  • Recommened design pattern to handle multiple compression algorithms for a class hierarchy

    - by sgorozco
    For all you OOD experts. What would be the recommended way to model the following scenario? I have a certain class hierarchy similar to the following one: class Base { ... } class Derived1 : Base { ... } class Derived2 : Base { ... } ... Next, I would like to implement different compression/decompression engines for this hierarchy. (I already have code for several strategies that best handle different cases, like file compression, network stream compression, legacy system compression, etc.) I would like the compression strategy to be pluggable and chosen at runtime, however I'm not sure how to handle the class hierarchy. Currently I have a tighly-coupled design that looks like this: interface ICompressor { byte[] Compress(Base instance); } class Strategy1Compressor : ICompressor { byte[] Compress(Base instance) { // Common compression guts for Base class ... // if( instance is Derived1 ) { // Compression guts for Derived1 class } if( instance is Derived2 ) { // Compression guts for Derived2 class } // Additional compression logic to handle other class derivations ... } } As it is, whenever I add a new derived class inheriting from Base, I would have to modify all compression strategies to take into account this new class. Is there a design pattern that allows me to decouple this, and allow me to easily introduce more classes to the Base hierarchy and/or additional compression strategies?

  • Interfaces on an abstract class

    - by insta
    My coworker and I have different opinions on the relationship between base classes and interfaces. I'm of the belief that a class should not implement an interface unless that class can be used when an implementation of the interface is required. In other words, I like to see code like this: interface IFooWorker { void Work(); } abstract class BaseWorker { ... base class behaviors ... public abstract void Work() { } protected string CleanData(string data) { ... } } class DbWorker : BaseWorker, IFooWorker { public void Work() { Repository.AddCleanData(base.CleanData(UI.GetDirtyData())); } } The DbWorker is what gets the IFooWorker interface, because it is an instantiatable implementation of the interface. It completely fulfills the contract. My coworker prefers the nearly identical: interface IFooWorker { void Work(); } abstract class BaseWorker : IFooWorker { ... base class behaviors ... public abstract void Work() { } protected string CleanData(string data) { ... } } class DbWorker : BaseWorker { public void Work() { Repository.AddCleanData(base.CleanData(UI.GetDirtyData())); } } Where the base class gets the interface, and by virtue of this all inheritors of the base class are of that interface as well. This bugs me but I can't come up with concrete reasons why, outside of "the base class cannot stand on its own as an implementation of the interface". What are the pros & cons of his method vs. mine, and why should one be used over another?

  • Is this a good way to expose generic base class methods through an interface?

    - by Nate Heinrich
    I am trying to provide an interface to an abstract generic base class. I want to have a method exposed on the interface that consumes the generic type, but whose implementation is ultimately handled by the classes that inherit from my abstract generic base. However I don't want the subclasses to have to downcast to work with the generic type (as they already know what the type should be). Here is a simple version of the only way I can see to get it to work at the moment. public interface IFoo { void Process(Bar_base bar); } public abstract class FooBase<T> : IFoo where T : Bar_base { abstract void Process(T bar); // Explicit IFoo Implementation void IFoo.Process(Bar_base bar) { if (bar == null) throw new ArgumentNullException(); // Downcast here in base class (less for subclasses to worry about) T downcasted_bar = bar as T; if (downcasted_bar == null) { throw new InvalidOperationException( string.Format("Expected type '{0}', not type '{1}'", T.ToString(), bar.GetType().ToString()); } //Process downcasted object. Process(downcasted_bar); } } Then subclasses of FooBase would look like this... public class Foo_impl1 : FooBase<Bar_impl1> { void override Process(Bar_impl1 bar) { //No need to downcast here! } } Obviously this won't provide me compile time Type Checking, but I think it will get the job done... Questions: 1. Will this function as I think it will? 2. Is this the best way to do this? 3. What are the issues with doing it this way? 4. Can you suggest a different approach? Thanks!

  • C++ Why is the converter constructor implicitly called?

    - by ShaChris23
    Why is the Child class's converter constructor called in the code below? I mean, it automatically converts Base to Child via the Child converter constructor. The code below compiles, but shouldn't it not compile since I haven't provided bool Child::operator!=(Base const&)? class Base { }; class Child : public Base { public: Child() {} Child(Base const& base_) : Base(base_) { std::cout <<"should never called!"; } bool operator!=(Child const&) { return true; } }; void main() { Base base; Child child; if(child != base) std::cout << "not equal"; else std::cout << "equal"; }

  • Basic SQL query question

    - by user318573
    Hello, I have the following query: SELECT Base.ReportDate, Base.PropertyCode, Base.FirstName, Base.MiddleName, Base.LastName, Person.FirstName, Person.MiddleName, Person.LastName FROM LeaseT INNER JOIN Base ON LeaseT.LeaseID = Base.LeaseID INNER JOIN Person ON LeaseT.TenantID = Person.ID works fine, except there could be 0 to 'N' people in the 'Person' table for each record in the Base table, but I only want to return exactly 1 for each 'Base' record (doesn't matter which, but the one with the lowest Person.ID) would be a reasonable choice. If there is 0 rows in the person table, I still need to return the row, but with null values for the 'person' fields. How would I structure the SQL to do that? Thanks. Edit: Yes, the tables are probably not structured properly, but restructuring at this time is not possible - got to work with what is there.

  • C++ Program performs better when piped

    - by ET1 Nerd
    I haven't done any programming in a decade. I wanted to get back into it, so I made this little pointless program as practice. The easiest way to describe what it does is with output of my --help codeblock: ./prng_bench --help ./prng_bench: usage: ./prng_bench $N $B [$T] This program will generate an N digit base(B) random number until all N digits are the same. Once a repeating N digit base(B) number is found, the following statistics are displayed: -Decimal value of all N digits. -Time & number of tries taken to randomly find. Optionally, this process is repeated T times. When running multiple repititions, averages for all N digit base(B) numbers are displayed at the end, as well as total time and total tries. My "problem" is that when the problem is "easy", say a 3 digit base 10 number, and I have it do a large number of passes the "total time" is less when piped to grep. ie: command ; command |grep took : ./prng_bench 3 10 999999 ; ./prng_bench 3 10 999999|grep took .... Pass# 999999: All 3 base(10) digits = 3 base(10). Time: 0.00005 secs. Tries: 23 It took 191.86701 secs & 99947208 tries to find 999999 repeating 3 digit base(10) numbers. An average of 0.00019 secs & 99 tries was needed to find each one. It took 159.32355 secs & 99947208 tries to find 999999 repeating 3 digit base(10) numbers. If I run the same command many times w/o grep time is always VERY close. I'm using srand(1234) for now, to test. The code between my calls to clock_gettime() for start and stop do not involve any stream manipulation, which would obviously affect time. I realize this is an exercise in futility, but I'd like to know why it behaves this way. Below is heart of the program. Here's a link to the full source on DB if anybody wants to compile and test. https://www.dropbox.com/s/6olqnnjf3unkm2m/prng_bench.cpp clock_gettime() requires -lrt. for (int pass_num=1; pass_num<=passes; pass_num++) { //Executes $passes # of times. clock_gettime(CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID, &temp_time); //get time start_time = timetodouble(temp_time); //convert time to double, store as start_time for(i=1, tries=0; i!=0; tries++) { //loops until 'comparison for' fully completes. counts reps as 'tries'. <------------ for (i=0; i<Ndigits; i++) //Move forward through array. | results[i]=(rand()%base); //assign random num of base to element (digit). | /*for (i=0; i<Ndigits; i++) //---Debug Lines--------------- | std::cout<<" "<<results[i]; //---a LOT of output.---------- | std::cout << "\n"; //---Comment/decoment to disable/enable.*/ // | for (i=Ndigits-1; i>0 && results[i]==results[0]; i--); //Move through array, != element breaks & i!=0, new digits drawn. -| } //If all are equal i will be 0, nested for condition satisfied. -| clock_gettime(CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID, &temp_time); //get time draw_time = (timetodouble(temp_time) - start_time); //convert time to dbl, subtract start_time, set draw_time to diff. total_time += draw_time; //add time for this pass to total. total_tries += tries; //add tries for this pass to total. /*Formated output for each pass: Pass# ---: All -- base(--) digits = -- base(10) Time: ----.---- secs. • What's the outcome if I use free with new or delete with malloc?

    It is a compiler error or runtime error? The code below can be compiled! class Base{ void g(); void h(); }; int main() { Base* p = new Base(); free(p); return 0; } However it can't be compiled with a virtual function if I declare the class Base like this class Base{ virtual void g(); void h(); }; The code below can be compiled all the time, no matter the function is virtual or not. class Base{ void g(); void h(); }; int main() { Base* p = (Base*)malloc(sizeof(Base)); delete p; return 0; }

  • Perl Lingua giving weird error on install

    - by user299306
    I am trying to install perl Lingua onto a unix system (ubuntu, latest version). Of course I am root. when I go into the package to install using 'perl Makefile.pl' I get this dumb error: [root@csisl27 Lingua-Lid-0.01]# perl Makefile.PL /opt/ls//lib does not exist at Makefile.PL line 48. I have tried playing with the path on line 48, nothing changes, here is what line 48-50 looks like: Line 48: die "$BASE/lib does not exist" unless -d "$BASE/lib"; Line 49: die "$BASE/include does not exist" unless -d "$BASE/include"; Line 50: die "lid.h is missing in $BASE/include" unless -e "$BASE/includ/lid.h"; The variable $BASE is declared as this: $BASE = "/opt/ls/" if ($^O eq "linux" or $^O eq "solaris"); $BASE = "/usr/local/" if ($^O eq "freebsd"); $BASE = $ENV{LID_BASE_DIR} if (defined $ENV{LID_BASE_DIR}); Now the perl program I am trying to write simply look like this (just my base): #!/usr/bin/perl use Lingua::LinkParser; use strict; print "Hello world!\n"; When I run this trying to use Lingua, here is my error: [root@csisl27 assign4]# ./perl_parser_1.pl Can't locate Lingua/LinkParser.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.10.0/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.10.0 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.10.0/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.10.0 /usr/lib/perl5/5.10.0/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/5.10.0 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl .) at ./perl_parser_1.pl line 3. • Why `A & a = a` is valid?

    - by psaghelyi
    #include <iostream> #include <assert.h> using namespace std; struct Base { Base() : m_member1(1) {} Base(const Base & other) { assert(this != &other); // this should trigger m_member1 = other.m_member1; } int m_member1; }; struct Derived { Derived(Base & base) : m_base(m_base) {} // m_base(base) Base & m_base; }; void main() { Base base; Derived derived(base); cout << derived.m_base.m_member1 << endl; // crashes here } The above example is a synthesized version of a mistyped constructor. I used reference at the class member Derived::m_base because I wanted to make sure that the member will be initialized as the constructor had called. One problem is that nor GCC nor MSVC gives me a warning at m_base(m_base). But the more serious for me is that the assert finds everything fine and the application crashes later (sometimes far away from the mistake). Question: Is there any way to indicate such mistakes?

  • Which AMI should I use as a base for a Django application?

    - by Edan Maor
    I'm starting development of a Django application, on Amazon's Web Services. I'm looking to build an instance that will serve the Django. I don't have much experience with such things, having only used a shared host before (WebFaction). So I'm wondering, which AMI should I use as a base? I'm assuming I want an Ubuntu AMI, possibly with certain things like Apache pre-installed? One minor point: I'm planning to serve several different Django projects from the same instance. I use virtualenv on my dev machine right now to separate the different projects, I'm assuming I'll do the same on EC2. Thanks!

  • How to fix "could not find a base address that matches schema http"... in WCF

    - by Craig Shearer
    I'm trying to deploy a WCF service to my server, hosted in IIS. Naturally it works on my machine :) But when I deploy it, I get the following error: This collection already contains an address with scheme http. There can be at most one address per scheme in this collection. Googling on this, I find that I have to put a serviceHostingEnvironment element into the web.config file: <serviceHostingEnvironment> <baseAddressPrefixFilters> <add prefix="http://mywebsiteurl"/> </baseAddressPrefixFilters> </serviceHostingEnvironment> But once I have done this, I get the following: Could not find a base address that matches scheme http for the endpoint with binding BasicHttpBinding. Registered base address schemes are [https]. It seems it doesn't know what the base address is, but how do I specify it? Here's the relevant section of my web.config file: <system.serviceModel> <serviceHostingEnvironment> <baseAddressPrefixFilters> <add prefix="http://mywebsiteurl"/> </baseAddressPrefixFilters> </serviceHostingEnvironment> <behaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name="WcfPortalBehavior"> <serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="true"/> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true"/> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> <bindings> <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="BasicHttpBinding_IWcfPortal" maxBufferSize="2147483647" maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647" receiveTimeout="00:10:00" sendTimeout="00:10:00" openTimeout="00:10:00" closeTimeout="00:10:00"> <readerQuotas maxBytesPerRead="2147483647" maxArrayLength="2147483647" maxStringContentLength="2147483647"/> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> </bindings> <services> <service behaviorConfiguration="WcfPortalBehavior" name="Csla.Server.Hosts.Silverlight.WcfPortal"> <endpoint address="" binding="basicHttpBinding" contract="Csla.Server.Hosts.Silverlight.IWcfPortal" bindingConfiguration="BasicHttpBinding_IWcfPortal"> </endpoint> <endpoint address="mex" binding="mexHttpBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange"/> </service> </services> </system.serviceModel> Can anybody shed some light on what's going on and how to fix it? Thanks! Craig

  • Calling a GWT service in a different context than the GWT Module Base?

    - by Epaga
    I have a GWT module with the X-GWT-Module-Base http://host:8080/foo/ and would like to call a (GWT) service which is located at http://host:8080/bar/. The reason is for example that I want to be able to share a GWT service between two different GWT client projects. All I've gotten to work so far is if the service is located within the module context, i.e. http://host:8080/foo/bar works fine, using @RemoteServiceRelativePath("bar") in my service interface. It seems that the @RemoteServiceRelativePath only allows a value relative to the module base URL...so is there some other way to accomplish what I'm trying to accomplish?

  • How to render the properties of the view model's base class first when using ViewData.ModelMetadata.

    - by Martin R-L
    When I use the ViewData.ModelMetadata.Properties in order to loop the properties (with an additional Where(modelMetadata => modelMetadata.ShowForEdit && !ViewData.TemplateInfo.Visited(modelMetadata))), and thereby create a generic edit view, the properties of the view model's base class are rendered last. Is it possible to use a clever OrderBy() or is there another way to first get the properties of the base class, and then the sub class'? Reverse won't do the trick since the ordering of each class' properties is perfectly fine. A workaround would of course be composition + delegation, but since we don't have mixins, it's too un-DRY IMHO, why I seek a better solution if possible.

  • How to access controller dynamic properties within a base controller's constructor in Grails?

    - by 4h34d
    Basically, I want to be able to assign objects created within filters to members in a base controller from which every controller extends. Any possible way to do that? Here's how I tried, but haven't got to make it work. What I'm trying to achieve is to have all my controllers extend a base controller. The base controller's constructor would be used to assign values to its members, those values being pulled from the session map. Example below. File grails-app/controllers/HomeController.groovy: class HomeController extends BaseController { def index = { render username } } File grails-app/controllers/BaseController.groovy: abstract class BaseController { public String username public BaseController() { username = session.username } } When running the app, the output shown is: 2010-06-15 18:17:16,671 [main] ERROR [localhost].[/webapp] - Exception sending context initialized event to listener instance of class org.codehaus.groovy.grails.web.context.GrailsContextLoaderListener org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'pluginManager' defined in ServletContext resource [/WEB-INF/applicationContext.xml]: Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to locate constructor with Class parameter for class org.codehaus.groovy.grails.commons.DefaultGrailsControllerClass ... Caused by: java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to locate constructor with Class parameter for class org.codehaus.groovy.grails.commons.DefaultGrailsControllerClass ... Caused by: java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException ... Caused by: org.codehaus.groovy.grails.exceptions.NewInstanceCreationException: Could not create a new instance of class [com.my.package.controller.HomeController]! ... Caused by: groovy.lang.MissingPropertyException: No such property: session for class: com.my.package.controller.HomeController at com.my.package.controller.BaseController.<init>(BaseController.groovy:16) at com.my.package.controller.HomeController.<init>(HomeController.groovy) ... 2010-06-15 18:17:16,687 [main] ERROR core.StandardContext - Error listenerStart 2010-06-15 18:17:16,687 [main] ERROR core.StandardContext - Context [/webapp] startup failed due to previous errors And the app won't run. This is just an example as in my case I wouldn't want to assign a username to a string value, but rather a few objects pulled from the session map. The objects pulled from the session map are being set within filters. The alternative I see is being able to access the controller's instance within the filter's execution. Is that possible? Please help! Thanks a bunch!

  • C# - What should I do when every inherited class needs getter from base class, but setter only for O

    - by msfanboy
    Hello, I have a abstract class called WizardViewModelBase. All my WizardXXXViewModel classes inherit from the base abstract class. The base has a property with a getter. Every sub class needs and overrides that string property as its the DisplayName of the ViewModel. Only ONE ViewModel called WizardTimeTableWeekViewModel needs a setter because I have to set wether the ViewModel is a timetable for week A or week B. Using 2 ViewModels like WizardTimeTableWeekAViewModel and WizardTimeTableWeekBViewModel would be redundant. I do not want to override the setter in all other classes as they do not need a setter. Can I somehow tell the sub class it needs not to override the setter? Or any other suggestion? With interfaces I would be free to use getter or setter but having many empty setter properties is not an option for me.

  • Is there a reason why a base class decorated with XmlInclude would still throw a type unknown exception when serialized?

    - by Tedford
    I will simplify the code to save space but what is presented does illustrate the core problem. I have a class which has a property that is a base type. There exist 3 dervived classes which could be assigned to that property. If I assign any of the derived classes to the container then the XmlSerializer throws dreaded "The type xxx was not expected. Use the XmlInclude or SoapInclude attribute to specify types that are not known statically." exception when attempting to seralize the container. However my base class is already decorated with that attribute so I figure there must be an additional "hidden" requirement. The really odd part is that the default WCF serializer has no issues with this class hierarchy. The Container class [DataContract] [XmlRoot(ElementName = "TRANSACTION", Namespace = Constants.Namespace)] public class PaymentSummaryRequest : CommandRequest { /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the summary. /// </summary> /// <value>The summary.</value> /// <remarks></remarks> [DataMember] public PaymentSummary Summary { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Initializes a new instance of the <see cref="PaymentSummaryRequest"/> class. /// </summary> public PaymentSummaryRequest() { Mechanism = CommandMechanism.PaymentSummary; } } The base class [DataContract] [XmlInclude(typeof(xxxPaymentSummary))] [XmlInclude(typeof(yyyPaymentSummary))] [XmlInclude(typeof(zzzPaymentSummary))] [KnownType(typeof(xxxPaymentSummary))] [KnownType(typeof(xxxPaymentSummary))] [KnownType(typeof(zzzPaymentSummary))] public abstract class PaymentSummary { } One of the derived classes [DataContract] public class xxxPaymentSummary : PaymentSummary { } The serialization code var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(PaymentSummaryRequest)); serializer.Serialize(Console.Out,new PaymentSummaryRequest{Summary = new xxxPaymentSummary{}}); The Exception System.InvalidOperationException: There was an error generating the XML document. --- System.InvalidOperationException: The type xxxPaymentSummary was not expected. • Secure, simple php faq creating/editing script to base further development off of?

    - by Tchalvak
    I'm looking to build a simple site centered around a simple faq system in php. The faq concept is simple, but I want to have an administrative-access backend for editing and creating the entries, and securing a login seems more complex and time-consuming, so I'm looking for suggestions for code to start me off. Does anyone know of any open source php scripts or snippets that would work as base code for administrative login to some php scripts that could be used as a simple faq system? Or base code for both, the faq php code + web administrative access code?

  • Specify a base classes template parameters while instantiating a derived class?

    - by DaClown
    Hi, I have no idea if the title makes any sense but I can't find the right words to descibe my "problem" in one line. Anyway, here is my problem. There is an interface for a search: template <typename InputType, typename ResultType> class Search { public: virtual void search (InputType) = 0; virtual void getResult(ResultType&) = 0; }; and several derived classes like: template <typename InputType, typename ResultType> class XMLSearch : public Search<InputType, ResultType> { public: void search (InputType) { ... }; void getResult(ResultType&) { ... }; }; The derived classes shall be used in the source code later on. I would like to hold a simple pointer to a Search without specifying the template parameters, then assign a new XMLSearch and thereby define the template parameters of Search and XMLSearch Search *s = new XMLSearch<int, int>(); I found a way that works syntactically like what I'm trying to do, but it seems a bit odd to really use it: template <typename T> class Derived; class Base { public: template <typename T> bool GetValue(T &value) { Derived<T> *castedThis=dynamic_cast<Derived<T>* >(this); if(castedThis) return castedThis->GetValue(value); return false; } virtual void Dummy() {} }; template <typename T> class Derived : public Base { public: Derived<T>() { mValue=17; } bool GetValue(T &value) { value=mValue; return true; } T mValue; }; int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { Base *v=new Derived<int>; int i=0; if(!v->GetValue(i)) std::cout<<"Wrong type int."<<std::endl; float f=0.0; if(!v->GetValue(f)) std::cout<<"Wrong type float."<<std::endl; std::cout<<i<<std::endl<<f; char c; std::cin>>c; return 0; } Is there a better way to accomplish this?

  • Don’t Program by Fear, Question Everything

    - by João Angelo
    Perusing some code base I’ve recently came across with a code comment that I would like to share. It was something like this: class Animal { public Animal() { this.Id = Guid.NewGuid(); } public Guid Id { get; private set; } } class Cat : Animal { public Cat() : base() // Always call base since it's not always done automatically { } } Note: All class names were changed to protect the innocent. To clear any possible doubts the C# specification explicitly states that: If an instance constructor has no constructor initializer, a constructor initializer of the form base() is implicitly provided. Thus, an instance constructor declaration of the form C(...) {...} is exactly equivalent to C(...): base() {...} So in conclusion it’s clearly an incorrect comment but what I find alarming is how a comment like that gets into a code base and survives the test of time. Not to forget what it can do to someone who is making a jump from other technologies to C# and reads stuff like that.

  • Computer Arithmetic - Binary for Decimal Numbers

    - by MarkPearl
    This may be of use to someone else doing this course… The Problem In the section on Computer Arithmetic it gives an example of converting -7.6875 to IEEE floating point format. I understand all the steps except for the first one, where it does the following... 7.6875 (base 10) = 111.1011 (base 2) I don't understand the conversion - I realize that 111 (base 2) = 7 (base 10), but how does the .6875 part relate to the .1011? Or am I totally off track with this? The Solution The fractional part of the decimal to binary conversion is done as follows: 0.6875 x 2 = 1.375 = 0.375 + 1 (Keep the 1 separate) 0.375 x 2   = 0.75   = 0.75    + 0 0.75 x 2    = 1.5      = 0.5      + 1 0.5 x 2     = 1.0       = 0.0       + 1 The bit pattern of 0s and 1s on the right-hand side gives you the fractional part. So 0.6875 (base 10) = .1011 (Base 2) See also Stallings, chapter 19.

  • Perl syntax error [closed]

    - by Linny
    I am a beginner taking a Perl programming course. We are trying to write a basic program for counting nucleotides in a DNA string. I'm getting syntax errors on the lines that have a single bracket on lines 28 & 70 and don't know why. It also reads that I have compilation errors. I have no idea where to start figuring that out. # The purpose of this program is to count the number of nucleotides in a strand. Each protein is counted separately # print "/n NOTE: Nucleotide counting /n"; # use strict; # enforce variable declarations use warnings; # enable compiler warnings # Display number of A,a,T,t,G,g,C,c, nucleotides in a word or sequence of letters. # my ($base) = ''; # an extracted letter from a string my ($nuceotide_count) = 0 ; # the current position within the word my ($position) = 0 ; # number of vowels in user-supplied word my ($word) = ''; # word to be processed my ($A_count) = 0 ; # of A nucleotides in the user-supplied sequence my ($a_count) = 0 ; # of A nucleotides in the user-supplied sequence my ($C_count) = 0 ; # of C nucleotides in the user-supplied sequence my ($c_count) = 0 ; # of C nucleotides in the user-supplied sequence my ($G_count) = 0 ; # of G nucleotides in the user-supplied sequence my ($g_count) = 0 ; # of G nucleotides in the user-supplied sequence my ($T_count) = 0 ; # of T nucleotides in the user-supplied sequence my ($t_count) = 0 ; # of T nucleotides in the user-supplied sequence word = (STDIN) for ($position = 0);($position if (($base eq 'a') or ($base eq 'A')) { ++$A_count; } # end if ++$position; if (($base eq 'T') or ($base eq 't')) { ++$T_count; } end if ++$position; if (($base eq 'G') or ($base eq 'g')) { ++$G_count; } # end if ++$position; if (($base eq 'C') or ($base eq 'c')) { ++$C_count; } # end if ++$position; } # end for # Display final results. # print " \n The number of A or a neucleotides is: $A_count"; print " \n The number of T or t neucleotides is: $T_count"; print " \n The number of G or g neucleotides is: $G_count"; print " \n The number of C or c neucleotides is: $C_count"; print " \n\n Program completed successfully. \n" ; exit ;
