• Why isn't Japanese software industry as strong as their hardware technology?

  I admire Japanese technology and their innovation. They always seem to be one step ahead of everyone else. But why isn't their software industry just as developed? Why aren't there any Japanese operating systems, high-end game engines, 3D digital content creation applications? I would like to see their take on these and I think it could bring alot of innovation. Btw I mentioned 3D software because the animation industry is strong there as well, but they are using North American software for this.

  When I open *.deb packages downloaded from the internet in the Ubuntu software-center, it displays a "nice" name for the package (including upper- and lowercase, spaces, special characters, ...). When I create a *.deb package from binaries only using dpkg-deb -b, Ubuntu Software Center displays the "technical" package name (the one specified at the Package: field in the control file, limited to lowercase only, no spaces, ...). Is there any way to provide a string different from the "technical" package name (including upper- and lowercase, spaces, special characters, ...) for display in the Ubuntu software Center? Unfortunately, this can not be done via the short description (that is displayed below the "technical" name, but not replacing it).

As I get closer to my senior year I have noticed that continuing my studies is the best choice right for me now. I see that several universities offer an Computer Science Master's Degree and an Software Engineering degree. What are their pros and cons? I feel that while the Computer Science master's degree seems a little too broad the Software Engineering is too restrictive. I did not decide yet between an career of Software development or research ( algorithm development among other things ). Any advice would be greatly apreciated!

I feel like my resume is totally inappropriate for my current career goals. Listing laboratory skills and accomplishments is not the same as listing software development skills and accomplishments. Oddly enough, I can't seem to find any resources for writing a engineer's resume online that aren't older than 5 years.   I uses a lots of Google Apps Product in my Laptop, Tablet and Mobile. Since I never use all pre-installed software in Ubuntu, can I remove it? E.g like: LibreOffice | I use Google Doc etc. RhythmBox | I use Google Play Music Thunderbird | I use Gmail, don't like client Videos | Watch online Messaging | Hangouts And other softwares like Remmina Client, BitTorrent Client. Can I simply remove it in Ubuntu Software Centre? I like my Laptop clean and having unmessy software that I never use. I normally use Chromium Browser to do all the stuff, I think I am heavy user of Google, and love the simplicity of Ubuntu. Lol! Can anyone tell or guide me? Thanks!

• Ray-box Intersection Theory

  Hello: I wish to determine the intersection point between a ray and a box. The box is defined by its min 3D coordinate and max 3D coordinate and the ray is defined by its origin and the direction to which it points. Currently, I am forming a plane for each face of the box and I'm intersecting the ray with the plane. If the ray intersects the plane, then I check whether or not the intersection point is actually on the surface of the box. If so, I check whether it is the closest intersection for this ray and I return the closest intersection. The way I check whether the plane-intersection point is on the box surface itself is through a function bool PointOnBoxFace(R3Point point, R3Point corner1, R3Point corner2) { double min_x = min(corner1.X(), corner2.X()); double max_x = max(corner1.X(), corner2.X()); double min_y = min(corner1.Y(), corner2.Y()); double max_y = max(corner1.Y(), corner2.Y()); double min_z = min(corner1.Z(), corner2.Z()); double max_z = max(corner1.Z(), corner2.Z()); if(point.X() >= min_x && point.X() <= max_x && point.Y() >= min_y && point.Y() <= max_y && point.Z() >= min_z && point.Z() <= max_z) return true; return false; } where corner1 is one corner of the rectangle for that box face and corner2 is the opposite corner. My implementation works most of the time but sometimes it gives me the wrong intersection.   One of my four Linux software raid arrays drops one of its two devices when I reboot my system. The other three arrays work fine. I am running RAID1 on kernel version 2.6.32-5-amd64. Every time I reboot, /dev/md2 comes up with only one device. I can manually add the device by saying $ sudo mdadm /dev/md2 --add /dev/sdc1. • Problems migrating software RAID 5 to new server (linux)

  I have a CentOS setup with sw RAID5 that holds my data. Well, the server died, so I bought another box to migrate my drives to. Only thing is, I cannot get the RAID array rebuilt (not even sure it needs rebuilding, might just need the /dev/md0 mapping created... but I don't even know how to determine what I need!) Some details: RAID5 software (used mdadm) 4x 250GB drives (2 are SATA, 2 are EIDE -- would this matter? It worked fine in the other box...) latest CentOS distro built using mdadm I've got a decent amount of experience with standard linux stuff, but the hardware level stuff runs me in circles. I've spent some time googling and elsewhere here on SF, so please be kind for my newbie questions :). My question is this: how can I diagnose the problem? For all I know, I'm using the wrong device blocks when I try to rebuild the array, but I can't find the command to display only the devices that have some physical attachment. Is there some simple way for me to run mdadm, having it scan over all my physical drives, and say "hey, drives 2,5,6,7 are a software array, want me to mount it?" I basically just took the drives from my old box and put it into my new one. They show up in the BIOS. What steps do I need to take in order to get the array up, running, and mounted?   I have a Blu Ray player which can connect to the internet to play media from netflix and youtube. I am intrigued by the possibilities of BD-J and wondering just how far the technology can be taken. For instance: Could I write a twitter, facebook, rss reader, or email client? Can I write a game which would allows people to play each other over the web from their own tv? Could I write a DVR app which stored tv shows on the thumbdrive plugged into the player. Can I run my applications from a thumbdrive or do I need to put them on a Blu Ray disk? Does anyone have real experience with BD-J? How do you like it as a development platform? How would you recommend getting started? Can I develop in BD-J using open source tools like Eclipse, Maven, etc...

• Alternative software for Pinnacle PCTV 100e

  I have a Pinnacle PCTV 100e external USB cable television receiver. I've been using Pinnacle's software that came with the card (TVCenter Pro) to record things at given times. Things I don't like is an extremely high CPU load, and that it doesn't seem to halt the screensaver from running when watching in full screen. Also, I was away the last two weeks, and the schedules went terribly bust. Some items were recorded hours before or after the actual scheduled time (and now I missed some shows), and some recurring schedules weren't converted into the next occurrence correctly! Is there good alternative software that would work with my PCTV 100e? (Preferalby cheap or free) I've tried VLC Player, which gets video, but no audio. I've tried MediaPortal, which crashes when trying to scan for channels. When I select a channel manually, the stored mpg has big errors in encoding and is also missing audio. There's VirtualDub, but that doesn't have ready-made scheduled-recording options. This I can conjure some scheduled scripts for, but I've noticed the sync gets awfully wrong after some time. I've tried Windows Media Center, but it doesn't seem to support the PCTV 100e.

• Does ILOM on recent Sun rackmount servers fully support Linux?

  Do the recent Sun rackmount servers with ILOM fully support installation of Linux (Ubuntu or Fedora maybe) via the ILOM (connected by ssh) without having to hook up a display, kbd, and mouse? I have an old Sun v20z right now that will install Solaris no problem over the Service Processor but when trying to install Ubuntu 9 64-bit server I get one line on the console then it goes blank. I'd be interested in know which if any of the recent x64 models would allow me to install and run linux while completely avoiding any need for external display, keyboard, or mouse. Thanks!

File structure view helps you jump around the regions of your file (this is really awesome and clean). Class searching (you can use things like camel humps) Asks you which partial file to open once you find a class. It also has it's own plugin support, so you can do things like FxCop, documentation and relfector (all free). • Ubuntu Software Centre Issue (unity 11.10) after broken sun-java6-jre package installation

  I have been installing software packages from USC and I am getting the following error message. Worked fine one minute then the message below. Tried to search but couldn't find a solution Previously I was installing the sun-java6-jre package in terminal and had an connection outage and it didnt complete. I attempted an apt-get -f install with no success. i dont know what to try next. I'm relatively new to Linux. • How can I draw an arrow at the edge of the screen pointing to an object that is off screen?

  I am wishing to do what is described in this topic: http://www.allegro.cc/forums/print-thread/283220 I have attempted a variety of the methods mentioned here. First I tried to use the method described by Carrus85: Just take the ratio of the two triangle hypontenuses (doesn't matter which triagle you use for the other, I suggest point 1 and point 2 as the distance you calculate). This will give you the aspect ratio percentage of the triangle in the corner from the larger triangle. Then you simply multiply deltax by that value to get the x-coordinate offset, and deltay by that value to get the y-coordinate offset. But I could not find a way to calculate how far the object is away from the edge of the screen. I then tried using ray casting (which I have never done before) suggested by 23yrold3yrold: Fire a ray from the center of the screen to the offscreen object. Calculate where on the rectangle the ray intersects. There's your coordinates. I first calculated the hypotenuse of the triangle formed by the difference in x and y positions of the two points. I used this to create a unit vector along that line. I looped through that vector until either the x coordinate or the y coordinate was off the screen. The two current x and y values then form the x and y of the arrow. Arrows are displayed in the bottom right section of the screen when objects are located above and left of the screen as if the locations of the where the arrows are drawn have been rotated 180 degrees around the center of the screen. I assumed this was due to the fact that when I was calculating the hypotenuse of the triangle, it would always be positive regardless of whether or not the difference in x or difference in y is negative. Thinking about it, ray casting does not seem like a good way of solving the problem (due to the fact that it involves using sqrt() and a large for loop). Any help finding a suitable solution would be greatly appreciated, Thanks Adam

It would be helpful if the book covered: The software development process (requirements, design, coding, testing, maintenance) Testing roles (who performs each step in the process) Testing methods (white box and black box) Testing levels (unit testing, integration testing, etc) Testing process (Agile, waterfall, spiral) Testing tools (simulators, fixtures, and reporting software) Testing of embedded systems The goal here is to find an easy to read book that summarizes the best practices for ensuring software quality in an embedded system. It seems most texts cover the testing of application software where it is simpler to generate automated test cases or run a debugger. A book that provided solutions for improving quality in a system where the tests must be performed manually and therefore minimized would be ideal.

If you are really a pro you will write software for money, because you have life, wife, kids, taxes, you must earn. Please do not tell me that they are doing this for pleasure or hobby!

• Agile PLM on Developing Agile PLM: Software Lifecycle Management

  Change is constant.  That saying couldn’t be truer when applied to software development.   And with all that change comes extensive product complexity.  How do you manage it all?  As software developers ourselves, we can certainly empathize with the challenge. On April 3, 2012 Stephen Van Lare, VP of PLM Product Development, hosted a webcast to share how Oracle uses Agile to develop Agile – a PLM solution for managing a PLM solution!   Stephen passionately shared his unique insight based on 10 years of using Agile PLM to manage the development process, as well as customer use cases.  He shared our time-proven view of the software’s relationship to the product record, while pointing out that PLM is not source control.  He began with the challenges of software development, which boiled down to the deduction that “despite many great tools in the software development industry, it takes a lot more than good source control, more than good bug tracking, to get to an on-time, on-budget and quality release in your marketplace.   It requires defining the right things you want to do, managing the scope, managing your schedule, and, most importantly, managing the change to all those things over the lifecycle of the process. And this is the definition of PLM.”   Stephen then defined the relationship of PLM to the software development process by detailing the two main use cases –  Product Lifecycle and Mechatronics – which can be used simultaneously and in fact are already used in most industries today.  The Product Lifecycle use case is used to manage artifacts and change throughout product development, while the Mechatronics use case involves the software, hardware and electrical design in the BOM.  In essence, PLM is just as relevant to software as the rest of the BOM when trying to maximize profits during any phase of the lifecycle. • Does it matter to you that a software is "available source" but not "open source"

  You probably know the list of open source licenses officially approved by the OSI. Most notably I guess would be the GPL, MIT, [insert your favorite license here]. I recently ran into a project which although was open source (the creator made all source code available), was not officially open source under one of those official licenses. It released the source, but made no promise to release the source in the future. It allowed modification suggestions, but made no promises to accept patches and disallowed external distribution of externally-patched versions. It allowed the use of the software in commercial or paid projects, but disallowed the sale of the software itself. I suppose it could be called "available source" not open source as we like to think of it. I can see why the management team of a company wouldn't want to do business with this software. They can't fork it, they can't sell it, they can't create their own version of the software and distribute it or sell it. But would it matter to you as part of a software engineering team who's just using this software? I can still get my work done with it, I can use it in a project for which I'm paid (but I can't sell the software itself, which I'm not in the business of doing anyway), and I can make changes to the code to make it behave differently for my needs (but I can't make those modifications public), and if I do want those modifications officially made available to others, the approval is up to the project itself and they choose whether to incorporate them in an official release or not. So we know that a company that wants to base its business on this "available source" software can't do that, but as someone from the software engineering team, would those differences matter to you or do they seem less relevant? Curious what others think of this.

• How to sync Ubuntu/software/configurations between N computers with free software and/or without a cloud?

  Note: this question is not about syncing data in a Dropbox-like way (files, folders), it is more about syncing configurations. I would like to have exactly the same version of Ubuntu with all the software installed and configured both on my Desktop PC and on my Laptop PC (and maybe on my small netbook PC) without using Ubuntu Sync and with minimal maintenance effort (setup once, run for a long time). The use case is the following: I work on my Laptop PC and do some changes to software configuration, for example: configure vim to have a new plugin update the Search Tracker / Recoll file search index configure Thunderbird to have an additional IMAP account ('remember password') add some new bookmarks in Firefox/Chrome change the desktop background image install new software with apt-get install build and install new software with checkinstall etc. I do some 'sync' operation I switch to my Desktop PC and get all the changes from (1) working on the Desktop PC I work on my Desktop PC and do some changes to software configuration, for example: add new directory to the list of directories to be backed up by DejaDup add a new check spelling dictionary to the Libreoffice Writer configure the Terminator software to have colored fonts install new font into the Ubuntu system configure Ekiga to make phone calls etc. I do some 'sync' operation I switch to my Laptop PC and get all the changes from (1) and (4) working on the Laptop PC. Question: What free/open-source software can I use to sync both machines' Ubuntu systems, installed software and configurations? Is it possible to do that without any cloud services? Complementary question: It is obvious that the Desktop PC and the Laptop PC have different hardware configurations. How does the 'sync software' in question deal with video drivers, wlan drivers and their configurations? Note: I do not need all the PCs to be synced at the same time, because I work with only one single machine at once. Note: I considered to use Chef to solve the problem, but it seems that it might be really cumbersome to maintain such a setup. Note: I also considered using a bootable USB with Ubuntu installed (portable Linux), but I am not sure that the video drivers will work then.
