• Live Debugging

  Based on my classification of diagnostics, you should know what live debugging is NOT about - at least according to me :-) and in this post I'll share how I think of live debugging. These are the (outer) steps to live debugging Get the debugger in the picture. Control program execution. Inspect state. Iterate between 2 and 3 as necessary. Stop debugging (and potentially start new iteration going back to step 1). Step 1 has two options: start with the debugger attached, or execute your binary separately and attach the debugger later. You might say there is a 3rd option, where the app notifies you that there is an issue, referred to as JIT debugging. However, that is just a variation of the attach because that is when you start the debugging session: when you attach. I'll be covering in future posts how this step works in Visual Studio. Step 2 is about pausing (or breaking) your app so that it makes no progress and remains "frozen". A sub-variation is to pause only parts of its execution, or in other words to freeze individual threads. I'll be covering in future posts the various ways you can perform this step in Visual Studio. Step 3, is about seeing what the state of your program is when you have paused it. Typically it involves comparing the state you are finding, with a mental picture of what you thought the state would be. Or simply checking invariants about the intended state of the app, with the actual state of the app. I'll be covering in future posts the various ways you can perform this step in Visual Studio. Step 4 is necessary if you need to inspect more state - rinse and repeat. Self-explanatory, and will be covered as part of steps 2 & 3. Step 5 is the most straightforward, with 3 options: Detach the debugger; terminate your binary though the normal way that it terminates (e.g. close the main window); and, terminate the debugging session through your debugger with a result that it terminates the execution of your program too. In a future post I'll cover the ways you can detach or terminate the debugger in Visual Studio. I found an old picture I used to use to map the steps above on Visual Studio 2010. It is basically the Debug menu with colored rectangles around each menu mapping the menu to one of the first 3 steps (step 5 was merged with step 1 for that slide).   Abstract: I'm using VB to recreate a query each time a user selects one of 3 options from a drop down menu, which appends the WHERE clause If they've selected anything from the combo boxes. I then am attempting to get the information displayed on the form to refresh thereby filtering what is displayed in the table based on user input. 1) Dynamically created query using VB. • Combo-box values automatically update

  Hi all, hopefully somebody can help The table structure is as follows: tblCompany: compID compName tblOffice: offID, compID, add1, add2, add3 etc... tblEmployee: empID Name, telNo, etc... offID I have a form that contains contact details for employees, all works ok using after update. A cascading combo box, cmbComp, allows me to select a company, and inturn select the appropriate office, cboOff, and updates the corresponding tblEmployee.offID field correctly. Fields are automatically updated for the address also cmbComp: RowSource SELECT DISTINCT tblOffice.compID, tblCompany.compID FROM tblCompany INNER JOIN AdjusterCompanyOffice ON tblCompany.compID=tblOffice.compID ORDER BY tblCompany.compName; cboOff: RowSource SELECT tblCompany.offID, tblCompany.Address1, tblCompany.Address2, tblCompany.Address3, tblCompany.Address4, tblCompany.Address5 FROM tblCompany ORDER BY tblCompany.Address1; The problem I am having is that when i load a new record how to retrieve the data and automatically load the cmbComp and text fields. The cboOff combo box loads correctly as the control source for this is the offID I imagine there must be a way of setting the value on opening the record? Not sure how though. I dont think I can set the controlsource cmbComp or text fields, or can I? Any help/point in the right direction appreciated, have been searching for a way to do this but cant get anywhere!

• MessageBox if Recordset Update is Successful

  In Access 2007, I have a form to add a new contact to a table: RecSet.AddNew RecSet![Code_Personal] = Me.txtCodePersonal.Value RecSet![FName] = Me.TxtFName.Value RecSet![LName] = Me.txtLName.Value RecSet![Tel Natel] = Me.txtNatTel.Value RecSet![Tel Home] = Me.txtHomeTel.Value RecSet![Email] = Me.txtEmail.Value RecSet.Update This has worked so far, and the contact has successfully been aded. But I'm having two problems: I want to display a messagebox to tell the user the contact was successfully added If the contact was not successfully added because A contact with this name already exists A different issue Then display a message box "Contact already exists" or "error occured" respectively. My idea of doing this is: If recSet.Update = true Then MsgBox "Paolo Bernasconi was successfully added" Else if RecSet![FName] & RecSet![LName] 'already exist in table MsgBox "Contact already exists" Else MsgBox "An unknown error occured" I know this code is wrong, and obviously doesn't work, but it's just to give you an idea of what I'm trying to achieve.   Hi, How would i set the itemdata from getting just the ID/key of a row, if i didnt know what order it is in on the list For example I have a combo box showing the following: cmbPeople: ID Name 2 Rod 4 Jane 6 Freddy eg. I know I want Jane to be the focus of the combo box, and i have the ID but i dont know that its the second item in the list ( Me.cmbPeople.ItemData(1) ) How would I go about doing this?? • Access 2007 VBA : Building a listbox with selection choices from another list box

  So there are 8 categories that may be associated to each order, but not necessarily all of them. So i was going to build a list box that allowed the user to double click each of the category they wish to associate when they have an "Order Detail" form opened up (unbound form that has hidden text boxes with all needed ID numbers). I want to have another empty text box right beside it that will allow me to append the selections (up to 8) so the user can see that they have been added. So one list box with the default choices, and when a choice is double clicked, it adds that choice to the second list box to see the tally so to speak. What is the VB for getting something like this done? Thanks Justin

• Access 2007 & 2003 : Creating an mde for 2003 users with a 2007 dev copy issues

  So i have an image on my computer that has office 2007, and I have the development copy of this database file where I corrected some code, added some fields, etc... I then converted the Access file (.mdb dev file) to Access 2002-2003 format to create an mde. So I then created the new mde, but when users try to open, it gives them the message that it is not the correct format and that they should upgrade to a newer version of access. So will i be able to get this done with having office 2007, and these other end users not having their new image pushed yet (so they still have office 2003)? I thought that if I converted the file to 2002-2003 then this should not be a problem Thanks Justin

• Re-naming chart legend in Access 2007

  In an auto-generated chart based on a query (I dragged the chart object onto a blank form to start it), the chart itself is displaying and updating properly, datawise, but I want to change the Legend from reading "SumOfAvgOfield1" and "SumOfAvgOfield2" to regular words suitable for final presentations.   Hello, I have a Paradox 5.0 database and want to migrate it to Access 2007. But if I try to import a Paradox table, Access gives an error message: "Incorrect collating sequence". The Help says: "You tried to link a Paradox table that was created with an international sort order that is not the same as the one you are using". What am I doing wrong? How can a change that sort order? Anybody? Thanks in advance.

• Cannot log in to the desktop on ubuntu 11.10?

  The problem is, I could log in under the terminal, i could ifup eth0, i could do anything I want in the terminal, but if I use ctrl+alt+f7 goto the gnome login screen, after I input the correct password, the system just send me back to same login screen again. I have created a new user, but it didn't work. I have change all the files under ~/ to jichao:jichao(which is my username) with chown -hR jichao:jichao /home/jichao, but it didn't work too. I searched the internet, somebody said I should see the logs under /var/log/gdm, but there is not a /var/log/gdm directory in my box.   I want to log web site visits' IP, datetime, client and refferer data to access database but I'm planning to log every days log data in separate tables in example logs for 06.06.2010 will be logged in 2010_06_06 named table. When date is changed I'll create a table named 2010_06_07. But the problem is if this table is already created. Any suggestions how to check if table exists in Access?

• Access: Data Type Mismatch using boolean function in query criteria

  I have a VBA function IsValidEmail() that returns a boolean. I have a query that calls this function: Expr1: IsValidEmail([E-Mail]). When I run the query, it shows -1 for True and 0 for False. So far so good. Now I want to filter the query to only show invalid emails. I'm using the Query Designer, so I just add a value of 0 to the Criteria field. This gives me a "Data Type Mismatch" error. So does "0" (with quotes) and False. How am I supposed to specify criteria for a boolean function?

  I created an ASPX page with search controls to the left bound as controls for an AccessDataSource. I want the data grid to be blank on the first calling of the page, but show the results for subsequent page loads. I plan to achieve this by putting [pFirstRun] = False as my first WHERE condition with the parameter pFirstRun tied to the value isPostBack. How do I achieve this? Alternatively, is there a better way to achieve this goal?

  Hi there, Is it possible to have multiple currency denominations in a field? I have a field that will have a currency value that will be either euro's or sterling dependent on whether or not the applicable record is in the currency zone.
