• Xubuntu 12.04 : Random boot to black screen

  My xubuntu 12.04 has worked flawlessly since install in September. However, lately I randomly have the following boot issue : The computer boots to grub, and after choosing xubuntu either boots normally or boots to a black screen. Here are some observations I have made : The black screen seems to happen randomly. The black screen does not seem to happen in safe mode (- nomodeset in grub). The black screen does not allow me to ctrl + alt + F1-6 into a terminal. The black screen allows me to use SysRq keys (Alt + SysRq + K does not work though). The black screen often happens on first boot in several hours and the computer usually boots normally after a RSEINUB. When the computer boots I get "SP5100 TCO timer: mmio address 0xfec000f0 already in use" at startup and "Could not write bytes: broken pipe" at shutdown. However research on these errors did not yield answers to my particular issue. Comparing Xorg.0.log (successful boot) and Xorg.0.log.old (black screen), and reading the answers to similar problem, it seems that I might have a X driver issue. However the system worked flawlessly since lately. Additional info on my system : ACER AO722 C62kk Operating system : 3.2.0-31-generic ubuntu Edit : I made a fresh install of Xubuntu 12.04 x64, the issue is still there ... (I have a separate /home so config. files were not erased). Edit 2 : I followed troubleshooting blank screen, so my new observations are without quiet and splash in grub : When the system boots normally, the screen goes black after grub then lights up and displays text information then goes to login screen. (After that the desktop starting time vary substantially, which is new and may be a separate issue ?). When the boot fails, after grub the screen goes black, lights up, goes black, lights up again and most times goes black again. At this point it responds to Alt+SysReq K by lighting up but no more, and has to be rebooted through Alt+SysReq+ RSEINUB. Thank you for your time and attention in advance ! Thibaud Ruelle

• How to run installation CD for second monitor?

  I am running ubuntu 14 off of a live USB. I have a second monitor that I would like to use while using ubuntu. It has an installation cd that you have to install before using, and when I click on the .exe file the Archive Manager tries to open it and says an error occurred while loading the archive. Thanks for the help. Edit: additional information It just doesn't show up when when I'm in the display settings area. I press the locate(name is probably something else) monitor button too. I know it needs the CD because when I was using it with Windows it didn't work until I went through the installation process on the CD. If ubuntu doesn't use .exe files is there a way to use the CD still? Monitor info from label: -acer LCD monitor -model number: S200HQL Version: S200HQL bd I connect it to my computer using a VGA cord which is connected to a j5create VGA to USB adapter. • Strange behavior in networking between 64bit and 32bit

  I'm having a strange behavior about my network setup. I have 2 laptops, one (Lenovo) with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and another (Acer) with Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit and a wireless router. I'm connecting these 2 using the router but with a strange behavior. I can ping both machines, as well as the router, but when i try to access their shared folders (\\computer_name\shared_folder) the connection starts to fail and I need to reboot both machines to get it working again. But this only happens sometimes, sometimes it works.

• Blank screen after Switch User or Resume

  About half the time when I switch users or resume from standby or resume the screen goes blank (black). If I work the cursor keys I can hear the system bell when it gets to the end of the user list. I can also successfully login, going from memory, but screen stays black. Sometimes closing and re-opening the lid will light up the screen again. Pressing the special Function key to enable/disable external monitor connection has no effect [Fn]-[F5],[Fn]-[F6]. If none of the previous work I need to put the computer into hibernation or full power off to restore screen function. If I watch closely when switching users I think I can see the screen initially start to light up and then quickly fade to black. The computer is an Acer Aspire 3500, model ZL6, running Ubuntu 10.10 installed 2 days ago. No proprietary drivers are in use. I'll provide a list of hardware details as soon as I can figure out how to generate that (didn't there used to be an entry for hardware details under the System menu?). Possibly related questions: No resume after Hibernate or Standby When I resume from suspension - the screen is blank Switch user fails to complete successfully For what it's worth, blank after resume also used to happen occasionally when the laptop was running XP-Home, but nowhere near as often, perhaps 6 or 8 times a year. UPDATE: I found System Administration System Testing and ran the Monitor test. It went very very dark, but the window elements could be discerned, and the whole screen flashed (from very very dark to black). On the third repeat of that same test the screen went to full blaupck and stayed there. Moving the mouse, via touchpad, or touch keys did not wake it up again. I had to close the lid and put the computer into hibernate, and press the power button to restore it. • Black stripe appears to the right of the screen, impossible to get rid of

  After clicking the "Auto Config" button on my Acer AL2216w screen a stripe appeared on the right of the screen where the screen doesn't "exist" and I can't seem to take the screen viewport back even by using the OCD setting and moving it to the right. The left part of the screen is also hidden and I'm not able to see what's going on there. The PC is connected to the screen through a DVI adapter and a VGA cable. I also use multiple monitors and this is the second monitor. Anyway this seems not to be a related issue, as this used to happen even when I only had a single monitor. I managed to fix this issue once but it was more than two years ago and I can't remember what I did, and out of all of the things I've tried so far (connecting the screen to another PC and performing auto adjustment, switching the cables, etc.) none worked. • Picasa installs but is missing in the menu

  Acer Aspire One Netbook Running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 (freshly installed) 1 GB Ram 150 GM HDD Space I am trying to install Picasa and when I do, it runs its course telling me that it has been installed. But when I try to look for Picasa to run it, it didnt show in the menu anywhere. I am unable to find Picasa on my system and it says that it has been installed already when I try to reinstall it. I have tried a few things; looked for the key: wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | apt-key add - .. and then added it. tried the following commands after adding Picasa to my source list: sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install picasa and here is what I got: swapnil@iva-swapo-netbook:~$ sudo apt-get install picasa Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done picasa is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded. and when I tried to look for Picasa again.. I couldnt find it. So I am unable to install Picasa on my system. Please help. (I am also running this thread on ubuntu forums and havent got the solution yet so I am now here) tried Jorge's solution and it brought Picasa immediately, however I am unable to keep it in the launcher. There is no such option. All I can see is only 2 options: 1. Wine 2. Quit Still need help to keep it in the menu/launcher !

• how can I fix error: hd0 out of disk?

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a netbook - Acer AS 1410. After a download session, I restarted the computer and it said: error: hd0 out of disk. Press any key to continue... I pressed everything, but it's just frozen there. Any idea what's wrong with it and what I can do to fix it? I haven't been able to run my computer at all since it's frozen like that. Help please! • Wammu - USB Device Name?

  I'm trying to get to my phone's filesystem through USB in Wammu, but I'm stuck in the configuration wizard when it asks for a USB device name. After about an hour of Internet searching, here are the failed solutions I've already tried, starting with the relevant information returned by lsusb in terminal. lsusb Bus 001 Device 003: ID 12d1:101e Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. So I tried opening Wammu through sudo wammu in terminal and inputting "/dev/bus/usb/001/003" as the device name, which returns: Error opening device Device /dev/bus/usb/001/003 does not exist! and then "/dev/bus/usb/001/", which returns: Failed to connect to phone Description: Error opening device. Unknown, busy, or no permissions.<br> Function: Init<br> Error code: 2 Another proposed solution was to try "tail -f /var/log/messages" in terminal. But that only returned a "No such file or directory" message. • Debian Testing install USB menu does not respond to keyboard

  I'm trying to install Debian Testing onto my Acer Aspire One ZG5 using the testing versions of boot.img and debian-testing-i386-CD-1.iso. I previously installed (two days ago) the latest release of stable, and the boot.img/CD1 from that worked fine, and installed seamlessly. With testing though, the menu does not respond to the keyboard as soon as the menu appears to select Install/Graphical install/Help, etc. I have also tried to boot with an external (USB) keyboard, which again, works fine with the stable version of boot.img/CD1, but not testing. I did some searching and couldn't find anything that looked similar. Any ideas?

Update: Changed to ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_ON_AC=1 in /etc/laptop_mode/laptop-mode.conf, now it is turned on always. But I can't turn it off with laptop_mode stop force, it stays turned on anyway. How do I turn it off again?

• Error- D:\ is not accessible. Access is denied

  All of the sudden the D drive gives me an error when I try to open it: D:\ is not accessible. Access is denied. I have files on the drive that I would like to recover, so I do not want to reformat the drive. It acts almost like the computer doesn't recognize the drive. I have a feeling it's something with security settings, I may have accidentally changed something on the drive. I'm running on a Acer Aspire laptop on Windows Vista, SP2. I beleive both the C and the D drive run off of the same disk drive. At least that's all the Device Manager shows. So correct me if I'm wrong, but that would make it a partitioned drive.

• Radeon HD 5770 - DisplayPort Problem

  I am trying to set up 3 monitors with the Radeon HD 5770 I recieved a few days ago. I have read that I can use 2 DVI ports and an active DisplayPort adapter for a third DVI monitor. I have purchased this adapter: http://www.accellcables.com/products/DisplayPort/DP/dp_dvid.htm I have the two normal DVI monitors working, but when I try to extend the display to the third, I get a message saying the system has detected a problem with the connection through the display port which may limit resolution/refresh rate. I know that all the cables are fine, I have replaced the adapter, the monitors all work, I have tried different monitors through the adapter, and even nothing but the adapter, but I cannot get any monitor to work using it. I am trying to use 2 Dell monitors and an Acer. Have I overlooked something? Is there a compatibiliy issue I missed? Any suggestions as to what I could try? Thanks in advance.

  Hello all, When i got home from work yesterday i couldn't logg in on my account on my desktop pc (Acer Aspire M5620). The reason for this was that when i was typing, more diggets would appear than i pressed. After logging on an account that required no password (my Dad's) i found out that some of my key bindings were messed up. For instance when typing: W --- qwe would appear q --- qw + right mouse e --- we a --- as s --- asd d --- sd z --- zx x --- zxc c --- xc Moreover pressing: 1 --- 12 2 --- 123 3 --- 23 I am typing this from my Dad's laptop (which is working like a charm). I was wondering if anyone has seen this problem before and thus knows a way to fix it. I'm not the brainy type when it comes to computers. • How do I fix a garbled screen on a Gateway LT3103u?

  I've been having garbled screen problems on a Gateway LT3103u on Ubuntu for a while. I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 and continue to have issues. I installed xubuntu-desktop in case the issues had to do with the sophisticated GNOME graphics. The problem is less bad, but it's still there. After a few minutes of using XFCE, the screen gets garbled. I assume this has something to do with the graphics card, but I don't know how to go about troubleshooting something like this. Where should I start? Update 2: It is possible to use this fix for Nvidia card (GTX 260) when graphics is defective after 11.10 upgrade/install? First few restarts was graphic ok, then after few restarts begins suddenly be defective and it stay so. I must returned to 11.04 because this problem and I wait for 12.04. So I hope in this fix.

  Hi everyone, I am looking for a new laptop/netbook and I have two simple requirements: must be small (10-12in screen) and light (<=3-3.5pounds); must work with a dock into which I can put a PCI or PCI Express card. Basically, I have no performance requirements. Discontinued or low-end are fine. All I want is something easy to carry that when at work I can use a PCI/PCI Express card with to do multi-head. Eg, if an Acer Aspire 1410 fitted the second requirement I would by one in a blink. The only solution with which I am acquainted are Thinkpads that can go into the Thinkpad Advanced Dock. Do other laptop (or netbook brands) also offer the possibility of using Although this is not a "requirement" per se, I would rather hear about options that would not involve buying the latest-greatest-+$2k model... : ) Thank you for any advice! ~lara

• Old notebook internal display randomly not recognized

  I have an old Acer TM4001 notebook. If the laptop is powered-off, with the lid closed, when I power it on, it generally works. Then, without touching anything, if I reboot the computer the internal display wil not work anymore. To make it working again I need to shut down the pc, close and reopen the lid and then turn it on. If I close and reopen the lid if it is not working after power the pc on, it won't work. When the screen is working, closing and opening it has no effect (the data cable seems ok). The external monitor always works as expected: If the internal display is not detected, the external will be the main (and only) display. This is not OS-related. When the screen is not working I cannot see the POST. What could be the cause for this?

I activated nvidia_current and nvidia_current_updates from additional drivers 2.) sudo nvidia-xconfig 3.) then reboot Following these steps I got following errors 1.) my resolution is 640x480...(there is no option of 1366x768 in display...previously there was 1366x768 when nvidia-xconfig command was not entered) 2.) when I open nvidia-settings it shows me following error "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root) and restart the X server." Problem need to be solved 1.) Change resolution to 1366x768 2.) Also how to check my nvidia graphics working or not Please some one please help me to solve these issues...I am seriously in need of my graphics card... I wan't my nvidia graphics card work as my intel graphics smoothly I am not willing to use bumblebee with regards, ubuntu user

• Install full version of Unity on Chrome OS using crouton

  I have an Acer Chromebook. Using crouton, I installed Ubuntu (unity) on it. I am pretty familiar Ubuntu 12.04. But the installed one is very minimized package. My fonts are missing and I manually installed language pack for Korean but still browser can't display Korean characters. Is there a way to install the whole packages via crouton like when you install Ubuntu 12.04 with the CD? Or is there a script that installs the missing packages on the bare Ubuntu? Thanks. Sam

• How do I re-enable the backlight?

  Since Oneiric, if I leave my machine (HP Mini 110 netbook) unattended and it goes into power-save mode, the backlight gets disabled. How can I turn it back on? Note that the keyboard backlight controls (Fn+F4 and Fn+F3) don't have any effect in this situation. I've already filed a bug, but filing a bug doesn't fix my problem. I tried this workaround posted in this bug report dealing with Acer laptops: sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=0 However, if anything, that command makes things worse. In the general case, I can see a little bit if I'm in a dark room with a flashlight aimed just so. But after running setpci I can't see anything. And I find the setpci documentation to be utterly incomprehensible, so I don't know whether I need to tweak my command somehow or whether I'm completely barking up the wrong tree. Update: I've found a workaround: I'm now booting with the kernel parameter acpi=off. This disables power management, which prevents the machine from going into power saving mode and thus failing to come back up correctly. Of course, not having power management means that I can't use suspend or do anything to manage power other than powering it off (even then, I have to manually use the power switch). Also, it prevents me from using Unity 3D or Gnome Shell, forcing me into Unity 2C or Gnome Classic. So, I'd really like to be able to stop using this hack.

• Reverse WiFi to Broadcast connection coming from a USB device

  I am using the app called Clockworkmod Tether. It connects using a script ( command line " gksu ./run.sh " ) on the computer. All my programs connect to the internet perfectly, minitube, midori, transmission torrents. But the network manager does not show any connection, wired or wireless. So this may cause issues? What I want to do is take this connection, and be able to share it some way, any way, by wireless. This Acer Timeline "Aspire 5810TZ" does have an Ethernet, so wired out to a router might be an option. But I would prefer to simply reverse the Wireless card to broadcast out to about 2 or 3 devices. Is this possible? Yes I have taken a look at the other questions already posted here, but the answers are 1 year old or older, and not clear at all. I am moderately comfortable (4.5 out of 10 ) on the command line. But pretty much need line by line directions for what commands are needed and what order, ect. Edit I have already tried the method of "Left click network manager, Create New Wireless Network" It is created fine, and I am able to connect to it with a tablet, but am un-able to get an outside connection with it. Using the "Shared to other computers" option because DHCP doesn't seem to work, and WEP Passphrase Security. I get an IP address on the connected device. But as I said, won't bring up any outside webpages or the like. So perhaps this is the wrong approach?

• Properly configuring Linux keyboard on my laptop

  Hey! I have a ps/2 keyboard connected to an Acer Aspire 1694 WLMI via a ps/2 to usb converter. The laptop is running Ubuntu 9.04. The keyboard is a HP model number: SK-250C. I have configured in the 'Keyboard Preferences' the layout to HP SK-250x Multimedia Keyboard. The big problem is when I press certain keys (like for example the arrow keys) I get the 'Save Screenshot' dialog. This is really getting annoying, sometimes I am tying to write an address in browser and just want to go back a few letters and can't. There are other keys that trigger the dialog also (windows key, insert key, home key, page up and page down key, delete key, end key) All works fine If I use the laptop keyboard, but I really want to use the HP keyboard. EDIT: I was testing this and it seems that if I have the 'Num Lock' key turned off the keys work properly. Strange but true!!

• Blank pale blue screen with Live USB Kubuntu on AMD Sempron 2800+ processor

  I am trying to install Kubuntu onto a USB stick to use on my Acer Aspire 1362 laptop with an AMD Sempron 2800+ chip. Using Windows XP, I downloaded and saved to the laptop's hard drive: kubuntu-2.04.1-desktop-i386.iso from the GetKubuntu website and LinuxLive USB Creator 2.8.16.exe from the Linux live website I then installed the latter and ran it, installing the kubuntu onto the Memory stick. Leaving the Bios setup unchanged, the USB stick is ignored and Windows boots. If I change the Bios boot order so that the memory stick takes precedence, I see a dark blue screen announcing Kubukntu 12.04, and on selecting either “live Mode” or “Persistent mode”, messages flash by quickly, some of which appear to be error messages, including “trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs”, “cannot allocate resource for mainboard”, “no plug and play device found”. Eventually I see a pale blue screen with four moving dots announcing Kubukntu 12.04, similar to the login screen of my Kubuntu desktop, but no invitation to log in or indeed any dialog. After several minutes, this changes to a black screen with more messages including “no caching mode present”, “ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready”, then degrades to a blank pale blue screen which can only be moved by switching the computer off. Finding no way to log the error messages passing by, I managed to photograph most of them, but know no way to attach the photo to this forum. As suggested by User 68186 (to whom thanks!), I have edited my original post to reflect the recent progress, so the following two comments are now superseded.
