  Hi I use autocompletetextview with SimpleCursorAdapter to get data from sqlite. I'd like to get its drop down list started by the entered key. In my autocompletetextview, the list is not shown or filtered by input text. eg, If user enter "an", all text started with "an" will be seen in this list. • How do I vertically align an item within a list using relative layout?

  I am using a list view in Android 1.5 to show a list of images and text next to the image. I am trying to vertically center the text but the text is at the top of the row instead of centered.   Hello, I have <LinearLayout android:id="@+id/LinearLayoutPlayer" xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"> <Spinner android:id="@+id/Spinner01" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="100"></Spinner> <ToggleButton android:text="@+id/ToggleButton01" android:id="@+id/ToggleButton01" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1"></ToggleButton> </LinearLayout> Which displays a spinner and next to it a toggle button. Everything okay so far. Of course the spinner need some entries, so I add to the spinner the attribute: android:entries="@array/myentries" The problem now is that the toggle button is a bit lower than the spinner and the botton of the toggle button is cut off, maybe 3 or 5 lines of pixels. Anyone an idea what is wrong here? Android is version 2.2 Thanks!

  Android SDK documentation says that startManagingCursor() method is depracated: This method is deprecated. Use the new CursorLoader class with LoaderManager instead; this is also available on older platforms through the Android compatibility package. This method allows the activity to take care of managing the given Cursor's lifecycle for you based on the activity's lifecycle. That is, when the activity is stopped it will automatically call deactivate() on the given Cursor, and when it is later restarted it will call requery() for you. When the activity is destroyed, all managed Cursors will be closed automatically. If you are targeting HONEYCOMB or later, consider instead using LoaderManager instead, available via getLoaderManager() So I would like to use CursorLoader. But how can I use it with custom CursorAdapter and without ContentProvider, when I needs URI in constructor of CursorLoader?

• laptop will not boot after attempting upgrade to 13.10

  I wanted to update my OS to the new 14.04 LTS. I was running 12.04 LTS before and followed the advice that upgrades should be done in steps. I first upgraded to 12.10, which seemed to work fine, and later to 13.10. This was all done through the Software Manager. After the last upgrade, I am no longer able to boot up my computer. The GNU GRUB menu opens up, but after selecting Ubuntu, it just stalls with a blank purple screen. If I select one of the other kernels, it also stalls after "Loading initial ramdisk...". I can't get into the Recovery Menu, either. I'm still rather new to Linux and may have possibly made the situation worse. Unfortunately, nothing has worked yet. I tried reinstalling from a flash drive and on my first attempt, the wizard recognised a previous installation. Unfortunately, the wizard also didn't like how my partitions were set up (I didn't change anything) and gave an error before closing. Unfortunately, I didn't write the error down, but it was about the boot partition. On the next attempt and ever since, the installation wizard has stated that "This computer currently has no detected operating systems." This is strange, because I could see the disk and even access my files when booting up from the USB. At this point, I decided to back up my important files using dropbox. Before losing all my files, I wanted to try the Boot-Repair tool, which also produced no results, and the files are no longer visible when booting from USB. The link to the Boot-Repair log is at http://paste.ubuntu.com/7457249/. If I then proceed through to the "Something else" installation option, I can see that the partitions still exist. This is what they look like: /dev/sda free space (size indicated 1MB) /dev/sda1 efi (33MB of 98 MB used) /dev/sda2 efi (352634MB of 746330MB used) /dev/sda3 swap (3725MB, none used) free space (0MB) Is there any way I might be able to get my computer to work and preserve my files as well?

  So, I installed the Android SDK, Eclipse, and the ADT.   I'm senior C++ developer, I have also programmed professionally j2me some years. I'd like to make some apps and widgets for Android and I'd like to read up a bit on this new java stuff Android is using. I have (of course) checked out some tutorials and so but it seems I miss the basics, I can compile some stuff (read: examples) in eclipse but I just don't know how to, for example, add a service or what an 'intent' is, why my widget isn't called but successfully launches the main app when clicked and so on. So, what is a really good book for someone that is a developer but mostly need the hard facts about developing something specific like Android apps & widgets? Thanks a bunch!

For example, CREATE TABLE, DELETE, INSERT, etc. Multiple statements separated by ;s are not supported. I have to load in a batch of records, 1000 and counting. How do I insert these efficiently? • How do I get preferences to work in Android?

  I've really been struggling through this. New to Java/Android. I'm writing my first app and this is the first thing that has taken me longer than a couple days of searching to figure out. Here's the setup: It's a BAC calculator / drink counter: A formula is used to calculate the BAC. Here's the forumla: Bac = ((StandardDrinks / 2) * (GenderConstant / Weight)) - (0.017 * Hours); So as you can see, being able to modify the gender and weight will produce more accurate and personalized results. So I have them as doubles: double GenderConstant = 7.5; //9 for female double Weight = 180; To change these variables I would like the person to be able to go into the settings and choose different values. I have these things set up, but not linked to the variables shown above because I cannot for the life of me figure out how. Here they are: I press the menu button and this pops up. Great. I'll click Settings. Now the preferences pops up. • Upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 on netbook: now or later?

  I began with installing 9.04 in a netbook (Asus EeePC 1000H), upgraded to 9.10 and have now Lucid Lynx 10.04 (LTS). Most things tested run pretty good, with the most notable exception being wireless network due to the hardware which I first tested after the last major upgrade and a few times before giving up (failed to maintain connection to WPA2 networks). Other nuisances are not as important (e.g. some hotkeys work, a couple of them don't), but given that most everything works I'm concerned with doing an upgrade to find most things have been broken and I have to go back and dig up on how to get it to work... Once in a while, I look up for some posts elsewhere to read up on problems and to find out if they're tame enough to justify an upgrade to 10.10. I'm not in a rush, but I'm not interested in being too left behind some time from now that an upgrade becomes too costly or downright impossible (many things formatted too differently). I'm not even sure if it's possible to "easily" upgrade from LTS to LTS release... Therefore I ask if it's (in principle) possible to skip releases and only do a major upgrade much later on. For example, is it possible (or advisable) to do an upgrade only when the next LTS comes out (a couple of years from now)? Or is it preferable not to skip releases at all?

• Listview selects mutliple items when clicked

  I'm trying to make a task manager, and I only have one problem. I have a listview that gets inflated. All the elements in the listview are correct. The problem is that when I select an item, the listview will select another item away. I've heard listviews repopulate the list as it scrolls down to save memory. I think this may be some sort of problem. Here is a picture of the problem. If i had more apps loaded, then it would continue to select multiple at once.   I have 3 lxc containers. They were all working fine on 12.10 and I upgraded the containers with do-release-upgrade on the containers to 13.04 and 13.10 and that worked great. • Why is the upgrade manager freezing when upgrading to 13.10

  Earlier today I started to upgrade to 13.10 only to return much much later and notice that the update manager was still running. It seems to be frozen and I am reluctant to hit ctrl+C. I can't launch nautilus using the icon on the launcher. When I try to run it via the terminal, this is what happens: $ nautilus Could not register the application: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: No such interface `org.gtk.Actions' on object at path /org/gnome/Nautilus My printers aren't showing up when I attempt to print. I don't know whether these a symptoms of the same problem. Should I let the update manage continue to run, or should I shut it down? • Windows 7 x64 "upgrade" repair fails

  I've been running into issues with Windows Update, which I can't seem to fix. The hotfixes don't work, nor does the Windows update readyness tool, or the manual SP1 upgrade. I get various esoteric errors which nobody seems to have a fix for. Looks like some of the update cache is corrupt and digital signatures seem to be broken on some packages / Windows Update components. Long story short, I have discovered the only option is to do a repair operation on the OS, to repair everything. It's so corrupt that only a complete replacement will fix it. According to various sources (including MSKB) one can perform a repair by running an in-place upgrade. I've got the Windows 7 Ultimate retail disc, which I've inserted into my machine. I ran setup.exe and went through in the following order: Install now Go online to get latest updates (I've also tried not getting updates) Wait for updates to be downloaded Select Windows 7 Ultimate (x64 architecture) and click next Accept the T&Cs, click next Click Upgrade At this point it spends a minute on the "checking compatibility" screen, after which I get the following error: The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue. You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or go online to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings. 32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc. It also mentions a warning about potential conflicts with a storage driver and VS2010, but that doesn't seem to be the blocking issue. My currently installed version of Windows is Ultimate 64-bit (absolutely sure of this) and the disc is definitely a x86 / x64 combined Ultimate retail disc. There seem to be a few people who have run into this (e.g. this question), but I've not seen any answers. I've checked the event viewer, but can't spot anything in there that's related. Any idea how I can get this working? P.S: Just to pre-empt the inevitable "are you suuuuuuuuuuuuure it's x64 Ultimate?" questions:
