  • py2app prescripts

    The py2app documentation mentions prescripts, being run by __boot__.py prior to the main python script. I couldn't find a way to easily specify any prescript on the setup.py file or build process. I did however manage to 'hack' __boot__.py manually and add another _run(prescript) command before my main _run(main_script) and it seemed to work fine. It would however be much better using the standard py2app build process. What I'm essentially trying to do is monkey-patch my sites-packages.zip file prior to the main script being launched. The prescript essentially checks for updates on the server, and if there are any, downloads them, and then overwrites the site-packages.zip file. Much quicker than having to re-install the application from scratch. Any ideas?

    I am trying to package a simple maven java project (uses javax.persistence api) into a single jar using the onejar-maven-plugin.   • ruby / rails / mysql performance degraded on Snow Leopard

    I've burned a bunch of hours on this. I'm not having problems getting things to build, but I am seeing that my test suite runs about 2x slower than when I was on OS X 10.5.x . I've spent a lot of time playing around with different optimization settings (learning to avoid homebrew's llvm-gcc compilation). I've just learned that I needed to tweaks /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist in order to get the kernel to boot in 64 bit mode. However, my rails app is still running a bit slower than before, even after warming up the mysql server. So what performance tweaks might i need to look into? Right now the stock ruby 1.8.7 runs faster than 1.9.1 for some things, and I'd really like to know if there is anything I should be looking for. All my dev software has been compiled for x86_64, mysql with -O2 optimization, using regular gcc (not llvm-gcc).

  • How to solve rake tasks deprecation on the rails plugin?

    Because of the concept introduced in here, Rails::Plugin is nothing more than a Rails::Engine, but since it's loaded too late in the boot process, it does not have the same configuration powers as a bare Rails::Engine. Opposite to Rails::Railtie and Rails::Engine, you are not supposed to inherit from Rails::Plugin. Rails::Plugin is automatically configured to be an engine by simply placing inside vendor/plugins. Since this is done automatically, you actually cannot declare a Rails::Engine inside your Plugin, otherwise it would cause the same files to be loaded twice. This means that if you want to ship an Engine as gem it cannot be used as plugin and vice-versa. Besides this conceptual difference, the only difference between Rails::Engine and Rails::Plugin is that plugins automatically load the file "init.rb" at the plugin root during the boot process. rake tasks in the rails plugins are deprecated and it is advised to use lib/tasks instead. How to solve this? Can I just simply move the plugin's tasks to the lib/tasks?

  • Tomcat can't talk to MySql after outage

    I missed a payment for my server and hey suspended my account for a day or so. When they brought the server back up all my data was in tact but for some reason Tomcat can't make a JDBC connection to my MySql server. They both run on the same machine and hence I have a bind address of 127.0.0.1. It's strange because I have reset the machine of my own accord before without issue but clearly something has been reset in the downtime. I followed this guide (Just the bits which don't concern S3, I am not on Amazon infrastructure) originally and everything worked as expected. I'm very new to being a SysAdmin and I'm not sure what to try, how would you go about diagnosing this issue?   • A JTAG emulator for use with a Hawkboard and OpenOCD?

    I'd like to try bare metal ARM programming with the Hawkboard, but the deployment process looks awful. I'm totally new to this, so I could be misunderstanding the instructions, but it appears that I have to use a program called AISgen to convert the binary file, then boot with u-Boot over UART and copy the AIS binary into memory. Not only is that a lot of stuff to do every time I make a change, it also doesn't give me the ability to debug with GDB. The best solution for this that I can find is JTAG. But the prices for these JTAG emulators look ridiculous. I'm not even sure which ones will work with the Hawkboard and which ones won't. So far, my best bet appears to be the Flyswatter, but the pin layout is different. Basically, I need something that's relatively cheap and works with the Hawkboard and OpenOCD. Any suggestions? Or is there another way I could do this, perhaps?

    I'm trying to configure a couple of Cisco 1941 routes. The are both identical routers. Each as a HWIC-1T (Smart Serial interface) and a HWIC-3G-HSPA 3G interface. These routers are to be sent to remote sites. We have connectivity to one of the sites but if remote site A gors down we lose connectivity to remote site B. The HWIC-1T is the primary WAN interface using frame relay joining the two remote sites We want the HWIC-3G-HSPA to be usable for direct connectivity from head office to remote site B, and also the HWIC-3G-HSPA is do be used for comms between the remote sites when the frame relay is down (happens quite a bit). I've tried using kron to ping the local HWIC-3G-HSPA interface (cellular 0/1/0) every minute but that hasn't been successful.     I have a some what strange problem (which could have and easy and obvious solution for all I know). My problem is that when I've booted ubuntu (now 10.4 but same problem with 9.10) and turns it off it starts sending a HUGE amount of data via the ethernet cable, so much in fact that my router can't handle it and stops responding. As far as I can tell the computer is completely turned off with no fans spinning. I can add that if I boot windows I do not have this problem, just when exiting ubuntu. There are two "fixes" for my problem: Pull the ethernet cable until the next boot Turn off power to the PSU and wait for the capacitors to unload Is there anyone who knows what could be going on? I'd be happy to post some logs or conf-files. Currently I'm using the ethernet port on my motherboard which is a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an updated version of the BIOS (maybe not the latest but since it only happens when I've been in ubuntu I don't wanna mess with the BIOS too much).     My Windows 7 ate itself, corrupted a few files, now refuses to boot. On the same drive were other directories of various assorted non-Microsoft applications I like to use. After the crash, I have been mounting those from outside (as F:[whatever]). If I go ahead and reinstall Windows 7 on that drive and use the drive again as my primary, will those other directories be visible to it from inside? Meaning if I boot up my new installation of Windows from within that drive, will I be able to see those other old directories via Windows Explorer on the C drive (where any haven't been run over by the reinstalled OS)? I would like to add a checkbox to my preference activity that would either enable or disable receivers. This is for a service which will run in the background, at boot completed, and will depend on two things 1)is the preference true and 2) is wifi enabled. So it would work something like this; user turns on phone boot completed checks if receivers are enabled (set by checkboxpreference) if checkboxpreference is true - looks for wifi if wifi is true - registers receivers Also required would be if wifi or checkboxpreference goes "false", unregister receivers.     I have a Java application which is using a certain Java Runtime Environment. The application uses it's own launcher to startup the java virtual machine. No use of the java.exe, javaw.exe, javaws.exe binaries is being made -- as the application seems to have it's own launcher which is a different executable. This custom launcher is using the rest of the JRE files, such as bin/client/jvm.dll and rt.jar package etc. Now, the problem is that I want to set a boot class path for this custom launcher. The custom launcher does not support the -Xbootclasspath command line parameter, like the default java.exe does. Is there any way for me to set the boot class path now for this java runtime environment? Thanks in advance.     I'm trying to setup a dual boot system with Windows Vista 64 (already installed) and Ubuntu 10.10. I added a new drive which is identical to the one Vista is installed on. When I boot into the LiveCD I can see and mount the second drive and edit it in Gparted. However, when I use the installer it will only bring up the drive that already has Vista installed. I've tried everything I know. I'm not sure if its a BIOS setting or something else I've missed.

  • Windows 7 sometimes boots in VGA mode

    I have an Asus G50VT-x5 laptop with nVidia GeForce9800M-GS graphics. Normally, Windows boots normally, but about 20% of the time (rough estimate), it will boot with the fallback VGA driver, maxing out at 800x600 with no Aero. I've checked the system logs and there is nothing indicating an error loading the nVidia driver. It even specifies in the logs that the Nvidia Display Driver service started successfully, even though it has booted in safe graphics mode. This has been happening for a while, but it's happening a little more often now than it was before. Since the first time my system exhibited this behavior, I have updated my graphics driver a handful of times. I used System Information for Windows to check for problems there, but the only thing that stood out was the following: Core Temperature 4486449 °C (8075639 °F) Shaders Temperature 1171513530 °C (2108724330 °F) I know this reading is incorrect, because my laptop is nowhere near the surface of the sun and my desk has not burst into flames. When it's opererating normally, I get a sane reading like [Core Temperature 58 °C (136 °F)] with no Shaders Temperature listed. All I have to do to resolve the issue is reboot. I have seen no stability issues with the graphics or anything else. A long time ago, I had an issue with this computer where my framerate would suddenly drop during a 3D game from 40fps to <1fps, but after looking at the temperature readout immediately after quitting a game, I removed the bottom panel and blew the dust out of the vent and heatsink. Since then I have no drops in framerate under any situation. I have uploaded a zip containing the SIW reports for when the problem is occurring and when the computer is operating normally. I don't have a paid account so it can only be downloaded 10 times, so please only download the reports if you think you can use them. If you try to download the reports and they are no longer available, please comment and I will re-upload them. If you want to look at the files, they are on Rapidshare. EDIT It happened again, and I looked a little deeper into the System logs. When this happens, there are a lot of errors about other device drivers unable to start. All of these errors are for PnP drivers. Also, my USB keyboard and mouse take a few moments before they actually start working, although this happens sometimes the first normal boot as well. I am quite sure this is related, so I am adding the pnp tag. Also, CHKDSK will not run on boot. Even if a check is scheduled or a volume is manually set as dirty, CHKDSK will be skipped entirely, not even leaving an entry in the System logs. I tried running CHKNTFS /D, which did not work. I then manually changed my HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager BootExecute value to the default listed on Microsoft's website. That did not work either. I ended up booting to repair mode and running CHKDSK there, which found a number of minor inconsistencies on my system drive, but none on my data drive. I have no idea if this is related. Some more information for those who don't download my SIW report file: Antivirus and Firewall are ESET Smart Security I have three different virutalization programs installed: VMware Player, Windows Virtual PC, and VirtualBox. The network adapters for these show up in the log of failed device starts. EDIT 2 I tried running sfc /scannow, which reported that it found corrupted files that could not be fixed. The CBS log is extremely cryptic. I tried booting to my install disk, launching repair mode, and doing an offline sfc from there, which produced the same result.

    I've attached 5 virtual disks to a Virtual Machine in Citrix XenServer. The VM has the xs-tools installed. Initially it said that it couldn't add so many disks. After I installed the xs-tools, it let me add all the disks. But /dev doesn't show all the disks. It shows these: /dev/xvda /dev/xvdb /dev/xvdc /dev/cdrom Perhaps it is bound by the limits of an IDE bus? (3 disks + CD-ROM) If so, how does one change the VM to use SCSI? Edit: According to the documentation: 2.6.3. VM Block Devices In the PV Linux case, block devices are passed through as PV devices. XenServer does not attempt to emulate SCSI or IDE, but instead provides a more suitable interface in the virtual environment in the form of xvd* devices. It is also possible to get an sd* device using the same mechanism, where the PV driver inside the VM takes over the SCSI device namespace. This is not desirable so it is best to use xvd* where possible for PV guests (this is the default for Debian and RHEL). For Windows or other fully virtualized guests, XenServer emulates an IDE bus in the form of an hd* device. When using Windows, installing the Citrix Tools for Virtual Machines installs a special PV driver that works in a similar way to Linux, except in the fully virtualized environment. Still, with 5 virtual disks attached, I don't see the other xvd devices.   • Can't remove GPT data from MBR

    I am having difficulty getting the Ubuntu installer (and gparted) to recognize the partitions on my MBR type disk. Other operating systems and disk tools read the disk structure and the files on it fine. I have used fixparts to write a new MBR but the issue persists. I assume the issue stems from the Protective MBR data still present on the disk but I am at a loss as to how to remove it while preserving my NTFS data partition.
