• Which frameworks (and associated languages) support class replacement?

  Hi, I'm writing my master thesis, which deals with AOP in .NET, among other things, and I mention the lack of support for replacing classes at load time as an important factor in the fact that there are currently no .NET AOP frameworks that perform true dynamic weaving -- not without imposing the requirement that woven classes must extend ContextBoundObject or MarshalByRefObject or expose all their semantics on an interface. You can however do this with the JVM thanks to ClassFileTransformer: You extend ClassFileTransformer. You subscribe to the class load event. On class load, you rewrite the class and replace it. All this is very well, but my project director has asked me, quite in the last minute, to give him a list of frameworks (and associated languages) that do / do not support class replacement. I really have no time to look for this now: I wouldn't feel comfortable just doing a superficial research and potentially putting erroneous information in my thesis. So I ask you, oh almighty programming community, can you help out? Of course, I'm not asking you to research this yourselves. • My Android XML files can't find ActionBarSherlock themes

  I'm trying to develop an app with ActionBarSherlock and everything works except the theming. Specifically, I can import com.actionbarsherlock.app.*, extend SherlockActivity, but I always have this error in my manifest: Error: No resource found that matches the given name (at 'theme' with value '@style/Theme.Sherlock'). I know there have been plenty of questions asked about this, but they have not worked for me. I have tried refreshing the workspace cleaning all of my projects putting the line in both the <activity> and the <application> setting my targetSdkVersion and minSdkVersion to various values, in both my manifest and ABS's and I've tried the following variations, and probably others: android:theme="@style/Theme.Sherlock" android:theme="@android:style/Theme.Sherlock" theme="@style/Theme.Sherlock" theme="@android:style/Theme.Sherlock" theme="@theme/Theme.Sherlock" theme="@android:theme/Theme.Sherlock" It's worth noting that the autocomplete after I typed "@style/" was showing nothing, so I tried making my own style in styles.xml and then that showed up but still nothing from ActionBarSherlock. Also, in styles.xml, I tried to make my own theme to extend Theme.Sherlock, and @style/Theme.Sherlock was not found there either when I tried to add it as a parent. I tried loading the samples but got a JAR Mismatch. My conclusion is that somehow my xml files are unable to access the ABS library, but I'm at a loss as to how to fix it. Any help hugely appreciated.

• PHP package manager

  Hey, does anyone know a package manager library for PHP (as e.g. apt or yum for linux distros) apart from PEAR? I'm working on a system which should include a package management system for module management. I managed to get a working solution using PEAR, but using the PEAR client for anything else than managing a PEAR installation is not really the optimal solution as it's not designed for that. I would have to modify/extend it (e.g. to implement actions on installation/upgrade or to move PEAR specific files like lockfiles away from the system root) and especially the CLI client code is quite messy and PHP4. So maybe someone has some suggestions for an alternative PEAR client library which is easy to use and extend (the server side has some nice implementations like Pirum and pearhub) for completely different package management systems written in PHP (ideally including dependency tracking and different channels) for some general ideas how to implement such a PM system (yes, I'm still tinkering with the idea of implementing such a system from scratch) I know that big systems like Magento and symfony use PEAR for their PM. Magento uses a hacked version of the original PEAR client (which I'd like to avoid), symfony's implementation seems quite integrated with the framework, but would be a good starting point to at least write the client from scratch. Anyway, if anybody has suggestions: please :)

• Liskov Substition and Composition

  Let say I have a class like this: public sealed class Foo { public void Bar { // Do Bar Stuff } } And I want to extend it to add something beyond what an extension method could do....My only option is composition: public class SuperFoo { private Foo _internalFoo; public SuperFoo() { _internalFoo = new Foo(); } public void Bar() { _internalFoo.Bar(); } public void Baz() { // Do Baz Stuff } } While this works, it is a lot of work...however I still run into a problem: public void AcceptsAFoo(Foo a) I can pass in a Foo here, but not a super Foo, because C# has no idea that SuperFoo truly does qualify in the Liskov Substitution sense...This means that my extended class via composition is of very limited use. So, the only way to fix it is to hope that the original API designers left an interface laying around: public interface IFoo { public Bar(); } public sealed class Foo : IFoo { // etc } Now, I can implement IFoo on SuperFoo (Which since SuperFoo already implements Foo, is just a matter of changing the signature). public class SuperFoo : IFoo And in the perfect world, the methods that consume Foo would consume IFoo's: public void AcceptsAFoo(IFoo a) Now, C# understands the relationship between SuperFoo and Foo due to the common interface and all is well. The big problem is that .NET seals lots of classes that would occasionally be nice to extend, and they don't usually implement a common interface, so API methods that take a Foo would not accept a SuperFoo and you can't add an overload. So, for all the composition fans out there....How do you get around this limitation? The only thing I can think of is to expose the internal Foo publicly, so that you can pass it on occasion, but that seems messy.

• Seam @Factory in abstract base class?

  I've got a series of web actions I'm implementing in Seam to perform create, read, update, etc. operations. For my read/update/delete actions, I'd like to have individual action classes that all extend an abstract base class. I'd like to put the @Factory method in the abstract base class to retrieve the item that is to be acted upon. For example, I have this as the base class: public abstract class BaseAction { @In(required=false)@Out(required=false) private MyItem item=null; public MyItem getItem(){...} public void setItem(...){...} @Factory("item") public void initItem(){...} } My subclasses would extend BaseAction, so that I don't have to repeat the logic to load the item that is to be viewed, deleted, updated, etc. However, when I start my application, Seam throws errors saying I have declared multiple @Factory's for the same object. Is there any way around this? Is there any way to provide the @Factory in the base class without encoutnering these errors?

• How does mercurial's bisect work when the range includes branching?

  If the bisect range includes multiple branches, how does hg bisect's search work. Does it effectively bisect each sub-branch (I would think that would be inefficient)? I'm wondering if I can just throw the first "good" marker way back past some nest of merges without thinking about it much, and whether that would save time and give correct results.

• extending the delphi TEditCopy action to also copy listbox items to clipboard

  I have a form with most of its functionality implemented using standard TAction. I have a menu, a toolbar, and some toobuttons. I have implemented clipboard copy/paste with no code at all, just using TEditCopy and TEditPaste actions. It works perfect in the TEdit and TMemo boxes I have. Now, I want it to work with TListBox, too. Specifically, I want to be able to copy the selected list item in a TListBox using the very same menuitems, key shortcuts and toolbuttons. So, I believe I will need to extend the TEditCopy Action. But it doesn't seem very straight forward to me. In particular, the TEditAction checks for the focused control to be a TCustomEdit control, which a TListBox it is not. I am a little affraid that it will be just too much work. The obvious alternative is to just forget about the standard actions and implement the copy to clipbard in the OnExecute method of a generic TAction. But, before giving up, do you have some idea, hint or trick that would help me extend the standard TEditCopy action?

  After hours and hours trying to do this, I need your help. I have to models : Project and Task. A project hasMany tasks and a task belong to a project. Everyting works well if you don't use a store to save these models. I want to save both tasks and projects in two stores (TaskStore and ProjectStore). These stores use a LocalStorage proxy. • CSS to create curved corner between two elements?

  My UI has an unordered list on the left. When a list item is selected, a div appears on the right of it. I'd like to have a curved outer corner where the <li> and the <div> meet. See the white arrow in the image below. To extend the blue <li> to the edge of the <ul>, I'm planning to do something like this: li { right-margin: 2em; border-radius: 8px; } li.active { right-margin: 0; border-bottom-right-radius: 0; border-top-right-radius: 0; } Is there a better way to extend the <li> to the edge of the <ul>? Obviously, I'll include the webkit and mozilla border radius CSS as well. The main thing I'm unsure about is that outer corner underneath the bottom right corner of the active <li>. I have some ideas, but they seem like hacks. Any suggestions? NOTE that the <ul> is indicated in grey, but it would be white in the real design. Also, I'm planning to use Javascript to position the <div> correctly when an <li> is selected.

• Trouble accessing data in relationships in Ember

  I'm having trouble saving data in this model relationship. My models are as follows: App.Flow = DS.Model.extend({ title: DS.attr('string'), content: DS.attr('string'), isCustom: DS.attr('boolean'), params: DS.hasMany('parameter', {async: true}) }); App.Parameter = DS.Model.extend({ flow: DS.belongsTo('flow'), param: DS.attr('string'), param_tooltip: DS.attr('string'), param_value: DS.attr('string') }); As you can see, I want Flows to have multiple Parameters. I have a rudimentary setup using Flow and Parameter fixtures, which behave as expected in the templates. However, when I try to create new ones in the controller, I have trouble setting the flow and parameter values correctly. var p = this.store.createRecord('parameter', { param: "foo", param_tooltip: "world", param_value: "hello" }); var f = this.store.createRecord('flow', { title: 'job', content: title, isCustom: true, params: [p] // doesn't seem to work }); f.set('params', [p]); // doesn't seem to work p.set('flow', f); // also doesn't seem to work // Save the new model p.save(); f.save(); I've tried a lot of solutions after staring at this and StackOverflow for a while (not just the ones listed). I'm not really sure what to try next. One thing that I noticed in the Ember inspector was that the ids of these created elements were not integers (they were something like the string 'fixture_0'), but I'm not really sure why that would be, whether its related, or how to fix it. I know this is because my mask mask and topImg options have the same class - but how can I modify the plugin to allow for these items to have the same class? I know it's probably something really simple, but I'm still finding my way with jQuery and Javascript in general. Any other tips on improving my code would also be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Chris

• How to reference {{outlet}} in Ember.CollectionView's itemView

  I am new to ember and ran into a problem and could not find an answer online. I have a collectionView App.MyView = Ember.CollectionView.extend({ itemViewClass: 'App.MyViewItem', contentBinding: 'controller' }); and the itemViewClass App.MyViewItem = Ember.View.extend({ templateName: 'mytemplate' }); the template looks like that: <div {{action 'select' view.content}}>{{view.content.name}}</div> {{outlet detail}} </div> This produces the content list just fine. In the controller, I have an action: select: function(evt){ this.transitionToRoute('item', evt); } What I want to do is to transition to a nested route when selecting the item (which works fine) and also load more data of the selected item into {{outlet detail}}. While I can load the content of the "item" route into an outlet of e.g. application.hbs, I don't know how to reference the outlet of the selected collectionView item so that the detailed contents are displayed within the existing view. I tried to use: this.render('item', { outlet: 'detail', into: '????' }); within the item Route, but I don't know how to reference the collectionview item template. Maybe there's also a much easier way of loading more data from an item in the item's view (while changing the route at the same time). Any help would be appreciated.

• Extending the CI_DB_active_record class in codeigniter 2.0

  I am writing my first program with Codeigniter, and have run into a problem. I will start with a focused description of the problem and can broaden it if I need to: I need to write a multi-dimensional array to the DB and want to use the insert_batch function from the CI_DB_active_record class to do so. The problem is that I need to write empty values as NULL for some fields while other fields need to be empty strings. The current function wraps all values with single quotes, and I cannot find a way to write null values to the database for specified fields. I would also like to increase the number of records per batch. I see how to extend models, libraries, etc., but is there a way to extend the CI_DB_active_record class without modifying core classes? The minimal amount of core class modification to make this work that I have found is modifying the following lines in the DB.php file (changing the require_once file to the new file that extends the CI_DB_active_record class and changing the CI_DB_active_record class name to the new class name): require_once(BASEPATH.'database/DB_active_rec'.EXT); if ( ! class_exists('CI_DB')) { eval('class CI_DB extends CI_DB_active_record { }'); } Can I do better?

• BlackBerry Field class extension will not paint.

  Using JRE 5.0.0, simulator device is an 8520. On a screen I am using a FlowFieldManager(Manager.VERTICAL_SCROLL) and adding Fields to it to show data. When I do this.flowManager = new FlowFieldManager(Manager.VERTICAL_SCROLL); Field field = new Field() { protected void paint(Graphics graphics) { graphics.drawTest("Test", 0, 0); } protected void layout(int width, int height) { this.setExtend(300, 300); // just testing } } this.flowManager.add(field); The screen renders correctly and 'Test' appears on the screen. If, on the other hand, I try and abstract this into a class called CustomField with the same properties and add it to the flow manager the render will not happen. Debugging shows that the device enters into the Object, into the layout function, but not the paint function. I can't figure out why the paint function is not called when I extend Field. The 4.5 API says that layout and paint are the only functions that I really need to extend. (getPreferredWidth and getPreferredHeight will be used to calculate screen sizes etc.) Thanks in advance.

  I have two functions, the names are Function3, Function4, Function3 will send request to server side to get jsondata by using ajax, which, however, will take about 3 seconds to complete. Function4 is a common function which will wait for Function3's result and then action.
