (thus obviously unity and compiz refusing to start). Does anybody know a way out?

  • Upgrade from 10.04 to 11.04, must maintain minimum kernel 2.6.38

    - by Steve
I have a machine running 10.04 and am using BTRFS with lzo compression. I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.38 to enable this (using a PPA). I have my /home folder on a separate (4 TB) BTRFS drive. / is on ext4. My only complaint with this setup is that it uses the old BTRFS tools. How can I upgrade first to 10.10, then 11.04 as required, when 10.10 uses 2.6.35? I don't want it to crash/choke on mounting /home. Will it just let me keep booting the newer kernel I have while upgrading?

  • Scaling SQL Server in Azure

If you’ve been reading the wires about SQL Azure you will have seen a change to the tiers that are being offered. Thsi is all so that you can get a more predictable performance level from the platform and also to enable Azure to manage the resources. You now have 3 categories basic, standard and premium, and within those you have some other levels. This enables you to start your service at a low level and then as required request more capacity (through the portal or API).   For details on the...(read more)
