  • SSIS Denali as part of “Enterprise Information Management”

    - by jorg
When watching the SQL PASS session “What’s Coming Next in SSIS?” of Steve Swartz, the Group Program Manager for the SSIS team, an interesting question came up: Why is SSIS thought of to be BI, when we use it so frequently for other sorts of data problems? The answer of Steve was that he breaks the world of data work into three parts: Process of inputs BI   Enterprise Information Management All the work you have to do when you have a lot of data to make it useful and clean and get it to the right place. This covers master data management, data quality work, data integration and lineage analysis to keep track of where the data came from. All of these are part of Enterprise Information Management. Next, Steve told Microsoft is developing SSIS as part of a large push in all of these areas in the next release of SQL. So SSIS will be, next to a BI tool, part of Enterprise Information Management in the next release of SQL Server. I'm interested in the different ways people use SSIS, I've basically used it for ETL, data migrations and processing inputs. In which ways did you use SSIS?

  • Mobile App Notifications in the Enterprise Space: UX Considerations

    - by ultan o'broin
Here is a really super website of UX patterns for Android: Android Patterns. I was particularly interested in the event-driven notification patterns (aka status bar notifications to developers). Android - unlike iOS (i.e., the iPhone) - offers a superior centralized notifications system for users.   (Figure copyright Android Patterns)   Research in the enterprise applications space shows how users on-the-go, prefer this approach, as: Users can manage their notification alerts centrally, across all media, apps and for device activity, and decide the order in which to deal with them, and when. Notifications, unlike messages in a dialog or information message in the UI, do not block a task flow (and we need to keep task completion to under three minutes). See the Anti-Patterns slideshare presentation on this blocking point too. These notifications must never interrupt a task flow by launching an activity from the background. Instead, the user can launch an activity from the notification. What users do need is the ability to filter this centralized approach, and to personalize the experience of which notifications are added, what the reminder is, ability to turn off, and so on. A related point concerning notifications is when used to provide users with a record of actions then you can lighten up on lengthy confirmation messages that pop up (toasts in the Android world) used when transactions or actions are sent for processing or into a workflow. Pretty much all the confirmation needs to say is the action is successful along with key data such as dollar amount, customer name, or whatever. I am a user of Android (Nexus S), BlackBerry (Curve), and iOS devices (iPhone 3GS and 4). In my opinion, the best notifications user experience for the enterprise user is offered by Android. Blackberry is good, but not as polished and way clunkier than Android’s. What you get on the iPhone, out of the box, is useless in the enterprise. • Nexus One & Windows XP USB Driver

    - by Stefan
I've been unable to get my Nexus One working as a development phone on Windows XP. I've got the driver (revision 3 for N1 support), I've got it installed according to the official installation guide, and the phone appears in the Device Manager just as the guide says it should. However, adb still can't find the phone. 'adb devices', for example, returns no active devices. Am I forgetting some basic step? One thing I've noticed is that the driver is labeled in Windows as version 2 released November, 2009 (I need version 3 from January 2010 for N1 support). However, I've never had version 2 installed. I've used the SDK to download version 3 several times - even deleted it and redownloaded it. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the version 3 driver multiple times. It still says version 2. Is this the problem, or this something completely unrelated? Note: The phone is working as a dev phone on Ubuntu, so I know the phone/cable/etc. are good. It's either my fault or the driver's.

  • Cannot connect Nexus One Phone to Android adb

    - by appbee
I am running Android SDK 2.2 and am trying to get the adb to connect to the Google Nexus One phone. Its a new phone, shipped straight from Google - haven't installed any apps on it yet. (I have Windows XP) Here is what I have done so far: Followed the instructions on setting up the device for development as given on the Android Developer's site: http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html added android:debuggable="true" to my application manifest USB debuggable is checked on the phone downloaded the Device Drivers For Windows Revision 3 (this supports Nexus One phones) Went through the Hardware Installation wizard to install the device - the device shows up as "Android Composite ADB Interface". When I run adb devices on the shell, the device appears for a moment, then disappears. On the Eclipse console, I get the following message: [2010-11-13 11:54:42 - DeviceMonitor]Failed to start monitoring I have rebooted the pc several times, uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers several times, but I get the same error each time. As I was researching this problem, someone had recommended rebooting the phone. I am a bit confused by that - is that a soft or hard reboot? Do I just power the phone off/on and is there something more complex involved? Do I have to hard reboot it to reset to factory version - even though its brand new? Has anyone run into a similar problem? Any help on this would be great. I can't test my application on the device if the adb cannot view the device. Thanks so much in advance.

  • Hibernate mapping one-to-many problem

    - by Xorty
    Hello, I am not very experienced with Hibernate and I am trying to create one-to-many mapping. Here are relevant tables: And here are my mapping files: <hibernate-mapping package="com.xorty.mailclient.server.domain"> <class name="Attachment" table="Attachment"> <id name="id"> <column name="idAttachment"></column> </id> <property name="filename"> <column name="name"></column> </property> <property name="blob"> <column name="file"></column> <type name="blob"></type> </property> <property name="mailId"> <column name="mail_idmail"></column> </property> </class> </hibernate-mapping> <hibernate-mapping> <class name="com.xorty.mailclient.server.domain.Mail" table="mail"> <id name="id" type="integer" column="idmail"></id> <property name="content"> <column name="body"></column> </property> <property name="ownerAddress"> <column name="account_address"></column> </property> <property name="title"> <column name="head"></column> </property> <set name="receivers" table="mail_has_contact" cascade="all"> <key column="mail_idmail"></key> <many-to-many column="contact_address" class="com.xorty.mailclient.client.domain.Contact"></many-to-many> </set> <list name="attachments" cascade="save-update, delete" inverse="true"> <key column="mail_idmail" not-null="true"/> <index column="fk_Attachment_mail1"></index> <one-to-many class="com.xorty.mailclient.server.domain.Attachment"/> </list> </class> </hibernate-mapping> In plain english, one mail has more attachments. When I try to do CRUD on mail without attachments, everyting works just fine. When I add some attachment to mail, I cannot perform any CRUD operation. • Sparxsystems Enterprise Architect and issuses/tasks tracking system?

    - by peperg
We (developement team 4 upto 7 people) use Sparxsystems EA for requirement analysis, modeling etc. Do you know any well-working methods to use EA and some task/issue tracking system like Redmine/Mantis/Trac ? The problem is not to duplicate functionality (there are issues/tasks/changes in Redmine and EA) but to have some user friendly interface (preffered web) to manage tasks and issues. By user-friendly I mean "my tasks" page add effort / time tracking easy "add issue" by everyone (simple bug tracking system) mail notifications

  • Hibernate annotated many-to-one not adding child to parent Collection

    - by Rob Hruska
I have the following annotated Hibernate entity classes: @Entity public class Cat { @Column(name = "ID") @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO) @Id private Long id; @OneToMany(mappedBy = "cat", cascade = CascadeType.ALL, fetch = FetchType.EAGER) private Set<Kitten> kittens = new HashSet<Kitten>(); public void setId(Long id) { this.id = id; } public Long getId() { return id; } public void setKittens(Set<Kitten> kittens) { this.kittens = kittens; } public Set<Kitten> getKittens() { return kittens; } } @Entity public class Kitten { @Column(name = "ID") @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO) @Id private Long id; @ManyToOne(cascade = CascadeType.ALL, fetch = FetchType.EAGER) private Cat cat; public void setId(Long id) { this.id = id; } public Long getId() { return id; } public void setCat(Cat cat) { this.cat = cat; } public Cat getCat() { return cat; } } My intention here is a bidirectional one-to-many/many-to-one relationship between Cat and Kitten, with Kitten being the "owning side". What I want to happen is when I create a new Cat, followed by a new Kitten referencing the Cat, the Set of kittens on my Cat should contain the new Kitten. However, this does not happen in the following test: @Test public void testAssociations() { Session session = HibernateUtil.getSessionFactory().getCurrentSession(); Transaction tx = session.beginTransaction(); Cat cat = new Cat(); session.save(cat); Kitten kitten = new Kitten(); kitten.setCat(cat); session.save(kitten); tx.commit(); assertNotNull(kitten.getCat()); assertEquals(cat.getId(), kitten.getCat().getId()); assertTrue(cat.getKittens().size() == 1); // <-- ASSERTION FAILS assertEquals(kitten, new ArrayList<Kitten>(cat.getKittens()).get(0)); } Even after re-querying the Cat, the Set is still empty: // added before tx.commit() and assertions cat = (Cat)session.get(Cat.class, cat.getId()); Am I expecting too much from Hibernate here? Or is the burden on me to manage the Collection myself? The (Annotations) documentation doesn't make any indication that I need to create convenience addTo*/removeFrom* methods on my parent object. Can someone please enlighten me on what my expectations should be from Hibernate with this relationship? Or if nothing else, point me to the correct Hibernate documentation that tells me what I should be expecting to happen here. What do I need to do to make the parent Collection automatically contain the child Entity?

  • Dynamic DateTimeRangeValidator using Enterprise Library 4.1?

    - by Toran Billups
I'm trying to add a range of - 365 days and + 365 days but it appears that using this attribute in EL 4.1 only accepts a special ISO formatted string ... thus I can't simply add a normal string to this validation routine. <DateTimeRangeValidator(DateTime.Now.AddDays(2), DateTime.Now.AddDays(4))> _ I wanted to do something similar to the above - fyi Does anyone know how you can force this attribute to accept this ISO formatted string w/out hand coding this value?

  • Multiple Configuration Sources for Enterprise Library 4.1?

    - by Martijn B
Hi All, We use the caching and logging application blocks from entlib 4.1. We want to keep the configuration of those two in seperate files. How can we achieve this? It looks like entlib is always using the selectedSource as it configuration. I tried the following: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <configSections> <section name="enterpriseLibrary.ConfigurationSource" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common.Configuration.ConfigurationSourceSection, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=9057346a2b2dcfc8" /> </configSections> <enterpriseLibrary.ConfigurationSource selectedSource="messagesCache"> <sources> <add name="messagesCache" filePath="Configuration\\messagesCache.config" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common.Configuration.FileConfigurationSource, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=9057346a2b2dcfc8" /> <add name="logging" filePath="Configuration\\logging.config" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common.Configuration.FileConfigurationSource, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=9057346a2b2dcfc8" /> </sources> </enterpriseLibrary.ConfigurationSource> </configuration> But this doesn't work because the application blocks always use the selectedSource attribute value. Any suggestions woulde be welcome! Gr Martijn

  • Log to rolling CSV file with Enterprise Library

    - by Tinminator
Need logging to: Rolling file, to avoid 1 big log file. CSV format for easier look up. I can see EntLib (5.0) have Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.TraceListeners.RollingFlatFileTraceListener to log to rolling log file. To make the log entries look like a CSV row, I can change the Logging.Formatters.TextFormatter.Template to put double quote around the values. Also change the Listener's Footer and Header to nothing, so they won't be output. Under normal circumstance, this would give me a well formed CSV file. However if a token value in the Template contain double quote, this would not be escaped, hence the log file become an invalid CSV file. Is there any way to resolve this? Is there any alternative solutions to this problem?

Each restaurant has restaurant branches, each branch must determine which days of the week it opens, each of those days must determine (several) open_hour and close_hour thru that day. I created one to many relationship using these tables: rest_names --- rest_branches --- open_days --- open_hours Am I going right this way? or there is another way to do this, maybe less complicated? And how the query will be like to get the hours of a restaurant on a specific day, say sunday?

  • Adventures on Enterprise Library 5.0: Who moved my cheese (namespace)

    - by Junior Mayhé
Jesus, Krishna, Budda! I've migrated to EntLib 5.0, but classes like ISymmetricCryptoProvider are not recognized anymore. Funny to say that Data, Logging and other blocks are working compiling fine. Here's the problematic class: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common.Configuration;//-->it's not working anymore using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Security.Cryptography;//-->it's not working anymore namespace MyClassLibrary.Security.EnterpriseLibrary { public sealed class Crypto { public static ISymmetricCryptoProvider MyProvider { get { //IConfigurationSource is not recognized either, neither SystemConfigurationSource IConfigurationSource cs = new SystemConfigurationSource(); SymmetricCryptoProviderFactory scpf = new SymmetricCryptoProviderFactory(cs); ISymmetricCryptoProvider p = scpf.CreateDefault(); return p; } } The references are fine on project too. I really don't know why this particular project it's causing too many trouble on VS2010! Older references were deleted, project was cleaned, rebuilt, but can't make it compile :-( The references are: Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.Database Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Security Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Security.Cryptography Why some namespaces can be found while others can't?
