• SEO: Is promoting your backlinks a good strategy for improving search results for my site's name?

  I run a website that's been around for about three years in the sports space. I am successfully ranking well for targeted keywords, but searching for the name of my site itself returns very poor results - it shows my site, its FB/Twitter, and then 15 pages of unrelated spam that happen to contain two words that, when combined, form my website's name. After that, my backlinks begin to show up spordically. As far as I can tell, I simply don't have enough backlinks and the backlinks I do have are ranked worse than the spam. (Site Explorer lists 200 external links to any page on our domain and 20 external links directly to the front page). To counter this, my strategy is to promote my backlinks so they get a better page rank than the spam. Does that make sense? Am I going in the right direction or should I just focus on getting more backlinks pointing directly to my site? • HP 655 notebook (ubuntu 12.04) keeps consuming energy after closing the lid

  I am unable to change power settings so that when I close the lid the battery stops consuming energy. There are three options in the power settings menu: When the screen is closed: 1 Do nothing 2 Pause 3 Sleep First I could not change anything. I see all the options but I could not click on option 2 and 3. (grey text instead of black) I already made it possible to put in to sleep mode. But I can't pause (suspend) the laptop. Anyone an idea?

• Will C++ remain viable for game engines in somewhat distant future?

  C++11 has opened ways, which were only dreamt by the C++ programmers. It has been three years since I have been learning C++, and I am going well. Now I want to get into vedio games. Every core of the game code I saw, was monstourously writtern in C++. My question is - If I get into serious game engine dev, and perfecting it would take, maybe say 10 years, would we still be writing game engines in C++ ?(newer standard) Or, will John Carmack, write id tech 7 in c++? note - I am strictly talking about game engines.

• Are there any surveys on to what degree developers like or hate scrum ?

  Background: During a conference an analyst pointed out in a tweet that developers hate scrum. Myself and another person responded that this was not the case, and started discussing different scenarios on why developers would dislike scrum. One of the scenarios where that lazy developers are not able to hide in a scrum project. They are constantly challenged by the team to contribute. • nfs mountpoint named ``share'' breaks ls and man

  I mounted a nfs server to ~/share. This works fine as long as I'm at home, where the nfs share is in reach. Whenver I'm not, this seems to break access to all manpages. Using man (or ls in my homedir) waits forever. Checking with strace reveals that they try to access the folder called share. Unmounting fails too. Even with -l (lazy) and -f (force). I am asking for three things here: Is ``share'' a magic name? Does something like MANPATH exist, which I should avoid? How do I unmount without rebooting? (I already commented the share out in fstab) What would you suggest me to do, to have network/position based mounting of NFS shares?

• Leapfrog Crammer won't mount as a USB flash drive

  I can't seem to get the Leapfrog Crammer study and sound system to show up as a flash drive under ubuntu so I can transfer stuff to it. I don't want to install the leapfrog bloatware, can someone help me with this? Additional Information: When I plug my crammer into my computer it shows a 1 MB file system with a link to download the crammer software. I want to know how to access the rest of the crammer's file system so I can transfer music to it. The crammer does not show any other partitions in natulius. According to an article on the internet, the crammed is divided into three partitions: One with a link to install the crammer software, one with all content(music, flash cards, etc.) and one for firmware. I want to know how to access the one with the content so I can add music to the player. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance.

  I am in the pre-coding phase of creating a website. I know that it will be account based (users have to register/login to use the features). I also know that the server will have to do certain operations that are timer based, that is to say that user will have events that will trigger at a point chosen by the user and do something. I am searching for a good choice in server-side technology, and was wondering what my options are and what the best choice is. I would prefer open technology and something that doesn't use interpreted languages (Java, .net). My first thought is PHP + PGSQL for serverside and HTML+CSS+JS for clients, but I am still looking at my options.

• Introduce unit testing when codebase is already available

  I've been working on a project in Flex for three years now without unit testing. The simple reason for that is the fact that I just didn't realize the importance of unit testing when being at the beginning of studies at university. Now my attitude towards testing changed completely and therefore I want to introduce it to the existing project (about 25000LOC). In order to do it, there are two approaches to choose from: 1) Discard the existing codebase and start from scratch with TDD 2) Write the tests and try to make them pass by changing the existing code Well, I would appreciate not having to write everything from scratch but I think by doing this, the design would be much better. • Should i expect real world questions from interviewing agency ? [closed]

  I started coding almost a year ago. By "coding" I mean HTML(5), CSS(3), and only few times I implemented some AJAX and JavaScript. I am interviewing for a position that expects me to know HTML, CSS, JS, JQuery, and AJAX. I feel confident in HTML5/CSS3 subject area and somewhat ok with javascript. Will agency expect from me to write some code during the interview? I do have a live website as an example which contains snapshots of past projects which were sent to them. • How can i distinguish revenue from different folders in Adsense?

  I am currently running three websites using adsense. Since i do this more to be useful than to earn something, i have a subdomain of a free hoster and my websites live in subfolders e.q. mydomain.hoster.com/website1, mydomain.hoster.com/website2, to which i link with .tk aliases. Is there a way to distinguish adsense income from website1 to website 2? I tried using custom channels, but somehow this part of adsense eludes me. Can someone shed some light on this?

• ASP.NET: Including JavaScript libraries conditionally from CDN

  When developing cloud applications it is still useful to build them so they can run also on local machine without network connection. One thing you use from CDN when in cloud and from app folder when not connected are common JavaScript libraries. In this posting I will show you how to add support for local and CDN script stores to your ASP.NET MVC web application. Our solution is simple. We will add new configuration setting to our web.config file (including cloud transform file of it) and new property to our web application. In master page where scripts are included we will include scripts from CDN conditionally. There is nothing complex, all changes we make are simple ones. 1. Adding new property to web application Although I am using ASP.NET MVC web application these modifications work also very well with ASP.NET Forms. Open Global.asax and add new static property to your application class. public static bool UseCdn {     get     {         var valueString = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["useCdn"];         bool useCdn;           bool.TryParse(valueString, out useCdn);         return useCdn;     } } If you want less round-trips to configuration data you can keep some nullable boolean in your application class scope and load CDN setting first time it is asked. 2. Adding new configuration setting to web.config By default my application uses local scripts. Although my application runs on cloud I can do a lot of stuff without staging environment in cloud. So by default I don’t have costs on traffic when including scripts from application folders. <appSettings>   <add key="UseCdn" value="false" /> </appSettings> You can also set UseCdn value to true and change it to false when you are not connected to network. 3. Modifying web.config cloud transform I have special configuration for my solution that I use when deploying my web application to cloud. This configuration is called Cloud and transform for this configuration is located in web.cloud.config. To make application using CDN when deployed to cloud we need the following transform. <appSettings>   <add key="UseCdn"        value="true"        xdt:Transform="SetAttributes"        xdt:Locator="Match(key)" /> </appSettings> Now when you publish your application to cloud it uses CDN by default. 4. Including scripts in master pages The last thing we need to change is our master page. My solution is simple. I check if I have to include scripts from CDN and if it is true then I include scripts from there. Otherwise my scripts will be included from application folder. @if (MyWeb.MvcApplication.UseCdn) {     <script src="http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/jquery/jquery-1.4.4.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> } else {     <script src="@Url.Content("~/Scripts/jquery-1.4.4.min.js")" type="text/javascript"></script> } Although here is only one script shown you can add all your scripts that are also available in some CDN in this if-else block. You are free to include scripts from different CDN services if you need. Conclusion As we saw it was very easy to modify our application to make it use CDN for JavaScript libraries in cloud and local scripts when run on local machine. We made only small changes to our application code, configuration and master pages to get different script sources supported. Our application is now more independent from external sources when we are working on it.

  Our pages can each have many tags, e.g 'football', 'sms', 'nsfw', etc.. wich we would like to track in google analytics. We're already tracking things like category using google analytics custom variables. We've used three of the five available slots so far. How can we track tags the same way? If we just mush them all together - e.g. 'football, sms, nsfw' then can we track the ones that are tagged 'football'? What's the right way to track multi-valued page attributes using custom variables?

• ubuntu installtion problem

  I have one machine in which Windows8 is already installed and having 3 partitions(one for windows OS). Now i wanted to install Ubuntu12.04, i have tried many times but ubuntu 12.04 installer not able to fine those partitions, even it is not recognise windows partition. please refer the images and please help me to solve this issue. Somehow i am not able to update images so i am just explain here. "Installation type " window - this window only shows two options 1)Erase disk and install ubuntu" 2) Something else * here there is no option for "Along with windows 8" option and in second window of "Installation type" it shows Device : /dev/sda freespace 500107 MB *there is nothing else. but i reality there is three partitions and i wanted to install Ubuntu in other partitions. I don't formate windows8. I am new with Ubuntu so please help me to install Ubuntu. Thanks.

  I want to start looking for jobs in great companies and I have four years of enterprise corporations development, three years with C#.NET and alomst one year with Ruby On Rails, JS, etc... But when I look up interview questions from Google, Amazon, Fog Creek, DropBox, etc... they are really targeted at students that are coming fresh out of college and still remember what was Dynamic Programming and Dijkstra algorithms ... but I don't! :( It has been a while for me ... If a I need a sort algorithm I would either Google it or there already is a library and method that does it for me. So what should I do? Do they realize that this guy is not coming from college and will ask more general questions about software architecture or nop! I should go back find my old Data structures book from the storage and read them? In that case wht books and language do you recommend to hone my skills?

• How to display time in the top panel?

  I thought I already had the time up there in the top bar, and it may have been so in previous Ubuntu versions (don't remember, my Ubuntu laptop is just one of three computers I use). Only that I just noticed - me being someone who never wears a watch, has the cellphone turned off 95% of the time and relying on the computer to tell the time - that there is no time being displayed anywhere, and I had expected it in the top bar on the Unity desktop. I searched around but found no obvious solution, but I'm sure someone immediately knows how I can get my time (back?) into the top bar?
