• What companies do what I'm interested in? [closed]

  I'm a systems guy. People change their concentrations to avoid taking operating systems, while I took it during my first semester after transferring. I'm taking compilers and networks now, and I think they're awesome. And yet there are so many job postings looking for people to do work in things like web development, and so few postings looking for people to work in kernel hacking or network engineering. What sorts of companies do these things? I'm currently awaiting a contract in the mail for an internship with VMWare, so I'm not out of a job for the summer. Still, I'd like to companies do these things.

  I have websites that needs an SEO expert to make them on the top of Google searching result based on some keywords, or at least the first page, the websites are created using common open source platforms (wp, joomla, or magento, zencart) I want to post a job on oDesk but I have no idea on how this particular type of requirement works? what would the guy do on my website? will I be asked to spent extra advertisement money? How do I know s/he really did anything on my site and what have been done? if it's just to optimize URL to make it meaningful then I don't need that, and I am sure giving every page's URL an alias is not enough to make the site popular. Beside, I want to know how much it roughly costs and how long it takes. It would be great if you can shed me some light, thank you in advance.

  If a programmer contacts you and asks to contribute to your project, how do you handle it? You don't know if this guy is any good. Perhaps he'll be more trouble than he's worth. He might be trying to attach his name to a successful project just for the kudos. He might be trying to take the project in a direction you don't really want, adding features you think aren't worth the extra complexity. Or, he might be a very useful contributor. You just don't know. How do you handle such requests from people you don't know (On GitHub, specifically, if that makes any difference)? What's the etiquette here?

  So bassicly this is the problem quoted from my teacher : "You have to write a program in C++ that computes the minimal and the maximal value of function f(x,y) obtained on an integer point in a given rectangle [a, b] x [c, d]. Your program should prompt the user to input numerical values of a, b, c and d, as floating point numbers, which are expected to be in a range from -100 thru 100. In case when minimal or maximal values do not exists, your program should output appropriate messages. f(x,y)=x+x*x+x*x*x+y+y*y " So before anyone tell me that i should try do it myself , i'll tell them that ive been trying to do it myself for the past 8 days but my deadline is aproaching and i just cant figure it out its a really simple program but i just cant understand it ... I wont post my attempts because all i saw in these forums is that when someone posts their try and a milion people start to say dont look it this way thry this and bla bla and the guy who posted it was just wondering for minor thing ... so what ever thank you all in advance and thats it :)

• Matrix camera, movement concept

  I was talking to some guy. He said that my movement concept in game is bad. When left or right arrow is pressed I'm scrolling background what makes you feel that player is moving (player's X remains same). So... he told me something about matrix view. I should create all walls and platforms static and scroll only the camera and move player's rectangle. I did a little research in Google, but nothing found. Can you tell me anything about it? How to start? Maybe links, books and resources? My programming language is Java (2d). Thank you!

  This question already has an answer here: Is there a simple way to stop enemies standing in the same spot? 8 answers i am making a top down game which lots of enemies are chasing one guy. then,enemies would move to one point without any collision,they just overlay each other. so ,is there any simple way to make them feel more real? make them not overlay with each other? ================================= i have tried the solution using boundbox to check collision, but i still very puzzled about what to do with the collision. i have a bad solution.it doesn't work well. my solution in simple: foreach(around_enemy_arr in other) { vector a = normalize(self.positionvector - other.positionvector); self.move_vector = self.move_vector + a; } this can work,but when plenty of enemies come very close to each other,they would shake. i am sooooo confused. please help.

• Securing User Account Details with MySQL

• The Developer's Conference Florianópolis, Brazil

  by guest blogger Yara Senger With over 2900 developers in person and another 2000 online, The Developer's Conference (TDC) in Florianópolis, Brazil, reminds us that Java is BIG in Brazil. The conference included 20 different tracks, and Java was the most popular track. Java was also a big part of the talks in the IoT, Cloud and BigData tracks. Here's my overview (in Brazilian Portguese): Several JUGs were involved in TDC Florianópolis, serving as track leads, speakers and all-around heros, including SouJava SouJava Campinas GUJava Santa Catarina JUG Vale JUG Maringá Java Bahia GOJava (Goinia) JUG Rio do Sul RS Jug (Rio Grande do Sul) and I thank them for their support and commitment. It is a vibrant and fun community! We saw that the IoT space is maturing rapidly. There are already some related to embedded in the region.  Java Evangelist Bruno Borges and Marco Antonio Maciel gave a view popular talk "Java: Tweet for Beer!" They demonstrated how to make a beer tap controlled by Java and connected to the Internet, using a visual application JavaFX with Java SE 8, running on a Rasperry Pi. Of course, they had to test the application quite throughly.   We Brazilians are training the next generation of Java developers. TDC4Kids was as big success. We made a tour with the kids in all booths and almost everybody talked about Java. Java in government managment (Betha), Java on the 2048  (Oracle), Java on the popcorn machine and Java training (Globalcode & V.Office) and of course: Java & Minecraft! OTN's Pablo Ciccarello was there to support the community.  He did several video interviews with JUG leaders and speakers (mine included). • Configuring keyboard input to eliminate unused diacritics

  I'd like to change the way diacritics work under Xubuntu. My problem My native language is pt-BR and my notebook has an american keyboard. Thus, I use ' and " followed by keys like u and c to achieve things like ú, ç and ü. It all works well. However, in the case of apostrophes and quotes, that creates a problem when I use ' followed by: letters that won't accept the acute accent ( ´ , ACUTE ACCENT -- 0x00B4) at all, like t; and letters that won't accept the acute in pt-BR, like r. In 1, ' with t does absolutely nothing. In 2, ' with r creates r (LATIN SMALL LETTER R WITH ACUTE -- 0x0155), which is used, afaik, for some eastern european languages like slovak. It isn't used in portuguese, just like ?, s, z, ?, ?, ?, n and all consonants (portuguese do not take diacritics in consonants). Question That said, is there a way to better support the portuguese-brazilian language using an american keyboard? It is very common here --- I actually prefer the american keyboard to our own, known as “ABNT”. Desired solution I'd like to deactivate unused diacritics, so case 2 would behave just like case 1. Additionally, if possible, I'd like case 1 to behave like it does under Windows. As an example, typing ' followed by t should write 't (acute followed by T) instead of doing nothing. About 2, in my humble opinion, doing nothing is counterproductive. I realize the behavior is reasonable according to logic ("there isn't t-acute, so please tell the computer to typeset apostrophe --- ', SPACE --- instead of acute). But from a human, practical point of view, I think it makes more sense (to me, at least). Additional comments I believe this also applies to spanish, french, italian and other western european latin languages. On the console (Ctrl+Alt+F?), case 1 is not a problem. I don't need to press space as apostrophes are automatically added. However, there, I'm unable to access cedilla (ç). Two completely different behaviors. If it's just a matter of customizing text config files (possibly creating a custom layout or whatever), I'd be glad to share my efforts. I just need guide on the "howto" part. Somehow Google only points me to the "enough" people (those who cope with the situation and think that it works "well enough"). And since I have definitely migrated to Linux/Xubuntu after years, I'd like to leave just as I like it (and I'm sure others as well). For example, if there is some kind of scripting or definition to tell the computer to do what I described, so be it.

• JavaOne 2012: Camel, Twitter, Coherence, Wicket and GlassFish

  Before joining Oracle as Product Manager for WebLogic and GlassFish for Latin America, at the beggining of this year I proposed two talks to JavaOne USA that I had been presenting in Brazil for quite a while. One of them I presented last year at ApacheCon in Vancouver, Canada as well in JavaOne Brazil. In June I got the news that they were accepted as Alternate Sessions. Surprisingly enough, few weeks later and at the same time I joined Oracle, I received the news that they were officially accepted and put on schedule. Tomorrow I'll be flying to San Francisco, to my first JavaOne in the United States, and I wanted to share with you what I'm going to present there. My two sessions are these ones: Wed, 10/03, 4:30pm - CON2989 Leverage Enterprise Integration Patterns with Apache Camel and TwitterOn this one, you will be introducted to the Apache Camel framework that I had been talking about in Brazil at conferences, before joining Oracle, and to a component I contributed to integrate with Twitter. Also, you will have a preview of a new component I've been working on to integrate Camel with the Oracle Coherence distributed cache. Thu, 10/04, 3:30pm - CON3395 How Scala, Wicket, and Java EE Can Improve Web DevelopmentThis one I've been working on for quite a while. It was based on an idea to have an architecture that could be as agile as frameworks and technologies such as Ruby on Rails, PHP or Python, for rapid web development. You will be introduced to the Apache Wicket framework, another Apache project I enjoy working with and gave lots of talks at Brazilian conferences, including JavaOne Brazil, JustJava, QCon SP, and The Developers Conference. You will also be introduced to the Scala language and how to create nice DSLs to boost productiveness. And last but not least, the Java EE 6 platform, that offers an awesome improvement from previous versions with its CDI, JPA, EJB3 and JAX-RS features for web development. • How to provide an own UIWindow subclass as the main window in an iPhone app?

  For inspecting all events posted to the views of the window, I want to make a subclass of UIWindow and make that -keyAndVisible in the app delegate. However, my project already came with an nasty MainWindow.xib file ;-) so I find it hard to do that now, since that nib guy is creating the window. Is there any way I can get rid of this MainWindow.xib? Or is there another way to have an subclass of UIWindow in place?

• Mysql password hashing method old vs new

  I'm trying to connect to a mysql server at dreamhost from a php scrip located in a server at slicehost (two different hosting companies). I need to do this so I can transfer new data at slicehost to dreamhost. Using a dump is not an option because the table structures are different and i only need to transfer a small subset of data (100-200 daily records) The problem is that I'm using the new MySQL Password Hashing method at slicehost, and dreamhost uses the old one, So i get $link = mysql_connect($mysqlHost, $mysqlUser, $mysqlPass, FALSE); Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: OK packet 6 bytes shorter than expected Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: mysqlnd cannot connect to MySQL 4.1+ using old authentication Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: Access denied for user 'nodari'@'localhost' (using password: NO) facts: I need to continue using the new method at slicehost and i can't use an older php version/library The database is too big to transfer it every day with a dump Even if i did this, the tables have different structures I need to copy only a small subset of it, in a daily basis (only the changes of the day, 100-200 records) Since the tables are so different, i need to use php as a bridge to normalize the data Already googled it Already talked to both support stafs The more obvious option to me would be to start using the new MySQL Password Hashing method at dreamhost, but they will not change it and i'm not root so i can't do this myself. Any wild idea? The guy at dreamhost support insist saying thet the problem is at my end. But he said he will run any query I tell him since it's a private server. So, I need to tell this guy EXACTLY what to run. So, telling him to run SET SESSION old_passwords=0; SET GLOBAL old_passwords=0; SET PASSWORD FOR 'nodari'@'HOSTNAME' = PASSWORD('new password'); grant all privileges on *.* to nodari@HOSTNAME identified by 'new password'; would be a good start?
