  • Setup GIT Server with Msysgit on Windows

    - by Tom
Hi Guys, My friends and I are trying to setup GIT for windows using this tutorial but we just keep running into problems. I know many of you guys on this site are GIT gurus - so I was wondering whether anyone would be able to help us (and I am sure 100s of other Windows Devs who want to use GIT) write a "Setup GIT Server" guide for windows using Msysgit ? There is a comment on the guide above suggesting it cant be done with Msysgit because gitosis requires the use of an SSH Server and Bash ? Would really appreciate it if someone could do a step by step guide as there is not one available (we've search for hours)? Install Mysisgit ? Thx

  • "type" Command Not Working As Expected on Git Bash

    - by trysis
The type command, in Linux, returns the location, on the filesystem, of the given file, if it is in the current folder or the $PATH. This functionality is also available through Windows with the Git Bash command line program. The command also returns a file's location given the file without its extension (.exe, .vbs, etc.) However, I have run into what seems like a strange corner case where the file exists on the $PATH but doesn't get returned using the command. I am thinking of buying a new computer soon, so I looked up the method of transferring the license key from one computer to another, in preparation for actually doing this. The method I found mentioned the files slmgr.vbs and slui.exe, both of which reside in the C:/Windows\System32 folder, which is in my $PATH, as usual for a Windows computer. However, these two files aren't showing up when I use the type command. Also, neither gets executed when I call the files as commands without their extensions in Git Bash, and only slmgr.vbs gets executed when I call them with the extensions. Finally, slmgr.vbs is shown when listing the folder's contents in Git Bash, as well, but slui.exe isn't. I thought this might have to do with permissions, and, indeed, both files have very restrictive permissions, as you can see in the pictures below, but they both have the same permissions, which wouldn't explain why one gets executed and the other doesn't when called directly, nor why one file is listed on command line but the other isn't. C:\Windows\System32 folder, proving the files exist: File permissions for the Users and Administrators groups for the two files (they are identical): And the folder: type command and its output in Git Bash for the 2 files, plus listing the files in the folder (using grep to filter as the folder is huge), as well as listing part of the $PATH (keep in mind, for all these, that Git Bash changes the paths as they are displayed): Sean@MYPC ~ $ type -a slmgr sh.exe": type: slmgr: not found Sean@MYPC ~ $ type -a slmgr.vbs sh.exe": type: slmgr.vbs: not found Sean@MYPC ~ $ type -a slui sh.exe": type: slui: not found Sean@MYPC ~ $ type -a slui.exe sh.exe": type: slui.exe: not found Sean@MYPC ~ $ slmgr sh.exe": slmgr: command not found Sean@MYPC ~ $ slmgr.vbs /c/WINDOWS/system32/slmgr.vbs: line 2: syntax error near unexpected token `(' /c/WINDOWS/system32/slmgr.vbs: line 2: `' Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. • git checkout master/branching question

    - by danwoods
Hello all, I 'm relatively new to git and and having some problems early on. I've made several commits, but when I try to push them I get a response that says everything is up-to-date. I feel like my problem is the same on listed in this question, but it recommends the following: $ git log -1 # note the SHA-1 of latest commit $ git checkout master # reset your branch head to your previously detached commit $ git reset --hard <commit-id> What exactly will "checking out the master" do? I just don't want to lose the changes I've made... screenshot of gitk:

  • Multiple Git repositories in one directory

    - by Jakob
Hello, I would like to deploy a directory to multiple developers having different permissions. So this is one thing Git cannot do. What about creating two repositories in one directory and assigning them different file lists by excluding files managed by the other repository with the .gitignore file. Example: /www/project/.git for all files execpt in /www/project/css /www/project/css/.git - only files in this directory Has anyone tried this solution? Or are there any better ways to handle this issue? Regards, Jakob

  • Git - ssh key / ip address

    - by Steve
When I set up Git, I did it while using a dsl modem, and my ip isn't static, so when I generated the ssh keys for Git, it was based on that ip. When I'm assigned an ip other than the one used to generate the ssh Git keys, I can manually change the ip address to the one used to generate the keys. What are my other options to bypass this step? Dynamic DNS? Is there another way?

  • using git on android

    - by Dave
Hi all, I have a desktop application using git for synchronization. I have also an android application which do the same as the desktop, but I don't know how to do the synchronization part on it. I haven't found any implementation of git on android. I found a jgit, but its unwell documented and I was not able to do even a commit with that. I was thinking about remote commands to my git server from my android app, but this is really a tease for me. Could you tell me if any other git implementation which can be used on android exists? If you have any idea how to solve that, please tell me. Thanks for reply, Dave

  • Git merge of same and externally modified file

    - by neduma
I have inherited some code (from zip file) from a developer and git initialzed, made changes and set of check-ins progressively. Now, the same developer released the same code with his changes and gave me the another zip file. How do i merge my changes which i have it my git repo and his recent changes from the second zip file contents? Ideally, i would like to have the code which should be accumalation of both my changes and the developer recent changes. I tried to create branch b1 from my master branch and applied second zip file contents on top of that. committed those files in the branch and did 'git checkout master; git merge b1' - but, i do not get my changes, only his changes in my master branch.

  • Extract part of a git repository?

    - by Riobard
Assume my git repository has the following structure: /.git /Project /Project/SubProject-0 /Project/SubProject-1 /Project/SubProject-2 and the repository has quite some commits. Now one of the subprojects (SubProject-0) grows pretty big, and I want to take SubProject-0 out and set it up as a standalone project. Is it possible to extract all the commit history involving SubProject-0 from the parent git repository and move it to a new one?

  • Why not use Git?

    - by Tom R
A lot of people like git (in particular this guy) against other SCMs such as SVN, but many projects, even new ones, are set up using alternative SCMs. Furthermore, Google Code still does not support it (although many of their large open source projects use it). My question is: what are the reasons for not using git in any project, whether it be personal or collaborative? Maybe I've just been brainwashed by this guy, but I can't see any area in which other SCMs excel over git.

  • Making vim git aware.

    - by anon
I use Vim & Git together. I tend to merge/switch Git branches alot. I tend to have lots of vim buffers open. Is there a way to tell vim: when I execute this git command (which switches branches), reload all buffers? Since I have hooks into all my vim-git interaction, letting vim know when to do the reload is not a problem. The question is: how to force vim to reload all buffers?

  • Kubunutu/Windows 7 dual-boot and git

    - by Andu
I've been using Kubuntu and Windows 7 on my laptop for some time. Recently I also started using git to keep track of a project I'm working on. At first I thought I'd use the same git repo for editing from both Kubuntu and Win, but I soon discovered that committing changes on Win would make git on Kubuntu think all the files have changed since the last commit, although the change doesn't seem to be content related. The exactly same thing happens if I do a commit on Kubuntu and right after that do a git status on Win. I know I could use different repos for Kubuntu and Win and just merge them together when I'm done, but if anyone knows how I could use the same repo I would really appreciate the help.

  • Installing a rails plugin from a Git repository

    - by Daniel Beardsley
I've been trying to install Shoulda script/plugin install git://github.com/thoughtbot/shoulda.git but all I get is: removing: C:/Documents and Settings/Danny/My Documents/Projects/Ruby On Rails/_ProjectName_/vendor/plugins/shoulda/.git > And the vender/plugins directory is empty. I have Rails 2.1.1 installed as a gem and have verified that 2.1.1 is loaded (using a puts inserted into config/boot.rb). Any ideas about what's going on? (this is on a windows box)

  • git doesn't show where code was removed.

    - by Andrew Myers
So I was tasked at replacing some dummy code that our project requires for historical compatibility reasons but has mysteriously dropped out sometime since the last release. Since disappearing code makes me nervous about what else might have gone missing but un-noticed I've been digging through the logs trying to find in what commit this handful of lines was removed. I've tried a number of things including "git log -S'add-visit-resource-pcf'", git blame, and even git bisect with a script that simply checks for the existence of the line but have been unable to pinpoint exactly where these lines were removed. I find this very perplexing, particularly since the last log entry (obtained by the above command) before my re-introduction of this code was someone else adding the code as well. commit 0b0556fa87ff80d0ffcc2b451cca1581289bbc3c Author: Andrew Date: Thu May 13 10:55:32 2010 -0400 Re-introduced add-visit-resource-pcf, see PR-65034. diff --git a/spike/hst/scheduler/defpackage.lisp b/spike/hst/scheduler/defpackage.lisp index f8e692d..a6f8d38 100644 --- a/spike/hst/scheduler/defpackage.lisp +++ b/spike/hst/scheduler/defpackage.lisp @@ -115,6 +115,7 @@ #:add-to-current-resource-pcf #:add-user-package-nickname #:add-value-criteria + #:add-visit-resource-pcf #:add-window-to-gs-params #:adjust-derived-resources #:adjust-links-candidate-criteria-types commit 9fb10e25572c537076284a248be1fbf757c1a6e1 Author: Bob Date: Sun Jan 17 18:35:16 2010 -0500 update-defpackage for Spike 33.1 Delivery diff --git a/spike/hst/scheduler/defpackage.lisp b/spike/hst/scheduler/defpackage.lisp index 983666d..47f1a9a 100644 --- a/spike/hst/scheduler/defpackage.lisp +++ b/spike/hst/scheduler/defpackage.lisp @@ -118,6 +118,7 @@ #:add-user-package-nickname #:add-value-criteria #:add-vars-from-proposal + #:add-visit-resource-pcf #:add-window-to-gs-params #:adjust-derived-resources #:adjust-links-candidate-criteria-types This is for one of our package definition files, but the relevant source file reflects something similar. • git gui app to show detected renames

    - by karolrvn
Hi. Is there a git gui app (for commiting) that shows detected renames? Git-gui currently shows me a lot of deleted and new files instead of renames. TortoiseGit does not work at all on my system. Intellij's Git somehow does not detect any modifications to commit. TIA.

  • "Hiding" things in GIT

    - by bobobobo
Git noob here. I know this is against the principal of "distributed source control" but I want to "password protect" certain development branches in my GIT repository. That is, I don't want that branch to be available via git branch -r, except to a certain group of developers who need access to that branch, via some sort of password. Possible?

  • What are .git/info/grafts for?

    - by Big 40wt Svetlyak
I am trying to figure out what is the 'grafts' in the Git. For example, in one of the latest comments here, Tobu suppose to use git-filter-branch and .git/info/grafts to join two repositories. But I don't understand why I need these grafts? It seems, that all work without last two commands.

  • Git remote has master but no HEAD

    - by dwynne
I'm new to Git, so I suspect that I'm misunderstanding something here, but I'll ask anyway. Via TortoiseGit I do the following: Init a new Git repo locally Add a readme file to it and commit Add a new remote Push the new repo to the orgin (remote) If I then Browse Refs I see the following: heads/master remotes/origin/master What I find odd is that I don't see a HEAD on the remotes. If I delete my local repo and then clone it from the server (I just pushed to above) and then browse the refs I see: heads/master remotes/origin/HEAD remotes/origin/master So why don't I see a remote head after the initial push? NB. I've done the same via Git Bash command (ie. not Tortoise Git) and am seeing the same thing.
