• Java in a browser on Ubuntu

  So I am running an old version of Ubuntu and all of a sudden, my capabilities to run Java in a browser have stopped and it no longer executes properly. Someone else set this up for me, but I believe it's running icedtea plugin 6 and jre 6. What would be the best ways to troubleshoot this? I suppose I could try downloading icedtea 7 and jre 7 (sun or openjdK) and see if that works? Also, in general, is installing icedtea, installing a java runtime environment, and then symlinking something to the plugins directory of your browser the best way to get Java working on most Linux systems? Unfortunately, there are many guides all over the internet offering totally different solutions, but this is probably the most common I've seen (not sure how well it works). My main use is downloading an executing .jnlp files (browsers should open it automatically). Although, I've seen people using "javasw" to run the file outside of a browser. Is this something I could consider doing? I can't seem to find javasw packaged for my version of Ubuntu.

• How to delete a faulty FTP connection in Aptana?

  Hi, I just created an FTP connection in Aptana in which I made a mistake. I told Aptana to remember it anyway while I looked up the correct data (user/password and such). Now I want to edit the FTP connection but as soon as I click it tries to connect which results in an error. If I try to delete it, same story, it tries to connect and I get the error and the delete doesn't go through. So, I have a non working FTP connection that I can't delete nor edit.How do I get rid of this thing? Or how do I correct it? Cheers.

• connected ethernet without disabling wireless, now I have *two* LAN ip's?

  Ok I'm on ubuntu 11.04, not too knowledgeable about network stuff. Usually people ask things like "wired works but wireless does not!". In m y case, I'm just curious about what it means to have both of them seemingly connected. In 'ipconfig' in shell I see that I have 192.168.1.2 for the wireless AND 192.168.1.3 for the ethernet. What does this mean for applications, does one of the two get precedence? It seems like my pages load slightly faster, so perhaps the ethernet is being used, but I could be imagining the speedup...

• Disable word completion dialog when pressing escape in Safari

  Behavior: Load Safari 5.0 on mac. Press command+f to search for some text. Type something, and find it on the page. Hit esc to cancel the search. Irritatingly, get word completion menu rather than canceling. Is there any way to make esc cancel the search, like it used to with Safari 4.0, instead of pulling up a word completion dialog? It's very annoying. Failing that, what's the best way to cancel the search with the keyboard? Note: this also happens in any text field, the search box, the location bar etc.

• Is there a multi-user Remote Desktop app for Mac OS X?

  Is there a remote desktop app for the Mac that allows multiple people to be remoted in at the same time, similar to RDP in Windows? I've used VNC, but that only allows one person to control the computer. For some background: I'd like to set up a mac that many users can RDP into from PC's to do XCode development. I did some searching and didn't find anything, so I'm assuming it's just not possible, but I want to confirm. Thanks. • Sync file system changes in a folder to server on LAN (via SSH or NFS) automatically

  Hi, I'm looking for a solution that'll automatically sync file system changes in "/folder1" to "/folder2". Any change should be synced (deleted files, new folders etc.) without any confirmation. Preferably the changes will happen to "/folder2" instantly. "/folder1" is on my hdd "/folder2" is on a server on the LAN (can be accessed via SSH or NFS) I'm on OS X 10.6. • Configure users and groups for Git

  I want to create Git server on which every developer can commit code with his own linux account. The Git repository is initialized under the directory /opt/git_repo.git I created a group developers which owns the directory git_repo.git. Then I created three users which are part of the same group - DeA, DevB, DevC. I created a soft link into each developer home directory which points to the /opt/git_repo.git location. The problem is that when a user connects to the Git server and use the soft link to access the files he cannot do it. Can you help me what are the proper steps and commands to configure the repository?

• Installing old version of mysql

  I'm trying to troubleshoot a database import problem and want to duplicate the environment onto another server. This will require installing an older version of mysql, but the packages that are listed are only showing a recent version. I'm currently running debian wheezy 7.1 and what was installed was the packaged 5.5.31. What is the official way to install an older copy? I guess I could hunt around Google and hope to find some files of the same version to install from source, but this doesn't seem like a reliable method.

  I have noticed that some days I am able to chat while using Gmail, and other days I am not. It would make sense to me that I would either always be blocked, or never. But I can't figure out why it seems to change daily or weekly. Is Google constantly changing the URLs involved so that the censoring companies (they use websense where I work) have to play catch up? Or is there some other reason I'm missing? I am more interested in the technical reason it is might be happening than in an actual work around.

• Hosting ESXI (free edition) [closed]

  We currently have one physical server running the free version of VMWare ESXi that virtualizes a Win SBS 2003 server and a Citrix server. We need to collocate the server and are investigating our options. Are there places that will host our virtual servers and save us the expense of shipping the physical server out for collocation. In my mind we'd copy the Vms to disk and ship them out. Does the fact that we're using the free version of ESXi create a barrier to this idea?   The purpose of the JLabel is to show who a message is to, like in a mail client e.g. To: John, Mary, Peter, Frank, Tom, Harry I will have the names in a vector so can build up a string from that and then set the label's text to this string. However it has the potential to get quite long. I was think it might be nice to have something like this: To: John, Mary, Peter, Frank, Tom, Harry, ... Then when you click on the '...', it will expand more or just show a tool tip if you mouse over the ... Yes this idea is stolen from Thunderbird! I am open to other ideas, don't have to use a JLabel. I want to search the table and list out any users that share the same non-unique user name.   Hi there, In our compass mapping, we're boosting "better" documents to push them up in the list of search results. Something like this: <boost name="boostFactor" default="1.0"/> <property name="name"><meta-data>name</meta-data></property> While this works fine for fulltext search, it does not when doing a field search, e.g. the boost is ignored when searching something like name:Peter Is there any way to enable boosting for field searches? • Algorithm to find a measurement of similarity between lists.

  Given that I have two lists that each contain a separate subset of a common superset, is there an algorithm to give me a similarity measurement? Example: A = { John, Mary, Kate, Peter } and B = { Peter, James, Mary, Kate } How similar are these two lists? Note that I do not know all elements of the common superset. Update: I was unclear and I have probably used the word 'set' in a sloppy fashion. My apologies. Clarification: Order is of importance. If identical elements occupy the same position in the list, we have the highest similarity for that element. The similarity decreased the farther apart the identical elements are. The similarity is even lower if the element only exists in one of the lists. I could even add the extra dimension that lower indices are of greater value, so a a[1] == b[1] is worth more than a[9] == b[9], but that is mainly cause I am curious.
