• Ubuntu live CD and installing new applications onto a USB drive

  Background: I am a programmer that occasionally has access to other computers when on vacation or something. These are generally the machines of friends or family, so randomly installing Ubuntu on it wouldn't be terribly polite. I would like to completely avoid the hard drive of the target machine. Not all of these machines can boot to USB either, so that simple solution is out. What I want to be able to do is boot to an Ubuntu live CD, plug in a USB drive and then grab various updates and other applications, installing them to the USB drive. Later, on another machine, put in the live CD, after boot, put in the USB drive and then magic, I have all of the updates/applications/data/etc that I've tossed onto the drive. I suspect that it should be possible to mount /home, /var, /usr, and maybe a couple of other locations from the USB drive or something along those lines. So is this possible and what do I need to do?

• Steam freezes at login screen

  I have just installed Steam on Xubuntu, and after it finished installing it went to the login screen, but the screen is frozen, and I cannot press the buttons. • Error installing pkgconfig via macports

  I installed Macports 1.8.2 from a DMG. That seemed to install fine. I ran sudo port selfupdate to make sure my ports tree was current. I then tried to install bindfs as I want to mount some directories in my OS X file system (like you can do with mount --bind in linux). pkgconfig and macfuse are two dependencies of bindfs.   I have faced serious difficulties while installing sfJqueryTreeDoctrineManagerPlugin to Symfony 1.4 w/ Doctrine ORM. The installation directly from the server did not work out like with previous plugins that I have installed: C:\pathsymfony plugin:install sfJqueryTreeDoctrineManagerPlugin plugin installing plugin "sfJqueryTreeDoctrineManagerPlugin" No release available for plugin "sfJqueryTreeDoctrineManagerPlugin" This is why I needed to install the plugin by downloading the tgz-archive and install it manually like this: C:\pathsymfony plugin:install "C:\path\to\downloads\sfJqueryTreeDoctrineManagerPlugin-1.2.4.tgz" plugin installing plugin "C:\path\to\downloads\sfJqueryTreeDoctrineManagerPlugin-1.2.4.tgz" sfSymfonyPluginManager Installing web data for plugin I guess everything should be fine this far? I guess that Symfony doesn't look to that folder while finding helpers? I have tried to move the helper file to one of the previously mentioned folders. As expected, that changes the error. Now I get: 500 | Internal Server Error | sfConfigurationException The component does not exist: "sfJqueryTreeDoctrineManager", "manager". Unfortunately I can't figure out how should I be able to retrieve the "missing" component from the correct folder. I would be very grateful for any advice to help me forward. By the way, I am aware that there are other nested-set / tree plugins available for Symfony (like sfDoctrineTreePlugin and caPropelTreePlugin) but unluckily those are either uncompatible or too limited for my needs.

• Installing SQL Server 2008 on Windows 7 64-bit

  I'm having a shocking time trying to install SQL Server 2008 on 64-bit Windows 7. When I run setup.exe, I get the following error message: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installation has failed. SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed Things I've tried: I've checked and double checked. I do have .NET Framework 3.5 installed, with SP1 I've read about a missing Windows Installer 4.5 installation producing the same error. Win7 comes with Windows Installer 5, which hopefully satisfies this requirement, as I've tried to install 4.5 and it won't let me Burning the ISO to DVD and installing from there. Installing on an XP machine using the same ISO. This works, so the ISO must be fine. Considering SQL Server 2005, but it really needs to be 2008 for the project. Update Creating a slipstream version gives the same error Update I could install SQL Server Express, and then SP1, but couldn't upgrade to Enterprise. If you've come across this issue, or know how to fix it, I'd love to know.

  I am trying to installing a bsd distro with virt-installer. With Fedora I used this mirror: http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/mirrors/fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/16/Fedora/x86_64/os/ Are there such mirrors for freebsd or openbsd? The reason I want direct installable ftp/http mirrors is because I can access my physical server only via ssh, and it doesn't have a X server or a window manager to give me a VNC GUI. When I tried installing centos 6 with an online mirror I was able to finish the installation via serial console, but after I rebooted it, the serial console never worked for me. I tried everything possible---editing menu.lst, inttab and securtty files. Fedora 16 booted fine from serial console, but got stuck when it loaded anaconda installer. I tried editing freebsd iso installation media by adding serial console option to boot option. And installation was successful. But couldn't boot into it becuase it wasn't giving console acess. I couldn't edit any files as ufs partition cannot be loaded with write access on my Ubuntu server 10.04. Only debian squeeze worked well, it worked for me even without editing a single configuration file. I want to have CLI versions of fedora/centos and freebsd/openbsd. But, looks like there isn't any hope for me to have them, as I have to depend on a serial console to do everything.

• Installing xampp on system that already have mysql

  I'm rather new to PHP and xampp. I have a computer that has installed MySQL server and MySQL workbench as I was working with Java and NetBeans. Now I want to use my computer for developing PHP and other web stuff too. I installed xampp successfully. But when I'm trying to access phpMyAdmin, it gives me an error saying mysql server rejected its connection Actually I tried stopping my current MySQL service and installing it again. However xampp have a its own mysql server in its installation path too. I tried configuring config.inc.php to use my existing installation of MySQL which is on a separate path. But I failed. Can anyone please instruct me how to configure this xampp to use my existing MySQL server to do everything and ignore the installed one with itself? I don't want two MySQL services to run on my system and clash in future. I'll be glad if anyone can explain to me what is best to use when you're developing Java, PHP, C and all the stuff on the same machine. P.S.: I have been given a password for my existing MySQL sever (user = root) as we do it usually when installing MySQL alone.

  I posted this question originally on StackOverflow, but a user suggested I moved it here so here I go! I have an account in a remote computer without root permissions and I needed to install a local version of Python (the remote computer has a version of Python that is incompatible with some codes I have), Numpy and Scipy there. I've been trying to install numpy locally since yesterday, with no success. I successfully installed a local version of Python (2.7.3) in /home/myusername/.local/, so I access to this version of Python by doing /home/myusername/.local/bin/python. I tried two ways of installing Numpy: I downloaded the lastest stable version of Numpy from the official webpage, unpacked it, got into the unpacked folder and did: /home/myusername/.local/bin/python setup.py install --prefix=/home/myusername/.local. However, I get the following error, which is followed by a series of other errors (deriving from this one): gcc -pthread -shared build/temp.linux-x86_64-2.7/numpy/core/blasdot/_dotblas.o -L/usr/local/lib -Lbuild/temp.linux-x86_64-2.7 -lptf77blas -lptcblas -latlas -o build/lib.linux-x86_64-2.7/numpy/core/_dotblas.so /usr/bin/ld: /usr/local/lib/libptcblas.a(cblas_dptgemm.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against `a local symbol' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC Not really knowing what this meant (except that the error apparently has to do with the LAPACK library), I just did the same command as above, but now putting LDFLAGS='-fPIC', as suggested by the error i.e., I did LDFLAGS="-fPIC" /home/myusername/.local/bin/python setup.py install --prefix=/home/myusername/.local. However, I got the same error (except that the prefix -fPIC was addeded after the gcc command above). I tried installing it using pip, i.e., doing /home/myusername/.local/bin/pip install numpy /after successfully instaling pip in my local path). However, I get the exact same error. I searched on the web, but none of the errors seemed to be similar to mine. My first guess is that this has to do with some piece of code that needs root permissions to be executed, or maybe with some problem with the version of the LAPACK libraries or with gcc (gcc version 4.1.2 is installed on the remote computer). Help, anyone?

• Installing Windows 7 over PXE, preferably with domain autojoin

  At an educational non-profit, I've inherited a previously set-up Windows domain that, after the first reinstall of the machines, we ended up not using by simply not joining machines back into the domain. Over last summer, before the annual reinstall for shipping machines to the summer school, I toyed with the idea of installing Windows 7 over network, instead of just imaging the machines. It took a bit longer than I expected to figure out the basics; honestly, I expected that Windows would be more friendly for PXE installation out of the box. What I'm interested in is best practices for installing Windows 7 over PXE with domain autojoin. I'd love it if the whole setup could optionally be hosted on a UNIX based system as well. I've had some success by preparing an ISO using Windows Deployment Kit, and loading the ISO into memory. This was needed since I wanted a menu, and I think I couldn't get PXELINUX to chainload into Windows' bootloader. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out much about customization of the Windows setup in that timeframe nor could I get Samba to work properly; studying the stuff ended up being too lengthy, especially the portion where I edited a disk image on Windows and copied it outside. WDK didn't make things easier by mounting the disk image into RAM, and writing it in its entirety when done with it, making me a very sad boy. I've recently found a different approach, too, that appears to be closer to Microsoft's original idea for netboot deployment and does not involve ISOs. So my question boils down to the following. What exact approach do you use for netbooting Windows 7 setup? How can Windows 7 setup be best customized to be completely unattended, including installation on specific system partition and not destroying the data partition, creation of passworded admin and default user, choice of MAC-address-based hostname, and joining a domain? As much details as possible for everyone's future reference would be appreciated. WDS isn't a bad choice, but if a Linux-based install can be used, that'd be better.

• Can not copy files after installing windows

  I am experiencing a weird problem. I was running Xubuntu on my laptop until yesterday that I had to delete Xubuntu and install Windows. I had a NTFS partition on my Xubuntu that I kept some files on it. Today after installing windows I wanted to move all the files from that partition to an external HDD. I selected all files and folders and clicked on Copy, then I went to the HDD and clicked on paste but nothing happened. I can not do that. I do not know why. I copy the files, and wherever I click paste, nothing happens. If I try to copy the files and folders one by one, I can copy some of them, but some of them do not move. The other problem I have is that I can not open some files, in particular pdf files. When I click on pdf files I get this error: There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found. Also, I cannot play some mp4 files. I can not open some jpg and txt files. I get this error The directory name is invalid. So in summary, after removing Xubuntu and installing windows 7 I have the following problems with one of the NTFS partitions on my internal drive: Can not copy or cut all folders and files from that partition to any other partition - I also do not get any errors. Can copy some folders and files Can not access some pdf, jpeg, txt and mp4 files and get the above errors. I should also mention I did not change anything for this partition during the installation or formatting the other partitions.

Well, you people are better at this than I am! O=) On with the show! I'm in the process of installing Oracle Database 11g R2 Standard Edition onto Ubuntu Server 11.10. I found a guide on the Oracle Support Forums that walks you through the process fairly easily. Unfortunately, I'm running into issues installing one particular dependency: slapd. • Installing Visual Studio 2003 on Windows 7 64-bit

  My team is currently supporting a 1.1 app and we are installing VS.NET 2003 on Windows 7. We haven't had any issues on the 32-bit machines, but FrontPage Server Extensions are failing to install on my 64-bit machine. Others on the Interwebs say that they have done this successfully, so I wanted to know if anyone here has and if they know of a solution. The specific issue is that FPSE (to clarify, I'm installing "FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions for IIS 7.0") fails to install correctly. In EventViewer I get the error: Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions: Error #3004f Message: Unable to read configuration information for Microsoft Internet Information Server: ImpersonateLoggedOnUser Error. I've looded for errors with ImpersonateLoggedOnUser on 64-bit and did find a case where it fails on 64-bit when UAC is turned off (which I did have it off). I turned UAC back on, ran command prompt as administrator, and ran msiexec on the FPSE package. Still no dice. When I run [ ldapsearch -x -b '' -s base '(objectclass=*)' namingContexts ] I get this error [ ldap_sasl_bind(SIMPLE): Can't contact LDAP server (-1) ] I can't figure it out what is the problem.
