  • Is it possible to keep mysql migration running without keeping connection open?

    ALTER TABLE can easily take a few days - and during this time there's a non-negligible chance of connection getting terminated due to network problems. Is it possible to start ALTER TABLE (or CREATE TABLE ... SELECT ...; or some other very long running query) and leave it running without keeping connection open all the time? (the obvious solution of screen + console mysql client won't easily work as there's no ssh running on that server, only mysqld).

    Hi experts, Assuming you've already had a chance to look through the lambda syntax proposed for Java7 (and the other things that have happened with Java, after Oracle has bought Sun + obvious problems in Java Community Process), what do you think is the future of Java language? Should I, as a Java greenhorn, invest time in learning Java language (not talking about the core JVM, which definitely will survive anything, and worth investments), or concentrate on Scala, Groovy, or other hybrid languages on the JVM platform (I've came into Java world from PHP/Ruby).   • TextBox is not showing new value in code-behind

    I have created a asp:TextBox. its disabled. but its values is changed via javascript. When i click a button to get the updated value in that textbox it always show me empty (""). In my Page_Load i am doing everything in if(!Page.IsPostBack) so there is no chance of updating TextBox value on postback in Page_Load. Where i could be wrong? how can i get updated value?

    Assuming there are a number of load-balanced web servers in a web farm, is it safe to use DateTime.Now in the application code for getting the system date/time or should we leave this responsibility to the database server? Would there be a chance that machine date/time settings on all servers in the webfarm are out of sync? If date/time will be the responsible of the DBMS, how will this strategy work if we have load-balanced replicated DBs?

    Let me see if someone would mind clearing up this elementary point about md5 and hashing. If you only use the first 4 bytes of an md5 hash, would that mean theoretically only 1 in 255^4 chance of collision. iow is that the intention with it (and other hash algorithms) - that you only have to use a small portion of the returned hash (say the hash is of a file of some size).

    My problem is this I have a base page that creates content dynamically. There are buttons on my Master Page that fire events that my base page needs to know about. But the OnLoad function on my base page fires before my Button_Command function on my master page.
