  What would cause the following behavior on an Ubuntu 12.04 system? I've SSHed into a machine as the "ubuntu" user. Running ls -lah /data/* shows dozens of non-empty files (e.g. file1.txt, file2.txt, etc), all owned by the "ubuntu" user/group, and with full read/write access. If I try to cat /data/file1.txt, bash gives me the error "cat: /data/file1.txt: No such file or directory" In short, ls is listing files, but in every other way, the files essentially don't exist. I can't cat them or read them in any way. Even giving all the files 777 permission doesn't change anything. This is really bizarre. What's going on here?

• Splitting up a Rails/Ruby app onto multiple servers

  We recently moved a large application to two machines, both running the same codebase. I. Machine A Web server for public facing application Receives web hook call backs from our ESP Handles a few large, list-processing jobs (uploaded spreadsheets with data) II. Machine B Manages a massive set of (background) jobs but, primarily, focuses on building and assembling newsletters Runs all integration with our NetSuite platform Runs all system maintenance (read: DB) jobs To me, having these two apps running the same codebase (a large, monolithic Rails application) seems 'wrong'. I am wondering if anyone has advice on how to better break up the code for these two apps. While they both need the same DB and, ultimately, the same model code, Machine B has no need for Controllers and Views and it feels wasteful running a full-stack Rails app for its tasks. A couple things came to mind but I'm not sure if I'm trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist: Break the models out into a sub-module on git and include into both apps Build out the Mahcine B app in plain Ruby or a lighter framework like Sinatra (where I could use ActiveRecord with Sinatra in combo with a sub-module for the model folder). I'm new to this scenario and appreciate any and all feedback or direction! Thank you.

• Using group policy preferences to push a file to C:\Windows on a restricted user.

  We have a really old Video learning program that we need to run from the network for our students. However it uses Director Player 6.0 and the students get the error: "Unable to copy the driver file C:\Windows\xobglu16.dll to your Windows directory. Your disk may be full" Now the solution I've read is to copy the files manually to each machine and mark them read-only. I'm trying to do this via GPP, but the Event log is showing an Access is denied error. I believe it is because the student accounts do not have permission to c:\windows. Any ideas on a work around without using a script?

  We had our samba server (ubuntu 8.04 ltr) share fill up the other day but when I went to look at it I cant see any of the shares have to much on them we have 5 group shares and then each users has an individual share one users has 22gigs of stuff a few others have 10-20mb of stuff and everyone else is empty so maybe like 26gigs total I deleted a few files yesterday and freed up about 250mb of space today when i checked it it was completely full again and i deleted some older files and freed up about 170mb of stuff but i can watch it slowly creep down in free space. I keep running a df -h Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 241690180 229340500 169200 100% / varrun 257632 260 257372 1% /var/run varlock 257632 0 257632 0% /var/lock udev 257632 72 257560 1% /dev devshm 257632 52 257580 1% /dev/shm lrm 257632 40000 217632 16% /lib/modules/2.6.24-28-generic /volatile what can I do to try to hunt down whats taking up so much of my hdd? • Why does outlook 2013, after initial setup, always fail to connect to an Exchange server/always ask for a password?

  After installing Outlook 2013 configuring it to connect to an exchange server (details about which, e.g., version, etc., I do not know how to provide) was stressful and the user used outlook without issue for a session. The next time outlook is started this error (Re. subject) occurs. The answer to this question solves the issue, or explains why it is happening (i.e., no one could provide a solution). It is only after outlook is closed and re-opened that it will not connect again to the server. • Page_BlockSubmit - reset it to False, if there is a scenario when page doesn't postback on validation error

  Recently, I was facing a problem where if there was a validation error, and if I changed the state of checkbox it won't postback on first attempt. But when I uncheck and check again , it postbacks on second attempt...this is some quirky behaviour in .ASP.Net platform. The solution was to reset Page_BlockSubmit flag to false and it works fine. The following explanation is from http://lionsden.co.il/codeden/?p=137&cpage=1#comment-143   Submit button on the page is a member of vgMain, so automatically it will only run the validation on that group. A solution is needed that will run validation on multiple groups and block the postback if needed. Solution Include the following function on the page: function DoValidation() { //validate the primary group var validated = Page_ClientValidate('vgPrimary ');   //if it is valid if (validated) { //valid the main group validated = Page_ClientValidate('vgMain'); }   //remove the flag to block the submit if it was raised Page_BlockSubmit = false;   //return the results return validated; } Call the above function from the submit button’s OnClientClick event. <asp:Button runat="server" ID="btnSubmit" CausesValidation="true" ValidationGroup="vgMain" Text="Next" OnClick="btnSubmit_Click" OnClientClick="return DoValidation();" /> What is Page_BlockSubmit When the user clicks on a button causing a full post back, after running Page_ClientValidate ASP.NET runs another built in function ValidatorCommonOnSubmit. Within Page_ClientValidate, Page_BlockSubmit is set based on the validation. The postback is then blocked in ValidatorCommonOnSubmit if Page_BlockSubmit is true. No matter what, at the end of the function Page_BlockSubmit is always reset back to false. If a page does a partial postback without running any validation and Page_BlockSubmit has not been reset to false, the partial postback will be blocked. In essence the above function, RunValidation, acts similar to ValidatorCommonOnSubmit. It runs the validation and then returns false to block the postback if needed. Since the built in postback is never run, we need to reset Page_BlockSubmit manually before returning the validation result.

• Freebsd or Linux? as BGP router over 100mbps

  I am building a server to act as a BGP border router for my 100mbps uplink in ISP. I needs these feature: 1) Dual stack BGP peering/routing (at least 100Mbps, maybe more). 2) Potential full internet BGP feed. 3) Some basic ACL functionality. The hardware is L3426/8G ram. NIC will be on-board dual port Broadcom 5716. I've worked with Linux extensively before and it seems to be able to handle 100mbps, but I heard FreeBSD is faster on networking stuff. Which one should I use? And do we have some performance benchmark numbers out there? Cheers.

• Brand new battery is 100% charged but at 0% capacity

  I just bought a brand new battery to replace one that had seemingly died. I followed the instructions that came with the battery and charged it overnight, then ran my computer on battery until it was in a critical state and charged it overnight again. Now the battery appears to be 100% charged and at the same time at 0% capacity—when it's plugged in it doesn't charge and when it's unplugged the computer immediately goes into low power mode. I've taken the battery out and checked the contacts. I've rebooted the system with and without the battery. Nothing seems to help. I'm not sure if I should blame the battery, the laptop, the charger, or the power management software for this state of affairs. The obvious answer would be the battery but I bought this battery because another year-old battery exhibited similar behavior—I assumed it was dead and a Dell tech came to the same conclusion. I'm loathe to order another new battery without first exploring other explanations. What can I do to diagnose this problem? • Keyboard with normal layout just without numpad?

  Do you know any keyboard that does not have a numpad and, at the same time, is not a compact keyboard? I type a lot and I enjoy using standard full sized keyboards. I am annoyed by the presence of the numpad. I've never used it; it just wastes desktop space! All I could find are (even more annoying) compact keyboards. Sadly those keyboards are so compact that cram the arrow keys and the page up/down keys in a very little space. So, does anyone know a keyboard with a normal layout but without the numpad?

• How to map a key to a file explorer shell extension?

  I have a file explorer shell extension called "Copy File Path" or "Copy Folder Path", depending on which pane I am in in file explorer, which copies the full path of a file or a folder to the clipboard. Because it's very handy for me, I use it many times during the day. To make it more productive, I would like to assign a function key to it instead of using the right mouse click context menu, looking for it in the menu (big menu because of many extensions) and selecting it. The way I want to use it is select the file with the mouse and hit the function key. Is there a utility or tool, tray taskmaybe, which can add this functionality to Windows?

• How to recover data from a failing hard drive?

  An external 3½" HDD seems to be in danger of failing — it's making ticking sounds when idle. I've acquired a replacement drive, and want to know the best strategy to get the data off of the dubious drive with the best chance of saving as much as possible. There are some directories that are more important than others. However, I'm guessing that picking and choosing directories is going to reduce my chances of saving the whole thing. I would also have to mount it, dump a file listing, and then unmount it in order to be able to effectively prioritize directories. Adding in the fact that it's time-consuming to do this, I'm leaning away from this approach. I've considered just using dd, but I'm not sure how it would handle read errors or other problems that might prevent only certain parts of the data from being rescued, or which could be overcome with some retries, but not so many that they endanger other parts of the drive from being saved. I guess ideally it would do a single pass to get as much as possible and then go back to retry anything that was missed due to errors. Is it possible that copying more slowly — e.g. pausing every x MB/GB — would be better than just running the operation full tilt, for example to avoid any overheating issues? For the "where is your backup" crowd: this actually is my backup drive, but it also contains some non-critical and bulky stuff, like music, that aren't backups, i.e. aren't backed up. The drive has not exhibited any clear signs of failure other than this somewhat ominous sound. I did have to fsck a few errors recently — orphaned inodes, incorrect free blocks/inodes counts, inode bitmap differences, zero dtime on deleted inodes; about 20 errors in all. The filesystem of the partition is ext3.

• Differing packages between Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10

  So I've been playing around with VirtualBox and both of the above Ubuntu versions and I've noticed that there are some differences between the available packages when doing a apt-cache search <package>. Some of these I'm sure are obvious, as they potentially only work on their respective systems. But I've noticed specifically several ruby packages differ. So my question is whether or not there's a way to get some of the ruby packages (ruby1.9.1-full for example) which only seem to be available on 9.10 (yup, I did a sudo apt-get update on both 9.10 and 9.04) on my 9.04 system? Is there a way I can just do a kernel upgrade on 9.04, or whatever else may be needed in order to get at these more recent packages?

• Umbraco on Windows 7 64-bit

  I'm trying to install Umbraco CMS on Windows 7 64-bit and I get the following exception: [HttpException (0x80004005): Could not load file or assembly 'ImageManipulation, Version=1.0.2105.41209, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. Failed to grant minimum permission required. The application pool's trust mode is set to 'Full', all the user permissions are just as on other sites hosted on the same machine. I went through all relevant topics on Umbraco's forum, but all advices are about the trust level. How do I fix this?

• My Logitech G35 headphones aren't very loud on Linux (fedora 14) why?

  I have recently purchased a set of G35 headphones. They seem to be very loud when I use them on Windows, but when I try and use them on Fedora 14, they are very quiet and I can't seem to make them louder. I have obviously checked the sound settings in Gnome, and they are all up full. I have got ALSA-mixer installed but seems to make no difference. There doesn't seem to be any specific drivers for these headphones for Linux. Anyone know how to make them go a bit louder?

• Craftsmanship Tour Day 1: Didit Long Island

  On Monday I was at Didit for my first ever craftsmanship visit. Didit seem to occupy a good part of a non-descript building in Rockville Centre Long Island. Since I had arrived early from Seattle I had some time to kill, so I stopped at the Rockville Diner on the corner of N Park Ave and Sunrise Hwy. I thoroughly enjoyed the pancakes and the friendly service. After walking to the Didit office I met Rik Dryfoos, the Didit Engineering Manager who organised my visit, and got the introduction to Didit and the work they are doing. I spent the morning in the room shared by the Didit developers, who are working on some fascinating deep engineering problems. After lunch at a local Thai place I setup a webcam to record an interview with Rik and Matt Roman (Didit VP of Engineering). I had a lot of trouble with the webcam, including losing several minutes of conversation, but in the end I was very happy the result. • Inconsistent black levels in windows 7 media center

  I've got a HTPC running windows 7 64bit, hooked up to a Samsung LCD TV. My problem is different types of video are displaying different black levels on the TV. When I play a bluray through Arcsoft Total Media Theater I have to set the "HDMI Black Level" to "normal" in the TV picture options menu. When I play recorded TV through WMC I have to set it to "low" otherwise the black colors on the video are washed out and grey. Is there any way to configure the system so all videos are displayed with the same black level? The hdmi black level setting is deep in Samsung's menus so it's becoming a chore to keep switching it everytime I watch a different type of video. I'm using an ATI 4670 graphics card with HDMI output going straight to the TV. In the ATI catalyst control center I've got pixel format set to RGB 4:4:4 (Full RGB) since the TV wont allow me to change the HDMI black level if I choose one of the other settings.

• Learning to be a good developer: what parts can you skip over?

  I have set myself the goal of becoming a decent developer by this time next year. By this I mean full experience of the development 'lifecycle,' a few good apps/sites/webapps under my belt, and most importantly being able to work at a steady pace without getting sidelined for hours by some should-know-this-already technique. I'm not starting from scratch. I've written a lot of html/css, SQL, javascript, python and VB.net, and studied other languages like C and Java. I know about things like OOP, design patterns, TDD, complexity, computational linguistics, pointers/references, functional programming, and other academic/theoretical matters. It's just I can't say I've really done these things yet. So I want to get up to speed, and I want to know what things I can leave till a later date. For instance, studying algorithms and the maths behind them is interesting and all, but so far I've hardly needed to write anything but the most basic nested loops. Investigating Assembly to have a clearer picture of low-level operations would be cool... but I imagine rarely infringes on daily work. On the other hand, looking at a functional programming language might help me write programs that are more comprehensible and less prone to hidden failures (at the moment I'm finding the biggest difficulty is when the complexity of the app exceeds my capacity to understand it - for instance passing data around was fine... until I had to start doing it with AJAX, which was a painful step up). I could spend time working through case studies of design patterns, but I'm not sure how many of them get used in 'real life.' I'm a programmer with basic abilities - what skills should I focus on developing? (also my Unix skills are very weak, and also knowledge of Windows configuration... not sure how much time I should spend on that)

  Hi, I have two D-Link AP2100, one is connected to a switch (with cable). The second one I would like to use as a repeater, using the WiFi connection to the first and not connected to the switch. Does anyone know first if this is possible, and second and most important, how does one do it. I have tested to set the second AP in repeater-mode, and it is connected to the first, I have full strength to the second one, but I'm not receiving any IP från the DHCP-server, so no access out. • Declarative View Objects (VOs) for better ADF performance

  Just got back from ODTUG's kscope13 conference which had a lot of good deep ADF content. In one of my session I ran out of time to do one of my demos, so I wanted to share it here instead. This is a demo of how Declarative View Objects can increase your application's performance. For those who are not familiar with declarative VOs, those are VOs that don't actually specify a hard coded query. Instead ADF creates their query at runtime, and it does it based on the data that is requested in your UI layer. This can be a huge saver of both DB resources and network resources. More in the documentation. Here is a quick example that shows you how using such a VO can automatically switch to a simpler SQL instead of a complex join when needed. (note while I demo with 11.1.2.* the feature is there in 11.1.1.* versions also). The demo also shows you how you can monitor the SQL that ADF BC issues to the database using the WebLogic logging feature in JDeveloper. As a side note, I would have loved to see more ADF developers attending Kscope. This demo was part of the "ADF intro" track at Kscope, In the advanced ADF track you would have been treated to a full tuning session about ADF with lots of other tips. Consider attending Kscope next year - it is going to be in Seattle this time.
