• Grandma's Computer - Can a user that belongs only to the "Users" group in Windows XP install malware, virus or IE addons?

  I am trying to figure out if having a user in the "Users" group will be enough to prevent her from install unwanted software. The things that I don't want the user to be able to install are: virus malware bandoo stuff Internet Explorer Addons To put you in context, I am thinking of my grandma's computer, I want her to be able to read all her email stuff and attachments, but without the hassle of needing to reinstall the whole computer every few months. The computer will run Windows XP, with some free antivirus. It will not be part of any domain. It is just a home computer. Linux, I have tried making her use it, but she was already accustomed to Windows and was not really an option to have her re-learn where was the shutdown button. So, are these considerations enough to prevent her installing unwanted software? What other options come to you mind? Thanks

• My laptop can connect to every wireless network except fios

  I have always been able to connect to every wireless router secured or unsecured wep or wpa. I had Fios installed and could not connect. Verizon suggested it was my computer and gave me an outside wirless drive to use, it worked. I got rid of fios and went back to comcast and threw out the drive, but now 2 years later, I am sitting at my friends house haveing the same problem. My tech savy friend told me it is a firewall setting or something in my antivirus software, but I disabled them both and still nothing works........Funny it is only FIOS

• Mouse(s) double clicks instead of single click (its not the mouse)

  I am aware of this very similar question: But I have tried with 3 different mouses and everyone of them exibit the same behavior. Simple enough, 1 out of 3 times I get a double click when single clicking). I searched the net a lot about this problem and have yet to find a solution. I have tried: 1- switch to another mouse 2- uninstall the mouse drivers + reboot 3- I do not have any special mouse drivers/software like intellisense and logitecs to uninstall. 4- verified that I was not in fact on some setting that says open files with single click. 5- everything is up to date including a antivirus 6- Installed fresh drivers from dell's website It is a dell vostro 260 computer running windows 7 pro 64. edit: added a 6th thing I tried. edit2: tried reinstalling every windows update I could find nothing Boss just said he'd buy me a logitech mouse hoping the drivers will fix my problems. • vmware workstation - virtual network adapters missing from ipconfig, still show in networking (XP host)

  Hi Folks - here's a new one for me, and my first time posting here: I installed VMWare workstation 7.1 on a new PC. VMWare properly installs the virtual network adapters under the Network Connections control panel, however for some reason they do not show up under ipconfig, which is very weird. They also don't appear anywhere in "route print". I don't have network connectivity to the VM. My guesses are perhaps some conflict with Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Client Firewall. Tried the following things: enabling TCP/IP in the virtual network adapters (they often get installed with it disabled for some reason) Restoring defualts in the VMnetcfg gui tool (this causes an uninstall and reinstall of the virtual network adapters on the host) Re-installing vmware workstation Uninstalling checkpoint secureremote and then reinstalling vmware Just to be clear, this problem is totally on the host. In my searching for stuff about (non-vmware) adapters missing from ipconfig, I see some posts about resetting the TCP/IP stack using netsh. Looking into that next... Thanks!

• How can I make my Virtualbox Vista see my USB device (iPad)?

  I have the latest VirtualBox. I have filters for the iPad. But it does not show up in my virtual Windows vista My Computer screen or virtual iTunes. • Not enough storage is available to process this command

  I am getting this error on almost all of the operations on a Windows 7 pro 32 bit machine. By operations I mean anything I do. Update a repo from subversion. Access a local IIS Site. Copy a big folder. Run an installer.and sometime if I try again. It get solved. I think there is something wrong wit windows7 . I searched around and found posts suggesting to increase IRPStackSize value in registry I did that no Luck. I am using Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.1961.0 as my antivirus package Once this errors starts popping up. I have to restart and then in after some random time. It starts showing up again. Any help is appreciated. I am losing lot of my time in restarting my system or retrying again and again.

• Firefox cannot recognize certificates for well knows sites

  When trying to connect to well known sites, for instance hotmail.com Firefox shows that This Connection in Untrusted. In the OptionsAdvancedCertificates it's configured to select one matching certificate automatically. Why Firefox does not trust current connection? Can it be Man-in-the-middle attack or it's something like broken certificate storage on my computer? UPDATE UPDATE2 Solved: the problem is Antivirus Web Access protection. It interferes with HTTPS connection. Similar to Man-in-the-middle? Why ESET cannot do it correctly?

• Delete temporary files from batch script in xp

  I'm looking for a good batch script that would quickly find & clean all the known safe temporary folders/files from Windows (as many variants as possible) machines (e.g. the windows temp folder, all users IE temp folders, etc.). I'm fond of UI tools like CCleaner (over Cleanmgr.exe), but when I'm trying to clean several computers quickly and/or with minimal involvement, it would be nice to have a script. Plus with a script, I could chain several scripts together. Maybe one to then fire up various antivirus and/or malware detectors. Anyone have a good one or can point to a good resource?

  I am an advanced user, using Windows 7 with Avast! antivirus running. Today I started browsing and faced some weird popup. Upon investigation I found that "Relevant Knowledge" was running in my system. I was able to uninstall it using the Programs Manager and deleted the file's entries in the registry, but I am a little troubled due to the fact that Avast! was not able to detect it; and secondly, how it came into my system. Also, what further prevention measures should I take?

• Blocked port 25 on Windows 7 64 bit

  Strange problem. I have 2 computers connected to Wifi router. One with Windows Vista & second with 2 operating systems: SUSe Linux and Windows 7 64bit on it. Computer with Vista can connect to SMTP server of my email provider (and any other) using port 25, and can connect to a mail server using telnet mail.server.com 25 if this port is open. Computer with dual operating system can (using Linux) do the same. The same computer, with the same hardware (Wifi card etc.), and using the same WiFi router, cannot however use Port 25 and cannot Telnet into any smtp server. So the problem is in Windows 7. I did uninstall all antivirus software and disabled the firewall. The problem is still here. Is there way how find out which software is blocking this port?

• Problem connecting to MySQL with zend

  I've set up a virtual host on my local machine (windows xp with xampp installed), have installed zend there and am now trying to connect to the MySQLdatabase. I get the following error message: Message: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2003] Can't connect to MySQL server on ''myhost.com'' (10060) All the tips I've found via google haven't helped. I use kaspersky antivirus and have added port 3306 to the allowed list for MySQL and Apache. I've also pinged myhost.com:3306 and get a response (with ip address 67.63.50.51), though localhost:3306 and 127.0.0.1:3306 aren't found. I've checked that other apps can still access MySQL if the virtual host is pointed at them instead and my non zend apps do work. I guess I have to do something further to the port, or maybe force the app to use a different port, but am not sure how to do either. Any help appreciated.

• Updating windows xp hard drive controller from ubuntu live disk

  The problem: When booting, I get a blue screen shortly after the Windows XP logo splash screen. The error code is 7b, and the second hex number is 0xC0000034. Based on this link (item 7) it appears the driver should be updated. Oddly, I made no changes to the drivers recently. I suspect it was something in a windows update or the newest upgrade of my antivirus (eset). But I digress. The BSOD makes me unable to boot into Windows at all, so I can't update the driver from there. I've run various bios-level diagnostics (including full surface scan) and the hd looks good. I'm also able to boot to an old ubuntu disk and read files from the hd. The question: Based on the above, it appears that I need to update the Windows hard drive controller from the ubuntu live disk. How do I do that?

• Filemaker Server Not Installing and Windows Problems

  When I tried installing Filemaker Server 8.0 on Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition R2, an error message pop up that states: MMC has detected an error in a snap-in. It is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC. After this message pops up, Filemaker Server freezes. I'm also having problems with openssl and running executable files, but am not sure if the 2 are related. Error message for openssl states: Openssl.exe encountered a problem and needed to close. In one of the computers connected to the network running this same Server 2003 R2, when I tried double-clicking on Dr. Web antivirus to do a scan, nothing happens. I have done this many times before reinstalling the server, and it never gave trouble before this. Any help given is appreciated.

• Computer freeze at night

  Every night except one this week my laptop froze over night. I tried to check the event viewer, but there's no real help there. Tonight I'll do a memtest to check the RAM. And this shouldn't be a temperature issue since I can play game without any problem (Diablo 3, League of legend) Is there any diagnosys tool I could use. Maybe something that would write time down every minute so I know the precise time when it freeze? While i try to test there was an index.html with a malicious script which had an iframe to this site's jar file. and kaspersky anti virus blocked it. So i browsed the ftp to find the file and i deleted it. and also disabled directory listing. May be the ftp details of the site owner would have been hacked. I want to report this site to google, msn and mozilla and other antivirus programs. How to do that. any idea? I hope kaspersky would have updated it in their database but still i want to explicitly inform it about this. here is the popup kaspersky showed.

• How to find hidden/cloak files in Windows 2003?

  Here is the point. I set Windows to display all the hidden files and protected operating system files but even after that, my antivirus (Kaspersky) is still getting a ".dll" file on "c:\windows\system32" saying it's a riskware 'Hidden.Object'. I tried to find this file everytime but it's not there. So I asked one of the developers to create a service that verifies the folder each 5 seconds and, if it founds the file, copies to another place. After a lot of research I just found out that every file with this same name on this specific server gets cloak, doesn't matter the file extension. How can I found this kind of file? How can I "uncloak" it? How can I know what this file is doing?

  I am trying to open port 80 and 3690 for HTTP and svnserve respectively. I have Windows Firewall off, and have tried temporarily disabling Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise, to no avail. According to http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/, both ports 80 and 3690 are still blocked. I can't think of what would be blocking them if Windows Firewall and my antivirus are disabled. • Is there supposed to be a Windows Network folder in the file manager?

  I pulled my hard drive out of my computer and started with a bootable usb version of Ubuntu, which I am using that at this point. At first boot, I see that there is a Windows folder when browsing network. Since there is no operating system present, besides the usb that I boot from, should there be a Windows network folder? Original question First of all I just want to say, I wish I had tried Ubuntu a couple years ago when I first heard about it, but I was like a lot of the population and went with the "easy way" and stuck with Windows because I didn't want to take the time to learn something new. Well, about 3 months ago I realized someone had hacked into my computer, and then found they had hacked my facebook account so I decided I had better do a complete credit check. I found student loans (totalling about 30,000 so far) had recently showed up on my credit report. I think it's going to be a long, long road to recovery now but I'm hoping Ubuntu will be a start and definitely an eye opener. My relationship with Windows is over. I had 3 antivirus programs running, none were protecting me like I thought they were. Turned out a free program that I downloaded was the only one that could detect and clean the virus, but by then it was too late. • aptana/eclipse blocks other apps

  Hi, I've got a fresh win7 installation, the only apps installed so far are aptana (beta 3)/eclipse and firefox + chrome (except antivirus and drivers) Every time I start aptana, chrome and firefox are blocked, so firefox can't load a webpage (or sometimes takes veeeery long) and chrome doesn't even take care of events (so for example hovering over a link doesn't change the cursor and a click does...nothing or typing in an url, press enter - nothing happens) First I thought, aptana downloads something and blocks my internet connection... but IE works well and also there are no signs in the taskmanager (cpu%, network or memory) When I close Aptana, all works as before. I tried updating Java, which didn't help... On my office-computer I use the same apps and it works perfect. Got any ideas? TIA, waquner

Currently I'm using sun messaging V6 which installed on Solaris 10 and my boss ask me to make a report for the best mail server today in the marketing? • Monitor windows startup process

  My win7 starts up pretty slow lately. I think it's some kind of malware, but my antivirus software doesn't pick up anything. How could i monitor the startup processes myself? It seems to me like either something's doing a lot of work, or some important windows process hangs for a while, since there's stuff that i can do while it's starting (like start a console), and stuff that i can't do (like execute the systeminfo command in the console) So if you happen to know how i can monitor my system, that would be great. Thx, you guys rule.
