  • Why doesn’t windows explorer show my removable / USB drive even though the command prompt does?

    I'm running WinXP SP2. Around 50% of the time, when I slot in my USB drive. Windows explorer refuses to show the drive. If I click on the Safely remove hardware icon on the tray, I can see a menu item for the drive - say drive G: (the light on the USB drive is also on) If I type in G: into the address bar of explorer, it says 'Cannot find...' If I type in G: into a command prompt window, it works and I can do a dir to see the list of directories on the drive. To fix this, I've to remove-reinsert the pen-drive. But doing it every day is annoying. Also this happens only on this machine.. I use this drive on my home machine and it works flawlessly each time. Can anyone suggest things that I could try ?   • XDEBUG/PHP doesn't dump profile even when set up properly?

    I installed xdebug from source, but also tried my package manager (separately) and they both are loaded correctly (verified by restarting Apache and seeing the xdebug copyright info in phpinfo()) but they do not dump profiling information. Out of the 40 different attempts of configuration it logged once or twice but I lost what I did, I tried with first only loading the module in php.ini with no settings, but it didn't log to /tmp/. I tried many different settings but my current is now: xdebug.profiler_enable = Off xdebug.profiler_enable_trigger = 1 xdebug.profiler_output_dir = "/tmp/" xdebug.profiler_output_name = "profiler.%t" Of course I call my script through 127.0.0.1/test.php?XDEBUG_PROFILE, which is for enable_trigger. Do you know why it would not dump profiler information? nobody (Arch Linux) can write to /tmp/ as it has before, so I'm sure it is not a permissions error. Apache's error_log does not tell me anything about xdebug either, as it has loaded correctly. It just does not "work"! EDIT: I made a subfolder "xdebug_profiles" in /tmp/ and chown'ed it to nobody, and now it works flawlessly. I'm not sure why it couldn't write before, I guess it's just a caveat with nobody on Arch. I answered my own question , not enough points to answer it or comment, so consider this answered.

  • Fedora 12 How to Force a Display to Load on Boot even when no Monitor is Attached

    When booting Fedora 12 with no monitor connected, if I connect a monitor later it gives a no signal error. I think it is set to auto-detect if a monitor is connected or not and load a display based of that. Since it initially detects no monitor no display is loaded. What I would like to do is have it act as if a monitor was always connected and provide the display signal always. I don't know if this is the issue or not but if you know how I might be able to fix this issue so that I can connect a monitor whenever I feel like it without having to restart that would be best.   • Scratched DVD keeps freezin when copying files, even with programs.

    Hi, I have a dvd with some family photos that is scratched, the problem is that when i try to copy stuff it reaches certain points and freezes, i'm assuming its the scratches / corrupt data. I've been trying several programs that are supposed to copy corrupt files from damaged media regardless, but they keep freezing when they reach the same points, so no different when with windows. Is there a way to fix the DVD? Or a really really good program that can do that without freezing / allowing windows to freeze? Please help, I don't have any copies of the photos and they are irreplaceable.

  • Does WebDAV even work on IIS 7? I say nay

    I've tried every configuration from the top 10 stack overflow and server fault results for WebDAV 405 on IIS (for verb PROPFIND and PUT). I'm running server 2008 SP2. Followed all the instructions here. I'm no stranger to configuring servers. This has gotten nowhere after 8 hours. Confirmed system.webserver in applicationhost.config: <add name="WebDAV" path="*" verb="PROPFIND,PROPPATCH,MKCOL,PUT,COPY,DELETE,MOVE,LOCK,UNLOCK" modules="WebDAVModule" resourceType="Unspecified" requireAccess="None" /> Port 443 with basic auth, same issue. Tried port 80 with windows auth. Broken. (405) Windows authentication. Check. Added authoring rules for default site and application. Check. Not the firewall. Check. added "Desktop Experience" role feature Tried HTTPS with Basic Authentication on port 443. Does not work. No other services are running like Sharepoint. Check. confirmed user has read/write NT level permissions for the folder/virtual dir tried net use * http://localhost /user:MYDOMAIN\me myPass get error 1920, if I don't authenticate I get error 67 confirmed I'm not applying filtering to WebDAV: <requestFiltering> <fileExtensions applyToWebDAV="false" /> <verbs applyToWebDAV="false" /> <hiddenSegments applyToWebDAV="false" /> 405 - HTTP verb used to access this page is not allowed. The page you are looking for cannot be displayed because an invalid method (HTTP verb) was used to attempt access. SHOULD I JUST GIVE UP?   • Avast Antivirus downloading data from net even when told not to update.

    Hi all, This is a strange problem that I have never seen before. I have two machines, both running Win 7 and running the latest version of Avast, both seem to be downloading large amounts of data. I noticed it when we were using more data for our monthly limit then normal, 2gb+ in a couple of days when really only browsing. I installed NetLimiter and let it run for couple of hours and this is the result for the avast! Service (c:\program files\alwil software\avast5\avastsvc.exe ). The other computer downloaded twice as much data in the same amount of time. Both installs of avast have their automatic updates (turned off at 4:00pm), for both program and definitions. Does anyone know what might be going on here.

  • Windows 2008 R2 Scheduled Task Not Running With Admin Privileges even if granted?

    I have a scheduled task that is running as USER. I have checked the box "Run with highest privileges" in the scheduled task properties. The task is a powershell script that, among other things, reboots the system. The script executes and runs normally, but as a scheduled task, it fails to reboot the system. Here is the kicker: When I manually run the script as USER using the exact same command line as what's in the scheduled task, the script still runs but this time it actually reboots the system. I have UAC disabled and USER is a member of the local Admins group. The local Admins group has the right to shut down the system. Nothing in the event logs offers any clues. Why would the same script running under the same credentials work interactively but not as a scheduled task? UPDATE: This is too weird. When the task ran on schedule, everything worked normally.

    I want to generate a robots.txt file using Varnish 2.1. That means that domain.com/robots.txt is served using Varnish and also subdomain.domain.com/robots.txt is also served using Varnish. The robots.txt must be hardcoded into default.vcl file. is that possible? I know Varnish can generate a maintenance page on error. I'm trying to make it generate a robots.txt file.   • How do I tell Thunderbird **never** to send (or even try to send) html emails?

    I hate html-based email, and always do everything possible to send my emails as plain text. My email client is Thunderbird, and it's always pestering me with questions like "This recipient cannot receive html..." or "In order to sign this email, it needs to be converted to plain text..." Is there a way I can simply say to Thunderbird "Look, old chap, it's all plain text, so don't bother me any more, ever, again"?

  • Why can't I get rid of default index.html even if I disable the default virtual host in Apache2?

    I have created a virtual host settings file and I disabled the default settings by using a2dissite default (this is a pretty standard Ubuntu 10.04 installation). But no matter what I try my Apache2 server simply keeps on displaying the default index.html page instead of the index.php page that I set up in the virtual host file. Can someone help me what I'm missing.   • How to make network drives appear even if disconnected?

    I have the same problem as many others: network and home drives set by group policy and AD are not connected on windows startup. The prime suspect is that the LAN or wireless does not connect until after user log in. I have already given up on that. Now, I just want the disconnected drives to continue to list in My Computer so that if the user goes in and double click the drive, it will connect again. However, on some machines the drive is completely missing from My Computer. If I right click My Computer Map Network Drive again, it does work. But it's very troublesome to do it all the time. And I don't want to use a script to map the drives because I don't want to appear to be using a hacky solution to the users. The drives listed as disconnected will look more like a "built-in feature", and gives users more confidence. How can I keep the disconnected drives in My Computer? I am using Windows 7 Professional and Win2k8.

  • Is it possible that solid state drives (or any faster drive) will make common applications faster even if they are cached?

    I assumed that solid state drives are insignificant after, say, Firefox is fully brought up and no important disk activity after that is going on. However, I wonder if some kind of 'cached from the disk to the CPU' activity is going on that may make solid state drives (or any faster drive) better. Then again, I suspect that may be depended only on the Bus (or some kind of cache memory drives have). Hrm..

  • Why is my Wifi connection slower than ethernet even though bandwidth should saturated?

    I'm wondering why it is that my wireless connection is slower than my wired connection for things going to the outside world (so, not files being transferred within the network), which is should be faster than the outside connection, which, I would think, would mean that downloading something like an ISO or other large file from the Internet should be the same either way since that should saturate the connection anyway. Does it have something to do with the encryption (WPA)? Could it have something to do with MTU since the MTU for ethernet can be in the range of 1500 to 9000 bytes, and 2304 bytes for 802.11? Do wireless packets have to be buffered, whereas this wouldn't be an issue with ethernet? What's the math behind the difference?

    Hi, I am using SQL server 2008 Standard edition. I am using Policy based management with policies which come with SQL server during installation. I want the policies to only look at events that happened in last 24 hours. For example for "Windows Event Log System Failure Error" policy if system restarted unexpectedly 5 days ago, i don't want to be alerted daily. Is there any way by which I can restrict a policy to look at events which happened in last 24 hours not older? Any help please? Thanks in advance.

    I'm using linux. I want a process (an irc bot) to run every time I start the computer. But I've got a problem: The network is bad and it disconnects often, so I need to manually restart the bot a few times a day. How do I automate that? Additional information: The bot creates a pid file, called bot.pid The bot reconnects itself, but only a few times. The network is too bad, so the bot kills itself sometimes because it gets no response. What I do currently (aka my approach ;) ) I have a cron job executing startbot.rb every 5 minutes.   • How does one make sure or even guarantee server time are sync correctly between dozens of servers across multiple datacenter on different location?

    Currently our web applications contain a logic to check if the data sent to the web server is expired or not by comparing the timestamp of the data with the date/time of the server. Everything goes will, until some dude from data center accidentally modify one of the web server date/time and causes some disruptions in our web services. My managers are of course not happy with this, and said we shouldn't use timestamp to check expiry in the first place...anyway.... Network Time Protocol is implemented, because of data centers are spread across different continents so we have one NTP server in each data center. The servers within the data center will have cron jobs to check against the time with their NTP server from the same data center. If time is out of sync it will auto update the server date/time. But then with our managers not happy with it, and think it could still easily causes the same problem. e.g. what if someone accidentally modify the NTP date/time? what if all the NTP servers are out of sync with each other? which NTP servers we can really trust? and blah blah.. So my questions are: What are the current practice to sync date/time between servers across multiple data centers or locations? How does one manages time stamp between web apps? e.g. Server A send data (contain timestamp of Server A) to Server B (compare timestamp between Server B and the timestamp from the data to see if it has expired or not. This is to avoid HTTP replay) Should we really not use timestamp check? Thanks & Best Regards

    I cannot open Thunderbird. The process isn't running, but when I click on the icon, I get the the following error: Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system. I've tried the following: Ending the task in Task Manager Deleting parent.lock Uninstalling Thunderbird Uninstalling Firefox Running Thunderbird in software "safe mode" and Windows safe mode What can I do to fix this problem? The problem looks more serious than expected. I do not see any Mail folder in my profile at C:\Users\your-username\AppData\Mozilla\Thunderbird. I think I lost my email.

  • Can admins monitor my activity locally even when I use a VPN?

    My school has one of those super overreacting web blockers (specifically Fortisnet) that blocks things that should be accessible by a high-school senior trying to research projects. Despite many students' complaints the administration's hands are tied due to parents' complaints. I have setup a VPN account from http://www.vpnreactor.com. With this I am able to bypass the blocker. I know this service hides my IP from websites and servers on the web. I also know that the school pays an IT guy just to monitor sites and network traffic that the students are using. Basically, will he be able to see my network traffic? More importantly, will he be able to trace it to my computer or its MAC address? I am connecting over Wi-Fi, not ethernet.

    I see this error at the top of my redis.log file: Current maximum open files is 1024. maxclients has been reduced to 4064 to compensate for low ulimit. I have followed these steps to the letter (and rebooted): Moreover, I see this when I run ulimit: ubuntu@ip-XX-XXX-XXX-XXX:~$ ulimit -n 65535 Is this error specious? If not, what other steps do I need to perform? I am running redis 2.8.13 (tip of the tree) on Ubuntu LTS 14.04.1 (again, tip of the tree).   • Everyone can access my Windows 7 Homegroup file shares - Even Windows XP computers.

    Hi, I have 3 computers in my network, two running Windows 7 and one running Windows XP. I've set up a homegroup on both Windows 7 computers. Also, all computers are in the same Workgroup. The problem is that one of the Windows 7 computers makes all shares accessible to the entire Workgroup instead of just sharing to the Homegroup as it should be. I created the file share in Windows 7 via right-click in the explorer, then click on "Share For" - "Homegroup (Read/Write)" (translated from German, so the actual wording may be different). Also, when I look at the file sharing properties of that folder, Windows Explorer informs me that Users must have a valid account and password for this Computer to access drive shares. Unfortunately this is not true. Being in the same Workgroup is enough to get access. Homegroup restrictions work as expected on my other Windows 7 computer. When trying to browse those shares from the XP computer, I get a dialog asking for a login and password. What might cause homegroup restrictions to fail and how can I fix this?

  • Is there a historical computer peripherals or accessories museum or even just a current list?

    Thinking about all the unique and different peripherals I've owned over the years, from ISA capture cards, to parallel port controlled shutter glasses for 3d games. I've seen many many accessory or computer peripherals come and go. The nostalgia of these things is a lot of fun. I tried to find some sort of historical time-line or list but what mostly turned up is computers themselves. I'm more interested in the mice, scanners, the weird adapters that shouldn't exist, short run very rare products, strange devices from computer shows in the 80's and 90's... Hardware you might find in a geeks basement that would be completely useless now, but was the coolest thing around when it was new. An example would be a drawing tablet I had for my TI-99 computer, or the audio tape player accessory for a C64 which let you save files to audio tapes, An ISA card that did the same for PC's hooked up to a VCR. Remember that IBM-PC Jr upgrade kit, that added a floppy drive, more memory and the AT switch in the back? I'd love to find either a wiki, or a list that has already been assembled which contain many of these weird (or common) accessories. I've had so many over the years I suppose I could start a wiki here if such a list doesn't already exist.

  • Windows 7 x64: 3900mb of 4gb RAM usage, even when (almost) nothing running.

    As the title suggests, I am having a problem with memory usage. I have had my computer (Vaio AW11Z/B laptop) for over a year now, and it was running perfectly until I guess a day or two ago. Now programs randomly crash, the mouse lags around the screen and the memory usage is going through the roof for no apparent reason. I am having exactly the same problem as this guy: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7performance/thread/1f716693-0a46-473e-9dc0-8c2b1a058443/. I think he explains it better. Anyone had a similar issue? What's going on? I don't think it's a virus/adware thing. Thanks very much for any help.
