  • Forwarding ports with ssh on Linux

    I have a database server, let's call it: dbserver I have a web server with access to my dbserver, let's call it: webserver I have a development machine that I'd like to use to access a database on dbserver, let's call it: dev dbserver has a firewall rule set to allow TCP requests from webserver to dbserver:1433 I'd like to set up a tunnel from dev:1433 to dbserver:1433, so all requests to 1433 on dev are passed along to dbserver:1433 My sshd_config on webserver has the following rules set: AllowTcpForwarding yes GatewayPorts yes This is what I've tried: ssh -v -L localhost:1433:dbserver:1433 webserver In another terminal: telnet localhost 1433 Results in: Trying ::1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. Connection closed by foreign host. Any idea what I'm doing wrong here? Thanks in advance!

  • Using Remote Desktop, connect to a Windows 7 domain user account without first logging on locally?

    I have a dell laptop (henceforth we'll call this the server) running Windows 7 Enterprise. The server is part of my company's domain. My primary user account is a domain account. When I am at home and not connected to the domain, I prefer to connect to the server using Remote Desktop Connection from my MacBook Pro (we'll call this the client). The problem is, that if I do not physically login to the server, I am unable to connect to it using RDC from the client. I have a local administrator account on the server, and connecting to it via RDC works just fine. I had a feeling that the Mac RDC application was not giving me the full story, so I attempted the same procedure from a Windows 7 client. When trying to login, I get this message: So basically, If I logon to the server physically with my domain user and lock the computer, I can then successfully logon from the client. Otherwise, I am unable to connect.

  • Considerations for spanned volumes with SAN's LUN.

    I want to know, before going forward, what I can expected in lost of performance (or not) of creating Windows spanned volumes from LUN delivered by a SAN ? I don't know which kind of SAN is (we don't administer it), but they give us 10 300 Gb LUN to our Windows 2k8 R2 (Vmware) and we need larger volume so we think to spanned some disk but we are aware of the performance issue.     I need a tool to automatically backup my Drupal installations from my server to my laptop. In other terms, I need to copy 1 folder (all my Drupals are inside this folder) and all databases. So I was wondering if I just need to write a script on my laptop connecting to the server every week copying the folder with all mysql databases informing me by email if the backup has been succesfull do you know if I can find some tutorial for it ? or download such script ? thanks

    I have nginx and php5-fpm running on ubuntu 11.04. I have installed phpmyadmin but im having trouble accessing it. I would like to access it via http://localhost/phpmyadmin I've used all the default locations for the nginx, php5, and phpmyadmin installs.     hi, I want to automate the backup of my databases and files with cron. Should I add the following lines to crontab ? mysqldump -u root -pPASSWORD database_name | gzip > /home/backup/database_`date +\%m-\%d-\%Y`.sql.gz svn commit -m "Committing the working copy containing the database dump" First of all, is this a good approach? It is not clear how to specify the repository and the working copy with svn? How can I run svn only when the mysqldump is done and not before ? Avoiding conflicts

    Hi all, when I try to copy any file with scp on Mac OS X Snow Leopard from another machine I get this error: scp [email protected]:/home/me/file.zip . Password: ... ---> Couldn't open /dev/null: Permission denied this is the output of "ls -l /dev/null": crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 3, 2 May 14 14:10 /dev/null I am in the group wheel, and even if I do "sudo scp..." it doesn't work. It's driving me crazy, do you have any suggestion? Thanx!

  • How to setup NTFS ACL with Acces Based Enumeration

    We're in the process of migrating from Novell Netware to Windows 2K8 R2 infrastructure (AD, File server, print server... etc) My question is about ACL. While Netware and Windows are totally different, I want to be sure my thnking is good before screwing everything up! There's a scenario : F: | +-- DATA <= Shared as DATA with Access based enumeration | +-- Folder 1 +-- Team 1's Folder +-- Team 2's Folder ... In that case, by default, rights are herited from the F: to the deepest folders. What we want : Administrators group have full control top - down. From DATA, ABE list only folders that users have access. (ex. : I'm in group Team 2, I see Team 2's Folder). From what I understand, at DATA I remove all NTFS ACL to be herited (ex. Users Group), be sure to keep Administrators Group and SYSTEM user. After that, grant Full control (or any right needed) on each folder to Groups or Users that have to have access. Does I'm wrong ? Anything I should take care of ? Any help to my understanding will be very appreciated. Regards.

  • Laptop shuts down randomly without warning

    My Asus Zenbook UX32V turns off randomly when I'm working on it. This happens both when the computer is recently turned on (5 minutes), and after being on for several days. I'm not running any heavy software The laptop is not heating The fan is not working on the maximum capacity (it's not heating) It happens when the laptop is lying still on the table It is no warning, it simply goes black It happens both when charging and on battery My guess is that it suddenly lose power somehow. What puzzles me is that I can flip the laptop upside down, sideways, shake it, etc. without it shutting off. This makes me think it's not something that's loose causing occasional short-circuits. I realize that the laptop probably doesn't like flipping and shaking, but it was the best way I could troubleshoot. I rarely turn the computer off, only have it in hibernate or sleep mode (most often hibernate). I've never experienced that the laptop is off when I wake it up from sleep mode. I've had the problem for a few months and it happens 2-8 times a week. Specs: Asus Zenbook UX32V Windows 8.1 (it happened in Windows 8.0 too) Intel i5-3317U CPU @ 1.70GHz The laptop is approx 1.5 years, but it has a small dent on one of the sides that probably voids the warranty. The dent has been there since week one and I don't think it's related to the problems I'm having now. Does anyone have a clue what might cause this, and how it might be fixed? I've read all other questions (some of which are listed below) that seem related to my issue, but none report the same behavior as I'm experiencing.     I have currently installed minify on on of my websites however I am currently getting hammered with email from CSF/LFD.   • mount dev, proc, sys in a chroot environment?

    I'm trying to create a Linux image with custom picked packages. I followed the guide here http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=4766.0 However, when I tried to install some packages, it failed to configure due to missing the proc, sys, dev directories. So, I learned from other places that I need to "mount" the host proc, ... directories to my chroot environment. Though, I saw two syntax and am not sure which one to use. In host machine: mount --bind /proc <chroot dir>/proc and another syntax (in chroot envrionment): mount -t proc none /proc Which one should I use, and what are the difference? Edit: What I'm trying to do is to hand craft the packages I'm going to use on an XO laptop, because compiling packages takes really long time on the real XO hardware, if I can build all the packages I need and just flash the image to the XO, I can save time and space.

    My application is quite interactive application with lots of colors and drag-and-drop functionality, but no fancy 3D-stuff or animations or video, so I only used plain GDI (no GDI Plus, No DirectX). In the past my applications ran in desktops or laptops, and I suggested my customers to invest in a decent video card, with: a minimum resolution of 1280x1024 a minimum color depth of 24 pixels X Megabytes of memory on the video card Now my users are switching more and more to terminal servers, therefore my question: What is the importance of a video card on a terminal server? Is a video card needed anyway on the terminal server? If it is, is the resolution of the remote desktop client limited to the resolutions supported by the video card on the server? Can the choice of a video card in the server influence the performance of the applications running on the terminal server (but shown on a desktop PC)? If I start to make use of graphical libraries (like Qt) or things like DirectX, will this then have an influence on the choice of video card on the terminal server? Are calculations in that case 'offloaded' to the video card? Even on the terminal server? Thanks.

  • Why does my screen dim on a desktop installation of Windows 7?

    Periodically, while using my Windows 7 Pro desktop installation, the screen suddenly dims. The brightness is about 75% normal (estimate). It's as if I am in a power-saving mode on a laptop running on batteries. But this is a full desktop installation. I know it is not a hardware glitch or monitor adjustment issue because the Windows cursor is still bright white while everything else goes dim. The Control Panel Power Options have not been changed. They are set to "Balanced [active]" and I have tried restoring the default settings. Flipping through the power and display settings, everything looks "normal." There is no screen saver or power-off-after settings apparent. Rebooting the system resets everything to full brightness but I can't find a way to restore it in Windows or to keep it from happening in the first place. Suggestions?

The idea is to allow a professor to still project and display content while walking around the room with their tablet. We have 2 SSID which our clients can connect to (one which connects to a DHCP we control, the other to a different DHCP we don't - each with their own WINS).
