• How to restore broken Ethernet functionality on Mac G5 running Mac OS 10.4.11 (Tiger)

  I had a disk error that rendered my Mac unbootable. I repaired it with Tech Tool 4, but now networking does not work. Network Preferences reports that my Ethernet cable is unplugged. I know this is bogus because when I boot from an emergency partition, networking works correctly. Furthermore, wireless networking is also broken, which I tested with a known-good Wi-Fi dongle. Whenever I try to change Network Port Configurations by creating a New or Renaming an existing one, example: I get this message in the console: Error - PortScanner - setDevice, device == nil! Error - PortScanner - setDevice, device == nil! In sets of two as shown. When I try to invoke the Network Diagnostics app, it immediately crashes. My first thought is to reinstall Tiger with the Archive and Install method so I don't have to reinstall all my applications but I have lost my Tiger installer disk. My next thought is to buy Leopard for $107 on Amazon. If there is any way I can just repair my Tiger install I would be happy to save that money, though. This is not my main machine and I am loathe to put more money into it. How can I recover my network functionality? UPDATE: I found my Tiger install disk and tried an Archive and Install. It failed with an unhelpful error message along the lines of "Can't install, try again". I tried again but had the same error. My guess is, some corrupt or missing file in my User folder is preventing migration. I have a backup created with Super Duper that is a bit out of date but will startup the machine (with functional networking). I would love to just copy over the file(s) that got messed up but I don't even know where to look. What is the likely location of the System files that would cause the aforementioned symptoms?

• How to deduplicate 40TB of data?

  I've inherited a research cluster with ~40TB of data across three filesystems. The data stretches back almost 15 years, and there are most likely a good amount of duplicates as researchers copy each others data for different reasons and then just hang on to the copies. I know about de-duping tools like fdupes and rmlint. I'm trying to find one that will work on such a large dataset. I don't care if it takes weeks (or maybe even months) to crawl all the data - I'll probably throttle it anyway to go easy on the filesystems. But I need to find a tool that's either somehow super efficient with RAM, or can store all the intermediary data it needs in files rather than RAM. I'm assuming that my RAM (64GB) will be exhausted if I crawl through all this data as one set. I'm experimenting with fdupes now on a 900GB tree. It's 25% of the way through and RAM usage has been slowly creeping up the whole time, now it's at 700MB. Or, is there a way to direct a process to use disk-mapped RAM so there's much more available and it doesn't use system RAM? I'm running CentOS 6.

• Webcam becomes "Unknown Device" after Windows Messenger 2011 is installed

  I have Sony VAIO VGN-NS290J laptop. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I was able to find drivers for all hardware without any problems. Recently, I installed Microsoft Windows Live Essentials 2011, i.e. Windows Live Messenger 2011. Ever since that application is running on my computer, my webcam is not recognized by the OS any more. It is listed as the "Unknown Device" and placed in the Universal Serial Bus controllers group in the Device Manager. There don't seem to be any drivers for this webcam. It's a standard Sony Motion Eye web camera and Sony does not offer any drivers for it. There is one application to download that utilizes the camera, but there are no drivers (and the system is showing the same behavior regardless of the presence of the application). It happens from time to time that the webcam becomes recognized by the OS again, after a couple of restarts; but not always. Then it becomes unknown again. I am absolutely positive that this issue is caused by the Windows Live Messenger 2011, because same symptoms caused the same effects before. I wish to be able to continue to use this software, but also to use my webcam. I was wondering if anyone had a similar issue and if there is a way to fix it. Thanks for all the help, I appreciate it. Update: I have discovered a pattern - if the camera goes astray, restarting the machine does not bring it back; but switching the computer off and turning it back on does. Every time! This is getting super complicated :)

• How expensive to run PC 24/7 or how to figure out how to determine it?

  I realize this question is difficult to answer as it would be different based on users location, what there PC is doing and what hardware it consist of, along with other factors but I am hoping someone could give me a very rough estimate. I have always ran many PC's in my home 24/7 and I am just now looking at it from a money/cost of electric point of view. 1) I live in Central Florida. Can anyone guesstomate/estimate the avaerage monthly or daily cost of running your average PC? Intel quad core processor, 1 SSD drive for OS and programs and 4-5 1-2 TB hard drives in a RAID setup for data. 750watt PSU. What would your guess be? 2) Also is there an accurate way to figure this out (non-super technical and confusing to a non-math person please) Also I have seen those kill-a-watt devices, do they figure this kind of stuff out for you? 3) Does a larger PSU make your PC consume more power? Thanks for any help, you can most likely tell I am somewhat lost about this!

• get ubuntu terminal to send an escape sequence (control+shift+up)

  This problem starts when I use emacs ( with -nw option). Let me first explain it. I tried to define hotkey (for emacs) as following (global-set-key [(control shift up)] 'other-window) but it doesn't work (no error, just doesn't work), neither does (global-set-key [(control shift down)] 'other-window) But (global-set-key [(control shift right)] 'other-window) and (global-set-key [(control shift left)] 'other-window) work! But because the last two key combinations are used by emacs (as default), I don't wanna change them for other functions. So how could I make control-shift-up and control-shift-down work? I have googled "(control shift up)", it seems that control-shift-up is used by other people, (but not very few results). In the Stack Overflow forum, Gille answered me as following: Ctrl+Shift+Up does send a signal to your computer, but your terminal emulator is apparently not transmitting any escape sequence for it. So your problem is in two parts. First you must get your terminal emulator to send an escape sequence, which depends on your terminal emulator, and is Super User material, or Unix.SE if you're using a unix system. • Is there an high quality natural text reader for the mac?

  I'm reading about 150 pages of text on screen, every day. I will have to read about 15.000 in the next upcoming months. No joke. Well, the problem is this: I suffer from a sort of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder which forces me to read every sentence up to 10 times until I really get it. Mac OS X Snow Leopard has a built-in text reader with the name "Alex". Although it is already pretty good quality, I know there are far better natural sounding voices out there. I have heard already voices that are absolutely amazing compared to Alex. They're so good, that you can't tell anymore the difference between a real person or a computer. Alex still has this "metal factor" in its voice, which makes my ears hurt after 8 hours of listening. The next problem with Alex is, that he never makes a break after a sentence. Also, it's not possible to think about a sentence and then continue reading. It's also not possible to have him repeat a sentence, without tedious text selection and shortcut usage. Actually, the best tool I can imagine would have the option to read a sentence and move on to the next one after pressing a special key, OR repeating the previously one after pressing a special key. That would help so much! And if that's even with one of those bell lab / AT&T / whatever super-natural voices, even better! But it would be already a great relief if there was just a better tool to control Alex. To let him make breaks after sentences or let him speak big chunks of text sentence-by-sentence with fine-grained control over repetition and moving on. Is there anything?

• Better approach to archiving large amounts of original video footage using optical media (DVD/Blu-ra

  This question is to share my experience as well as ask for suggestions for better methods. Along with 2 friends, I completed the making of a short documentary film in 2006. Clip is at: http://www.youtube.com/mediamotioninvision The film was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 on Windows XP. More details and screenshot here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/smilingrobbie/1350235514/ ( note this is not intended to be a plug, we've moved on from this initial learning curve project ;) ) The film is in 4:3 standard definition 720x576 PAL format. As well as retaining the final 30minute film, I wanted to keep all original files that assembled together to make the film. The footage was 83.5Gb So I archived them to over 20 4.7Gb DVD recordables in the original .avi format (i.e. data DVD-ROM format, NOT DVD-Video Mpeg2) Some .avi DV video files were larger than 4.7Gb so I used 7-zip to split them ( here is a guide as to how to do that: http://www.linglom.com/2008/10/12/how-to-split-a-large-file-using-7-zip/ ) To recombine them, a dos shell command like this would do that: copy /b file.avi.* file.avi would do the job, where .* is a wild card to include all the split parts e.g. 001, 002...00n assuming they are all in the same directory path folder. file.avi is the recombined file identical to the original. Later on, I bought a LG BE06 LU10 USB 2.0 Super-multi Blu-ray burner and archived the footage to 2 (two) x 50Gb BD-R DL discs. Again in the original format, written as files to a BD-R in the BD-R BD-ROM UDF format readable by PC/Mac etc, NOT Blu-ray video/film format. This seems to be a good solution for me, because: the archive is in a robust, reasonably permanent, non-volatile medium, i.e. DVD recordable / Blu-ray (debates about stability of optical media organic chemical dye compounds/substrates aside) the format of the archive is accessible by open source tools or just plain Windows Explorer and it's not in a proprietary format I just thought I'd ask folks for their experience on better methods, if such exist.

• Change Laptop Wireless Card?

  I have just bought a new Samsung RV511 Laptop (the i5 Version). Anyway it comes installed with a Broadcom Wifi Card, I have a Super Atheros Mini Wifi Card that I would like to swap for the Broadcom one. I use Atheros for security auditing purposes in Linux that the Broadcom one is not good for. Trouble is I have never got to the barebones of a laptop, although I am a Custom PC Builder, laptops i generally have no concern for. Take a look at this picture, I took one back panel off to reveal some of the components: I believe the Wireless Card is where I marked the arrow pointing too. That little white square thing appears to be a sticker of the Wifi card, it says WLAN. How can I access it to swap it with my Atheros one. Do I need to remove all the outermost screws? There are screws located to the right of where I scribbled in Yellow and next to the HDD, do I just remove those? I dont want to destroy the machine, only just got it today. Appreciate some help thanks.

• NX Client for Windows 7 Opens Remote Desktop in Multiple Windows

  What I'm trying to do: access my Ubuntu desktop remotely via NX Client on my Windows 7 laptop. My environment: server: Ubuntu 10.10 on AMD 1Ghz/512MB RAM PC client: Windows 7 on ThinkPad sl510 Software: server is running NXServer 3.4.0. Using xfce4 window manager. Laptop is using NXClient for Windows In my NX Client "Desktop" settings I've selected "Unix" and "Custom" for OS and environment. I've also specified "startxfce4" as the application to launch when NX connects. I am able to authenticate an NX session on my laptop. By this I mean, I can start the client on my laptop, enter credentials for my Linux user, and NX establishes a connection to the server and attempts to open a remote desktop window. The problem, though, is that this remote desktop is "fragmented" into many Windows. One window will display the bulk of my desktop (complete with desktop icons for "Home," "File System," and "Trash") while another window will contain the taskbar, and another window will contain the application strip. I can select each of these Windows individually, but I cannot click on any objects within them. I've searched Super User, Ubuntu Forums, NX help, Server Fault, and tried many Google searches - none have turned up another case of this particular problem. I'm stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I might try? I'm guessing the problem has to do with my xfce config files, but I've only just setup this server - it's been a long time since I've used Linux and there's a lot I just don't know. What I am NOT trying to do: use Desktop sharing from Ubuntu, whereby I VNC into a desktop that I've already established on the server. I am trying to configure this Linux box as a headless server that I can stash someplace out-of-the-way in my house, then interact with through my laptop. I don't want to have a monitor or keyboard connected to the Linux box. Thanks for your help!

• What do I need to consider when buying hardware to meet my needs?

  I'm looking to build a new computer from the ground up. I'm not sure what to look out for and need guidance and help on how to pick the hardware needed to construct my new rig. How do I know what to buy? How do I find out if a given CPU will be enough for a certain game or application that I want to run? How do I find out if a given graphics card will be enough for a certain game or application? What is important when looking at motherboards? How much memory do I need? How do I know how much wattage I need for a power supply? What size case do I need? What relevant standards do I need to read up on and be aware of? PCI, PCIe, SATA, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, etc... What "gotchas" do I need to be on the lookout for? Please keep responses generation-agnostic to ensure they will be helpful to our future users. While Stack Exchange does not permit shopping recommendations, it doesn't provide any general advice to consider when buying hardware. • Burn .srt subtitles to AVC encoded video (transcoding with hardsubs) [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I hard code a movie with subtitles? I am looking for a software (or combination of software) that will allow me to hard burn subtitles from an .srt file, that has italics and bold typefaces, to an H.264/AVC encoded video so it can played from a desktop player that can't display external subtitles correctly. Ideally it could use Directshow as input as DirectVobSub makes nice job showing the subtitles as they should (allowing me to globally adjust font and size). CUDA use, to speed up encoding, will be great but not necessary. Video source is also H.264/AVC encoded. Audio is AC-3 5.1 and should be retained too but I have no problem re-muxin it later as long as it keeps synced. • Collect temperature and fan speed with munin from Windows 7 PC?

  Hi, I'm quite fond of munin and using it also at home to monitor my PCs. What was super-duper easy under Linux is pretty much unsolvable for me under Windows: I'd like to monitor CPU and Motherboard temperatures as well as fan speed. On Linux I'm using lm-sensors and the plugin for munin was basically there. I access already some information from my Windows machine via SNMP (disk space, CPU usage, memory usage); the graphs are simple as is the information exposed via SNMP, but they do their job. But when it comes to temperature and fan speed I'm running against a wall. My research so far resulted in that Windows does not by default provide out of the box ability to retrieve temperature/fan speed data. Third party applications are necessary which have know-how how to communicate with the Motherboard chips. The best I cam up with is that SpeedFan exposes a shared memory interface and there exists a library which hooks into Windows SNMP facility and bridges over to SpeedFans shared memory interface; it's called SFSNMP (site currently down). Unfortunately the library doesn't work, there's a bug report at SpeedFan open about it, but it's currently not moving (although the SFSNMP author is active there) . So, unless that's going to work like anytime soon, are there any alternatives? I'm not found of buying any software to get that feature, given that I take it as granted that my system exposes me the information to properly monitor it, but anyway don't just not answer because of this.

• Loss of network connectivity when playing video on Optoma HD180 projector

  Hi Folks - New to Super User, so I hope this question fits in with the guidelines. Very strange problem I am having, and I am at a loss as to how to continue troubleshooting this one. The basic problem is that when I attempt to watch streamed video on a particular display device (an Optoma HD180 projector), my network connectivity drops like a stone to barely measurable levels. This is my setup: I have a Dell H2C 730x running Windows 7 64bit. This particular computer has two ATI Radeon HD 4800 video cards. I have two Samsung 22" monitors connected to one card, and an Optoma HD180 digital projector connected to the other card via an HDMI cable. My internet connection is normally a reliable 6Mbps. The problem I am having occurs when I stream video (or even just browse the web) on the Optoma Projector. When I do this, my internet connection drops to practically zero (just a few kilobits per second). When I move the browser away from the projector, and over to one of my Samsung monitors, the internet connection comes right back. Note that the Optoma projector is on and enabled as a third monitor all this time. I can move the mouse around on the projector without triggering the problem. I tried pinging my router when I was playing a movie on one of the monitors, and I get a 1 millisecond response. However, when I have the movie playing on the Optoma projecter, pinging the router gives me response times in the hundreds of milliseconds, or times out completely. So, it clearly is something local to my machine - and not some sort of throttling occurring down the line. I would think that it is possibly something to do with the HDMI driver conflicting somehow with my network driver (which is a USB-based wireless connection). This one has me really stumped. Anyone have any ideas?

• What is a good WordPress theme for long Objective-C code samples [closed]

  As some of you iPhone developers know, Objective-C can be a verbose language. Long, descriptive variable and method names are the norm. I'm not complaining, it makes code easier to read and code completion makes it easy to type. But damn! Check out this method name for getting a cell in a table view: -(UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath; I have a WordPress blog where I publish my code samples as I'm learning the language. One thing I hate on other blogs is how the code won't fit in a column without that scroll bar or without wrapping around. It really made it hard for me to read and comprehend method names back when I was a super-noob (six months ago). Right now I use the clean-looking Fazyvo 1.0 theme by noonnoo. I love the look of it but the columns are just too narrow and it doesn't have support for wider ones. I could hand-modify it but then I'd have to maintain/redo those changes every time I updated it. Instead, I'm looking for a nice theme that has width control built-in and looks good at larger font sizes. Can anyone help? Note: I use WP-CodeBox for code syntax highlighting.

  I recently had a fault with my broadband connection. It turned out to be a fault with the ISP's or teleco's equipment. My ISP posted this diagnostic, but while I understand it in general, I'd like to to know more about the details. I'm assuming that ATM means Asynchronous Transfer Mode and PPP means Point to Point Protocol. • Disabling drop shadows around windows or the menu bar

  Nocturne can disable most shadows, but only in night mode. There's an annoying flash whenever it switches to night mode. (Eg when it's launched.) Also, it doesn't remove the shadow on the menubar. Sympa at MacThemes forums has posted a .psd file with a layer that cancels out the shadow under the menu bar. However it only works if that area of the desktop picture has a low enough brightness. Applications that cover the desktop (like DeskShade) also cover the menu bar's shadow. It's not a real solution though. Unsanity's ShadowKiller stopped working in 10.5. (The website still says NOT compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Leopard. ;)) WindowShade X doesn't have any shadow-tweaking features anymore. Being able to decrease the shadow radius would be fine as well. osx - How do I decrease the window shadow in Mac OS X? - Super User doesn't have any solutions though. No, I don't mean defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool yes. This seems like something that might just be possible without any extra applications. Or at least something that other applications besides Nocturne should support. So does anyone know any better solutions?

• What is the difference between disabling hibernation and idling time for a NAS?

  I have two D-LINK DNS-323 NAS boxes with two Seagate drives in each. The first one is about a year old, the second one about three months. The first two on Monster are each 1.5T drives while the last two on Origami are 2T drives. I have never been overly happy with the Monster drives but, outside of poor throughput on small files, they have been consistently available to all programs after I put a batch file into my startup to do a directly listing of each. I added the two new drives when I added the Origami box. But, watching the dos box that comes up, I rarely see both listed before the box disappears. Other programs, backups, Belarc, even my file browsers, seem to have a dickens of a time seeing O: and P:. Finally, I decided to go into setup and turn off hibernation. Performance HAS been better since and Belarc, for instance, now sees both drives. At the time of poking around, I noticed an Idle Time feature too. What is the difference between the two settings? And for added points, how much trouble am I in for turning off hibernation? The super bonus round ... anything ELSE I should have done? Thanks in advance, GM

  I'm researching a media PC for the living room. Playing videos, audio and streaming Internet is straightforward enough. I would also like to run a gaming console system. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this. So far I've discovered that a PS3 controller (thankfully it uses USB and Bluetooth) can be connected to a PC. I've also found that MAME, MESS and PCSX2 are all the emulators I need (I can even emulate a TI-83 calculator with MESS). These emulators can re-map keys, so for example I can make the Nintendo's A button to the PS3 X button, or the SNES key pad could be the PS3 keypad or the analog stick. There are also front-ends to these emulators which can do fancy things like image scaling, anti-aliasing and double-buffering to improve the image quality of an 8-bit Mario on a 50 inch plasma. My set up would be this: PS3 controller connecting over Bluetooth to the PC, PC with Windows, PS3 controller drivers, all my emulators, Network drive with all my ROMs, PC connected to TV via HDMI TV playing Super Mario Kart Does this sound feasible? Does anyone have experience of doing anything like this? Is this a good idea or should I grow up and stop living in the past?

• How do I use key combinations on an axis on a joystick in xorg?

  I'm using xserver-xorg-input-joystick on Debian Stable so I can use a joystick in place of the mouse. I have mouse movement working correctly, but got stuck trying to add functions for some other keys. These work: #Left stick #Pointer Option "MapAxis1" "mode=relative axis=1.5x" Option "MapAxis2" "mode=relative axis=1.5y" #Right stick #Arrow keys Option "MapAxis4" "mode=relative keylow=Left keyhigh=Right" Option "MapAxis5" "mode=relative keylow=Up keyhigh=Down" But when I try to make key combos (so I can navigate windows and screens in xmonad) I have no luck. #dpad #xmonad focus #up/down toggle window. l/r choose screen. Option "MapAxis8" "mode=relative keylow=Super_L,k keyhigh=Super_L,j" Option "MapAxis7" "mode=relative keylow=Super_L,w keyhigh=Super_L,e" I've also tried Super_R, plain old Super, Meta, and mod4mask, and anything else I can think of. These buttons print the letter, but don't appear to hold down the modifying key. The exception to that is shift. If I specify Shift_L or Shift_R, I get a capital letter. xev indicates that modifier keys are being pressed. If I lower Axis8, I get press Super_L, press k, release k, release Super_L. That looks like it should be working. Maybe this is an xmonad problem and not a joystick driver one? I'm also having trouble with getting an axis to use other XF86 keys: # triggers # song selection Option "MapAxis3" "mode=relative keylow=none keyhigh=XF86AudioForward" Option "MapAxis6" "mode=relative keylow=none keyhigh=XF86AudioBack" That does nothing. Any idea why? If it turns out that this isn't something I can do on an axis, but would work with a button, is there a way to treat my joysticks as buttons? • Am I getting the right memory for my motherboard?

  Hi technophiles; I have a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS motherboard. Also, the memory that came with my computer was two Transcend aXe RAM 1066MHZ 1GB modules. The thing is, I noticed that my motherboard has "DDR2 1200" written on it. This concerns me, have I bought slower memory than my computer is supposed to have ideally? Now, I'm not super concerned at a granular level about the best optimal RAM with the best CAS latency etc... but I do hope at least that I've got the right speed. Now, as far as I know, there is no such thing as ram at 1200MHZ? Am I right? You see, because I'm thinking of getting more RAM now, before I can't find the same type or speed any-more and just want to make sure it's the right thing. Furthermore, if the memory is slower than what I should be getting for my motherboard, what RAM should I be getting, and will that new RAM play nice with my old RAM? If I get new RAM at a different speed, would it be better / more beneficial performance-wise to omit the old RAM because of how the whole DUAL channel RAM thing works? I'm not too clued up on this area. Thanks chiefs.

• h264 inside FLV container vs. MP4 container?

  I am developing a tube site, and currently having issues with h264 format . By looking at youtube, I noticed they are putting their hi-def videos into mp4 container, so logically I did the same. Next, I installed mod_h264_streaming for lighttpd to make streaming and timeline-scrubbing work. Problem is, that large files (500mb+ at somewhat high resolution) take for EVER to even start buffering ( I read the flowplayer or other flash players need to download metadata first) . I moved the xmov atom to the front of the file with MP4Box (i tried qt-quickstart too) , and the problem didn't go away. Next I read online I need to interleave audio tracks, so I did that too. No change in slowness. So I tried putting the same exact h264 movie into an FLV container, and the playback buffering starts almost instantly - no slowness. So what am I missing here? Why would I choose MP4 container with mod_264_streaming module , which seems super-slow over a regular FLV container with lighttpd's built-in mod_flv_streaming ? Obviously many websites pick mp4 container , but I fail to understand why ? And as a side question - I tried using HTML5's VIDEO tag to try the same h264 MP4 movie, and the scrubbing is LIGHTING FAST! I looked into lighttpd's log file, and i noticed taht Flash Players append video.mp4?start=234 each time timeline is scrubbed, wheres HTML5's video tag does no such thing . Is this some sort of limitations of Flash ? Why Can't flash streaming be same fast as HTML5 streaming? Thanks to ALL who can help. I very much appreciate this community.

• Alienware Aurora R2 Slow Boot Up

  I have an Aurora R2 bought a few years ago, and recently I decided a RAM update and new Samsung SSD would be good for speed. So now it's super fast, with the exception of booting up. It still takes good 2 minutes to get past the first splash screen on the BIOS, it's only the BIOS, after that it's like lightning. I've Googled the issue, and the usual problem is the BIOS trying to boot from anything it can, with the fix being to change the boot menu. However I've changed it now, and it's still slow. When I disconnect the USB devices it speeds up, but I can't do that every time I want to boot the PC up! The only other option I can think of is upgrading the BIOS, however it seems that A04 is the recommended on for Aurora R2s, so I don't know if upgrading the BIOS could cause issues, especially not if it doesn't solve the issue. Also, when I disable my original hard drive in the boot menu, the PC won't boot up. Despite the Samsung one being fine to boot from, and the original not being needed as far as I know for starting Windows, it gives me an error message and makes me restart the PC, with a new boot configuration (with the original drive as second choice). Any ideas on how to make the BIOS boot faster? And why I need to have my original drive in the boot menu?

• How do I reinitialise a failed RAID 5 drive using terminal on Ubuntu Server

  I've currently put together a new system and part of that has been creating a software RAID 5 using 'mdadm' in Ubuntu Server. I successfully got to the point where I create the array using: sudo mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 I left it to do its thing overnight then used the following command to check on it: watch cat /proc/mdstat To which the following was returned: Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10] md0 : active raid5 sdd1[4](S) sdc1[2] sdb1[1] sda1[0](F) 5860535808 blocks super 1.2 level 5, 512k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/2] [_UU_] unused devices: <none> It appears that one has failed (and I'm not too savvy with why another is a spare). So, just to be sure that something else isn't amiss I wanted to try and re-engage the failed drive. Can someone explain how I can do that and what I should do with the spare (if anything).   I have 2 script. Script "A", Script "B". Script A is regulary watching the dhcpacks [dhcp release is configured to 2mins] in the logs, for the past 2 minutes. It writes the MAC addresses to a file [/dev/shm/dhcpacks-in-last-2min.txt] every 2 minutes. Ok, this is working, active clients are in this file. Super! Script B: On pastebin I'm trying to create a script, that watches the changes in /dev/shm/dhcpacks-in-last-2min.txt file ( every 1 sec). Ok. But: my watcher script [the pastebined][1] is not working fine - sometime it works, sometime it sends that someoneXY logged out`, but it's not true! Nothing happened, and the problem is not in the Script A. Can someone help me point out, what am I missing? How can I watch a file (in every sec), that contains only MAC addresses, and if someone doesn't get dhcpack in 2 minutes, the file /dev/shm/dhcpacks-in-last-2min.txt changes, and that clients MAC address will be gone from it, and i need to know, who was it [pastebined my script - but somethings wrong with it]. Thank you for any help..I've been pathing my script for days now.. :\

• Fix bad superblock on logical partition

  I was following http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_resi...xt3_partitions and when i reboot and run: root@Microknoppix:/home/knoppix# fsck -n /dev/sda7 fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2 e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010) fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks... fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda7 The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem.
