  • Network printing -- setting up and printing over network using Mac OS X

    I've connected a USB printer to a Mac OS X (10.4) machine -- this computer is connected to a network with a registered IP address -- and enabled sharing through the System Preferences setting (under "Shared" and "Print & Fax". Is this printer shared through the Bonjour or CUPS protocol (does it matter that I know)? How do I sent a print job to this computer (also from a 10.4 OS X machine)? It does not show up in the list of printers in the Default Network when I go to "add printer"; do I need to do anything else (on either machine)? Thanks much!

  • Google Contacts and Mac OS X Address Book

    The sync that Google offers for Google Contacts < Mac OS X Address Book is seriously flawed. It doesn't sync automatically, it doesn't sync all contacts, it doesn't sync all fields. See here for a list of warnings and issues. Is there a better way to sync Google Contacts to Mac Address Book bidirectionally? Preferably free, and preferably without adding extra software. I have tried to do it through Plaxo (which has an excellent Mac Address Book sync, albeit through an extra software install), but Plaxo doesn't handle Google Sync well (no updates). UPDATE: For the new Mac OS X Snow Leopard this shouldn't be an issue. This question is looking for a Leopard answer.

    I have Dell studio with shared DSL internet connection my router is "NETGEAR DG834" & Network connection discription is "Broadcom netlink tm gigabit ethernet" this connection is working fine with dell laptop with Vista homepremium OS. My Question is? If i connect HPcompaq presario CQ61 in this connection it will automatically select Public network and display unidentified connection i tried several times but not suceeded its OS is Win7 home premium. but wireless networking is working fine only this problem is faceing with DSL cable connection when i diagnos the connection an error will generate "Local Area Connection does not have a valid IP configuration" in LAN Connection status window i noticed IPV4 & IPV6 Connectivity is showing "No Network Access" please can you clarify whats the problem.

  • Disable drop shadows around windows or the menu bar on OS X

    Nocturne has an option for disabling shadows around windows. But it's only available in night mode, and changing the mode (like when opening the application) causes an annoying screen flash animation. There's no way to disable the shadow under the menu bar either. MacThemes Forum / Removing the menubar dropshadow has a link to a .psd for making special desktop backgrounds that cancel out the shadow under the menu bar. But it only works if that area of the desktop picture has a low enough brightness. Some applications that cover the desktop (like DeskShade) also cover the menu bar's shadow. That's not a real solution though. Unsanity's ShadowKiller stopped working in either 10.5 or 10.6. (It does still work on 10.7.2, but the website says "NOT compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Leopard", and I couldn't get it to work on a 10.6 installation.)     Hi, I want to run an apache web server on a machine running OS X, with the server running on a small intranet LAN with no internet connection. I've set up web sharing and the web server is now accessible from other machines on the LAN using the custom name a.local - but what I would like to do is remove the .local part if possible. Does anyone know how i would go about configuring this in OS X? I wasn't sure if it would be the apache httpd.conf file or some DNS config that would be required.

  • How do I create /Groups/ folder in Mac OS X

    I am familiar with adding Groups with the GUI in MAC OS X, but I am trying to do it via SSH to a computer I remotely manage as a production server. I want to create / modify some of my users for a particular directory by creating a new group. In Another helpful serverfault post, I see that I need to add the users to the group name at /Groups/foo, however my system's Groups folder does not exist... Does Mac OS X create the Groups directory only when you actually create the group – if there do not already exist any groups on the Machine? Is this something that I can do simply using: mkdir "Groups" Or maybe I'm wrong altogether. Any pointers for how to go about this with Unix? – I should note also that this group will be used to manage the access to a directory on my server via an .htaccess file. Thanks!

  • Mac OS X, MySQL Preference Pane doesn't work

    I downloaded and installed MySQL 5.1.47 for OS X 10.6 using the DMG archive: mysql-5.1.47-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg I also installed MySQL.prefPane and MySQLStartupItem.pkg. MySQL.prefPane is a Preference Pane. The problem is, whenever I attempt to start/stop MySQL from the Preference Pane, System Preferences just hangs. It runs at about 50% CPU forever, eventually I have for force quit System Preferences. The same thing happens if I toggle "Automatically Start MySQL Server on Startup". Basically the MySQL Preference Pane is not functional. Note that I have no problem starting MySQL from the command line: sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe I have tried reinstalling MySQL and the Preference Pane. I'm using the standard installation location, nothing out of the ordinary. Every time the MySQL Preference Pane just hangs. I'm doing this on a Macbook Pro (Intel) running OS X 10.6.3. There are no old versions of MySQL on this machine.

    I am trying to resize my existing Mac OS Extended partition on my Macbook to install Windows 7 (using steps similar to these), but when ever I go to apply the changes, I get this error: Partition failed Partition failed with the error: The partition cannot be resized. Try reducing the amount of change in the size of the partition. The total capacity of the hard drive in question is 260GB, with the entirety being taken up by the OS X boot partition. There is I am aiming to shrink that partition down to 60GB. How can I fix this problem? I have been reducing the amount of change by 10GB each attempt, but it still is not working. I assume the problem is that there is not a large amount of continuous space on the device. Is there some way to can do a manual defrag that would rectify this problem?

    I'm trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on a MacBook that previously had 10.4 on it. i am getting an error after selecting the language. What could be causing a box on the screen that says: Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer. It's an Intel MacBook with 1GB of DDR2 memory. 80GB hard drive. It has been formatted now, so there's no going back. According to the System Profiler on the 10.5 boot CD, the MacBook is version MacBook2,1. Thanks!

    Hi, My host OS is: Ubuntu 10.10. One of my virtual OS is: Ubuntu 9.04 and another one is: Ubuntu 10.04. All of these virtualisation has been completed with Virtualbox. Now, I need to replicate those two servers, one server is running in Ubuntu 9.04 and another one is running in Ubuntu 10.04. Is it possible? If yes, can you please provide me some help? So, in short words, the whole thing is: Host: Ubuntu 10.10 Guest 1: Ubuntu 9.04 Guest 2: Ubuntu 10.04 Job: Must have to run two guests at a time. Because, two LDAP of two guests need to replicate. Now, If I try to get the first Guest ( hostname: mohib-laptop ) from second Guest ( hostname: zaman-laptop ), it is not getting! Do I need to change IP address of those both Guests? Or are there anything which will make it possible?

  • Auto-hide OS X menu bar?

    Is there a way to auto-hide the OS X menu bar, like is possible with the Dock? There was an application "Menufela" that did this for Tiger, but I'm not aware of anything similar for Leopard/Snow Leopard.. I'm almost certain this is (programatically) doable, because in full-screen applications the menu bar is hidden, and reappears when you mouse the mouse is at the top of the screen..     I have an Ubuntu 12.04 NFS server and I have an iMac NFS client running OS X 10.6.8. I believe I have everything set up properly, yet I still get this error on the Mac: mount_nfs: can't access /nfs: Permission denied My exports on the Linux server uses the insecure option like this: /export/home/me/ 192.168.100.132(rw,subtree_check,insecure,nohide) Where 192.168.100.132 is the address of my Mac. I have even tried using -o resvport on the Mac (in addition to insecure on Linux) and I still get the same error as above. $ sudo mount -t nfs -o resvport 192.168.100.1:/home/me /Users/me/mount Here is the output of showmount: # showmount -e 192.168.100.1 Export list for 192.168.100.1: /export/home/me 192.168.100.132 .... I have reviewed this similar question: How to mount NFS export on Mac OS X? And I have reviewed this frequently recommended tutorial: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/apple-mac-osx-nfs-mount-command-tutorial/ I still can't find a solution. Any ideas?

    Hi all, How do I find all installed apache and PHP occurences on a Mac OS X system in bash and uninstall them? My motivation: I've managed to install multiple apache and PHP packages (I believe it's called packages in Unix terms, correct?) at some point, and I'ld like to start out fresh again, without completely re-installing Mac OS X again. Also, I'ld like to install suPHP along with apache this time, and I believe I need to compile apache with some additional stuff for that.     Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) What would be the ideal machine for this (preferably AMD base chip) I'm not expecting the best performance out of this setup, just a decent one to host one drupal instance, one ASP.NET MVC (future, not now), and one Tomcat/Jetty instance. NB: If you have a better suggestions on the setup, feel free to let me know (e.g: maybe Drupal and Tomcat can be in one instance but move the database to another instance instead of 1 instance map to 1 webserver and 1 dbserver).     A few newbie Mac OS X questions: Despite the fact that most applications can be installed by dragging them to the Applications directory, some software still requires the creation of a separate program folder. Where should I put this folder? Does it matter? Is the Applications directory special somehow, or is it just a convenient folder with a custom icon? If I move one of these program folders later on, will the program still work? Will shortcuts to files in the folder break? Is there something similar to a registry in Mac OS X?

  • Windows OS's cannot boot on new internal harddrive

    I have installed a new internal 500GB hard drive into a Dell Inspiron N4030 and it appears that the installation was entirely successful. The BIOS recognizes the drive and shows the serial number of the hard drive. The problem is that I cannot boot any Windows OS. I have tried XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. It displays only a black screen with a blinking cursor. Fedora boots successfully. My old hard drive crashed, but would atleast boot up these OS's before it died. Any help?
