• Windows 2008 terminal server - How to restrict access to DVD/floppy?

  I has a very simple task. I need to block access to removable media (CD, DVD, floppy, USB drives etc.) on a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server for users and allow it for admins. I tried to enable the following policy in GPO: User Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Removable Storage Access All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access = Enabled But it did not work. I tried different physical and virtual 2008 servers with the same result. It works on Windows 7 but not on Windows 2008. Has anyone had success with this parameter on Windows 2008? Thank you

• How do I make Home / End keys behave Windows/Linux like in Terminal.app on Mac OS on Mac Pro laptop?

  Hello. I was wondering if somebody knows how to use home/end keys behave in a Windows/ Linux fashion. What I mean is that when I press Apple + Left (Home combo on a mac book pro laptop) it should go to the beginning of the line, and Apple + Right to the end of the line. Right now they change focus to the top of the scroll history. Drives me crazy. Home / End keys behave as expected in TextMate and such but not in terminal, which makes me think it's that app specific. I found some page saying that I need to remap key bindings but I can't do that on every mac i touch. So is there another shorcut in Mac I can use or how do I make Home/End keys behave as expected? • How to assign a keyboard shortcut to a specific New Window template in Terminal.app?

  I have a template set up in Snow Leopard's Terminal.app to create a new window or tab with my preferred emulation settings for a particular host that I use. I'd like to assign a keyboard shortcut to that template so that I can quickly create a new window with those settings. I tried using the Keyboard Shortcuts System Preference pane to do it. I can assign the shortcut key to the MyTemplate submenu, but it doesn't work when I try to use it. I suspect because the MyTemplate is listed in multiple submenus -- one for New Window and one for New Tab. How can I assign a keyboard shortcut to my new fancy template? PS. I do NOT wish to change my default (cmd-N) template.

• Terminal command to send data (plain text string) to a port at a remote computer.

  I am trying to send data (plain text string) to a port at a remote computer using terminal utility. The string would be used to trigger something on the remote computer running a program that would listen to that specific port. I used netcat command and tried a few combination of the following but can't seem to get the parameter right. Can someone point me out where am I doing wrong? eddy-2:Desktop eddy$ nc IPADDRESS PORT woc.txt eddy-2:Desktop eddy$ nc IPADDRESS PORT < woc.txt P.S: woc.txt contains plain text string of the said command. • What is the @ sign on the end of file permission on terminal?

  I have a sound file in my app that the iPhone does not play. After checking other problems I checked the file permission in terminal. What I can see is that the file permission of this file has a- @ at the end of it. I don't know if that is the problem but this is the only difference from the other sound files that plays fine. What is this sign ? Could it cause a problem ? • How Can I Speed Up Terminal.app or iTerm on Mac OSX?

  Every time I launch either iTerm or Terminal after not using it for a few hours, it takes anywhere from 10-20 seconds to return a prompt. The screen is blank, and although I can type I can't actually run any commands. If I quit either application, subsequent launches (if done relatively soon thereafter) are quite fast. The slowness only seems to occur if the app wasn't running for a few hours. I'm running OSX 10.5.7 on a MacBookPro. I have the exact same setup on another computer, with no slow downs. Any ideas how to speed things up again?

• Has anyone found a (eg bash) shell terminal for Windows as good as the OS X one?

  I am mostly using 'git-bash' which came with the Windows install of Git vcs. I think it is the same one that comes with Cygwin. It works fine technically but the UI sucks: have to right-click the title bar and go to Properties to change the window width most annoyingly... copy and paste and highlight with the mouse are equally cumbersome In contrast, the Terminal app that comes with OS X manages these with aplomb and makes it so much more comfortable to work with. You can even drag and drop a file on it and it will paste the file path in at your cursor! I have also tried: http://sourceforge.net/projects/win-bash http://www.steve.org.uk/Software/bash/ http://www.hamiltonlabs.com/cshell.htm None of these do copy and paste of text without cumbersome right-clicking. I am specifically looking for a Unix-flavoured shell in Windows so I don't have to use different shells between my home dev (Windows), the live server (Linux) or dev at the office (Mac). Yes I have Googled and haven't found one yet...

• Is there a Novatel Wireless Modem Emulator or something similar?

  Novatel Wireless provides their NovaCore SDK for developers wishing to interface with their line of modems. I'm currently developing an open source managed wrapper for it, but I'm having difficulties with testing. I own a Novatel MiFi and have mobile broadband service through Sprint, but that can only get me so far. The device is already activated, thus I can't test the network activation features of the NovaCore SDK. There are also certain features only available for HSPA modems, which I am not able to get in my area. Is there an emulator capable of emulating a Novatel Wireless modem so that I can test my library without physical hardware and an actual data connection? If not, do you have any other suggestions that might help in this situation? I've contacted Novatel Wireless via email and their developer forum, but have not received a response. Thanks!

It works fine on the emulator, but it gives me the following error when I try to install it on my HTC Hero (v1.5): Sorry! • Win XP Virtual Machine APP that won't START as a terminal services client

  I have a Win XP Virtual Machine APP that won't START as a terminal services client..... but if i disable terminal services inside the virtual machine, start the app then start terminal services... the APP runs fine (so long as terminal services are disabled when it starts.....!) My question is... is it possible to script things somehow so as to allow this app to be accessed directly from win 7 (with out having to manually run XP virtual machine)... I.E as I can not run it this way as it won't START with terminal services running.... I.e is it somehow possible to script things so the APP starts and terminal services is delayed then kicks in after a time delay.... (I know this may not be possible but I'm getting sick of all the mucking around...)

• How do I determine if a terminal is color-capable?

  I would like to change a program to automatically detect whether a terminal is color-capable or not, so when I run said program from within a non-color capable terminal (say M-x shell in (X)Emacs), color is automatically turned off. I don't want to hardcode the program to detect TERM={emacs,dumb}. I am thinking that termcap/terminfo should be able to help with this, but so far I've only managed to cobble together this (n)curses-using snippet of code, which fails badly when it can't find the terminal: #include <stdlib.h> #include <curses.h> int main(void) { int colors=0; initscr(); start_color(); colors=has_colors() ? 1 : 0; endwin(); printf(colors ? • How do I get Ctrl-Backspace to delete a word in vim within gnome-terminal?

  I'd like Ctrl-Backspace to delete the current word in vim insert mode. From within xterm I can pull this off via :inoremap <C-H> <C-W> but in gnome-terminal I cannot figure out a way to make it happen. When in vim insert mode, if I type control-v and then press backspace, I get ^H in xterm, and ^? in gnome-terminal. Unfortunately, :inoremap <C-?> <C-W> doesn't do the trick in gnome-terminal; control-backspace just erases a single character no matter what. Regarding ASCII codes: Gnome-terminal lets you change the backspace character under Edit - Profile Preferences - Compatibility. Unfortunately, no option works, as far as I can tell: whatever character I apply to Backspace via the settings, if I try mapping the character itself, like :inoremap <C-H> <C-W> then regular backspace and control-backspace both erase an entire word; and if I try mapping control plus that character, like :inoremap <C-^H> <C-W> then regular backspace and control-backspace just erase a single character.

• Blank desktop when logging into a Virtualized Windows 2008 Terminal Server?

  We have a Virtualized Terminal Server running Windows Server 2008. When the admin user logs in, everything is fine. When anyone else logs in, their desktop and start menu is blank (they have the taskbar, start button, and quick launch links though). If I go into Windows Explorer, I can see icons in their desktop folder (although the icon image is missing and it is just displaying the generic icon), but can't run any of them. If I login with a user that is part of the Administrator group in Active directory, I get the same behavior except I can launch the programs found in the Desktop Folder of Windows Explorer. I cannot drag these items out onto the desktop though - The cursor doesn't allow me to drop them. From Task Manager I can see that explorer.exe and dwm.exe are both running. The Authenticated Users and Interactive groups are both under the Users group, along with our network's Domain Users group. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it? Also, not sure if it's related but about 1 in every 3 logins just hangs at a completely blank blue screen (no start button, taskbar, or quick launch buttons) and needs to be disconnected / reset by an admin. Edit I just noticed that the desktop itself doesn't even respond to click events. It's almost like the entire desktop is missing. At first I thought it didn't respond to right-click events because of an AD policy, but then I noticed if you open the Start Menu and click the desktop, the start menu doesn't shut like it should

• terminal-window viewer for tab-delimited files in *nix?

  I work with a lot of tab-delimited data files, with varying columns of uncertain length. Typically, the way people view these files is to bring them down from the server to their Windows or Mac machine, and then open them up in Excel. This is certainly fully-featured, allowing filtering and other nice options. But sometimes, you just want to look at something quickly on the command line. I wrote a bare-bones utility to display the first<n>lines of a file like so: --- line 1 --- 1:{header-1} 2:{header-2} 3:... --- line 2 --- 1:{data-1} 2:{data-2} 3:... This is, obviously, very lame, but it's enough to pipe through grep, or figure out which header columns to use "cut -f" on. Is there a *nix-based viewer for a terminal session which will display rows and columns of a tab-delimited file and let you move the viewing window over the file, or otherwise look at data? I don't want to write this myself; instead, I'd just make a reformatter which would replace tabs with spaces for padding so I could open the file up in emacs and see aligned columns. But if there's already a tool out there to do something like this, that'd be great! (Or, I could just live with Excel.)

  Iam using xmonad on ubuntu 13.04, in ~/.xmonad my computer has the file xmonad.hs, if I try to read it from terminal using nano it opens a new file, I can access the file opening it from geany or gedit, but if I try to recompile it, the system does not find that file, so I cannot configure xmonad, every thing I try on this file from console does not work, because terminal even if I am root cannot see it, can you help me solve this issue?

However, I used the Home Folder application to see where those drives/folders were. And after I clicked into it in the Home Folder, I looked again at the same folder in the terminal and it appeared.
