• How to remove HDD Low virus

  “HDD Low virus” is a new  fake system optimizer application which started affecting all  the Windows ( XP, vista, Windows 7) based computers world wide starting from Monday. It gets installed to the computers without notice by passing all our antivirus software. The infected computers will suddenly popup a system error  similar to the below screen shot and tries to shut down the computer.   Though the major anti virus companies have not yet release an update for this virus, We can easily remove this virus using the below steps Steps to remove HDD Low virus Press Alt+Ctrl+Delete and go the the Task Manager -> Process and kill the process with name [random number].exe ( e.g 123410.exe) Go to Run -> type msconfig to launch the System Configuration utility. In the Start up Tab un check  all the services with random name (e.g jygkgs.exe) and note folder path of the service in the Command column. Go to that folder path and delete all the exe files with random name manually ( It is recommended to use command prompt to delete the files) Delete all the HDD low files in the below path %Desktop%\HDD Low.lnk %Programs%\HDD Low\Uninstall HDD Low.lnk %Programs%\HDD Low\HDD Low.lnk Open registry using Run-> regedit.exe search for the below key and delete software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run [random number].exe” Restart the computer Also update your anti virus definition and run a full scan of your computer to remove any affected files. • Cannot connect to google talk using empathy/pidgin after upgrading

  I can't seem to be able to connect to google talk using either pidgin or empathy after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 (fresh install). I do not know why... empathy just writes "Connecting ..." forever and never connects. What can I do from there? Google talk's web interface works just fine for me so I doubt it is a firewall issue. EDIT: In fact sometimes it's able to connect (empathy), it just takes a LOOONG time (I'd say about 5 mins), longer than I am willing to wait. On the other hand, the web interface is able to connect in seconds.

  After reading Paul Graham's essay Hackers and Painters and Joel Spolsky's Advice for Computer Science College Students, I think I've finally gotten it through my thick skull that I should not be loath to work hard in academic courses that aren't "programming" or "computer science" courses. To quote the former: I've found that the best sources of ideas are not the other fields that have the word "computer" in their names, but the other fields inhabited by makers. Painting has been a much richer source of ideas than the theory of computation. — Paul Graham, "Hackers and Painters" There are certainly other, much stronger reasons to work hard in the "boring" classes. However, it'd also be neat to know that these classes may someday inspire me in programming. My question is: what are some specific examples where ideas from literature, art, humanities, philosophy, and other fields made their way into programming? In particular, ideas that weren't obviously applied the way they were meant to (like most math and domain-specific knowledge), but instead gave utterance or inspiration to a program's design and choice of names. Good examples: The term endian comes from Gulliver's Travels by Tom Swift (see here), where it refers to the trivial matter of which side people crack open their eggs. The terms journal and transaction refer to nearly identical concepts in both filesystem design and double-entry bookkeeping (financial accounting). mkfs.ext2 even says: Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: done Off-topic: Learning to write English well is important, as it enables a programmer to document and evangelize his/her software, as well as appear competent to other programmers online. • Poor upload/download speed on 2 x ADSL lines into a Cisco 2621XM

  Hi, Sorry never been on this site before so I apologise if not the right section or even forum. I have users complaining of very slow internetn connectivity on site and have checked with our ISP who have said that the line is testing at 8mb. We have 2 x BT lines that have our ISP broadand on them. Both lines go into a Cisco 2600 series router that then has a PIX firewall off that. Connectivity is successful just gone really slow and unable to download anything. • Unable to access local network when Cisco VPN client is connected

  I'm a developer and don't have much networking expertise, so bear with me. I'm using the Cisco VPN Client 5.0.02.0090 to connect to my work's VPN that way I can RDP into my work computer. Once connected, I can't ping anything on the local network once connected to the VPN thus I am unable to access my work's network. This used to work about two weeks ago but abruptly stopped working today. However, I have the Cisco VPN Client installed on my laptop and I am able to ping and RDP into my work computer from there. Both my desktop and laptop computers are connected to the same router at home. I have tried the following so far: Rebooted my computer Reinstalled VPN client Updated NIC drivers Disabled firewall Opened up ports 500, 4500, and 10000 Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• How to troubleshoot a GPF?

  I get a GPF dialog box out of the blue fairly often (like about 2 hours after I turn on the computer). It basically says that svchost.exe had a failure... (see the corresponding Event Log entry below). Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 5/18/2010 Time: 7:41:16 PM User: N/A Computer: DKHA-IPSA Description: Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.5512, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0004eaa9. Shortly after this error pops up, the computer pretty much grinds to a halt (e.g. some UI elements on the desktop simply do not respond). And I have to do a hard reboot. How do I troubleshoot this type of thing? P.S. The PC has all the latest patches and nothing is missing in the Device Manager.

• DNS and DHCP not agreeing on an IP address

  I'm having a problem where our Windows Server 2003 domain controller assigns my Windows 7 computer one IP address (x.x.x.75) via DHCP, but reports another (x.x.x.84) via DNS. This causes some interesting behavior on the network. If I change my adapter settings to get IP and DNS addresses from DHCP, I can access the internet, but no one on our network can access my computer. If I change my IP manually to what DNS says it is, I lose my internet access, but everyone can get to my computer again. I know that we have some old, invalid reverse DNS pointers hanging around (a reverse lookup on an IP address often gives more than one result, usually not including the one that is correct), so that could be contributing, but my problem is recent, and the invalid reverse pointers have been around a long time. What's going on, and how do I fix it?

  When I try, I receive the following error message: A computer restart is required. You must restart this computer before installing SQL Server. Of course, I have restarted the computer :-) I'm not really sure how to proceed. The version that sql server reports when I query it is: SQL Server 10.0.1600.22 - RTM (Express Edition with Advanced ) Solved: As it turns out, I had to end up uninstalling logitech's quick cam pro software. Although the fix below did not directly resolve it, the value of that registry key led me to discovering the solution by querying for it online :-) thanks!!!

  The relationship between a large, complex organization and its key suppliers of information technology is normally more than just "strategic". Expectations about the duration of the relationship typically exceed 20 years. Enterprise applications and technology infrastructure are not expected to be changed out like petunias. So how would you rate the due diligence processes as performed in Higher Education when selecting critical, transformational information technology? • Problem restarting my Ubuntu system

  Whenever I try to restart my Ubuntu either from the command line by typing reboot or in GNOME the computer goes from X to console, starts the shutdown process and then a message saying "[ some number ] Starting new kernel" appears on the screen and the computer goes back to X login screen. I suspect this must have something to do with nvidia drivers, because it seemed to have appeared around the time I bought a new graphic card. Also, when I reboot the second time I see weird graphical artifacts on the screen. When I boot from ubuntu live cd I can reboot just fine. I used jaunty, recently I switched to karmic with no change. This bug is very annoying, because I have to hard reset my computer in order to reboot. Also not good for the filesystems, I suspect. Can you suggest a way to debug the cause or if not at least the easiest way to go about reinstalling ubuntu without losing customizations/settings/data?

  I thought I've copied all of the pictures and videos that I've taken using my digital camera Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS to my computer. Then I format the memory card. Then I found I didn't take all of the files! I don't have any other means of connecting the memory card to computer except via the camera. But the camera doesn't show it as a removable device directly in my computer so programs like Glary Utilities and PC Inspector didn't find the drive. I didn't take any picture after I formatted it. Is there any free software that can help me to get the pictures and videos? My memory card is an 4 GB SDHC card. Thanks.

• Setting up Dynamic DNS for Wireless Cameras And Accessing them Remotely

  I've been trying to set up two TP LINK wireless N cameras that I bought so that I can see them remotely. I've set it up so that each has it's own ip address (192...105/192...106) and I can access them if I type that into the browser of a local computer The thing is that I don't know how to access them from another remote PC. My current setup is a a each camera connected to the router which then connects to the modem. When I set up the Dynamic DNS, and I access the "webpage" for my IP through a remote computer, it just goes to the configuration page of the modem. I have no idea how to make it go to the router or to the cameras. the router has its own ip range of 192.168.1.x while the modem has 192.168.2.x To access the cameras I type into the web browser: 192.168.1.114:100 on the local computer but I have no idea how to get there through the webpage of my Dynamic DNS remotely.

• Windows XP will only boot if it has booted into safe mode, and then been restarted into normal mode, anybody ever seen this?

  I have a workstation with an impressively strange problem. If you boot the computer, it will load up to the "select user account screen" and then freeze completely before I can select a user account. No mouse, keyboard, anything working. However, if you then reboot the computer into safe mode, do NOTHING, and then reboot into regular mode, it loads fine. The next time you reboot the computer, it will freeze a the login screen again. So basically to log in normally I must reboot into safe mode first every time, even though I'm not even doing anything in safe mode (I don't even need to log into a profile). Anybody ever seen anything like this?

  I got the following, quite puzzling error today when running a unit test: java.lang.ClassFormatError: Absent Code attribute in method that is not native or abstract in class file javax/servlet/http/Cookie A google search found this post, which explains that it is caused by having an interface in the classpath, and not an actual implementation. In this case it’s the java-ee interface. To fix this I added the jetty servlet api implementation to my pom: jetty javax.servlet test Piece of cake. I have run in to this before, so I figured I would capture the fix here in case I run in to it again.

• Excel 2003 opening files on network

  The network is laid out with an XP Pro computer as the server hosting files, then 3 XP computers connecting to it for filesharing, all on it's own router. One computer can open .xls files no problem, and she runs Office XP. The other two computers run Office 2003, and cannot open any shared files by double-clicking them, or by selecting File-Open in Excel. If the file gets copied to the local computer, it opens instantly. I have tried disabling the AV on all computers, disabling the Windows firewall, and doublechecking permissions on the server. I have also tried disabling DDE, but that doesn't help at all, just like Tools-Options-unticking Ignore other applications. Any ideas? This apparently started a couple days ago
