    I want to run a shell script over the weekend, but I wanna make sure if the terminal loses the connection, my script won't be terminated. I use nohup for the whole script invokation, but I also want to execute some portion of my shell script in a way that if someone closes my terminal, my script runs on the background still. Here is a simple example : #!/bin/bash echo "Start the trap" trap " " HUP echo "Sleeping for 60 Seconds" sleep 60 echo "I just woke up!" Please suggest what I should do ? The trap " " HUP seems like not working when I close my terminal tab.

  • Software: Launching League of Legends spectator mode from Command Line (Mac)

    Background: tl;dr at the end League of Legends has a spectator mode, in which you can watch someone else's game (essentially a replay) with a 3 minute delay. Popular LoL website OP.GG has figured out a clever way of hosting these spectator games on their own servers, thereby making them replayable, as opposed to only being available while the game is on (as Riot does it). If you request a replay from OP.GG, it sends a batch file which looks for where the League is situated and then the magic happens: @start "" "League of Legends.exe" "8394" "LoLLauncher.exe" "" "spectator fspectate.op.gg:4081 tjJbtRLQ/HMV7HuAxWV0XsXoRB4OmFBr 1391881421 NA1" This works fine on Windows. I'm trying to get it to work on Mac (which has an official client). UserKernel updateandrun lol_launcher LoLLauncher.app is launched first. LoLLauncher is launched by the UserKernel (as we can see from the PPID) The very long command (PID: 24927) is how Spectator mode is launched, and is also launched by UserKernel. Spectator mode is launched in exactly the same way that the OP.GG .bat wanted to, with the only difference that Spectator mode connects to Riot instead of OP.GG's spectate server. I tried attaching GDB to the LolClient, but I couldn't get anything meaningful from it since it's an Adobe AIR application (and I've never used GDB with code other than mine own). Next I ran dtruss -a -b 100m -f -p $PID on everything I could think of: the LolClient, the LolLauncher and the UserKernel and skimmed the half a million lines produced. I found stuff like the GET request used to get the information of the game to spectate, but I could not see any launch of the equivalent of League of Legends.exe with spectator options. Finally, I ran lsof | grep -i lol to see if anything else was opened in the process, but didn't find anything that seemed appropriate. Open were UserKernel, LolLauncher, LolClient, Adobe AIR, LeagueofLegends and then Bugsplat, all of which are expected. None of this seemed especially relevant to figuring out how LeagueofLegends was opened into spectator mode. It obviously can be done, since Spectator mode is accessible from within the client. It seems likely that it can be done from the CLI, since Windows can do it and the clients are supposed to equals. Unless I'm missing something in the difference between how UNIX and Windows handle CLI application launches. My question is if there are any other things I can try to figure out how to launch Spectator mode myself. tl;dr: Trying to get into spectator mode from the CLI. It's possible on Windows (see first code block) but it just restarts League on Mac. What else can I try to find what call is made, and how to reproduce it? PS: Please let me know how I can improve this question or its formatting, I'd love to use StackOverflow/SuperUser, but as the guys said on the podcast this week (Ep. 59) it's very intimidating.     My network shares were mounting fine yesterday.. suddenly they are not. They were mounting fine for the last two weeks or however long since I added them.     When I place the boot CD in my CD drive and boot from it, I get the Ubuntu menu. I have these options Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer Install Ubuntu Check disc for defects Test memory Boot from first hard disk I can use the cursor keys to select them, and I can push F1 for help etc. However, I can not select an option. I've highlighted the first and tried enter, space bar etc. I do have a KVM, so I plugged in a 2nd USB keyboard and tried it but no go either. I can push escape and then got to the prompt. Am I doing something wrong?

    I have two versions of emacs available to me on a locked workstation: $ /usr/local/bin/emacs --version GNU Emacs 22.3.1 $ /usr/bin/emacs --version GNU Emacs 21.4.1 In both cases, my terminal type is xterm when I run either version of emacs. When I run the v21 version of emacs, I get syntax coloring for Perl, HTML, and other modes. When I run the v22 version, I do not get syntax coloring. I would like to migrate from the v21 version because the combination of v21 emacs, GNOME Terminal and GNU Screen is eating Ctrl-arrow key chords, which prevents me from moving quickly between words. (OS X Terminal and GNU Screen do not have this issue.) The v22 version allows use of Ctrl-arrow key combinations with GNOME Terminal and GNU Screen. How do I fix the v22 version (or ask my sys admin to fix) so that it once again highlights syntax and allows me to use Ctrl-arrow key combinations?

  • Dropped Dell XPS has hard-drive trouble

    Yesterday, my mom dropped her laptop to the floor and got the blue screen of death after trying to boot the system. I was able to start a Fedora live CD and get some of her stuff off the hard drive, but I cannot seem to be able to install Windows on it. The installation starts loading files and then the computer turns off. I am thinking that she might need a new hard drive. Any ideas? Edit: I actually was able to boot the Windows XP installation but it is saying that no hard disk is detected. How can this be possible if I was able to mount the drive on fedora yesterday?

  • Dual pane file manager for Mac OS X

    Is there a good customizable dual-pane file manager for Mac like Total Commander / Far Manager in Windows, or like Krusader / Midnight Commander in Linux? I used to work on Windows for quite a while and mostly used Far Manager and sometimes Total Commander, then I switched to Ubuntu Linux and used Krusader, now I switched to Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and I'm having a hard time trying to find a good file manager... Many of the existing applications are trying to replace the Finder with "multimedia capabilities nobody cares about in file manager - IMHO" (Path Finder, ForkLift), some of them are almost good dual-pane file managers (couldn't remember examples), but none of them worked for me mostly because of one reason: I couldn't integrate my file/folder comparison utility (Araxis Merge for Mac) with them... The way it worked for me in Windows and Linux is that I was setting the cursor on one file in the left pane, then setting the right-pane cursor on another file in right pane, then I pressed a hotkey that launched Araxis Merge with those to files/folders comparison results. It was very easy to set up in Far Manager (Windows) and Krusader (Linux, actually in Linux I used "Meld" instead of Araxis Merge...) The tool I'm looking for doesn't necessarily has to be free...   • v2v of RHEL5 box - issues with retaining MAC address

    For the last week we have been troubleshooting a customer's Red Hat Virtual Machine running on ESXi. We've been using Veeam to try to create a replica off-site and have been having getting it to work on a decent schedule and recently we noticed that there were issues with orphaned snapshots while looking at the datastore. You can see several snapshots in the same folder and it's causing issues with replication and backup, so we decided the cleanest way was to v2v the machine to another datastore so that we had a clean single-vmdk setup to work with, this is where our trouble started. We first started off with a v2v using vmware converter and connecting to the powered on machine as we were having issues doing an offline v2v. This copied fine but when I tried to set a static MAC using this article http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=507 the new VM wouldn't take the address, it simply obtained a new MAC, received a dhcp lease and then would only boot up to a blank red screen, never the login screen. So the next step was to do an offline v2v, once we finally got it working. Same thing, followed the kb to the letter and still it wouldn't take the MAC. I then tried it again and upon completion I compared both old and new VMX file, copying every identifier and variable possible, then unregistered both VMs, uploaded the new VMX file and booted, only to see the same results. Finally I did the same as above but I copied the disk using DD to a second attached vmdk and then attached this to the new VM, and still no luck. After downloading the modified VMX file after the first boot and comparing it to the original I created I found that the bios uuid had changed from the one I typed in manually, so I'm assuming this may be the snagging point, but I have no idea. I've never had this issue before on a P2V and I'm just wondering if someone could shed some light on this, maybe it's to do with RHEL licencing?

  • Dell E6400 Display issue - "doubling up" intermittently

    I've got a Dell E6400 It's suddenly developed an intermittent fault with the display Every now and again, it seems to boot up with "double vision" By that I mean, its split horizontally, with each half showing the same thing, but with low resolution, and looks grainy - if that makes sense (I will try to get a couple of pictures if I can) I haven't changed any hardware or anything. I have re-built windows, to see if that fixed the problem, it didn't. I've upgraded the BIOS to see if that would help, still same problem. I'm out of ideas :-(

    Is there any advantage to use a Linux machine to develop instead of Windows? Everyone at work tells me to switch to Linux, since I'm developing hard-core on linux anyway. I manage 40 servers, and do everything from DB to data-backend to developing web services. I don't find anything wrong with Putty. I"m just too lazy to install another OS... What do you guys think?

  • Utility to optimally distribute files onto multiple DVDs?

    I have a bunch of media files which I want to record to DVD, but since each DVD only fits 4.5GB, I have to find the optimal way to organize the files to use the minimum number of DVDs (otherwise the empty space left in each DVD can easily add up). Are there any tools to help with this? Many years ago there was a DOS utility to do this with floppy disks.

  • my server suddenly crashes every 2 days or so. Programmer has no idea, please help find the cause, here is the top

    Every couple of days my server suddenly crashes and I must request hardware reset at data center to get it back running. Today I came back to my shell and saw the server was dead and "top" was running on it, and see below for the "top" right before the crash. I opened /var/log/messages and scrolled to the reboot time and see nothing, no errors prior to the hard reboot. (I checked in /etc/syslog.conf and I see "*.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none /var/log/messages" , isn't this good enough to log all problems?) Usually when I look at the top, the swap is never used up like this! I also don't know why mysqld is at 323% cpu (server only runs drupal and its never slow or overloaded). Solver is my application. I don't know whats that 'sh' doing and 'dovecot' doing.
