• Entire website in Silverlight 4. Practical or not?

  Similar question: Using Silverlight for an entire website? That question is over 2 years old. Silverlight has gone a long way from Silverlight 1.0 Beta 1 to Silverlight 4.0 Final. Would it be practical to create a full Silverlight web application these days? I plan to deploy the website sometime around Q1 2011. I have thought about going ASP.NET + AJAX way, but it just won't give me the same rich features as Silverlight. A lot of people when they hear ASP.NET or Silverlight instantly think about business or enterprise applications. But all I want to create is a fansite, with rich user interface and a great "WOW" factor.

• Editing a labels text value through JavaScript in VB ASP.NET

  I have a simple form containing two text boxes, I am attempting to apply some validation to the first text box using JavaScript. This is the first time I have attempted this and am having some trouble. I have a label beside the text box stating an error, this labels visibility property is set to False. I wish the labels visibility to turn true if the text box is empty when the user loses focus. For this I have used the onBlur option within the tags of the text box. It then calls the JavaScript function and should set the label to Visible but it does not. I have tested to see if it is entering the function by using an alert instead and that works. The problem seems to be trying to alter the visibility property of the label. • NDjango throws TypeLoadException

  Hi All, I'm just trying to get started with NDjango but am having issues running a basic test app. When running the page in either debug or release the following exception is thrown: Could not load type 'Microsoft.FSharp.Core.CompilerMessageAttribute' from assembly 'FSharp.Core, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a'. This is thrown when the NDjangoHandle is created in the HttpApplication ctor. The fsharp assemblies are definitely all there in the gac (and they seem to be distributed with NDjango too) so I'm a bit confused about this one. Googling this turns up zip. I'm using NDjango 0.9.7.0 for .NET 4.0 in vis studio 2010 Cheers

  I'm trying to learn ASP.NET. I open Visual Studio (this happens in both 2008 and 2010) and creating a new ASP.NET website using .NET 3.5. When I attempt to run the website, a FireFox page opens up and tells me that it can't establish a connection to the server (localhost:####). There's no helpful error message, just "cannot connect." What could be causing this?

In this case, it does trigger the partial postback, but its click event does not fire.   Hello I have an ASP:Repeater Which I would like to display a list of check boxes in. These check boxes are related to a list of user preferences and the users resulting answer. See Code Bellow. I would like to add do one of the following if possible Option 1: It would be great if I could use the Event in the Repeater:OnItemCommand(...) to fire if any of the items change. It would seem to me that this event will only fire if there is a Button | LinkButton | ImageButton item in the list. IE it will not fire if I put in a check box with AutopostBack="True" Option 2: Is there a way I could attach a method to an Event of CheckBox:CheckChanged I would need to pass this method a parameter saying which question/answer combo to change. Option 3: Its your answer if you know an easier way that would be awesome.   Hello, I have C++ project that compiles as DLL Assembly in .NET 3.5 SP1 Project is used for Image rendering processing by using WPF (it loads 2 images from local folder, applies one image on another and saves the output file in the same folder). I want to use that that project as a reference in ASP.NET project to the rendering on the website. So I created simple Web Project in ASP.NET C# that uses C++ project as a Reference. Everything works great in ASP.NET Web Development Server (built-in Web server in VS2008). But once I publish this project to IIS on the same Machine or use IIS for debug instead of built-in Web server Image rendering it's not working anymore. I'm not getting any exceptions or error messages, it just output image is not processes as it supposed to be. If anyone know what could cause that I would really appreciate your insight!

  i'm using the ASP.NET 2.0 Ajax Extensions on a web site. as always, everything is fine on local but the remote web site does not use ajax calls. my local server has the ASP.NET Ajax extensions installed but the remote one doesn't. i know that i should be able to use the Ajax extensions without installing them. so in turn, i added the extensions' .dll among the web site's references but still no luck. after my further investigation, i found out that local and remote pages have exactly the same HTML code rendered, except that the local (working) one has these lines //<![CDATA[ Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager._initialize('ctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$ScriptManager1', document.getElementById('aspnetForm')); Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance()._updateControls(['tctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$updReportArgs','tctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$updReport'], ['ctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$chkTumu','ctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$btnGetir'], [], 90); //]]> obviously, these are the lines of code that make callbacks possible. the question is why doesn't asp.net render these lines? what could be missing? by the way, the ScriptResource.axd and WebResource.axd doesn't give a 404 or anything, i can see through their js codes via Firebug. and one more thing: i'm unsure if it is related or not, but there are client-side asp.net validators on the page whose js code are not rendered either. again, those work fine locally. for further investigation you can see the remote site here : http://www.ajitatif.com/subdomains/nazer/Raporlar/danismanbasarim.aspx

  I'm selecting table data of the current user: SELECT [ConfidenceLevel], [LoveLevel], [HappinessLevel] FROM [UserData] WHERE ([UserProfileID] = @UserProfileID) I have set a control to the unique user ID and it is getting the correct value: HTML: <asp:Label ID="userID" runat="server" Text="Labeluser"></asp:Label> C#: userID.Text = Membership.GetUser().ProviderUserKey.ToString(); I then use it in the where clause using the Configure Data Source window unique ID = control then controlID userID (fills in .text for me) I compile and run but nothing shows up where the table should be. Any suggestions? • How do I get ASP.NET login status controls to display a Log In option?

  I have the following log in status controls on the top of my master page. It displays the logged in as, manager log in, and Log out options. However, when a user is not logged in, there is nothing displayed there. When the user is NOT logged in, is there a way to display a "Login" text link that takes you to the log in page and then "disappears" once the user is logged in? Any help is appreciated.   I have created a Web Control in ASP for use in integrating with Telligent CommunityServer. The control is written in ASP with some 10 lines of C# backend for controlling visibility of the UI elements based on permissions, but I'd say 90% of the functionality is straight-up Javascript. The control works beautifully, until you drop two instances of the Control on the same page--since they reference the exact same Javascript functions, only one control works. How can I take this functionality that I have, this 1200 lines of Javascript, and make it so that each instance of the control can reference its each unique instance of Javascript?

• Where does C# and the .NET Framework fail?

  In my non-programming life, I always attempt to use the approprite tool for the job, and I feel that I do the same in my programming life, but I find that I am choosing C# and .NET for almost everything. I'm finding it hard to come up with (realistic business) needs that cannot be met by .NET and C#. Obviously embedded systems might require something less bloated than the .NET Micro Framework, but I'm really looking for line of business type situations where .NET is not the best tool. I'm primarly a C# and .NET guy since its what I'm the most comfertable in, but I know a fair amount of C++, php, VB, powershell, batch files, and Java, as well as being versed in the web technologes (javascript, html/css). But I'm open minded about it my skill set and I'm looking for cases where C# and .NET are not the right tool for the job. The bottom line here, is that I feel that I'm choosing C# and .NET simply because I am very comfertable with it, so I'm looking for cases where you have chosen something other than .NET, even though you are primarly a .NET developer.

Now, I would assume that this would or should happen: Page loads the first time, the None radio button is checked / defaulted I go and select a different radiobutton in this radiobutton list I do an F5 refresh in my browser The None radio button is pre-selected again after it has come back from the refresh but #4 is not happening. It's retaining the radiobutton that I selected in #2 and I don't know why. I mean in regular HTML it's stateless. So what could be holding this value? I want this to act like a normal input button. I know the question of "why not use an ASP.NET control" will come up. Well there are 2 reasons: The stupid radiobuttonlist bug that everyone knows about I just want to brush up more on standard input tags We are not moving to MVC so this is as close as I'll get and it's ok, because the rest of the team is on par with having mixed ASP.NET controls with standard HTML controls in our pages Anyway my main question here is I'm surprised that it's retaining the change in selection after postback.

• Taking my ASP.NET from my local comp to the server

  Hi All, So I have been developing a small ASP.NET web app in C# for my company over the past few weeks and now I am trying to push it onto our Rackspace server. First step was to create a virtual directory because we want it to be www.ourdomain.com/appname/ and most of the stuff on ourdomain.com is currently in classic ASP. So I did this and then uploaded my stuff to the new folder. I *think* I did this at least semi-right because the error message I am getting is that nice puke color (ASP.NET style instead of classic ASP style) -- problem is it is generic and just saying runtime error. I tried just copy/pasting <customErrors mode="On" /> into the web.config file in the /appname/ directory but nothing changed So the actual questions are: How can I get a more descriptive error, when I was developing locally I just pushed the "play button" in VS2010 and it would either show me the app or tell me where I screwed up Is there anything else I'm doing wrong that may be causing this? If there's things I need to check lemme know!

• Unable to use certain Fonts programatically in ASP.Net

  I am trying to programatically create a bitmap with a specified font in ASP.Net. The idea is that the text, font name, size color etc. will be passed in from variables and a bitmap of the text using the font etc will be returned. It looks like label and input have to be next to each other. Does any ony have a solution how to solve this problem?

• ASP can't connect to SQL Server database

  I'm trying to get a classic ASP application to connect to a local SQL Server 2008 database. The app and database were built by someone else. I'm just trying to get them installed and running on my machine (Windows 7). I'm getting the following error when when the ASP app tries to connect to the database: Could not connect to database: Error Number: -2147467259 Error Message: [ConnectionOpen (Connect()).] does not exist or access denied. I don't see any messages in the Windows Event Viewer. I'm looking at: Event Viewer-Windows Logs-Application. It's a fresh database install using a simple restore. The SQL Server install uses the default instance. SQL Server and Windows authentication are both allowed. I left the existing connection string (in the ASP code) in tact and just tried adding that to my SQL Server installation. Here's the connection string: strConn = "PROVIDER=SQLOLEDB;SERVER=localhost;UID=TheUser;PWD=ThePassword;DATABASE=TheDatabase;" To add that user to SQL Server, I went to Security/Logins in SSMS and added the user and the password. I selected the database in question as the Default database. I thought that might do the trick, but it didn't. Then, I went into TheDatabase, then went into Security there. I added a new user there, referencing the new user I had already added in server Security. Under Owned Schemas, I clicked db_owner and under Role Members I checked db_accessadmin and db_owner. None of this gave the ASP application access to the database. The sid values match in sys.database_principals and sys.server_principals for the login in question. I am able to login to SSMS using this login. The app needs to execute selects against the database like this: oConn.Execute('select * from someTable') I'm not a DBA and am sort of grasping at straws here. How do I get this thing connected? It's showing me following error. Error 1 'ASP.default_aspx' does not contain a definition for 'img_Click' and no extension method 'img_Click' accepting a first argument of type 'ASP.default_aspx' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Please help me to solve this problem.
