  • moving to a new dedicated server and need advice on the new setup

    I currently have a dedicated server that we have outgrown and we are moving to another server. Our current setup was a 8gb W2008R2 server running a W2008R2 IIS virtual machine using VMWare. We are moving to a 2 cpu 24 gb server with W2012 R2 on Hyper-V. On our virtual machine we are running iis 7.5 and sql server. Sql Server seems to want to eat up all the memory so I had to cap it at 2gb, which doesn't seem sufficient. My question is, when I move the virtual machine to the new server, should I create 2 virtual machines, one for sql server and one for IIS? Or should I leave them both on the same virtual machine? Or even, put the Sql Server on the dedicated server and run the IIS in the vm? I'd like some input on how this should be done, I've not got the experience needed to make the right call. Thanks!

  • Command window missing default 8x12 font

    Installation: Windows Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Service role When I logon locally my command window (cmd.exe) displays with default font that is 8x12. But when I logon remotely and open command window, it opens with the smallest possible font selection. Opening window properties and setting font size, the default 8x12 font is missing from the list. What should I do to get this font back in the list? Following screenshots show settings when logged on locally and remotely.   • Entering new user data into AD LDS

    I need some help configuring AD LDS (Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services). I'm not an administrator, have never configured domains and I don't have a clue how to add new users to existing domains. The thing is I need to develop an app on top of Sharepoint 2010 that must be connected to AD. I've chosen AD LDS because I can install it on Windows 7 and it acts as an active directory even though there's no domain controller present in the network. What I've done so far: I've installed AD LDS I've added a new instance with appication directory partition name DN=Air,DC=Watanabe,DC=pri I can connect to it using ADSI Edit and see all kinds of strange But now I don't know what to do? When it opens I can see the window below, but where's next? Can anybody give me some guidelines, how can I add domain users, so I can use them in my app AD required app?

  • Bacula backup on Linux, restore on FreeBSD

    I'd like to migrate my storage server from Linux (Debian) to FreeBSD. Biggest part of this is restoring backups saved on Linux to tape volumes on the newly installed FreeBSD. Unfortunately I don't have anywhere to test this on at the moment but I'd like to ask you if you're aware of any incompatiblities or Bacula specific settings that should be used to make this as smooth of a process as possible.

    The server runs well but I wonder if I should get more RAM. I only have a few MB of "free" memory and 1.2GB of "cached" memory: free: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3945 3893 51 0 28 1216 -/+ buffers/cache: 2648 1296 Swap: 3895 857 3038 I learned that cached memory is used while it's free and not.   • Apache w/out internet connection

    I have a Vista laptop that I have been running Apache / MySql / Php / PhpMyAdmin on for quite some time without fail. I just use it to test bits of code here and there etc. No problems, until recently when I needed to test something and I happened to be in a place that I could not get an internet connection. Why am I unable to access localhost from the same machine without an internet connection? I am type http://localhost..etc into the browser's address bar and I get the message that I am unable to access without an internet connection. I checked my windows/system32/etc/hosts file and the first two lines are 127.0.0.1 localhost ::1 localhost What am I missing here?

  • Solaris Administration Web GUI?

    I recently installed Solaris 11 x86 text install (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/downloads/index.html?ssSourceSiteId=ocomen) to be used as a file server running ZFS. I noticed that I'm given the bare minimum in terms of packages. Is there an official oracle web GUI for managing ZFS? I ran a netstat and it doesn't appear to have installed any webserver thats listening. I saw something from a couple years ago, but apparently it's not packaged or maintained anymore (https://blogs.oracle.com/talley/entry/manage_zfs_from_your_browser). I tried pkg install network-console, but it says that the package isn't available for my platform. Any ideas? I'd like to stick with Oracle Solaris instead of the open source alternatives, if possible.

  • Linksys WRT54Gx as Repeater Bridge

    I have a Linksys WRT54Gx router with DD-WRT software working fine. But. Is it possible to use it as a Repeater Bridge when the host router isn't configured to be in the default 192.168.1.1 subnet? I've set everything from these instructions. I've also tried setting repeater router's IP address to be inside host's subnet, setting Gateway + DNS IP addresses... But It still didn't work. Client machines connecting to second router (my Linksys) were configured to use DHCP and also static IPs within host's subnet. Nothing worked. Can anyone tell me how to configure it to make it work?

  • Is it possible to use XP visual styles (*.msstyles) or Windows Blinds in a thinapp portable applicat

    It's been a while since I made a portable (Office 2007) Thinapp application, and since then I've uninstalled VMWare from my machine to free up space, so I'd like to know if someone already knows the answer to this before I set up everything again to try it. I'm thinking of installing a visual style (*.msstyles, for XP) along with the application to thinapp before post-setup capture. Failing that, maybe I'll try with visual mods such as Windows Blinds. The purpose is to be able to run a portable application with a specific visual style. So my question is: Is it possible? (I believe it somehow is, since VirtualBox does something similar to XP Mode) If it is, will it work on a computer with the "classic" Windows style? If it's not, will it work with another virtualization software? (Xenocode?) If it's not possible with *.msstyles, will it work with visual mods such as Windows Blinds? Thanks for any input!   • Changed Folder Redirection on Server 2008 R2, I didn't see anything change.

    I need some help guys. I've just modified the Folder Redirection Policy on my server at work so the hiarcy resembles windows 7's user folder structure rather than XP. I did this to the book so I know its right. However, I'm still seeing that all the user accounts are still layed out as XP compatible folder hiracys. Is there somthing I need to do to update these accounts with the new policy?

However, does anyone have details/a link for a version of this that offers similar functionality but is in an excel spreadsheet.   • PCI-express - is there a typo in the Intel 5500 overview

    The overview for the 5500 and 5520 chipsets state that there is a total bandwidth of up to 48GB/s on each PCI Express x8 interface. http://www.intel.com/products/server/chipsets/5500-5520/5500-5520-overview.htm My understanding (admittedly from wikipedia) is that PCI-e Gen 2 runs at 500MB/s per lane. The 5520 has 36 lanes, and so would be limited to a total of 18GB/s. Am I missing something here, or is Intel's claimed 48GB/s a typo that should say 18GB/s ?

  • Is there a small business router that shows bandwidth usage graphs in the admin panel?

    I support a large number of public libraries that are having their networks upgraded in response to a grant application. These libraries are generally home to between 6-15 computers and have little or no tech services either onsite or contracted remotely. In order to justify current and future purchases, a number of the libraries have requested routers that can provide bandwidth usage graphs that they can show to their managing boards. Is there a small business router that displays traffic graphs in the router administration web interface? The router needs to suppport DHCP and basic firewalling. No other features are required. Further, the reports just need to show overall trends. It is not necessary to show traffic by IP, by protocol/application, or by time of day. They just need an overall week to week, month to month, trend line. I'm familiar with MRTG/PRTG/tools that collect SNMP data from the router, but the libraries don't have the expertise for the configuration. I've considered installing the tomato firmware on some cheap home/home office routers, but if there's a commercial product that can be purchased that would be significantly simpler. Also the library boards would be much more likely to approve the purchase of a commercial product over a 'hacked' one. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    I've installed Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 because I would like to administer my Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core machine. The problem that I'm getting when I try to run Server Manager is: Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message: Access is denied. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. This is what I've done so far: I'm running WinRM service on both machines (Server and Window 7) I've added my server to trusted hosts on my Windows 7 machine: winrm set winrm/config/client @{TrustedHosts="WINSRV2"} I've added registry entry on Windows 7 machine: reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f I've enabled Remote Management inbound rule on server firewall using CoreConfigurator 2.0 both machines are in the same subnet and when I search for network machines on Windows 7 I see my server. Question What else should I do to make it work? I would like to run several different remote management tools against my server machine.

We are looking for something that will provide the following functionality (or achieve the same result, i.e. a cost-effective backup strategy for files stored in Rackspace Cloud Files): Work out which files have been added to or modified in a Rackspace Cloud account (since the last backup). Create a ZIP (or similar) of these files and store them in Amazon Glacier. Keep a record of which files are in which ZIPs. Ideally, restore either a single file or all files from Glacier back into Rackspace.

    I would like to setup a machine with Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core and install following server roles: Active Directory Domain Services Active Directory Federation Services Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (I'm not sure whether I actually need this one - see note below) I'm obviously going to install Enterprise Edition. Question Can I have an AD administration graphical user interface to manage Active Directory on Server Core machine? I would really like to have it, because I'm not so keen to do stuff using power-shell, because I've never managed AD as well, so a GUI would be much more helpful, because I could at least visualize it a bit better and maybe understand AD structures. Note: I'm setting up development environment machine as well and installing Sharepoint Foundation 2010 on in so it would use this AD machine.

  • Why can't I route to some sites from my MacBook Pro that I can see from my iPad?

    I am on M1 Cable (residential) broadband in Singapore. I have an intermittent problem routing to some sites from my MacBook Pro—often Google-related sites (arduino.googlecode.com and ajax.googleapis.com right now, but sometimes even gmail.com.) This prevents StackExchange chat from working, for instance. Funny thing is, my iPad can route to those sites and they're on the same wireless network! I can ping the sites, but not traceroute to them which I find odd. That I can get through via the iPad implies the problem is with the MBP. In any case, calling M1 support is... not helpful. I get the same behaviour when I bypass the Airport Express entirely and plug the MBP directly into the cable modem. Currently I can only get one of these to work at a time. What I've already tried: wget wget -mk http://myblogurl It downloads the first page with list of posts, then stops with "20 redirections exceeded" message. WinHttpTrack It downloads the first page with redirection to the www.posterous.com home page instead of real page content. Edit: The url of the site I'm trying to backup is blog.safabyte.net

  • Apache times out after 2 minutes, when Apache TimeOut is 120

    We have a set up where the browser makes an http request to Box A which in turn makes an http request to Box B. What we're encountering is that Box A waits for Box B to respond for two minutes then the users sees: The page cannot be displayed Explanation: There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach and it cannot be displayed. Try the following: * Refresh page: Search for the page again by clicking the Refresh button. The timeout may have occurred due to Internet congestion. * Check spelling: Check that you typed the Web page address correctly. The address may have been mistyped. * Access from a link: If there is a link to the page you are looking for, try accessing the page from that link. Technical Information (for support personnel) * Error Code: 404 Not Found. The requested item could not be located. (12028) Watching the logs on Box B we see that it takes 5 minutes to do the work requested. The problem is that the apache time outs on both boxes are set 1200 (20m), not 120 (2m). Any ideas where to look?

  • Implications of using many USB web cameras

    I'm looking into connecting multiple low resolution USB webcams to a single computer. What implications might this have on performance? How does, for example, four 320x240 cameras fare against a single 640x480 camera? I'm not well versed in the architecture of the USB interface, what are the performance caveats? By performance I mean how would it affect the time to read the image data from multiple cameras compared to a single one.
