  • Where can I find up-to-date information / walkthroughs on VS 2010 deployment?

    I am looking for information on deploying my web app to our test server. Having heard Hanselman say this is something you can do within VS 2010 easily I set out too find information on exactly how to do this but can not seem to find anything. Ignoring the fact that most of the blog posts / articles are over a year old, there just seems to be no clear step by step information on how to do this. Has anyone found the light? where did you learn this information? If not, an exception occurs complaining that the service is terminated because of doing nothing. Secondly, the service can be hooked up to windows smoothly. However, the service terminates a short while after it is started. I looked into the process monitor, only the service process stays alive for that short while, the javaw process never showed up, however. Is there anyone who knows how this can be fixed? It works fine in an ordinary console environment. I think it has something to do with Windows service.

    We are using TfsDeployer and PowerShell script to remove the folders ising Remove-Item before deployment of a new version. Sometimes the PS script failed with the error Remove-Item : Cannot remove item Services\bin: The process cannot access the file Services\bin' because it is being used by another proc Get-ChildItem -Path $Destination -Recurse | Remove-Item <<<< -force -recurse + CategoryInfo : WriteError: (C:\Program File..\Services\bin:DirectoryInfo) [Remove-Item], IOException FullyQualifiedErrorId : RemoveFileSystemItemIOError,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.RemoveItemCommand I’ve tried to follow the answer from PowerShell remove force to pipe get-childitem -recurse into remove-item. get-childitem * -include *.csv -recurse | remove-item ,but the error still happens periodically. We are using unlocker to manually kill locking application, (it’s usually w3wp), but I prefer to find automated solution. Another (not ideal) option is to-suppress-powershell-errors get-childitem -recurse -force -erroraction silentlycontinue Any suggestions are welcome.

  • Unable to load type error in ASP.NET 4 application on Windows Server 2003 / IIS6 -- only happens after first worker process recycle

    I'm running an ASP.NET 4.0 web application on IIS6 (Windows Server 2003 x64). This app is one of many running on this server under the Default Web Site -- but is alone on it's own application pool because the other sites are all running ASP.NET 2.0 still. When I deploy my application, it works just fine until the application pool recycles or kills its worker process (by default 2 hours or 20 minutes with no activity). After this, I get the error: "Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. System.Reflection.ReflectionTypeLoadException: Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information." Refreshing the page, recycling the application pool, and iisreset do nothing. But, I can bring the site back online again for a little while by simply redeploying it. Is there any way to modify the environment variables that get sent to the external process? Ideally I'd be able to make them visible only to the process that's running, but if I have to programmatically set them system-wide, I'll settle for that (but, would UAC force me to run as administrator to do that?)   • Apache2/mod_fcgid/PHP Process Limits Not Respected

    I've recently moved to Apache2 / mod_fcgid / PHP from nginx / php_fpm. This is the second server on which I've made this migration, but it's used much less frequently than the first, which is working like a charm. The problem is in the PHP processes that it's spawning. In looking at the mod_fcgid documentation, it appears that the default for killing idle processes is 300 seconds; I've changed that to 20. At this point, I'd be fine if 300 would work - but it's not happening.     I've always been curious about How exactly the process looks in memory? What are the different segments(parts) in it? How exactly will be the program (on the disk) & process (in the memory) are related? I found this excellent article that cleared most of my queries: http://www.linuxforums.org/articles/understanding-elf-using-readelf-and-objdump_125.html In the above article, author shows how to get different segments of the process (LINUX) & he compares it with its corresponding ELF file. I'm quoting this section here: Courious to see the real layout of process segment? We can use /proc//maps file to reveal it. is the PID of the process we want to observe. Before we move on, we have a small problem here. Our test program runs so fast that it ends before we can even dump the related /proc entry. I use gdb to solve this. You can use another trick such as inserting sleep() before it calls return(). In a console (or a terminal emulator such as xterm) do: $ gdb test (gdb) b main Breakpoint 1 at 0x8048376 (gdb) r Breakpoint 1, 0x08048376 in main () Hold right here, open another console and find out the PID of program "test".     Can an unreleased COM pointer to an external process (still alive) cause that process to hang on destruction? Even with TerminateProcess called on it? Process A has a COM interface pointer reference to Process B, now Process B issues a TerminateProcess on A, if some COM interface pointer to Process B in Process A is not released properly, could it be that the process hangs on termination?

  • How to establish a two-way communication between Activity and Service in different process?

    Hi everyone, I'm working on establishing a two-way communication between an Activity and a Service which runs in a different process. Querying the process from the Activity is no big deal. But I want the process to notify the Activity on events. The idea behind it is this: the service runs independently from the actual app. It queries a webserver periodically. If a new task is found on the webserver the process should notify the activity. I found this thread over at AndDev.org but it doesn't seem to work for me. I've been messing around with BroadcastReceiver. I've implemented an interface which should notify the Activity but the problem is that the listener is always null since the Broadcast from the process is done via Intent, hence the class that extends BroadcastReceiver will be newly instantiated. How can I establish a 2-way communication? This has to be possible. Thanks for any help, steff

  • What makes deployment successful for some users and unsuccessful for others?

    I am trying to deploy a Visual C++ application (developed with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008) using a Setup and Deployment Project. After installation, users on some target computers get the following error message after launching the application executable: “This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.” Another user after installation could run the application properly. I cannot find the root cause of this problem, despite spending several hours on the Visual Studio help files and online forums (most postings date back to 2006). Does anyone at Stack Overflow have a suggestion? Thanks in advance. Additional details appear below. The application uses FLTK 1.1.9 for a GUI library, as well as some Boost 1.39 libraries (regex, lexical_cast, date_time, math). I made sure I am trying to deploy the release version (not the debug version) of the application. The Runtime library in the Code Generation settings is Multi-threaded DLL (/MD). The dependency walker of myapp.exe lists the following DLLs: wsock32.dll, comctl32.dll, kernel32.dll, user32.dll, gdi32.dll, shell32.dll, ole32.dll, mvcp90.dll, msvcr90.dll. In the Setup and Deployment Project, I add the following DLLs to the File System on Target Machine: fltkdlld.dll, and a folder named Microsoft.VC90.CRT with msvcm90.dll, msvcp90.dll, mcvcr90.dll and Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest. The installation process on the target computers getting the error message requires having the .Net Framework 3.5 installed first. Any suggestion? Thanks in advance!

  • IE9 development tools giving "Unable to attach to the process." error

    Notice: I have now rebuilt my machine to remove this bug, so I can no longer verify any answers. I recently installed Internet Explorer 9, and activated the development tools by pressing F12; I then clicked "script" and the "start debugging" button but I got the following error: Unable to attach to the process. Another debugger might be attached to the process. I get this message regardless of the site I am on (currently I'm on google.com). I have no other applications running, and have rebooted my machine. Can anyone suggest why this may be appearing?

  • How to set a low process priority for everything spawned from a command prompt in XP?

    As a developer, once or twice a week I run a full build on my XP dev machine. This will run at 100% cpu for 30 or 40 minutes, making my machine usless for anything other than basic browsing & email. Is there anyway I can specify that for a given process (i.e. a command prompt) it and any process spawned by it will hae a lower priority, say taking up no more than 60 - 70% of CPU, leaving my machine more usable. I don't mind the build talking 30 or 40% longer, if I still have use of my machine while it's running. Thanks BW P.S. I'd love to be able to throw more hardware at the problem, but that isn't under my control.

    I'm looking for a simple and effective way of measuring total bytes received/sent from a single process upon its termination. Basically, I am looking for a tool which has the interface similar to "time" and "/usr/bin/time", e.g. measure-net-data <prog_to_run> <prog_args> Received (b): XYZ Sent (b): ABC I know that there are many tools for bandwidth/network monitoring, but as far I can tell all of them are performing the measurements it real-time, which is inappropriate not only because of overhead but also because of the inconvenience - I would need to stop the program, capture the output of the tool and then kill it. I have seen that newer versions of Linux 2.6.20+ provide /proc/<pid>/io/ which contain the information I'm looking for; however, everything under /proc/<pid> when the process terminates, so I'm again back to the same problem as with any network monitoring tool.

  • Visual Studio Deployment Package - change the file structure the .zip creates?

    Everything works as expected but I would like to improve the directory structure that the .zip produces. When I create a deployment package I have it create in a custom directory which works fine but the .zip it creates is in the structure of: content/c_c/users/pcName/documents/VS2010/Projects/ProjectName/obj/release/package/packageTmp Only in the packageTmp directory do I get to the files I want! Is there a way for the created zip to not include all of those empty directories?

    I know it's possible to deploy earlier versions of the .NET framework using AD deployment, for example: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc160717.aspx. How do it do this for .NET 4? I tried unpacking the standalone .NET 4 installer and deploying the netfx_Extended_x86.msi package. This didn't work. After a reboot the event log shows that it tried but it failed to install with a message saying to run setup.exe.

    I have some issues with my graphics card and I want to disable Hardware Acceleration for java apps. Everything that uses HA is displayed blurry. I've seen some tutorials on how to set this parameter -Dsun.java2d.d3d=false The problem is that the Java Control panel itself is using hardware acceleration and I cannot see anything in order to add this parameter. Edit: Went to java control panel in safe mode, added that parameter and problem continues..
