  • NSString variable out of scope in sub-class (iPhone/Obj-C)

    I am following along with an example in a book with the code exactly as it is in the example code as well as from the book, and I'm getting an error at runtime. I'll try to describe the life cycle of this variable as good as I can. I have a controller class with a nested array that is populated with string literals (NSArray of NSArrays, the nested NSArrays initialized with arrayWithObjects: where the objects are all string literals - @"some string"). I access these strings with a helper method added via a category on NSArray (to pull strings out of a nested array). My controller gets a reference to this string and assigns it to a NSString property on a child controller using dot notation. The code looks like this (nestedObjectAtIndexPath is my helper method): NSString *rowKey = [rowKeys nestedObjectAtIndexPath:indexPath]; controller.keypath = rowKey; keypath is a synthesized nonatomic, retain property defined in a based class. When I hit a breakpoint in the controller at the above code, the NSString's value is as expected. When I hit the next breakpoint inside the child controller, the object id of the keypath property is the same as before, but instead of showing me the value of the NSString, XCode says that the variable is "out of scope" which is also the error I see in the console. This also happens in another sub-class of the same parent. I tried googling, and I saw slightly similar cases where people were suggesting this had to do with retain counts. I was under the impression that by using dot notation on a synthesized property, my class would be using an "auto generated accessor" that would be increasing my retain count for me so that I wouldn't have this problem. Could there be any implications because I'm accessing it in a sub-class and the prop is defined in the parent? I don't see anything in the book's errata about this, but the book is relatively new (Apress - More iPhone 3 Dev). I also have double checked that my code matches the example 100 times.

  • Rewind request body stream

    I am re-implementing a request logger as Owin Middleware which logs the request url and body of all incoming requests. I am able to read the body, but if I do the body parameter in my controller is null. I'm guessing it's null because the stream position is at the end so there is nothing left to read when it tries to deserialize the body. I had a similar issue in a previous version of Web API but was able to set the Stream position back to 0. This particular stream throws a This stream does not support seek operations exception. In the most recent version of Web API 2.0 I could call Request.HttpContent.ReadAsStringAsync()inside my request logger, and the body would still arrive to the controller in tact.     I want to loop through a collection of objects and add them all to a table. The destination table has an auto-increment field. If I add a single object there is no problem. If I add two objects both with the primary key of zero, the entity framework fails. I can manually specify primary keys but the whole point of trying the EF was to make life easier not more complicated.   • Ruby XMLRPC::CLIENT issue under Rails 2.3.5 with Ruby 1.8.6

    I'm trying to implement a ping to an xmlrpc server written in PHP under CodeIgniter. The system currently works as expected when receiving pings from WordPress-based blogs, but I'm unable to generate a successful ping from Rails.   • Jquery.get() not returning any data

    Hi I am trying to scrape other people web pages (for the forces of good not evil). I am currently trying to do this with javascript/jquery from with in a browser. I am finding that the no data is returned from the jquery.get() success call back function. My code. $.get('http://www.google.co.uk/', function (data, textStatus, XMLHttpRequest){ alert("status " + textStatus); alert('data:' + data); window.data=data; window.textStatus=textStatus; window.httpReq = XMLHttpRequest}); In my mind this should simply do a get on google store the data in window.data and we are all good. What happens is we get textStatus == success and data == "". the status on the XMLHttpRequest is 4(success). I have looked at the network traffic using a transparent proxy (Charles) and everything looks find there http status 200 plenty of data being returned. I am running this just from the Firebug console in Firefox. Any ideas?

I replaced $DataSet.Tables[0] with for ($i=0;$i -lt $DataSet.tables.count;$i++){ $Dataset.Tables[$i] } but the console only shows the content of the first table and blank lines for each records of what should be the second table. The only way to see the result is to change the code to $Dataset.Tables[$i] | out-string but I do not want strings, I want to have table objects to work with. When I assign what is returned by the Invoke-SQLCommand to a variable, I can see that I have an array of datarow objects but only from the first table. What happened to the second table?   • shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation called several times in a row without any rotation

    I am trying to implement some interface changes in my app, based on the device rotation. My app is a view based app. So, its main view controller has a didload method. The app starts in portrait. Almost all changes on the device orientation triggers the shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation method but this method is not called when the device is put on portrait, after coming from any landscape orientation. While debugging the app, I have put a NSLog(@"orientation=%d", interfaceOrientation); on my shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation method, and what I see is quite strange: When I run the app, shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation is called 6 times before the app's interface even appears. Every time it runs, it reports a different number for the orientation: the order it reports on console is: portrait, portrait, portrait, landscape right, landscape left, upside down) (????). During this time the app is just beginning. All 6 times the debugger reports the method being run by the app's delegate. So, here comes the questions: WHy shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation is not being called when the device enters on portrait? Why is this method running 6 times called by the delegate even before the app starts and shows its interface if no rotation is being done? thanks.

    I've found what I think may be a bug with Ivar and Objective-C runtime. I'm using XCode 3.2.1 and associated libraries, developing a 64 bit app on X86_64 (MacBook Pro). Where I would expect the type encoding for the following "longVal" to be 'l', the Ivar encoding is showing a 'q' (which is a 'long long'). Anyone else seeing this?   • Ruby JSON.pretty_generate ... is pretty unpretty

    I can't seem to get JSON.pretty_generate() to actually generate pretty output in Rails. I'm using Rails 2.3.5 and it seems to automatically load the JSON gem. Awesome. While using script/console this does indeed produce JSON: some_data = {'foo' => 1, 'bar' => 20, 'cow' => [1, 2, 3, 4], 'moo' => {'dog' => 'woof', 'cat' => 'meow'}} some_data.to_json => "{\"cow\":[1,2,3,4],\"moo\":{\"cat\":\"meow\",\"dog\":\"woof\"},\"foo\":1,\"bar\":20}" But this doesn't produce pretty output: JSON.pretty_generate(some_data) => "{\"cow\":[1,2,3,4],\"moo\":{\"cat\":\"meow\",\"dog\":\"woof\"},\"foo\":1,\"bar\":20}" The only way I've found to generate it is to use irb and to load the Pure version: require 'rubygems' require 'json/pure' some_data = {'foo' => 1, 'bar' => 20, 'cow' => [1, 2, 3, 4], 'moo' => {'dog' => 'woof', 'cat' => 'meow'}} JSON.pretty_generate(some_data) => "{\n \"cow\": [\n 1,\n 2,\n 3,\n 4\n ],\n \"moo\": {\n \"cat\": \"meow\",\n \"dog\": \"woof\"\n },\n \"foo\": 1,\n \"bar\": 20\n}" BUT, what I really want is Rails to produce this.     Hi, when do reliable sessions time out? My session class is defined as follows: [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerSession, ConcurrencyMode = ConcurrencyMode.Multiple)] and in my app.config... <bindings> <netTcpBinding> <binding name="FTS_netTcpBinding"> <reliableSession enabled="true" inactivityTimeout="00:00:30"/> </binding> </netTcpBinding> </bindings> I have put a timer in the constructor of my session class that simply outputs a count (1..2..3...) to the console for every second the session is active. I have tested it so far by faulting my channel. I would have imagined that the session class would have died after ~30 seconds (as specified in my inactivityTimeout parameter) and hence the timer would have died. However it was still going after a minute. Each session on my app will have significant resources so I need to make sure that they are cleaned up when something goes wrong. Thanks.

    I checked the rest of the remoting questions, and this specific case did not seem to be addressed. I have a .NET Remoting server/client set up. On the server side I have an object with a method that can throw an exception, and a client which will try to call that method. This happens server side. The exception is never marshaled over to the client-side, and I cannot figure out why. All of the questions I have looked at address the issue of an exception being handled client-side, but it isn't the custom exception but a base type. In my case, I can't even get any exception to cross the remoting boundary to the client. Here is a copy of AuthenticationException. It is in the shared library between both server and client.     Hi, I am new to jasper report, I need to create pdf document with BeanDatasource and subreport. While i am running the report using IReport i can get the pdf document with the content.     Hello everybody, I am creating an app for the iPhone that fetches a specific page from a website, but to be able to view this site you need to log in with a username and a password.   • "Does not make sense to draw an image" - Warning after upgrade to MountainLion

    After I upgraded my programming machine to MountainLion and XCode to the new version I get this warning printed into the console everytime I run my application: It does not make sense to draw an image when [NSGraphicsContext currentContext] is nil. This is a programming error. Break on void _NSWarnForDrawingImageWithNoCurrentContext() to debug. This will be logged only once. This may break in the future. I'm not using an Image anywhere in my Application and I searched the whole project for an image but couldn't find one. Does anybody know what could cause this? I'm using 2 nib files btw: One Popover and the Mainwindow. Neither of them contains an image. Edit: I found the line when this appears: [self.popover showRelativeToRect:[appDelegate.menulet frame] ofView:appDelegate.menulet preferredEdge:NSMinYEdge]; But none of those object is nil. Any suggestions? Edit 2: The Menulet is a NSView subclass btw. So I'm passing a view.

    Hi all, I'm trying to send some data via dojo.xhrPost to an Zend Controller Action. I can see the data being sent in Firebug console. However, when inspecting the post data, the array is empty. I'm not sure if it is possible to send an arbitrary string of data via dojo.xhrPost without using a form. This is probably a very n00b mistake. When looking at the dojo.xhrPost examples on the dojo campus web site (http://docs.dojocampus.org/dojo/xhrPost second one to be precise), it looks as if I can just send a string of data. How do I access this data from a Zend Controller Action? I'm using ZF 1.10 and Dojo 1.4.2 Thanks for your help! PS I'd try to ask on one of the related questions, but I cannot seem to comment.

  • Getting types of the attributes in an ActiveRecord object

    I would like to know if it is possible to get the types (as known by AR - eg in the migration script and database) programmatically (I know the data exists in there somewhere). For example, I can deal with all the attribute names: ar.attribute_names.each { |name| puts name } .attributes just returns a mapping of the names to their current values (eg no type info if the field isn't set). Some places I have seen it with the type information: in script/console, type the name of an AR entity: >> Driver => Driver(id: integer, name: string, created_at: datetime, updated_at: datetime) So clearly it knows the types. Also, there is .column_for_attribute, which takes an attr name and returns a column object - which has the type buried in the underlying database column object, but it doesn't appear to be a clean way to get it. I would also be interested in if there is a way that is friendly for the new "ActiveModel" that is coming (rails3) and is decoupled from database specifics (but perhaps type info will not be part of it, I can't seem to find out if it is).   • UIAlertView -show causing a memory leak

    I'm relatively new to iPhone Development, so this may be my fault, but it goes against what I've seen. :) I think that I'm creating a UIAlertView that lives just in this vaccuum of the 'if' statement. NSData *data = [NSURLConnection sendSynchronousRequest:request returningResponse:&response error:&error]; if(!data) { // Add an alert UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:@"Error" message:@"Unable to contact server" delegate:nil cancelButtonTitle:@"Ok" otherButtonTitles:nil]; NSLog(@"retain count before show: %i", alert.retainCount); [alert show]; NSLog(@"retain count before release: %i", alert.retainCount); [alert release]; NSLog(@"retain count after release: %i", alert.retainCount); return nil; } However, the console logs baffle me. retain count before show: 1 retain count before release: 6 retain count after release: 5 I've tried also adding: alert = nil; after the release. That makes the retain count 0, but I still show a leak. And if it helps, the leak's Responsible Frame is UIKeyboardInputManagerClassForInputMode. I'm also using OS 4 Beta 3. So anyone have any ideas how a local UIAlertView's retain count would increment itself by 5 when calling -show? Thanks for your help!
