• Fiber-Optic Cable Trick Brings Remote Triggering to Older Flashes

  Many older flashes lack for a jack to input a sync cable and rely exclusively on a simple slave mode triggered by the primary flash. This hack uses a piece of scrap fiber optic cable to trigger the flash in bright conditions. Using a flash as an optical slave indoors isn’t much of a problem, but if you introduce bright light (such as outdoor lighting conditions), the ambient light can overpower the small on-camera flash and render the optical slave function useless. To overcome this, Marcell over at Fiber Strobe (a blog dedicated to cataloging experiments in incorporating fiber optics into photography) came up with a simple work around. By using some foam crafting materials and tape, he whipped up a simple mount for a strand of scrap fiber optic cable to connect between the on-camera flash and the sensor on the slave flash. Once attached it works exactly like as sync cable would, except it’s transmitting a pulse of light instead of a pulse of electricity. Hit up the link below for more pictures and a build guide. • Dual LAN Printing

  I want to use Ubuntu 10.10 Server in a classroom, a computer lab whose bandwidth is provided by a local cable ISP. That's no problem, though the school network has an IP printer that I want to use. I cannot reach the printer through the cable Internet. But, I have two network cards. How is it possible to use both networks at once? eth0 (static 192.168.1.254) is plugged into a four-port router, 192.168.1.1. On the public side of the four-port router is Internet provided by the cable company. I also have the classroom workstations plugged into a switch. The switch is plugged into the four-port router. The whole classroom is wired into the cable Internet. The other NIC, eth1, could it be plugged into an Ethernet jack in the wall? It uses the school network, and I might receive by DHCP an IP address like 10.140.10.100, with the printer on maybe 10.120.50.10. I was thinking about installing the printer on the server so that it could be shared with the workstations. But how does this work? Can I just plug eth1 into the school network and access both LANs? • How can I make feasible the deployment of my application on the servers

  I am a Java Web Application Developer. I have an idea for a web application project that I am working on. I personally believe that the app has potential to become a popular website. Currently I am working on it as a developer with two others in the project. The development costs has been almost null uptil now since we are doing in-house development with open source technologies. But the costs are now going to appear as we'll have to host our application online on the servers. Right now I see this as the major expense as we go live. Are there any ways by which we can smartly deal with this hurdle ? We want to minimize the costs as much as possible, or even better, if we can make this null, perhaps, through some partnership agreement with the hosting solutions provider!? • Music but no voices on headphones

  I have a laptop with Windows 7 and I have headphones for a couple of months, and only recently they started to play only the music, while the voices are there, but just very faint. I tried to connect them to another computer (PC, windows XP) and they worked fine, which made me think the problem isn't with the headphones but with the laptop. I've searched online and found a few solutions, none of the seemed to work. Such as: plugging in and out my jack until you can hear better, checking the headphones on other computers. Other relevant info: The headphones come with a mic if I right click the sound icon - sound devices. Then I dont see any 'headphones', not even if I tell it to show disabled devices. All I see is a 'speakers' icon, yet it's there even if the headphones are disconnected, and is always active. So if anyone has any idea I'd appreciate it :) Thanks!

• Wall jacks to patch panel?

  OK, I'm by no means a seasoned networking pro and I had no say so in the design of our current server room which is in dire need of an extreme makeover. Basically, in our server room we have 12 wall plates with 4 RJ-45 ports on each - 48 total RJ-45 ports. From these 48 ports is a spaghetti bowl of network cables feeding our servers located in a rack - there is no patch panel currently, just straight from the wall jack to each server. What I was wondering is, is it feasible to mount a 48 port patch panel in our server rack and feed into this patch panel from the wall jacks (of course nicely routing this cable through some new cable trays)? We really don't have the funds to mount the patch panel and have it fed directly from the switches in the telcom closet which is several hundred feet away. • Reading a large SQL Errorlog

  I came across an interesting situation recently where a SQL instance had been configured with the Audit of successful and failed logins being written to the errorlog. ie This meant… every time a user or the application connected to the SQL instance – an entry was written to the errorlog. This meant…  huge SQL Server errorlogs. • How to move an UIView along a curved CGPath according to user dragging the view

  I'm trying to build a interface that the user can move his finger around the screen an a list of images moves along a path. The idea is that the images center nevers leaves de path. Most of the things I found was about how to animate using CGPath and not about actually using the path as the track to a user movement. I need to objects to be tracked on the path even if the user isn't moving his fingers over the path. For example (image bellow), if the object is at the beginning of the path and the user touches anywhere on the screen and moves his fingers from left to right I need that the object moves from left to right but following the path, that is, going up as it goes to the right towards the path's end. This is the path I've draw, imagine that I'll have a view (any image) that the user can touch and drag it along the path, there's no need to move the finger exactly over the path. If the user move from left to right the image should move from left to right but going up if need following the path. • Nautilus crashes after Ubuntu Tweak Package Cleaner

  Few days ago I started having some problems with nautilus. Basically when I'm trying to get into a folder it crashes. It's not happening all the time, but in 85% it does... Sometimes, after the crash all my desktop icons are also gone. The only thing that I think causes this is Ubuntu Tweak - I'm not sure, but the issues started after I did the Package cleaner from Ubuntu Tweaks... Any ideas? -------- EDIT ---------- First time, after running the command (nautilus --quit; nautilus --no-desktop) 3 times all the system crashed (except the mouse, I could move the mouse). • Glassfish V3 won't start

  I installed NetBeans 6.8 and tried to run the GlasshFish V3 server. I'm working under Windows Vista 32 Bits. First, it won't run. From what I have seen online and on the quick start guide for the speakers, I need to have 3 line out ports on my laptop to use the 5.1 speakers properly. Right now, I have port for 3.5mm jack, one S/P Diff and another for the mic. Can I connect these speakers directly to my laptop without using any other hardware? If I do need some other hardware, what do I need to get?

• GetContactList stops reporting collisions on welded bodies

  I have some strange problem with my game which uses Box2D as physics engine and I'm out of ideas on what I can do to solve it. My game is a class assignment where I need to build a simple game where the main character moves in a 2D environment while square blocks comes from below him. Each time a collision occurs, that block is attached to the character using a weld joint, when three blocks of the same colors are together, they annihilate themselves(an effect similar to Bejeweled). I'm using a recursive function to iterate through all the attached blocks of a given block to see if there are enough blocks for them to be deleted. I'm using GetContactList function to iterate through the list of contacts to see which blocks are adjacent to each other. The results are quite disappointing, the blocks only get annihilated in few cases. After a lot of debugging, I found the issue, but I still don't know how to solve. My issue is: after some time, GetContactList STOPS returning contacts (return NULL) to blocks that were already attached for some time. I spent some time reading the Box2D manual as well as some tutorials and still didn't find any clue of what is happening. EDIT: It's doing something now, but the whole grayscale seems extremely blue. It's like I'm looking at it through dark blue sunglasses. • Interesting SSMS issue with waittype of PREEMPTIVE_OS_LOOKUPACCOUNTSID

  Saw a recent issue with SQL2008 sp 1 where SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) appeared to hang when a DBA expanded the database users tab of a database… ie like this :-   When we looked at the waittype of the SSMS session - via sys.dm_os_waiting_tasks– it was waiting on PREEMPTIVE_OS_LOOKUPACCOUNTSID. I’d not come across this waittype before, and there was very little information out on the web for it.. Looking at this issue using SQL Profiler – it them became apparent that SSMS was waiting on the function SUSER_SNAME. I did a quick test using SET STATISTICS TIME to prove it was the SUSER_SNAME function causing our issue :- SELECT * FROM sys.database_principals   -- completes in 6 milliseconds SELECT SUSER_SNAME(sid),* FROM sys.database_principals  -- completes in 188941 milliseconds. suser_sname validates a sid against Active Directory.. What I haven’t mentioned so far is that the database in question had been restored from a server on a different domain. This domain was untrusted from the current domain. However, it appeared that SSMS was still trying to validate the Windows login of each user when displaying the users list…. and taking a long time to return NULL for each user from the untrusted domain. When all users that had a login from the untrusted domain are removed from the database – this fixed the issue. To find out the users that had this issue :- SELECT name FROM sys.database_principals WHERE type_desc IN(‘WINDOWS_USER’, ‘WINDOWS_GROUP’) and SUSER_SNAME(sid) IS NULL Although I have not raised this as a case with MS – I do think this is a bug in SSMS – I do not see why windows logins should need to be validated when displaying only user details..

Dependent on the use case the session Id is looked up for, the difference may not be important. Another difference however, is of importance. The cookie reading only works if the session Id is added as a cookie to the request, which is configurable for applications in the weblogic-application.xml file. If cookies are disabled, then the server adds the session ID to the request URL (actually it appends it to the end of the URI, so right after the view Id reference). In this case however no cookie is set so that the lookup returns empty. In both cases however, the getId variant works.

• Suppress EXT3-fs warning on mount

  I am familiar with output suppress on Unix machines, ie: cat /file/that/doesnt/exist > /dev/null 2>& However I can't seem to suppress the output of mount when an ext3 filesystem is mounted for the nth time, and it recommends an fsck. As it happens, fscks are run regularly by another machine, so these warning messages are needlessly interrupting the flow of output to my pretty bash script. These are the errors: # mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt > /dev/null 2>& kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds EXT3-fs warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended EXT3 FS 2.4-0.9.19, 19 August 2002 on sd(8,1), internal journal EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. • Should mock objects for tests be created at a high or low level

  When creating unit tests for those other objects, what is the best way to create mock objects that provide data to other objects. Should they be created at a 'high level' and intercept the calls as soon as possible, or should they be done at a 'low level' and so make as much as the real code still be called? e.g. I'm writing a test for some code that requires a NoteMapper object that allows Notes to be loaded from the DB. class NoteMapper { function getNote($sqlQueryFactory, $noteID) { // Create an SQL query from $sqlQueryFactory // Run that SQL // if null // return null // else // return new Note($dataFromSQLQuery) } } I could either mock this object at a high level by creating a mock NoteMapper object, so that there are no calls to the SQL at all e.g. class MockNoteMapper { function getNote($sqlQueryFactory, $noteID) { //$mockData = {'Test Note title', "Test note text" } // return new Note($mockData); } } Or I could do it at a very low level, by creating a MockSQLQueryFactory that instead of actually querying the database just provides mock data back, and passing that to the current NoteMapper object. It seems that creating mocks at a high level would be easier in the short term, but that in the long term doing it at a low level would be more powerful and possibly allow more automation of tests e.g. by recording data in an out of a DB and then replaying that data for tests. Is there a recommended way of creating mocks? Are there any hard and fast rules about which are better, or should they both be used where appropriate?

  I have recently read Miško Hevery's pdf guide to writing testable code in which its stated that you should limit your classes instanciations in your constructors. I understand that its what you should do because it allow you to easily mock you objects that are send as parameters to your class. But when it comes to writing actual code, i often end up with things like that (exemple is in PHP using Zend Framework but I think it's self explanatory) : class Some_class { private $_data; private $_options; private $_locale; public function __construct($data, $options = null) { $this->_data = $data; if ($options != null) { $this->_options = $options; } $this->_init(); } private function _init() { if(isset($this->_options['locale'])) { $locale = $this->_options['locale']; if ($locale instanceof Zend_Locale) { $this->_locale = $locale; } elseif (Zend_Locale::isLocale($locale)) { $this->_locale = new Zend_Locale($locale); } else { $this->_locale = new Zend_Locale(); } } } } Acording to my understanding of Miško Hevery's guide, i shouldn't instanciate the Zend_Local in my class but push it through the constructor (Which can be done through the options array in my example).
